A video game is a hidden gem when it offers a distinctive, worthwhile experience yet remains relatively undiscovered by the particular audience being discussed. The phrase has two separate parts: evidence that the game deserves attention, and a clearly defined reason that its recognition is limited. There is no official review score, sales figure, player-count cutoff, or genre that automatically creates hidden-gem status.
The two-part meaning of “hidden gem”
“Hidden gem” is an informal judgment, not an industry classification. Calling a game one means you are making two claims at once. First, the game has concrete strengths—perhaps an unusual combat system, an unusually coherent story, a memorable atmosphere, or exceptionally thoughtful level design. Second, those strengths have not received as much attention as the speaker believes they deserve within a defined audience.
The audience matters. A title overlooked by players who prefer large action releases may be well known among strategy fans. A game with little coverage in one country may have an active following elsewhere. A release that was obscure at launch can become widely recognized years later. Always state who appears to have missed it and where: a platform, language community, genre audience, or time period.
Because the phrase is comparative, a game cannot be “hidden” in isolation. It is hidden from someone, somewhere, or at some point in its release history. The same title can be a personal discovery for one player, a community favorite for another, and a mainstream success for a third.

What makes the game worth discovering?
Small review counts or low visibility do not establish quality. Judge the experience itself, using specific features rather than general praise.
Distinctive mechanics
Explain what the player actually does and why it feels different. A strong candidate might combine familiar systems in an unusual way, make a normally secondary mechanic central, or create meaningful decisions through limitations. “Unique gameplay” is not enough; identify the input, rule, or decision that produces the difference and describe how consistently the game develops it.
Strong design and pacing
Good controls, readable feedback, purposeful levels, and pacing that respects the player can make a modest production deeply satisfying. Look for systems that support the intended experience instead of adding complexity for its own sake. A short game can qualify if every encounter is deliberate; a long one can qualify if its ideas continue to evolve rather than repeat.

Narrative value may come from writing, environmental detail, character relationships, or the way mechanics reinforce the theme. Describe the specific element that works—such as optional notes that change how a location is understood or choices that carry consequences—without claiming that every player will respond the same way.
Atmosphere and presentation
Visual style, sound, music, lighting, and interface can create a coherent mood even when a game lacks a large budget. A distinctive art direction or carefully used silence may be more memorable than technical spectacle. Make the connection to play: explain how presentation affects exploration, tension, humor, or emotional timing.

Accessibility and practical fit
A game can be valuable because it offers adjustable difficulty, remappable controls, readable text, subtitle options, or a session length that fits a particular audience. State the platform and relevant language or accessibility support when those details affect who can enjoy it. These qualities strengthen the “worth attention” side but do not, by themselves, prove that the game is overlooked.
What makes it hidden?
Define the overlooked audience
Use a sentence such as “It is little known among console players who follow major releases” or “It receives limited attention outside a specialist simulation community.” Avoid saying simply that a game is “unknown.” Public awareness has no single worldwide measure, and a title may be prominent in a niche community.
Consider release context
Timing can suppress recognition. A launch may coincide with several high-profile releases, arrive first on a less-used platform, receive little localization, or appear during a period when its genre attracts limited coverage. A game released quietly and later improved through updates may also be hard to discover through launch-day lists. Describe the concrete context rather than assigning an invented sales threshold.
Look at discoverability barriers
Storefront placement, search terms, tags, language support, recommendation systems, and the amount of independent coverage all affect whether interested players encounter a title. A game may be easy to buy yet difficult to find, or prominently listed in one storefront and buried in another. These are explanations for limited recognition, not proof that the game is artistically superior.
Separate evidence from impression
Anecdotes such as “none of my friends have heard of it” can explain a personal discovery but cannot establish broad obscurity. Stronger support comes from identifying the relevant platform or community and showing a pattern of limited coverage, recommendation, or discussion. If the available evidence is anecdotal, label it that way.

How Steam’s systems shape discovery
Steam is a useful example of why hiddenness is platform-specific. Valve says personalized recommendations depend on each user’s preferences and tastes. Its documentation also identifies purchases and play, language support, and accurate tags as factors in visibility. The details apply to Steam and can change as the storefront evolves; they are not a universal popularity formula. See Valve’s Steamworks documentation on visibility.
Valve’s documentation states: “As long as your game’s reviews are Mixed or above (40%+), review score is not a factor in algorithmic visibility.” Below that level, a game becomes Mostly Negative and is less likely to be featured. This describes Steam’s algorithmic visibility rules, not the behavior of console stores or other PC marketplaces, and it does not mean that reviews have no effect on what people choose to play.
Steam also says wishlists generally are not an algorithmic-visibility factor, except in contexts such as the Popular Upcoming tab. Wishlists can still send launch or discount notifications, so they influence discovery through notifications even when they do not directly raise ordinary algorithmic placement. The Steam Discovery Update describes personalized recommendations, the Discovery Queue, search and discovery tools, and community curator reviews.
Steam Curators are individuals, organizations, or groups that publish recommendations. One example, Hidden Gem Discovery, says it mainly focuses on niche and mid-range independent games and seeks niche or overlooked titles. It also describes declining games for reasons such as quality, an established intellectual property, audience fit, or insufficient time to review them. That page illustrates one curator’s selection policy; it is not an official definition or certification.
Labels that are often confused with “hidden gem”

A practical test for deciding whether a game qualifies
Use the following process when writing a recommendation, building a curator list, or deciding whether the label fits your own description.

- Specify the comparison group. Name the platform, region, genre community, or period in which recognition appears limited.
- Describe the core experience. Summarize the player’s main actions, progression, and objective in concrete terms.
- Identify two or three differentiators. Point to mechanics, narrative techniques, atmosphere, structure, or accessibility features that make the experience stand out.
- Match strengths to readers. Explain which tastes the game serves—for example, players who enjoy systemic experimentation, slow exploration, or compact story-driven campaigns.
- Gather evidence of limited recognition. Use platform context, release timing, language availability, coverage, or community visibility. Do not invent a sales, review-count, or player-count boundary.
- Check alternative explanations. A game may be easy to find but simply unappealing to your circle, or it may have a low review count because it launched recently. Distinguish those possibilities.
- State uncertainty. If your evidence is personal or community-specific, say so. “A hidden gem for readers who missed the 2022 PC release” is more accurate than “one of gaming’s best-kept secrets.”
- Reassess over time. Recognition changes after ports, discounts, updates, videos, or word of mouth. A label that was fair at launch may become misleading later.
How to compare two possible hidden gems
When choosing between candidates, compare them on the dimensions that affect the reader’s decision rather than ranking an abstract “hiddenness” score.

This approach prevents a common mistake: choosing the game with fewer reviews and calling it the better hidden gem. A comparison should show both why each candidate is rewarding and why its visibility differs for the reader’s specific context.

Use recommendation tools deliberately
On Steam, combine accurate tags and search terms with the Discovery Queue and personalized recommendations. Play history and purchases influence the recommendations you receive, so a new account may produce less useful results until it has enough preference signals. Treat every result as a lead, not an endorsement.
Follow curators whose tastes match yours
Curator lists can reduce the noise of a large catalog, especially when the curator explains why a game fits a particular audience. Read the curator’s criteria and recent activity. A recommendation reflects that group’s time, standards, and preferences; it does not certify universal quality.

Search by mechanics and mood
Queries such as “turn-based deckbuilding with short runs,” “quiet exploration with subtitles,” or “cooperative puzzle game for two” are more useful than searching for “hidden gems” alone. Specific terms connect your needs to tags, reviews, and community discussions.

Check practical details before buying
Confirm the supported operating system or console, controller requirements, language options, accessibility settings, update status, and refund rules for the storefront you use. A game can be an excellent fit in design but a poor recommendation if it cannot run on your hardware or lacks a necessary feature.
What broader evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2021 preprint by Ullmann, Politowski, Guéhéneuc, and Petrillo examined 200 video game projects and reported that none of the aspects they studied had a strong relationship with game success. The analysis covered team size, independence, genre, platform, graphical perspective, game mode, and development problems. Its sample and measures do not define hidden-gem status, and the result should not be expanded into a claim that genre, design, or production scale never matters. Likewise, review scores summarize the opinions and behavior of a particular reviewer population. They can help a reader estimate reception, but they cannot establish that a game is undiscovered, nor can they replace an explanation of what the game does well. Sales, player counts, and review totals are also time-sensitive and platform-specific; use them only with their date, region, and measurement context.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using “indie” as a synonym. Production independence and public recognition are different questions.
- Treating a low review count as proof. A recent release, regional store, or limited platform launch can produce few reviews without indicating exceptional quality.
- Calling every personal favorite hidden. Personal discovery is valid, but label it as a personal or audience-specific recommendation.
- Ignoring access barriers. Platform, language, control, and accessibility limits can explain who has not encountered a title.
- Generalizing one storefront’s algorithm. Steam’s documented rules do not describe every marketplace.
- Making an unqualified superlative. “The most overlooked game ever” requires evidence far beyond an individual list or curator page.
A precise way to use the label
The most credible recommendation pairs a concrete account of value with a bounded account of visibility: “This game uses an unusual [mechanic] to create [specific effect], and it remains little known among [named audience] because [documented release or discovery factor].” That structure tells readers what they may enjoy, who is likely to have missed it, and how confident they should be in the claim.
“Hidden gem” is therefore best treated as a useful conversation label, not a measurable award. It earns its place when the game’s qualities are explained in detail and the supposed hiddenness is tied to a real audience, platform, or moment in time.
