Gold prices rise when investors and other buyers are willing to pay more for the metal relative to competing assets, and fall when that appeal weakens or supply and selling pressure increase. The most important influences are inflation-adjusted interest rates, the US dollar, uncertainty, investment flows, central-bank demand, jewelry and technology use, and mine and recycled supply. They interact, so none predicts every move on its own.

Recent figures illustrate why a single-cause explanation is rarely enough. The World Gold Council reported record-setting investment activity and 53 new all-time highs in the LBMA PM gold price during 2025, then reported ETF outflows and weaker jewelry consumption in Q2 2026. These are observations from different periods, not proof that one factor alone caused a price change.

Why interest rates and inflation-adjusted yields matter

Gold does not pay interest. An investor who holds it does not receive a coupon or dividend, so the return available from other assets affects the cost of choosing gold instead. The most relevant comparison is often the real yield: the interest rate on a bond after accounting for inflation.

When real yields rise, inflation-protected bonds and other interest-bearing assets may offer a more attractive return, increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold. That can weigh on demand and price. When real yields fall, the hurdle for holding non-yielding gold is lower, which can support it. This is a tendency, not a mechanical relationship: expectations, currency moves, risk appetite, and investor positioning can counter it.

In its July 2026 Q2 outlook, the World Gold Council said North American ETF flows could remain sensitive to real yields and monetary-policy expectations. The report described a US 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities yield near 2.5% as a level traditionally associated with higher opportunity cost for gold. That is market context from a dated outlook, not a permanent threshold or a rule that a particular yield must push gold down. The Council also cautioned that a rate hike is not automatically negative for gold.

How the US dollar affects gold

Gold is quoted internationally in US dollars. When the dollar strengthens, the metal can become more expensive in local-currency terms for buyers outside the United States, potentially limiting demand. A stronger dollar has often been a headwind for gold; a softer dollar can make it relatively more affordable and supportive.

The dollar can move alongside interest-rate expectations, which makes the two influences difficult to separate. In its Q2 2026 demand report, the World Gold Council cited a stronger dollar alongside upward adjustments to inflation and interest-rate expectations when discussing ETF outflows. That describes the mix of conditions reported for that quarter; it does not establish that the dollar alone caused gold to fall.

Why uncertainty can support gold—and why it sometimes does not

Investors may buy gold to diversify a portfolio or because they regard it as a safe haven during geopolitical, financial, or economic stress. If concern rises, those motives can increase demand. The World Gold Council described safe-haven and diversification motives as consistent themes in investment interest through 2025.

But uncertainty does not guarantee an immediate rise. During a crisis, investors may also seek cash, the dollar may strengthen, or expectations for interest rates may change. Those forces can offset safe-haven buying, at least temporarily. A gold move during a volatile period therefore reflects the balance of competing responses, not a simple measure of how worried investors are.

Investment flows can reinforce price moves

Investment demand is one of the channels through which market expectations reach the gold price. Physically backed exchange-traded funds, bars, and coins are visible forms of investment demand, while over-the-counter activity is less directly observable. Flows can support a trend, but they can also respond to one: a rising price may attract momentum-oriented buyers, while a reversal can encourage selling.

For 2025, the World Gold Council reported that global gold ETF holdings grew by 801 tonnes, the second-strongest year on record. It also recorded 53 new all-time highs in the LBMA PM gold price that year and an annual average LBMA PM price of US$3,431 per ounce. These figures show a year of strong prices and investment activity; they do not show that ETF buying alone caused the gains.

The pattern differed in Q2 2026. The Council reported a 45-tonne decline in global physically backed ETF holdings during the quarter. It associated North American selling with the price pullback, higher real yields, inflation concerns, and a stronger dollar. Bar-and-coin investment totaled 307.1 tonnes, down 3% year over year. ETF holdings and bar-and-coin purchases are reported indicators, but they do not capture every source of gold demand: OTC and other activity is less directly visible.

Central-bank buying adds a different kind of demand

Central banks may hold or buy gold as part of reserve diversification and risk management. Their purchases add demand beyond household investment and jewelry use, but official buying varies from period to period and estimates can be revised.

The World Gold Council reported 863 tonnes of central-bank purchases in 2025, a historically high level that was lower than the previous year. For Q2 2026, it reported 288.9 tonnes of demand from central banks and other institutions; that combined category should not be treated as a central-bank-only total. The Council’s July 2026 outlook expected a strong year for central-bank demand, but less than in 2025. That is a forecast published on July 30, 2026, not a report of what the full year ultimately delivered.

Revisions matter when comparing quarterly figures. The Council’s Q1 2026 report page carried an erratum: an earlier 244-tonne estimate was revised to 57 tonnes, with 187 tonnes reclassified as OTC and other demand in the Q2 report. The revised series, rather than the superseded 244-tonne figure, is the appropriate basis for describing the updated estimate.

Jewelry and technology demand respond differently to price

Jewelry is a major use of gold, but consumers may buy fewer tonnes when a high price makes purchases less affordable. Spending measured in dollars can rise even as the physical volume falls, so value and tonnage should not be confused.

In 2025, global jewelry consumption fell 18% year over year while the US-dollar gold price rose 67%; jewelry demand value nevertheless increased 18% to US$172 billion. In Q2 2026, jewelry consumption was 278.2 tonnes, down 17% year over year, while spending rose 14% to US$40 billion. These figures illustrate how a higher price can lift spending totals while constraining the amount of gold consumers buy.

Technology use is smaller than the major investment channels but still contributes to demand. The Council reported 80.4 tonnes of technology demand in Q2 2026, up 2% year over year. It said AI-related demand offset weakness in consumer electronics. For the periods covered by these reports, investment was the stronger demand driver than jewelry or technology.

Mine production and recycling shape the supply side

Demand is only half of the price picture. Newly mined gold and recycled metal add supply, while selling from existing holdings can affect how much metal reaches the market. Mine production usually responds slowly to prices because new projects take time and existing operations face practical constraints. A higher price therefore does not guarantee a quick increase in mine output.

The World Gold Council estimated full-year 2025 mine production at 3,671.6 tonnes and recycled gold at 1,404.3 tonnes. In Q2 2026, mine production was 965.6 tonnes, 2% higher than a year earlier; recycled gold was 326.1 tonnes, 6% lower year over year. The Council attributed the quarter’s recycling decline partly to lower prices compared with the prior quarter, which discouraged sales of old jewelry, and expected only modest supply growth.

Recycling can respond to price incentives, but not in a uniform or immediate way. Owners decide whether and when to sell, and quarter-to-quarter price direction can matter alongside the absolute price. As a result, a rally does not automatically produce enough recycled supply to offset stronger demand.

How to read the main price signals together

For a useful explanation of a price move, separate the signals by what they measure and how quickly they can change. Market prices reflect expectations as well as current transactions, while demand and supply reports record activity over a defined period.

Driver or indicator What it can signal What it cannot establish by itself
Real yields and monetary-policy expectations The opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold and the return available from inflation-protected bonds. A guaranteed direction for gold; other influences can offset the relationship.
US dollar Whether dollar-priced gold is becoming relatively more or less costly for buyers using other currencies. That currency movement alone caused a price rise or fall.
ETF holdings and bar-and-coin demand Visible investment activity that may reinforce or weaken a market trend. The full extent of investment activity, because OTC and other demand is less directly observable.
Central-bank demand Official-sector buying that can add meaningful demand over a reporting period. A stable level of buying in future periods; estimates and classifications can change.
Jewelry and technology consumption Physical use of gold by consumers and industry. Whether spending value and metal volume moved in the same direction.
Mine production and recycling How much new and recovered gold entered the market in a stated period. A fast supply response to price changes or a certain future level of output.

When several indicators move together, they can provide a coherent account of the environment without proving a single cause. For example, higher real yields, a stronger dollar, and ETF outflows can all be consistent with weaker investment appeal, but reported quarterly associations do not quantify each factor’s separate contribution. Conversely, increased uncertainty may coincide with a stronger dollar or a need for liquidity, making the short-term result mixed.

What the latest reported data do—and do not—say

The latest complete quarter in the World Gold Council series covered here is Q2 2026, with data through June 30 and publication on July 30, 2026. It reported total gold demand, including OTC, of 1,269 tonnes and an average LBMA PM gold price of US$4,506.29 per ounce for the quarter. Its second-half outlook expected investment and central-bank demand to remain supportive, while jewelry volumes and supply response remained constrained.

The Council stated in that outlook: “Investment should be the main driver of gold demand growth through the remainder of 2026, although a repeat of 2025’s exceptional strength looks unlikely.” This is a dated forecast, not a confirmed description of later 2026 results. The Council’s demand reports compile estimates from research providers and market sources, and the Q1 central-bank revision shows why historical figures may change.

For readers trying to understand a particular move, the practical approach is to identify its period first, then compare rates, the dollar, investment flows, official demand, consumer use, and supply for that same period. Avoid treating one headline number or a long-run tendency as a short-term prediction. Gold is volatile, and these drivers do not provide a reliable forecast or personalized investment advice.
