Team PvP describes who is fighting; battle royale and extraction shooter describe how the match is structured. In a team-versus-team mode, the rules may award victory for kills, holding territory, or completing an objective. A battle royale normally asks a player or squad to survive until it is the last one standing. An extraction shooter adds a raid-and-escape loop in which getting out with loot can matter as much as winning a firefight.

These categories overlap. A battle royale can use squads, and an extraction game can put players against both rival teams and computer-controlled enemies. To tell them apart, examine the objective, the event that ends the match, what survives afterward, and what death costs.

Team PvP is an arrangement, not one specific game mode

“PvP” means player versus player. “Team PvP” means players are divided into opposing teams. The label does not establish the map size, number of rounds, scoring system, or even whether both sides have the same job.

A team match can be decided by a kill target, a score accumulated from control points, or an attacker’s successful objective. Some modes give both teams identical tasks; others make one side attack and the other defend. Matches may use respawns, limited lives, rounds, or a time limit. That flexibility is why team PvP is broader than either battle royale or extraction shooter.

Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 6 modes guide, published October 10, 2025, illustrates the range. Its Team Deathmatch, Conquest, and Rush modes are all team PvP, yet their winning conditions are different.

Team Deathmatch: elimination is the win condition

In Team Deathmatch, two teams compete to reach a kill target. Eliminating opponents directly advances the score, so the central decisions concern positioning, engagements, revives where allowed, and protecting teammates. There is no separate territory or escape objective in the description of this mode.

Conquest: control matters more than a simple body count

Conquest assigns two teams multiple control points to capture and hold. Kills can remove defenders and make a capture safer, but they do not automatically secure the match. The Battlefield guide notes that revives can prevent lives from being lost and that pure elimination is not enough to guarantee victory. A team that wins fights but abandons objectives can still lose on score.

Rush: asymmetric attack and defense

Rush gives the sides different jobs. Attackers advance to objectives and plant explosives; defenders stop the advance and defuse the charges. Because the tasks are asymmetric, “team PvP” does not imply that both teams follow the same route or pursue the same immediate goal.

Battlefield example Team task How victory is determined
Team Deathmatch Fight the opposing team Reach the kill target
Conquest Capture and hold multiple control points Win through objective score; eliminating opponents alone is insufficient
Rush Attackers plant explosives; defenders defuse and stop the advance Complete or prevent the objective sequence

The practical lesson is to ask, “What action actually ends this match?” A kill may be the answer in one team mode, a means to hold a position in another, and only a way to clear a path in a third.

What defines a battle royale

Epic’s Fortnite documentation describes battle royale around survival, exploration, scavenging, and a last-person-standing game. Its glossary also recognizes last-team-standing play. The defining pressure is therefore elimination through survival: the match continues while players or squads are removed until one player or team remains.

That definition does not make battle royale a solo-only format. Squads are fully compatible with the structure. A four-person squad can share the survival objective, and the final winner can be the last surviving squad rather than an individual.

How a battle-royale match usually unfolds

  1. Enter with limited starting resources. Players begin the match without the full equipment they want, so early decisions involve finding useful weapons or supplies.
  2. Explore and scavenge. Movement through the map is tied to gathering equipment and choosing when to engage rival players.
  3. Preserve the squad. A fight that produces eliminations but leaves your team exposed can be strategically worse than avoiding it.
  4. Outlast the remaining field. Victory belongs to the last surviving player or team under that mode’s rules.

Unlike a conventional objective match, a battle royale usually does not award victory for holding a location or reaching a kill quota. Eliminations reduce the number of competitors, but survival is the final test.

What an extraction shooter adds

An extraction shooter combines competitive firefights with a raid-and-escape loop. A typical run asks you to enter an area, pursue a mission or loot objective, reach an extraction point, and leave alive. Rival players may be present, and environmental enemies can create PvPvE encounters.

CORSAIR’s genre explainer describes the common pattern as looting, extracting, and building a persistent stash from successful runs. It also highlights the risk of losing carried equipment or collected loot after death. Because this is a hardware-vendor explanation rather than a formal industry standard, treat those features as common design patterns, not requirements that every extraction game must follow.

The extraction loop is about risk management

  1. Prepare a loadout. You decide what equipment and supplies to risk before entering the raid.
  2. Pursue objectives and loot. The valuable item, mission target, or information may require detours and noisy fights.
  3. Choose whether to stay. More time can produce better loot, but it also creates more opportunities to be ambushed or killed.
  4. Reach an extraction point. Possessing loot is not the same as banking it; the run normally has to end with a successful escape.
  5. Accept the result. Extracted items can feed a persistent stash or future progression, while death may remove some or all carried gear, depending on the game.

This creates a different emotional calculation from a battle royale. In a battle royale, a failed match generally ends that attempt. In an extraction game, failure can also damage the resources you planned to use in later raids.

Side-by-side comparison

Format Primary success condition Match structure and stakes Other combatants What may persist
Team PvP, broadly Beat the opposing team under the selected mode’s rules: kills, control, or objective completion May be symmetric or attacker-versus-defender; may use rounds, lives, or score limits Usually opposing player teams; some modes can add non-player threats Typically the match score or round result; persistence depends on the game
Battle royale Be the last player or team standing Survival, exploration, and scavenging; squads may participate Other players or squads competing to survive Usually the result and any game-wide progression, rather than the match’s carried loot
Extraction shooter Complete the raid goal and extract successfully PvPvE encounters are common; death can put carried gear and loot at risk Rival players plus, in many designs, environmental enemies Successful extraction can build a persistent stash; the exact loss rules vary by game
Battlefield REDSEC Gauntlet Complete each round’s mission and advance through squad competition Eight four-player squads; five-minute mission windows; tournament-style rounds Competing player squads Round advancement within the event; this example does not establish a genre-wide persistence rule

Why the labels overlap

The terms describe different layers of design, so they are not mutually exclusive. “Team PvP” answers who opposes whom. “Battle royale” answers the survival structure. “Extraction shooter” answers the raid, escape, and progression structure.

  • Team objective PvP: two organized teams may respawn repeatedly while competing for territory or an attack objective.
  • Extraction PvPvE: player squads fight each other while also dealing with non-player enemies and trying to leave with loot.
  • Hybrid modes: a game can combine a round timer, team objectives, persistent progression, or extraction without fitting a single pure label.

When a game advertises more than one label, read the rules for the specific mode. Genre names are useful shortcuts, not guarantees about team size, map scale, respawns, or inventory loss.

Match endings and stakes are the clearest diagnostic

To classify an unfamiliar mode, check four questions before relying on its marketing label.

  1. What is the formal objective? Is it a kill target, a control score, a planted device, a mission item, or simply survival?
  2. What ends the match or round? Does the clock expire, does one team reach a score, does an objective chain finish, or does only one player or squad remain?
  3. Can you return after death? Respawns and revives are common in many team modes. A battle royale may allow limited squad recovery, while an extraction raid may remove you from that run entirely.
  4. What do you risk and keep? Determine whether weapons, loot, currency, or progression persist after extraction, after a win, or not at all.

These questions also prevent a common mistake: treating every elimination as a victory condition. In Conquest, for example, eliminating an opponent can support a capture but does not replace the need to hold objectives.

Team size and player counts are game-specific

Neither “team PvP” nor “battle royale” fixes a universal number of players. A mode can use duos, trios, four-player squads, or much larger teams, and an extraction game can use small raids or larger operations.

Electronic Arts’ current Battlefield REDSEC FAQ provides two concrete examples, not industry rules. It describes the Battle Royale mode as a 100-player match. The same FAQ describes Gauntlet as eight four-player squads competing in round-based missions, with each round giving teams a five-minute window to complete its mission objectives. Those counts and timings belong to REDSEC and can change with the game’s current version.

How the experience differs for players

Team PvP rewards coordination around a shared task

Communication is usually about timing pushes, covering revives, rotating to objectives, and assigning roles. A player who draws opponents away from a control point can help more than a player who chases an isolated elimination. Because many team modes allow repeated engagements, learning the map and understanding the score can be as important as aim.

Battle royale rewards information and survival judgment

Squads must balance looting against exposure, decide when to take a fight, and preserve enough members to survive the final encounters. A high elimination count is useful only if the squad remains alive when the match reaches its end.

Extraction rewards disciplined risk control

Players must evaluate the value of additional loot against the chance of losing the entire loadout. Route planning, knowing extraction locations, recognizing PvE threats, and deciding when to leave are central skills. Winning a firefight but dying before extraction can still produce a losing raid.

In any team format, a headset with a microphone is optional equipment rather than a genre requirement. Clear callouts can help with coordination, but the defining differences come from objectives, match endings, and persistence—not from a particular peripheral.

Common misconceptions

“Team PvP means Team Deathmatch.”

Team Deathmatch is one example. Conquest and Rush show that territory control and asymmetric objectives also fit the term.

“Battle royale is always solo.”

Official Fortnite documentation recognizes last-team-standing play, so squads are part of the format.

“A larger player count defines the genre.”

Player counts are implementation choices. REDSEC’s 100-player battle royale and eight four-player Gauntlet squads are useful examples, not definitions.

“PvP excludes computer-controlled enemies.”

PvP only identifies player-versus-player conflict. An extraction mode can add environmental enemies, creating PvPvE without ceasing to be PvP.

A quick way to identify any new mode

Read the mode description and mark the first statement that determines victory. If it says “reach a kill target,” you are looking at elimination-focused team PvP. If it says “capture and hold,” the score comes from control. If it says “last player or team standing,” it follows the battle-royale structure. If it says “complete the raid and extract with what you found,” it follows the extraction structure.

Then check the consequences of failure. Respawning into the same round points toward conventional team PvP; being removed while the rest of the field continues points toward a survival format; losing carried equipment and rebuilding a stash points toward extraction. This method works even when a game uses a hybrid label.

The bottom line

Team PvP is the broadest term: it says that opposing players are organized into teams. Battle royale narrows the focus to survival until one player or team remains. Extraction shooters add an objective-and-escape loop in which the value of a run depends on getting out and, often, preserving what you carried. To understand a mode precisely, ignore the label for a moment and inspect its win condition, match ending, team roles, PvE presence, respawn rules, and persistence system.
