The Honda NSX is a mid-engine sports car because its engine sits behind the passenger cabin and ahead of the rear axle, in the vehicle’s middle section. In the first generation, that position was combined with a transversely mounted, naturally aspirated V6 and rear-wheel drive. The second generation kept the engine in the same midship location but changed to a twin-turbo V6 and Honda’s three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system.
Where is the NSX’s engine?
“Mid-engine” identifies the engine’s location. In an NSX, the engine is not in front of the cabin, as it is in a conventional front-engine sports car, and it is not behind the rear axle, as in a rear-engine layout. It occupies the space immediately behind the occupants and in front of the rear axle.
Honda’s technical description of the original car places the engine behind the cabin, close to the vehicle’s center of gravity. Honda’s description of the later car similarly locates its V6 between the cabin and rear axle. That physical position is the defining fact; the engine’s design, its mounting direction and the wheels it drives are separate matters.

Automotive descriptions often place several terms next to one another, which can make them sound interchangeable. They are not. A useful way to decode the NSX specification is to ask three different questions.

1. Where is the engine?
The answer is midship: behind the passenger compartment and ahead of the rear axle. This is the answer to the title’s question and the reason both NSX generations qualify as mid-engine cars.
2. Which way is the engine mounted?
The first-generation NSX used a transverse engine. “Transverse” describes orientation, not location: the V6 was installed across the car rather than along its length. Honda says this arrangement reduced the engine’s longitudinal dimension, helping the compact sports-car package.
3. Which wheels receive power?
The original NSX used rear-wheel drive. The second-generation car used Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, a hybrid all-wheel-drive system. Therefore, “mid-engine” cannot be used as shorthand for rear-wheel drive across the NSX family.
| Term | Question it answers | NSX example |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-engine or midship | Where is the engine located? | Behind the cabin and ahead of the rear axle |
| Transverse | How is the engine oriented? | First-generation V6 mounted across the car |
| Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive | Which wheels are driven? | Rear-wheel drive in the first generation; hybrid SH-AWD in the second |
Why Honda pursued a midship layout
Honda’s history of the original NSX says the development team was examining a change from a front-engine, front-wheel-drive format to an underfloor midship-engine, rear-wheel-drive format. The stated reasons were greater flexibility in frame design, more efficient packaging and the ability to retain sporting characteristics associated with rear-wheel drive.
Honda’s C30A engine account gives a more specific engineering objective: placing the engine behind the cabin and near the center of gravity supported the company’s goal of balancing weight between the front and rear and achieving handling performance. That is Honda’s design rationale for this car. It should not be converted into the blanket claim that every mid-engine vehicle automatically handles better; suspension design, tires, structure, power delivery and many other choices also matter.

Moving the power unit out of the nose also changes how the available volume is used. In the NSX’s case, the transverse installation shortened the engine’s front-to-back dimension. Honda presented that compactness as part of the packaging solution rather than as a definition of mid-engine design.
First-generation NSX: transverse V6 and rear-wheel drive
Engine and placement
Honda developed a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter C30A V6 for the NSX introduced in September 1990. The engine sat behind the cabin, close to the center of gravity, in a transverse midship installation. The transmission was arranged beside the engine, an arrangement Honda described in its C30A technical material.

None of those labels replaces another.
What the layout was intended to accomplish
Honda’s development account connects the underfloor midship format to frame-design freedom and packaging efficiency. The C30A account connects the engine’s location to the intended front-to-rear weight balance and handling objective. These statements explain the engineering priorities behind the layout; they are not independent performance measurements.
Reading an original-NSX specification correctly
- Generation: first-generation NSX.
- Engine: naturally aspirated 3.0-liter C30A V6.
- Position: transverse midship, behind the cabin.
- Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive.
The 3.0-liter specification belongs to this original generation. It should not be applied to every NSX, because the later generation uses a different engine and powertrain.

Second-generation NSX: the mid-engine layout with hybrid all-wheel drive
Engine and location
The second-generation NSX retained the defining mid-engine arrangement. Honda describes a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 positioned between the cabin and the rear axle. The location therefore remained consistent with the original car even though the engine and supporting systems changed substantially.
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD
Instead of the first generation’s rear-wheel-drive arrangement, the later NSX adopted Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. Honda describes this as a three-motor hybrid system adapted to the midship layout. The result is a mid-engine sports car with hybrid all-wheel drive, not a rear-wheel-drive car merely because its engine is behind the cabin.
Reading a second-generation specification correctly
- Generation: second-generation NSX.
- Engine: 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6.
- Position: between the cabin and rear axle.
- Drivetrain: Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, a hybrid all-wheel-drive system.
Honda’s 2015 announcement described the development goal as creating a new sports-car experience by using new technology to deliver vivid performance and an immediate response to the driver’s inputs. That statement describes the intended character of the second generation; it is not a definition of the mid-engine layout.
How the two generations compare
| Characteristic | First-generation NSX | Second-generation NSX |
|---|---|---|
| Engine position | Midship, behind the cabin and near the center of gravity | Mid-engine, between the cabin and rear axle |
| Engine orientation | Transverse | Not stated in the cited Honda descriptions |
| Engine type | Naturally aspirated 3.0-liter C30A V6 | 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 |
| Driven wheels | Rear-wheel drive | Hybrid Sport Hybrid SH-AWD all-wheel drive |
| Packaging detail identified by Honda | Transmission beside the transversely mounted engine; shorter longitudinal engine dimension | Three-motor hybrid system adapted to the midship arrangement |
The table shows the important continuity: both cars put the main engine behind the occupants and ahead of the rear axle. It also shows why a generation-specific description is necessary when discussing induction, orientation or driven wheels.
Why the engine’s position matters to the car’s design
Weight placement
Honda located the original V6 near the center of gravity to pursue a more balanced distribution of mass between the front and rear. In practical design terms, this places a large, heavy component nearer the middle instead of concentrating it far ahead of the front axle or behind the rear axle. Honda identified that placement as part of its handling objective.

Packaging
The NSX demonstrates that “mid-engine” does not require a particular engine orientation. Its first-generation V6 was transverse, and the transmission sat beside it. Honda said the transverse installation reduced longitudinal engine length, which helped the engineers package the power unit in the space behind the cabin.
Drivetrain architecture
The same basic engine location can support different power-delivery systems. The original car sent power to the rear wheels, while the later car combined its mid-engine V6 with electric motors and SH-AWD. The change in driven wheels did not remove the mid-engine classification because the classification is based on where the engine is mounted.

“Mid-engine” means the engine is in the exact center of the cabin
No. The occupants remain in the passenger compartment; the engine is behind that compartment and before the rear axle. “Middle” refers to the vehicle’s longitudinal layout, not to an engine physically occupying the cabin.
A transverse engine cannot be mid-engine
It can. Transverse describes the direction in which the engine is mounted. The first-generation NSX is the direct example: Honda documented both its transverse orientation and its midship position.
Every mid-engine NSX is rear-wheel drive
That is true only of the first generation described here. The second generation retained the engine position but used hybrid all-wheel drive through Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.

The 3.0-liter C30A describes all NSX models
No. Honda’s C30A material concerns the original generation introduced in 1990. The later NSX uses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, so the two engine specifications must not be merged.
Honda’s handling rationale proves every mid-engine car handles better
No. Honda’s documents explain what its engineers were trying to achieve with the NSX: weight balance, frame-design flexibility, packaging efficiency and sporting characteristics. They do not establish a universal rule that location alone determines handling.
A quick way to identify an NSX as mid-engine
- Locate the passenger cabin. Use the seats and windshield area as the cabin’s reference point.
- Find the main engine. In both NSX generations, it is behind the cabin rather than ahead of it.
- Check the axle relationship. The engine is ahead of the rear axle, not behind it.
- Separate the remaining labels. Determine whether the particular car has a transverse or another documented orientation, then identify whether its drivetrain is rear-wheel drive or SH-AWD all-wheel drive.
If the first two location checks are satisfied, the car meets the positional definition of mid-engine. The later checks explain which version of the NSX you are looking at rather than whether it belongs to the mid-engine category.

The Honda NSX is mid-engine because its engine is mounted behind the passenger cabin and ahead of the rear axle, close to the vehicle’s central region. Honda used that placement in the original NSX with a transverse, naturally aspirated V6 and rear-wheel drive, then retained it in the second generation with a twin-turbo V6 and hybrid Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. Position, orientation and drivetrain are three distinct specifications, and understanding that distinction is the key to describing the NSX accurately.
