stillOS is designed to make Linux setup feel guided rather than front-loaded: its developer describes a first-boot app picker, preset desktop layouts and a curated software center. Those choices may make it approachable for people new to Linux, but available sources do not establish that it objectively ranks among the best distributions for onboarding.
What happens when you first start stillOS?
stillOS’s Quick Setup flow lets users choose applications during first boot instead of receiving an installation image preloaded with a large assortment of apps. The developer introduced this approach in its stillOS 10.1 announcement. It can help newcomers avoid sorting through software they do not need, while still giving them a guided place to begin.
The setup flow is part of a broader collection of onboarding and desktop tools. stillHQ describes stillOS as based on AlmaLinux 10 and bootc, with automatic operating-system and app updates. Those are the developer’s product descriptions, not independent findings about update reliability or ease of use. Its official overview also describes a modified GNOME desktop with tools for customization, app discovery, web apps and terminal use.
How do its desktop and app tools help new users?
stillControl: choose a familiar layout
stillControl offers preset desktop layouts and controls for extensions and appearance, according to stillHQ and the 10.1 announcement. The default layout is intended to combine familiar elements associated with Windows and macOS. This gives users a way to adjust the desktop without having to begin by assembling a layout themselves; the sources do not establish how closely the presets match any particular operating system.

stillCenter is described as a curated place to find software. Together with Quick Setup’s first-boot app selection, it gives users two points to consider what they want installed: during initial setup and later through the desktop’s app-discovery tool.
SWAI and stillTerminal: extend the desktop
stillHQ describes SWAI as a tool for creating Electron-based web apps that integrate with the desktop. stillTerminal is described as providing container and SSH support. These tools broaden what the environment offers, although the available descriptions do not establish that a new Linux user needs to use them during initial setup.

What changed in stillOS 10.2?
The official news page dates stillOS 10.2 to July 14, 2026, and says it updates core desktop components to GNOME 49. It also lists improvements to stillExplore, stillTerminal, SWAI, Quick Setup, stillCenter and stillControl. This is version-specific context, not a claim that 10.2 remains the newest release: the page provides a dated entry, and the available sources do not establish a later release status.
The installation guide is described as built on stillOS 10.2. A SourceForge listing separately identifies a stillOS 10.2-r2 ISO and gives a project update date of July 22, 2026. Check the official download and installation information for the version currently offered before beginning.

How do you install stillOS?
The official installation guide covers preparing installation media, booting from USB, installer choices, first-boot account and time-zone setup, browser selection and optional apps. Its recommended media-creation method uses Fedora Media Writer and a USB drive with at least 4 GB capacity.
- Back up important files. The guide covers backing up data and shrinking a Windows partition for dual boot. Take particular care before changing partitions, and follow the guide for your machine and chosen installation.
- Prepare a USB drive. Use a blank or expendable drive with at least 4 GB capacity. Writing the image erases all data on the USB stick.
- Create the installation media and boot from it. Follow the guide’s instructions for using Fedora Media Writer and starting the computer from USB.
- Complete installation and first-boot setup. The guide covers the installer’s choices, account and time-zone setup, browser selection and optional application installation.
Internet access is not required to install, according to the guide, though it helps set the date and time automatically. The guide warns that stillOS does not support legacy BIOS-based systems, so check your computer’s boot configuration before proceeding.

Is stillOS one of the best Linux onboarding experiences?
The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: stillOS has several deliberate features intended to ease setup, including a first-boot app choice, preset desktop layouts and curated app discovery. It does not include an independent study or comparative benchmark that establishes a “best” ranking across Linux distributions. Whether the experience suits you will depend on how much guidance you want and whether its desktop tools match your preferences.
