Original video game concept art can be valuable because it is a one-of-a-kind physical object, a record of how a game was designed, and sometimes a culturally important artifact tied to a notable title or creator. Those qualities explain collector and museum interest, but they do not create a universal price. The value of a particular sheet depends on its documented history, game connection, attribution, uniqueness, condition, and credible evidence from comparable completed sales.
Value is not the same as rarity or age
“Original” answers only one question: whether the physical work is the artist’s or development team’s source artwork rather than a print, scan, or later reproduction. It does not prove who made it, when it was made, whether it was used during development, or how it reached the current owner. Those provenance questions are separate and often determine whether a buyer will trust the object.
Concept art also has a dual identity. It is artwork in its own right, and it is development documentation. A sketch can show an abandoned character, an environment that changed substantially, or a visual decision that shaped the finished game. The Library of Congress interview with Smithsonian curator Georgina Goodlander notes that concept art and sketches were among the supporting materials for the Smithsonian’s The Art of Video Games exhibition (Library of Congress, 2012).

Museums make a related but distinct argument: games and their surrounding materials can be studied and preserved as creative and cultural works. When the Smithsonian American Art Museum announced its video-game acquisitions, director Elizabeth Broun said, “The best video games are a great expression of art and culture in our democracy” (Smithsonian Institution, December 17, 2013). That statement supports cultural significance; it is not an appraisal or a promise of a sale price.

The factors that can increase interest in a specific work

How to establish that concept art is original
There is no substitute for a documented chain of evidence. Treat an attractive image with an unclear story as unverified, even if it resembles a famous game.
- Describe the physical object. Record the support (paper, board, cel, canvas, or another material), dimensions, media, marks on the front and back, overlays, production holes, paste-ups, and any labels. Photograph it in place before cleaning, trimming, or reframing.
- Identify the claimed creator and date. Look for a signature, initials, dated production note, assignment code, or studio stamp. A signature by itself does not establish authorship; compare it with reliable contemporaneous records and avoid treating an inferred style as proof.
- Connect it to a development record. A script page, art brief, design document, developer note, interview, or studio inventory can explain what the image was for. The Library of Congress’s preservation discussions emphasize the value of technical documentation, rights information, and interviews when game materials are collected and researched (Library of Congress, 2012).
- Build the ownership history. Preserve invoices, letters, estate records, employee-sale documentation, and prior catalog descriptions. Note dates and owners without filling gaps with assumptions. A credible but incomplete history should be labeled incomplete.
- Check whether the image is a reproduction. Compare paper fibers, printing patterns, transfer lines, ink or paint layering, and dimensions with known production practices. A high-resolution print, promotional illustration, or later redraw can be collectible while still being different from an original development work.
- Obtain an independent opinion when the stakes justify it. A specialist familiar with production art can assess materials and documentation. Ask what evidence was examined, what remains uncertain, and whether the opinion is an attribution, an authentication, or only an identification of the game or character.
Museum practice illustrates why context matters. The Museum of Modern Art describes preserving not only game software and hardware but also source code, documentation, and designer interviews (MoMA, “When Video Games Came to the Museum,” 2022). For a private collector, equivalent development records can make an object intelligible without pretending that museum acquisition procedures are a mandatory art-market standard.
Why a clear connection to the game matters
A sheet tied to a recognizable title, character, environment, or pivotal design change gives a buyer a reason to care beyond the image’s appearance. The strongest connections are contemporaneous: an art brief naming the asset, a dated developer annotation, a production folder, or an interview that identifies the drawing. A later certificate or seller description can organize evidence, but it is weaker when no earlier record supports it.

Development context can also explain why an apparently rough sketch is important. An abandoned design may document a major change; a final model sheet may show how a character was standardized across the game. Do not infer that importance from polish alone. The relevant question is what the work records and how securely that role can be demonstrated.
How cultural significance differs from market price
Museums collect games and related records to study, exhibit, and preserve a medium. That institutional activity can increase the historical importance of concept art, especially when it fills a gap in the record of a genre, studio, technology, or influential design practice. It does not establish what a private buyer will pay.
Goodlander’s Smithsonian interview presents concept art and sketches as exhibition evidence, while the Smithsonian’s 2013 acquisition release frames games as artistic and cultural works. These sources support a cultural-value argument, not a price list. A work can be historically meaningful yet difficult to sell, or commercially sought after while offering little additional information about game development.

Rarity, condition, and medium: practical considerations without a formula
Originals are often unique, but uniqueness has a two-sided effect. It can make a piece especially desirable, while also leaving no identical work against which to measure it. A print, licensed poster, production cel, animator’s layout, and painted environment are different objects even when they depict the same character.
Condition should be recorded rather than converted into an invented percentage deduction. Note paper brittleness, foxing, fading, flaking, water damage, tape, trimming, pinholes, detached overlays, smoke odor, and repairs. Record whether the work has been mounted, exposed to light, or conserved, and retain conservation reports. Medium matters because graphite, marker, gouache, acrylic, collage, and mixed-media layers age differently; it also affects safe storage and display.
Use archival, non-reactive enclosures and limit light exposure, humidity swings, and handling. These care steps protect the object; they do not by themselves raise its market value.

How to think about “How much is it worth?”
There is no defensible general price range for original video game concept art from the evidence available. A meaningful estimate requires item-specific proof and genuinely comparable completed transactions. A famous title does not make every related sketch valuable, and an obscure game’s surviving design document can be important without having an active market.
Collector guidance from Original Video Game Art (OVGA) recommends considering desirability and previous sales while warning that a perfect comparable may not exist until the particular work sells (OVGA collector resource). The same resource describes private sales as historically important. Treat that as collector commentary, not an audited transaction database or appraisal standard.

When comparing two works, assess provenance confidence, documented game connection, original-versus-reproduction status, medium and condition, completed comparable sales, and whether each cited figure is an asking or completed price. There is no established scoring system or numeric weighting for these axes, so present the evidence and uncertainty instead of producing a false precision.

A practical evaluation workflow for collectors
- Inventory the object. Capture measurements, materials, annotations, photographs, and current storage conditions.
- Separate facts from claims. Put documented dates and records in one column and seller or family recollections in another. Preserve the original wording of letters and catalog entries.
- Map the development role. Identify whether the work is a thumbnail, exploration, model sheet, environment layout, final asset guide, promotional image, or an unknown category.
- Test the chain of custody. Look for gaps, changes in description, inconsistent dimensions, or ownership transfers that cannot be explained.
- Find comparable transactions. Prefer dated, completed sales of similar originals. Exclude reproductions and do not average unrelated titles or media.
- State uncertainty in the conclusion. A responsible assessment can say “originality supported, artist attribution uncertain” or “game connection documented, market evidence limited.”
- Choose a sale route consistent with the evidence. A private sale may be appropriate when specialist buyers understand the material; an auction can provide public bidding but also fees, reserves, and no guarantee of a result. Obtain current terms directly from the venue.
Common mistakes that lead to inflated or misleading valuations
- Calling an image “original” because it is signed or printed on old paper.
- Using a game’s popularity as a substitute for proof that the sheet was used in its development.
- Applying a fixed multiplier for rarity, a famous artist, age, or condition when no verified market rule supports it.
- Quoting an unsold listing as if it were a transaction.
- Comparing a production original with a poster, book reproduction, or later promotional illustration.
- Removing annotations, tape, or mounting before they have been documented; those marks can be part of the object’s history.
- Confusing museum significance with liquidity. An institution may value an artifact for research even when few private buyers are available.
What a well-supported description should say
A transparent listing identifies the physical work, proposed creator, approximate date and development role, game connection, dimensions and medium, condition, provenance documents, and unresolved questions. It distinguishes “attributed to,” “signed by,” and “confirmed by contemporaneous records.” It labels every price as an asking figure or a completed sale and gives the transaction date and work description when known.
That level of precision helps a buyer judge the object on its own evidence. It also preserves the historical record that makes concept art useful to future researchers, curators, and players, regardless of the eventual sale price.
