Good Linux distribution release artwork is more than an attractive wallpaper. It expresses a recognizable release idea, adapts as a coordinated family of assets, remains usable across languages and future releases, can be reopened and edited with the project’s available free software, fits the target screens and crops, and arrives with unambiguous rights. The exact pixel dimensions and submission rules belong to each distribution’s current brief, so treat examples such as 16:9 and 2560×1440 as historical guidance rather than universal requirements.
Start with a release idea that can carry the whole package
A release theme gives the artwork an identity that users can recognize without reading a caption. Fedora’s documented release-artwork process begins concept work after the release name is selected and recommends an abstract idea connected to that name. That is a useful model for any distribution: let the name inform the visual direction without turning every image into a literal illustration.
Make the concept understandable without explanatory text
A strong concept has a visible visual logic—such as a particular geometry, material, lighting treatment, or transformation—that survives when the image is seen briefly or at a small size. A viewer should be able to describe what is distinctive about it, even if they do not know the release name. Written explanations can support a submission, but the artwork should not depend on them.
Abstraction also protects the concept from becoming a one-off poster. A literal object may work for a launch graphic and fail as a desktop background, installer banner, or compact countdown tile. A more flexible visual idea can be zoomed, cropped, simplified, or rearranged while still feeling like the same release.
Separate release identity from permanent distribution branding
Release artwork is supposed to change with each release. Fedora’s Design/Release Artwork Process describes it as “that part of Fedora artwork that changes with each new release.” Keep that changing layer distinct from enduring distribution marks and brand assets. The guidance reviewed here does not define comprehensive logo-placement rules, so use the distribution’s current brand guidance for logos, clear space, colors, and permitted variants rather than inventing a universal rule.

Design a visual system, not one isolated wallpaper
Wallpaper is usually the most visible deliverable, but a release package can include installer and website banners, splash screens, posters, disc labels, countdown graphics, desktop-login artwork, and other supporting pieces. Fedora lists these formats in its release-artwork documentation. Quality therefore depends on consistency across the family, not just on the strongest single image.
Define the elements that make variants belong together
- Core motif: the shape, texture, light pattern, or other device that identifies the release.
- Color and contrast rules: a controlled palette and readable foreground/background relationships.
- Composition vocabulary: recurring angles, framing, depth, or negative-space patterns.
- Typography treatment: when text is required for a specific placement, establish a hierarchy and spacing system separately from the wallpaper.
- Asset behavior: decide how the motif can be enlarged, repeated, simplified, or repositioned without losing recognition.
Plan for each placement before final rendering
A desktop background has different constraints from an installer banner. Desktop panels, icons, and application windows can cover large areas; a banner may be extremely shallow; a countdown graphic may need a clear text field. Build a master composition with intentional safe areas, then create variants for each placement. Do not simply stretch the wallpaper into every rectangle.
Check whether the focal point survives common crops and whether important detail remains visible behind desktop icons or panels. For text-heavy contexts, provide a layout with deliberate copy space and contrast instead of forcing text over a busy section of the wallpaper. These crop and placement checks are practical design criteria, not a claim that every distribution mandates a particular layout.
Use iteration as part of the process
Fedora’s process describes an iterative cycle: explore concepts, select a direction, refine it, package the main artwork, and develop supporting assets. Early thumbnails can reveal whether an idea works at multiple sizes before time is spent on detailed rendering. A useful review set includes a full-screen wallpaper, a narrow banner, a small tile, and a mock desktop view.
Make the artwork travel across languages, releases, and derivatives
Avoid words in wallpapers when broad reuse matters
Fedora’s artwork overview advises against text in wallpapers because words are difficult to translate and themes may be reused by derivatives. This is a Fedora policy, not a law for every project, but the underlying issue applies widely. A word-free wallpaper can serve users in different languages and can remain useful when the same image is packaged by another edition.
Text may still be appropriate in a website hero, announcement banner, or countdown tile that has a defined audience and localization process. Keep that copy in a separate, editable layout so translators can replace it without repainting the image. Treat logos and project marks separately and verify their use against the distribution’s own brand rules.

Do not bake a release number into a reusable theme
Fedora also recommends avoiding version numbers in wallpapers because users may want to keep a theme on an older release. A number permanently embedded in the image makes an otherwise durable design look obsolete. Put version-specific information in surrounding interface text or in a dedicated campaign asset instead.

Test the concept without its explanation
Show the image to reviewers without the release name or your design notes. Ask what visual idea they perceive, where their eye lands, and whether the image still feels intentional when cropped. If the concept only makes sense after reading a paragraph, simplify the visual signal or improve the supporting presentation rather than adding more words to the wallpaper.
Deliver editable, maintainable files
A polished export is not enough for a community project that may need future crops, translations, color adjustments, or accessibility fixes. Fedora says submissions should use formats readable by software available in Fedora, and identifies SVG and PNG as preferred image formats. It also emphasizes retaining non-lossy masters with vectors, raster layers, channels, and other editable information intact. Debian’s artwork requirements similarly call for source artwork suitable for future modification using free software.
Provide both final assets and source masters
- Export the requested final PNG, SVG, or other format at the project’s specified dimensions and color settings.
- Include the editable source file in a format that contributors using the project’s available free software can reopen.
- Retain vector paths, raster layers, masks, channels, and non-lossy image data instead of flattening the only copy.
- Package linked images, fonts, brushes, and generated elements or document exactly how they can be recreated.
- Name files and layers clearly so another contributor can locate the focal artwork, background, and text areas.
- Include the alternate crops and layout variants required by the submission brief.
Verify that another contributor can edit the source
Open the source on a clean system using tools available to the target project. Confirm that links resolve, fonts substitute acceptably or are converted where appropriate, colors remain correct, and an ordinary contributor can change a crop without rebuilding the file from scratch. This test is more meaningful than merely checking that the file opens on the original creator’s workstation.

Resolve licensing and contributor rights before submission
Rights are part of the design brief. Fedora states that contributions must be covered by its Contributor License Agreement and warns that incorporated art needs a compatible license, with attribution where required. Debian asks contributors to state the license under which artwork may be distributed with Debian and also requires modifiable source files. Those are project-specific instructions, so read the current call for submissions for the distribution you are targeting.
Audit every incorporated element
- Record who created photographs, illustrations, textures, typefaces, and third-party fragments.
- Confirm that each license permits the project’s intended copying, modification, and redistribution.
- Check whether attribution, notices, or share-alike conditions must accompany the package.
- Obtain model or property consent when identifiable people or protected locations are involved.
- Keep author and license metadata with the source package, not only in a private email.
- Sign the project’s contributor agreement if acceptance requires it.
Do not assume that a familiar Creative Commons label is automatically acceptable. Attribution and other license provisions still have to fit the distribution’s policy and the way the artwork will be shipped. If a component’s provenance or permission is uncertain, replace it before submission.
Fit the actual displays and the current technical brief
Resolution and aspect ratio should be checked against the project you are contributing to, not copied from a generic wallpaper article. Fedora’s historical supplemental-wallpaper guidance prefers 16:9 where possible and gives 2560×1440 as a common sufficient example, while welcoming larger files. That page concerns supplemental wallpaper from an older release cycle; it is not a current cross-distribution requirement.

Use a display-fit checklist
- Read the current submission brief for required aspect ratios, minimum dimensions, file formats, color profiles, and size limits.
- Preview the artwork at the target desktop resolutions and on the project’s likely default scaling settings.
- Inspect common crops, including wider and narrower screens, without moving the focal point into an unusable edge.
- Place representative desktop icons, panels, and windows over the image to check legibility and obstruction.
- Confirm that fine detail survives downscaling and that gradients do not band visibly.
- Render the supporting banners and tiles at their actual sizes rather than judging only the large master.
Larger-than-required source dimensions can preserve flexibility, but they do not excuse an unsuitable composition or an unnecessarily heavy package. Follow the current project limits when they conflict with historical examples.
A practical production workflow
- Read the current call for artwork. Capture the release name, deadlines, required assets, dimensions, software expectations, licensing terms, and submission channel.
- Generate several abstract concepts. Connect each idea to the release identity while testing whether it can work without embedded words or a version number.
- Prototype the system. Make quick wallpaper, banner, tile, and installer layouts from each candidate. Reject concepts that only work in one format.
- Select and refine one direction. Establish palette, motif, safe areas, contrast, and rules for text-bearing variants.
- Build editable masters. Keep vectors, layers, channels, and linked resources intact and use software the project can access.
- Create the complete asset family. Produce the requested crops and supporting graphics as intentional variants, not stretched exports.
- Run display and localization checks. Test desktop overlays, aspect ratios, small sizes, and the removal or replacement of any localized text.
- Complete the rights audit. Verify permissions, attribution, compatible licenses, contributor agreements, and metadata for every component.
- Package and peer-review the submission. Include final exports, source files, a concise asset map, and any required license notices; have another contributor reopen and inspect the package.
How to compare candidate concepts or submissions
When several proposals are plausible, score them against the same questions rather than choosing only the most spectacular render.
| Criterion | What to ask | Evidence of a strong result |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Does the idea connect to the distribution and release theme? | The visual idea is recognizable without a written explanation and remains distinct from permanent branding. |
| Reuse | Can users across languages, releases, and derivatives use it? | No unnecessary words or version numbers are baked into the wallpaper, and localized text is editable. |
| System fit | Does it translate to every required placement? | The motif, palette, and focal hierarchy survive wallpaper, banners, splashes, posters, and small tiles. |
| Technical maintainability | Can project contributors reopen and modify it? | Preferred formats and editable masters are supplied with intact vectors, layers, channels, and linked assets. |
| Rights clarity | Can the project legally distribute and modify every element? | Contributor terms, permissions, attribution, and distribution licenses are documented and compatible. |
| Display fit | Does it satisfy the current brief and survive real crops? | Required ratios and dimensions are met, while icons, panels, and text remain usable in representative previews. |
Common failure modes and fixes
A beautiful image that cannot become a package
Symptom: The wallpaper looks finished, but every banner crop cuts through the focal subject. Fix: Rework the master with flexible negative space and define alternate compositions before final export.
Text that makes the theme obsolete
Symptom: A release name or number is embedded in the background. Fix: Remove it from the reusable wallpaper and place localized, version-specific copy in separate campaign assets.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Unclear rights for a small component
Symptom: A texture, photograph, or font came from an unspecified source. Fix: document permission and license terms or replace the element with material whose provenance is clear.
Following an old dimension as if it were universal
Symptom: A submission is sized to 2560×1440 solely because an older Fedora page mentioned it. Fix: Treat that as a historical 16:9 example and verify the target distribution’s current specifications.
Final submission checklist
- The concept is tied to the release but is not a literal, explanatory illustration.
- The wallpaper and supporting graphics share a coherent visual system.
