A video game theme park is the complete park destination; a video game-themed land is a bounded area inside a larger park. Super Nintendo World is the clearest example: official Nintendo and Universal descriptions call it a themed land or world, while Universal Epic Universe is the theme park that contains it.
The basic distinction: destination versus district
“Theme park” and “themed land” describe different levels of a destination. A theme park is the whole property a guest visits, with its own entrance, park-wide map and collection of themed areas. A video game-themed land is one defined area within that larger property. It has its own visual identity and story, but it remains part of the host park’s overall layout and operation.
This is a practical distinction drawn from how operators describe real parks, not a formal category established by a regulator or an industry-wide rulebook. Official materials use terms such as “themed land,” “immersive land” and “world.” The important question is where the boundaries sit: does the video-game setting contain the entire destination, or does it occupy one section of a broader park?

Why the boundary matters more than the number of rides
A land can feel like a complete mini-destination. It may have a signature attraction, interactive games, restaurants, shops, detailed scenery and costumed character encounters. Those features make the area immersive, but they do not turn it into a separate theme park. The deciding factor is its relationship to the surrounding property.
#1 Best Overall
Counting attractions is therefore a poor way to classify a place. A large land may have more activities than a small independent park, while a park may contain only a few major rides in one of its worlds. Classification depends on the area’s boundary and whether it is one component of a larger park.
For visitors, the distinction affects how they understand maps, admission information and time planning. A land is a destination within a destination: reaching it, spending time there and leaving it all happen within the context of the host park. The exact ticketing and reservation rules vary by operator and location, so the name alone should not be treated as a promise about admission.
What a video game-themed land can contain
The word “land” does not imply a small or bare area. Official descriptions of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD show how much can fit within a single themed section.
Rides and attractions
At Universal Studios Hollywood, Nintendo’s description lists Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. At Universal Epic Universe, Universal lists that attraction alongside Yoshi’s Adventure and Mine-Cart Madness. The attraction mix can differ by location, but the rides remain components of the Nintendo-themed area rather than evidence of a separate Nintendo park.
Interactive play
Interactive activities let guests perform actions in the environment rather than only watch a show or ride a vehicle. Universal and Nintendo describe gameplay that can connect to a park app and track progress. This is an added layer of the land’s design, not the definition of a theme park.

Food and shopping
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD includes themed dining and retail. Hollywood’s official description names Toadstool Cafe and the 1-UP Factory. Official materials also mention character apparel, hats, plush, toys and souvenirs. These commercial and hospitality features help a land operate as a self-contained experience while it remains inside the larger park.
Characters and environmental storytelling
Character encounters and scenery reinforce the setting between attractions. A land can present streets, buildings, interactive objects and recognizable characters as one continuous game-inspired environment. That continuity is why guests may describe the area as a “world” even though the operator classifies it as one part of a park.
The clearest comparison: Universal Epic Universe and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
Universal Epic Universe provides a direct, official example of the park-versus-land relationship. Universal announced that the park opened on May 22, 2025 and described it as a five-world theme park. Its worlds are:
- Celestial Park
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
- SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- Dark Universe
In this structure, Epic Universe is the whole park. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is one of its five worlds. Universal said Epic Universe included more than 50 experiences across those five worlds at opening; that is the operator’s opening-day count for this specific park, not a general threshold that separates parks from lands.
Within Epic Universe’s Nintendo world, Universal lists Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country. The listed experiences include Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, Mine-Cart Madness, themed food, character encounters, shops and interactive play. The extensive line-up demonstrates that a land can occupy a substantial amount of a park and still be only one of the park’s component worlds.

How the same land is described at different parks
The classification becomes easier to see when the same Nintendo concept is placed in different host parks.
Universal Studios Hollywood
Nintendo’s March 10, 2022 announcement called SUPER NINTENDO WORLD an immersive themed land within an expanded area of Universal Studios Hollywood. Nintendo’s 2023 opening announcement again described the Hollywood location as a land and identified Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, interactive areas, Toadstool Cafe and the 1-UP Factory. Because Universal Studios Hollywood is the host park, the Nintendo area is not a standalone Nintendo theme park.
Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan’s January 14, 2020 announcement described SUPER NINTENDO WORLD as an immersive land at the park, with rides, shops, a restaurant and interactive gameplay. The announcement explained the intended experience this way: “SUPER NINTENDO WORLD will feature a new level of theme park guest experience that blends the physical world with the world of the video game – bringing the world of Nintendo to life in a whole new way for guests.”
The same announcement quoted Thierry Coup, then Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Universal Creative, calling it “a life-size, living video game where you become one of the characters.” That language describes the intensity of the immersion, not a change in the area’s administrative status: it is still a land within Universal Studios Japan.
Expansion at Japan
Nintendo’s September 28, 2021 announcement said SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Japan would increase in size by approximately 70% with the planned Donkey Kong area. That percentage describes the expansion of that particular land. It does not mean that a land is normally 70% the size of a theme park, nor does it establish a universal size standard.

Why “world” can be confusing
Operators sometimes use “world” as a marketing or design term for an immersive area. At Epic Universe, Universal calls each major themed area a world, including SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. In ordinary conversation, “world” can sound as though it means a complete park, but the map shows the hierarchy: Epic Universe is the park, and its five worlds are sections inside it.
Read the surrounding wording rather than relying on the noun alone. “A world at [park name]” indicates an internal area. “A new theme park with five worlds” identifies the larger destination and then lists its components. This approach avoids treating promotional language as a technical definition.
What the Power-Up Band does—and what it does not do
The Super Nintendo World Power-Up Band is an optional, wrist-worn accessory described by Nintendo and Universal. It links with a park app and adds interactive gameplay, including the ability to collect digital coins, stamps and keys and to track scores through activities in the land.
The accessory enhances participation, but it is not what makes the area a land or a park. The official descriptions treat it as an optional experience feature; the materials do not say that it is required to enter SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. Guests should check the current rules for the specific park and date rather than assuming that an accessory is mandatory.
A reliable way to classify any video game attraction
When a new project is announced, use these checks instead of judging it by its branding or attraction count.
Best Value
- Identify the full property. Find the name of the destination that operates the entrance, park-wide map and overall guest experience.
- Look for internal boundaries. If the video-game setting is listed as one area, world or land on that map, it is a themed land.
- Check whether other themes share the property. Multiple unrelated worlds or lands strongly indicate that the video-game area is one component of a larger theme park.
- Separate features from classification. Rides, interactive games, dining, merchandise and characters describe what guests can do inside the area; they do not by themselves establish that it is a park.
- Read the operator’s exact location wording. “Within,” “at,” “world,” “land” and “park” reveal the relationship more reliably than fan shorthand or headlines.
Common misconceptions
“If it has several rides, it must be a park.”
No. A themed land can contain several rides and supporting experiences. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Epic Universe is an example: its rides, play areas, food and shops remain inside one of Epic Universe’s five worlds.
“A fully immersive land is automatically a standalone destination.”
Immersion describes design quality and continuity. The Hollywood and Japan descriptions use strong language about bringing Nintendo’s world to life, while still identifying the area as a land within an existing Universal park.
“The Power-Up Band is the dividing line.”
No. The band adds app-connected gameplay and score tracking. The park-versus-land distinction is based on physical and organizational scope, not on whether guests use a wearable accessory.

The practical distinction is useful, but the reviewed official materials do not establish a regulator or trade-body definition for that phrase. Use “theme park” for the whole destination and “video game-themed land” for a bounded area inside one.
Quick Recap
What visitors should take away
- A theme park is the complete destination and may contain several lands or worlds.
- A video game-themed land is one immersive section inside a host park.
