The Australian dollar (AUD) rises against the US dollar (USD) when markets judge that holding Australian assets offers better risk-adjusted prospects, Australia’s export prices and income outlook improve, the US dollar weakens, or several of those forces occur together. It falls when the relative attraction of Australian assets declines, the terms of trade deteriorate, the US dollar strengthens, or investors move away from risk.
The exchange rate is a relative price rather than a scorecard for Australia alone. Interest-rate expectations, commodity-linked export earnings, trade and capital flows, US economic conditions, and global risk sentiment interact. Their influence changes over time, so none provides a mechanical forecast for the next trading session.
How to read AUD/USD
AUD/USD quotes the number of US dollars one Australian dollar buys. If the quote moves from 0.64 to 0.66, one AUD purchases more US dollars and the Australian dollar has appreciated against the US dollar. A move from 0.66 to 0.64 means the AUD has depreciated. The same event can therefore be described as either an AUD move or a USD move: AUD/USD may rise because the AUD strengthens, because the USD weakens, or because both happen at once.

The main forces behind the exchange rate
Relative interest rates and expected returns
Investors compare the return they expect from Australian assets with the return available in the United States and other major economies. Australian government bonds, bank deposits and other interest-bearing assets can become more attractive when Australian interest rates are expected to rise relative to US rates, all else equal. Demand for those assets can increase demand for AUD and put upward pressure on AUD/USD. A relative decline in Australian yields can work in the opposite direction.
Markets trade expectations, not just today’s policy setting. If a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) increase was widely anticipated, the exchange rate may have adjusted before the announcement and show little reaction afterward. A decision that changes the expected path of future rates can matter more than a move that merely confirms what investors already priced in. US Federal Reserve decisions matter through the same channel: a higher expected US path can support the USD and lower AUD/USD even without a change in Australian policy.
The relevant comparison is therefore Australian returns versus US returns after allowing for inflation expectations, currency risk and the possibility of economic stress. The RBA describes the interest-rate differential as a key driver of demand for Australian dollars and investment capital flows, while cautioning that its effect varies with other conditions.
Export prices, commodities and the terms of trade
Australia sells large quantities of commodities and agricultural products, including iron ore, natural gas and farm goods. The terms of trade measure the prices Australia receives for exports relative to the prices it pays for imports. When export prices rise faster than import prices, the terms of trade improve. Exporters then receive more foreign currency for each shipment, overseas buyers may need more AUD to pay Australian suppliers, and profitable projects can attract investment into Australia. Those channels can support the currency.

A deterioration in export prices or in the terms of trade can reduce export income and weaken that support. The effect is not a fixed commodity-to-currency formula. The size of Australia’s production response, China and other customers’ demand, interest-rate expectations, and investor risk appetite can reinforce or offset the trade impulse.
The RBA’s historical mining-boom example illustrates the mechanism without proving a rule. Commodity prices rose sharply from the mid-2000s through 2013, and the Australian dollar reached about US$1.10 in 2011. That was a peak in a particular historical episode, not a current quotation or a level that commodities alone can reproduce.
The US-dollar side of the pair
Because AUD/USD includes the dollar in the denominator, US developments can dominate a move even when Australia’s outlook is unchanged. Stronger US data, expectations of higher Federal Reserve rates, or demand for the liquidity of US assets can lift the USD and push AUD/USD lower. Softer US data, lower expected US yields or broad dollar selling can lift the pair.
Check whether the US dollar moved against many currencies at the same time. A broad USD decline suggests that the day’s AUD/USD rise was partly a dollar story rather than a uniquely Australian event. The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System states in its foreign-exchange FAQ that neither the US Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a particular exchange-rate level. That means policy decisions are aimed at their broader mandates and financial conditions, not at maintaining a chosen AUD/USD number.

Risk appetite, growth and inflation expectations
The Australian dollar is often treated by markets as a currency that performs better when investors are willing to hold riskier or cyclical assets. During a broad risk-off episode, investors may prefer highly liquid US-dollar assets, increasing demand for USD and weighing on AUD/USD. A risk-on shift can have the reverse tendency.
This is a tendency, not a law. A risk-off day accompanied by a sharp fall in expected US rates could still produce a higher AUD/USD, while strong commodity prices or a surprise Australian policy signal could support the AUD during otherwise cautious markets. Investors also revise expected growth and inflation in Australia, the United States, China and the global economy. Those revisions alter both expected policy rates and the premium investors require for holding Australian-dollar assets.
Trade, investment flows and foreign-exchange operations
Trade creates routine currency demand and supply. An overseas customer buying Australian exports may obtain AUD to pay an Australian producer. An Australian importer buying goods or services from abroad generally sells AUD to obtain the foreign currency needed for payment. The balance and timing of these transactions influence the market, as do cross-border purchases of shares, bonds, property and business assets.
The RBA defines foreign-exchange intervention as direct purchases or sales of Australian dollars. A purchase creates demand for AUD; a sale creates supply. This concept does not imply routine intervention to hold AUD/USD at a selected level. Most day-to-day movements reflect private transactions and changing expectations, while any official operation must be assessed from the specific circumstances and policy communication.

A framework for explaining a particular AUD/USD move
When a news event or historical episode needs explanation, use all five checks rather than assigning the move to a single headline:
- Compare expected policy paths. Did markets revise the expected RBA rate path, the expected Federal Reserve path, or both? Focus on the change relative to the other country, not on an isolated rate announcement.
- Check yields and risk premia. Did Australian government-bond yields move relative to US yields, and did investors demand more or less compensation for holding Australian-dollar assets?
- Examine export prices and the terms of trade. Were iron ore, gas, agricultural or other major export prices moving, and did the change alter Australia’s expected export income relative to import costs?
- Measure the USD-wide move. Did the US dollar rise or fall against several major currencies? A broad USD move can explain much of AUD/USD without a new Australian-specific story.
- Ask what was already expected. Was the announcement anticipated, and had market pricing moved before the official release? Surprises usually matter more than information already reflected in prices.
This checklist describes possible channels, not a guaranteed attribution. The RBA notes that the relative importance of exchange-rate determinants changes over time and that historical models have had mixed success.

Statements such as an RBA rate rise always strengthens the AUD or a commodity-price fall always weakens it omit the comparison that defines the pair. The Federal Reserve may move in the same direction, US yields may change more, or investors may suddenly reduce risk. A rate decision can also be interpreted as evidence of weaker future growth, offsetting its immediate yield effect.

Import prices, production volumes, hedging, fiscal policy and the timing of investment flows affect how much of an export-price change reaches the currency market.

Short-term prices can move before official data because traders continuously update probabilities. Long-term relationships can also change as Australia’s export mix, financial links and policy regimes evolve. These features make exchange-rate forecasting difficult; identifying a plausible driver after a move is not the same as predicting the next move.
Historical perspective: the mining-boom high
During the mining-investment boom, commodity prices climbed sharply from the mid-2000s through 2013. In that setting, stronger export prices, large investment inflows and favorable relative growth helped the AUD reach approximately US$1.10 in 2011, according to the RBA’s historical explainer. The figure is useful for understanding how several forces can reinforce one another. It should not be treated as a present-day rate, a target, or evidence that commodity prices operate independently of interest rates, the USD and risk sentiment.

What this means for readers tracking the pair
- Start with the quote convention: a higher AUD/USD number means a stronger AUD relative to USD.
- Read Australian and US policy expectations together; a domestic rate change has no fixed currency result in isolation.
- Treat commodity prices as a route through export prices and the terms of trade, not as a standalone trigger.
- Check broad US-dollar performance before calling a move Australia-specific.
- Separate a general mechanism from an explanation of a particular day. A specific attribution requires dated evidence about the event, market pricing and surrounding conditions.
- Use the framework to organize information, not as a trading signal or a promise of a forecast.
Institutional explanations
The Reserve Bank of Australia’s educational material summarizes the central mechanism by stating that, because the interest-rate differential is a key driver of exchange rates, the RBA’s monetary-policy decisions play a key role in influencing the exchange rate. Its separate discussion of the exchange rate and the RBA’s foreign-exchange role emphasizes that identifiable determinants can have different impacts over time. The Federal Reserve’s FAQ supplies the US-side qualification that the US Treasury and Federal Reserve do not target a level for the exchange rate.
