An esoteric programming language (esolang) is defined by an unusual design goal: it may explore a different computational model, impose extreme constraints, turn code into art, create a programming challenge, or make a joke. A joke language is defined specifically by humorous intent. That makes “joke language” a narrower category: a joke language can also be an esolang, but many esolangs are not primarily jokes.
The most reliable way to classify a borderline example is to ask what its defining feature is meant to accomplish. If the parody or punchline is the point, “joke language” is useful. If the central idea is minimalism, unusual computation, difficulty, visual form, or a theme—even when the result is funny—“esolang” explains more.
The distinction in one sentence
“Esolang” describes a broad family of programming languages created for purposes outside ordinary software development; “joke language” describes a language whose primary purpose is humor. The terms overlap because humor is one of the reasons people create esolangs, alongside experimentation, artistic expression, code-golf brevity, severe constraints, obfuscation, and deliberate difficulty.
This is a practical description of design intent, not a formal scientific taxonomy. Creators can have mixed motives, and community-maintained lists sometimes separate joke and semi-serious examples without producing a definitive boundary. Calling a language an esolang does not say that it is useless, and calling one a joke language does not prove that it cannot execute meaningful programs.

What “esoteric” tells you about a language
The label points to an unusual relationship between a language and programming practice. Mainstream languages are generally optimized for writing, maintaining, and deploying software. Esolangs deliberately make some other property more important.
Unusual computational ideas
A language may use a computational model that looks unlike familiar text-and-statement languages. Befunge is associated with two-dimensional programs and directional control flow: the layout of the source itself affects execution. The attraction is the model, not a punchline about conventional programming.
Extreme minimalism
Another language may reduce its instruction set to an extreme. Brainfuck has eight command characters. Its tiny vocabulary creates a constraint that programmers study and work around; the scholarly introduction by Sebastian Morr notes that Brainfuck can be shown to be Turing-complete. The language can therefore be computationally expressive even though its surface syntax is intentionally tiny.
Difficulty and obfuscation
Some esolangs make programming exceptionally hard on purpose. Malbolge is presented as a language designed to be exceptionally difficult to use. Difficulty can be the central experiment: the language tests what programming feels like under hostile rules rather than delivering a comic premise.
Art, theme, or presentation
In a themed language, the source is designed to resemble another form. Shakespeare shapes programs like plays, making dramatic structure part of the programming experience. The unusual presentation is an artistic or thematic objective even when readers find it amusing.

Jokes and parody
Humor is also a legitimate esolang goal. A creator may parody programming conventions, exaggerate a language feature, or design a language around a gag. In that case the language belongs to both categories: its implementation is esoteric, and its defining motivation is comic.
Why the categories overlap
The categories describe different dimensions. “Esolang” answers, “What kind of design project is this?” “Joke language” answers, “Why was it made?” A single language can satisfy both descriptions, while either label alone may omit useful information.

INTERCAL is a clear overlap case. The specialist Esolang community reference identifies it as the earliest known deliberately esoteric language, designed in 1972 by Donald R. Woods and James M. Lyon. It was designed to be unlike conventional languages and is recognized as a parody of mainstream language design from its era. Its comic PLEASE DO convention illustrates how a joke can be embedded in an executable language whose broader design is also an esolang experiment.
The reverse distinction matters too. A joke language may be executable and still be best understood as a joke first. The Esolang overview notes that Ook! is usable for programming, while HQ9+ is not usable for programming in the ordinary sense. Usability therefore cannot separate joke languages from esolangs: an executable joke language can exist, and an esolang built around a serious computational constraint can also be highly impractical.

The table is a guide to interpretation rather than a legal test. Community classifications are maintained by enthusiasts, and mixed-intent languages will not always fit one box.

Examples that show the boundary
INTERCAL: parody with an esoteric design
INTERCAL demonstrates the overlap most directly. Its 1972 origin, deliberate distance from conventional languages, and parody of contemporary language design make the comic intent evident. A convention such as PLEASE DO functions as a joke, but the language is still studied as an esolang because its design intentionally departs from ordinary programming practice.

Brainfuck: constraint and minimalism
Brainfuck is a better example of an esolang whose central hook is not necessarily a standalone joke. Its eight command characters impose an unusually severe interface. Morr’s scholarly introduction describes it as capable of universal computation. That combination—very small syntax and substantial computational power—makes it useful for discussing language minimalism, regardless of whether individual programs or presentations are humorous.
Befunge: a different geometry of code
Befunge treats a two-dimensional arrangement and directional control flow as part of the language idea. The novelty lies in how execution moves through the program space. It can be playful to read, but “joke language” would miss the computational experiment that motivates its design.
Malbolge: difficulty as the point
Malbolge is presented as exceptionally difficult to use. A language can be intentionally hostile, obscure, or challenging without having a parody as its primary objective. It is therefore informative to call it an esolang even if programmers react to the difficulty with humor.
Shakespeare: a thematic programming form
Shakespeare programs are shaped like plays. The theatrical form is not merely decorative: it supplies the language’s vocabulary and presentation. This is an example of an artistic or thematic esolang whose unusual surface does not depend on a single joke.

Ook! and HQ9+: executable status is not the dividing line
The Esolang overview uses Ook! and HQ9+ to show why “can it run?” is an unreliable classifier. Ook! is described as usable for programming, whereas HQ9+ is described as not usable for programming. Both are discussed among joke-oriented languages, demonstrating that implementation capability varies within that group.
Why Turing-completeness does not settle the question
Turing-completeness means that a computational system can, in principle, express any computation that a Turing machine can, given the usual assumptions about time and memory. It does not tell you why the system was created, how pleasant it is to use, or whether its syntax is intended as satire.
Brainfuck is the important counterexample to a common shortcut. Its eight-character instruction set can still support universal computation, so a tiny language is not automatically computationally trivial. Conversely, a language can be a successful joke without being designed for general-purpose computation. Treat universality as a property to investigate for a particular language, not as the boundary between “serious” and “not serious.”

When a language combines humor, experimentation, and challenge, use the following sequence rather than relying on its appearance.

Look for whether the creator emphasizes parody, a computational experiment, minimality, difficulty, art, or a theme.
- Ask what the constraint accomplishes. If an awkward syntax exists to land a gag, the joke label is central. If it explores a model, aesthetic, or programming limitation, “esolang” adds important information.
- Separate intent from capability. Check whether the language has an interpreter or meaningful computational behavior, but do not use executability as a synonym for seriousness.
- Treat universality as a technical fact. If Turing-completeness is established, report it as such; do not infer the creator’s motives from it.
- Check community classification cautiously. Specialist lists can reveal how practitioners describe the language, but they are community-maintained and may not resolve mixed-intent cases.
- Use both labels when both explain the evidence. “A joke-oriented esolang” is often more precise than forcing a choice.
This method avoids two opposite errors: calling every strange language a joke, and treating every esolang as a solemn research project.

Where the history fits
The specialist Esolang community reference identifies INTERCAL, designed in 1972, as the earliest known deliberately esoteric language. It lists Brainfuck and Befunge as examples from 1993. Those dates describe the community reference’s account rather than a universally agreed formal starting point; the field has no single standards body that assigns an official first language.
More recent scholarship also argues against dismissing the entire area as pointless. Jeremy Singer and Steve Draper’s 2025 essay, “Let’s Take Esoteric Programming Languages Seriously,” surveys varied motivations and discusses educational and reflective value. The institutional repository record places the work in the Onward! ’25 proceedings, held October 12–18, 2025. Its argument is not that every esolang is practical, but that unusual constraints can help people reflect on programming and language design.
Sebastian Morr captures the breadth of those motives in the sentence: “These so-called ‘esoteric’ programming languages have other purposes: To entertain, to be beautiful, or to make a point.” That description leaves room for jokes while showing why humor is only one possible purpose.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“Every esolang is a joke.”
False. Brainfuck, Befunge, Malbolge, and Shakespeare illustrate minimal, computational, difficult, and artistic aims that are not reducible to a punchline.
“A joke language cannot work.”
False. The Esolang overview specifically notes usable joke-oriented examples such as Ook!, while also noting non-programming examples such as HQ9+.
“A serious esolang must be Turing-complete.”
False. Universal computation can be an interesting property, but it is not the definition of an esolang and does not determine whether the creator’s purpose was humorous, artistic, or experimental.
“Calling something esoteric means calling it worthless.”
False. The term usually signals a design goal outside routine software production. The 2025 scholarly discussion treats constraints as opportunities for learning and reflection, even while acknowledging the field’s comic and challenging sides.

The clearest answer for readers
An esoteric programming language is the broad category: it uses programming to explore an unusual idea, restriction, aesthetic, challenge, or joke. A joke language is the narrower purpose-based category: its defining reason for existing is humor or parody. Because those descriptions operate at different levels, overlap is expected. Describe the language by the motive that best explains its defining feature, and add the second label when it genuinely contributes information.
