Star Wars Genesis is an open-world RPG because it gives you control over your allegiance, character role, routes through a converted galaxy, equipment, ships and long-term progression. It is not a standalone Star Wars game, however: it is a free, unofficial total-conversion modlist for the Steam PC version of Starfield, and it remains an expanding work in progress. That distinction explains both its unusually broad freedom and its rougher, less complete experience than a finished commercial Jedi adventure.

What Star Wars Genesis actually is

Genesis is a fan-made total conversion for the Steam PC edition of Starfield. A total conversion changes the identity of the host game rather than adding a few costumes or weapons. Genesis replaces and reshapes the setting with its own Star Wars-inspired universe, story content, factions, locations, equipment, music and progression systems.

DeityVengy describes it as a “free, fan-made total conversion project for Starfield,” developed and continuously expanded by its creator. The project is free, single-player, offline and non-commercial, but it cannot run without an installed copy of Starfield. You are therefore installing a large, curated modification of an existing PC game, not downloading an independent executable that launches by itself.

The official project description says its goal is “an immersive RPG with a unique story and expansive endgame, rather than a re-skin of Starfield with the same flaws.” That goal is important: Genesis is designed to change how you inhabit the world and make decisions, not merely to place familiar visual references inside the original game.

Why Genesis qualifies as an open-world RPG

1. You choose a political identity, not just a combat build

A conventional Jedi-centered game usually gives you one authored protagonist whose identity and central conflict are established by the campaign. Genesis starts from a wider role-playing premise. You can align with the Empire, join the Rebellion or pursue an independent path. Those choices affect the kind of character you are pretending to be and the activities that make sense for that character.

This is more than selecting a dialogue option. Faction alignment gives the sandbox a direction: an Imperial character, a Rebel operative and an unaffiliated explorer can approach the same galaxy with different priorities. The project includes faction storylines and enemy groups, so your allegiance is connected to quests, encounters and progression rather than being only a cosmetic label.

2. The world is built for roaming and self-directed objectives

Genesis sends players through converted locations across the galaxy instead of moving them through a short sequence of authored levels. Exploration is one of the main activities: you can travel, investigate locations, accept side quests, collect equipment, pilot ships and decide when to advance the central story.

That structure creates the defining open-world question: “What do I want to do next?” You might pursue a faction objective, search for better gear, work on crafting, investigate a location, or simply use your ship to reach another part of the setting. The game’s value is not limited to seeing the next cutscene in order.

3. Several role fantasies are supported

Genesis adds Force abilities, replacement weapons, ships, crafting and gear progression. These systems let you build a character around more than one narrow fantasy. A player can lean into Force powers, conventional firearms, ship-based play, equipment collection or a hybrid approach while still participating in the broader RPG systems.

The project also adds new factions, bosses and improved enemy AI, according to The Escapist’s report updated January 5, 2026. Those changes matter because an open-world RPG needs repeatable reasons to use its systems. New enemies and locations give exploration and combat a purpose beyond completing the main quest.

4. Progression continues after the major story beats

Genesis is designed with a long tail of activities rather than a single finish line. Crafting, equipment upgrades, ship use, side quests and an expanding endgame give you reasons to continue after completing available story content. The endgame is still being developed, so its scope can change as the project receives updates.

This is the difference between an open-world RPG and a linear action game with large levels: progression is distributed across systems that you can pursue in different orders. The trade-off is that systemic freedom can feel less tightly authored. Not every activity has the same narrative weight, and the experience may feel uneven while the project is unfinished.

How Genesis differs from a linear Jedi game

Comparison point Star Wars Genesis Linear Jedi-style campaign
Player role Choose an Imperial, Rebel or independent path, with multiple equipment and activity fantasies. Primarily follows one authored Jedi-centered hero.
World structure Galaxy-wide exploration, ships, side activities and systems that can be pursued in different orders. Directed levels and campaign beats generally determine the next major destination.
Progression Faction goals, Force abilities, weapons, crafting, gear collection, ships and a developing endgame. A narrower progression arc built around the campaign’s combat and traversal loop.
Narrative status Expanding fan project with an available campaign and sandbox content; not content-complete. Finished commercial story designed as a complete release.
Installation Requires Steam Starfield, the Shattered Space expansion, Wabbajack, Nexus authentication, English settings and an internal NVMe installation. Buy, install and launch the game through its supported storefront.
Canon position Uses its own lore and universe, separate from official Star Wars continuity. Released as an official Star Wars story within its publisher’s continuity framework.

The comparison is not a claim that Genesis is simply “better” than a linear Jedi game. They target different pleasures. A directed game can deliver denser pacing, clearer character arcs and more controlled set pieces. Genesis offers more room to invent a role and make the galaxy your own, but its story density and polish are limited by its fan-made, continuously changing status.

How much story and sandbox content is available?

An iTechGuides estimate from 2026 puts the current experience at approximately 20–30 hours of structured story, plus another 10–20 hours of progression-focused sandbox play. Those figures are estimates, not a guaranteed completion time: exploration habits, difficulty, side-quest choices and future updates can change the total.

The official site says thousands of people worldwide have installed and enjoyed Genesis over the past two years. That is the project’s own claim and is not an independently audited user count.

What you must install before playing

The setup is closer to assembling a technical modlist than installing a normal game. The current guide lists these prerequisites:

  • The Steam PC version of Starfield.
  • The Shattered Space expansion.
  • English-language settings for the supported installation.
  • Wabbajack, the modlist installer that automates much of the download and assembly process.
  • Nexus authentication so Wabbajack can obtain the required files.
  • An internal NVMe installation, as specified by the guide.
  • A clean, compatible profile rather than a heavily modified existing Starfield setup.

Because the modlist depends on the host game and its expansion, an Xbox copy or another edition should not be assumed to work. The researched guide specifically identifies the Steam PC version as the supported base.

Installation workflow

  1. Prepare the base game. Install the Steam PC version of Starfield and install Shattered Space. Keep the game in English and update it according to the version supported by the Genesis instructions you are following.
  2. Start from a clean profile. Remove or disable unrelated modifications and avoid carrying an old, heavily customized profile into the Genesis installation. Conflicting files can produce crashes, missing assets or scripts that fail to initialize.
  3. Install Wabbajack. Use Wabbajack to select the Genesis modlist. The utility handles much of the downloading, ordering and assembly, but it does not turn Genesis into a standalone game.
  4. Authenticate with Nexus. Sign in when Wabbajack requests Nexus access. Authentication is part of the listed setup requirements because the installer must retrieve the mod files used by the list.
  5. Choose an internal NVMe location. Follow the guide’s storage requirement rather than placing the installation on an unsupported drive or removable device. Keep the base game and modlist paths clear and consistent so the installer can locate every file.
  6. Allow the list to finish. Do not launch early or manually rearrange files while Wabbajack is assembling the installation. Interrupting the process can leave an incomplete list that looks installed but fails at startup.
  7. Launch through the Genesis installation. Use the generated modlist launch method and read any first-run prompts. Do not launch a plain Starfield shortcut and expect the total conversion to appear automatically.

Wabbajack reduces repetitive manual work, but troubleshooting remains part of the experience. If an installation fails, first verify the Steam edition, expansion ownership, English setting, Nexus authentication, clean profile and internal NVMe path before changing individual mods.

Can Genesis run on Steam Deck or ROG Ally?

The current guide lists both Steam Deck and ROG Ally as incompatible. That means you should not purchase or assemble the modlist expecting either handheld to be a supported target. The requirement is not merely whether the base game can launch on a handheld; Genesis depends on a specific PC modlist workflow, storage arrangement and compatibility profile.

The supported target described by the guide is a Steam PC installation with the required expansion and internal NVMe storage. If you need a portable Star Wars RPG, a conventional supported release is a safer choice than trying to force Genesis onto an unsupported device.

Is Genesis official Star Wars canon?

No. Genesis uses its own lore and universe, similar to Star Wars but separate from official continuity. It is a fan modification and should not be treated as an official product from the rights holders or as a canonical continuation of any film or game storyline.

Its unofficial status also explains the project’s boundaries. The team can radically change factions, music, weapons, quests, enemies and locations, but it cannot offer the same guaranteed support, fixed feature set or release completeness as a commercial game. Updates may expand the endgame or alter how systems work.

What the open-world trade-off feels like in practice

Freedom over pacing

Genesis lets you decide whether to follow faction objectives, explore, craft, collect gear or pursue other activities. That freedom can make a playthrough feel personal, but it also means the game is less likely to deliver the carefully timed escalation of a linear campaign.

Systems over authored density

Ships, equipment, Force abilities, crafting and enemy variety create a broad toolbox. A linear Jedi game may devote more of its runtime to bespoke encounters and character-focused scenes; Genesis distributes its content across reusable systems and a larger sandbox.

Expansion over finality

Genesis is still being expanded. Starting now gives you access to the current Acts, faction questlines and sandbox activities, but it also means accepting that the project’s eventual scope and balance are not settled. Players who want a definitive ending should prefer a completed release; players who enjoy evolving mod projects may value the ongoing development.

Who should play Star Wars Genesis?

  • Choose Genesis if you want to role-play as more than a single Jedi, explore a converted galaxy, choose a faction, pilot ships and build a character through systems such as crafting, gear and Force abilities.
  • Choose a linear Jedi adventure if your priority is a finished, tightly paced campaign with a single protagonist, controlled level progression and fewer installation decisions.
  • Wait or verify compatibility if you only have an Xbox copy, lack the Shattered Space expansion, use Steam Deck or ROG Ally, or do not have an internal NVMe installation that meets the guide’s requirement.

Bottom line: why it is an open-world RPG

Genesis earns the open-world RPG label through player-directed allegiance, galaxy-wide exploration, multiple role fantasies and progression that continues through gear, crafting, ships, Force abilities, side quests and an expanding endgame. Those systems let you decide what kind of character you are and what to do next, instead of following one Jedi through a fixed sequence of levels.

Its limitations are inseparable from that design: Genesis is an unofficial, separate-lore total conversion for the Steam PC version of Starfield, requires a technical Wabbajack setup and remains unfinished. It is best understood as a broad, evolving sandbox for players who value agency over the polished narrative density of a linear Jedi game.
