The most useful dataset for finding galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses is not simply the one with the largest sky area. It combines wide, deep, well-resolved imaging with documented image quality and masks, searchable source catalogs, and—when candidates must be validated—spectroscopic or reliable photometric redshifts. Labeled examples, candidate lists, and expert follow-up make discovery systems trainable and testable, but a machine-learning score, volunteer classification, or candidate flag is not the same as a confirmed lens.
For most projects, use a broad imaging survey to discover arcs, rings, and multiple images, then cross-match candidates with redshift and follow-up data. The right choice depends on whether you are discovering lenses, training a classifier, measuring morphology, or establishing the foreground/background geometry.
Start with the scientific question
A galaxy-scale strong lens occurs when a foreground galaxy bends light from a more distant object into visible arcs, rings, or multiple images. Those signatures determine the first dataset requirement: you need images with enough angular resolution, sensitivity, and suitable wavelength coverage to separate faint lensed structure from the foreground galaxy.
Dataset selection changes with the task:
- Candidate discovery: begin with a large-area imaging survey and inspect pixels, not just catalog rows.
- Foreground/background validation: add spectroscopy or carefully interpreted redshift estimates for both components.
- Training and triage: use morphology labels, simulations, candidate catalogs, and model outputs whose provenance and uncertainty are recorded.
- Physical modeling: retain calibrated images, point-spread-function information, masks, photometry, and redshift data rather than relying on a thumbnail or a single score.
Do not substitute a weak-lensing shape catalog for a strong-lens search. Weak-lensing analyses estimate statistical distortions across many galaxies; strong-lens searches look for individually recognizable systems such as arcs and Einstein rings.

The criteria that determine whether a dataset is useful
1. Footprint and survey overlap
A large footprint increases the number of possible foreground/background alignments, which matters because strong lenses are rare. However, compare the exact release footprint and usable area, not a mission-wide slogan. Overlap with spectroscopy, infrared imaging, or another optical survey can be more valuable than extra isolated area because it enables cross-matching and validation.
2. Resolution, seeing, and depth
Lensed features can be small, faint, and close to a bright foreground galaxy. Examine the image pixel scale, point-spread function or seeing, exposure depth, and coaddition method. A nominally deep image can still be poor for lens finding if the seeing blurs an arc into the lens light or if the coadd introduces artifacts. Depth also varies across fields and filters, so use the per-field quality information supplied with the release.
3. Wavelength and band coverage
Multiple bands help distinguish a foreground lens from a differently colored background source. Optical g, r, and z images can reveal color contrast and morphology; infrared measurements can add information about dusty or red systems. Infrared and optical data have different pixel scales, sensitivities, and coverage, so a band listed in a survey description is not evidence that every position has equal-quality imaging in that band.

4. Masks and image-quality metadata
Bright stars, detector defects, satellite trails, missing exposures, and edge effects can mimic arcs or hide real ones. A usable release should provide masks, inverse-variance or weight maps, coverage information, and quality flags. Record which pixels were excluded and whether a candidate lies in a region with unusual depth or seeing. Treat the footprint as a map of varying reliability rather than a uniform rectangle.
5. Catalog fields and image access
Source catalogs should provide stable object identifiers, sky positions, photometry, morphology or shape measurements, quality flags, and a link to the underlying image or cutout service. Catalogs are efficient for filtering and cross-matching, but lens morphology must be checked in image pixels. A catalog object can represent the foreground galaxy while the lensed source is blended, split into several detections, or absent as a separate row.
6. Redshifts and ancillary observations
Spectroscopic redshifts can demonstrate that the putative source lies behind the lens and can support mass and distance calculations. Photometric redshifts are useful when spectra are unavailable, but their uncertainty and catastrophic outlier rate must be retained. A redshift attached to a blended catalog object may describe the lens, the source, or a combined fit; verify the target identity and the measurement quality.

7. Labels, provenance, and validation
“Label” can mean several different things. Separate simulated examples, volunteer classifications, model predictions, candidate lists, expert-vetted objects, and spectroscopically supported systems. Store the label source, version, confidence or grade, and any selection criteria. A volunteer vote fraction or neural-network probability is valuable for ranking, but it does not establish confirmation by itself.

Useful resource families
| Resource family | Best use | What it contributes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide-field imaging and catalogs | Initial candidate discovery | Large sky area, multiband images, source catalogs, cutouts | Depth, seeing, pass count, and band coverage vary by release and position |
| Spectroscopic follow-up | Testing lens/source geometry and characterizing systems | Redshifts, redshift errors, observing-program metadata | A catalog may cover only a subset of a broader observing program |
| Morphology and citizen-science resources | Training, triage, and cross-checking | Volunteer classifications, model outputs, images, representations | Predictions and candidate labels are not automatically confirmations |
| Expert-vetted candidate releases | Benchmarking and targeted follow-up | Curated candidates, vetting steps, and lens models where available | Selected-area releases are not complete survey catalogs |
Key imaging option: DESI Legacy Surveys
The Legacy Surveys DR10 description documents optical and infrared imaging products, image stacks, source catalogs, online viewing, and routes to raw data. The original dedicated MzLS, DECaLS, and BASS imaging covered about 14,000 square degrees in optical g, r, and z bands and was augmented by four infrared bands from NEOWISE. DR10 also added public DECam imaging and extended the inference model over more than 20,000 square degrees.
Those figures describe the DR10 documentation and should not be treated as a uniform area or a current release total. The documentation shows that coverage differs by band and number of passes. Check the field-level tables, masks, and depth information before estimating completeness.
The Legacy Surveys homepage lists DR11 as the current release and describes source catalogs covering roughly 31,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky in optical and infrared bands. Release status and contents can change, so cite the release-specific documentation used for an analysis rather than silently mixing DR10 properties with DR11 files.
For a discovery pipeline, this resource family supplies the broad imaging foundation: query catalog positions, obtain multiband cutouts, apply quality and mask filters, and inspect candidate morphology. It does not by itself provide complete lens truth or guaranteed uniform sensitivity to every lens configuration.

Spectroscopic validation: the DESI Strong Lensing Catalog
The official DESI DR1 Strong Lensing Catalog documents spectroscopic observations of strong-lens systems. Its broader observing program seeks redshifts for both lensing galaxies and lensed sources for approximately 1,800 new candidate systems. The catalog page states that the presently documented content contains DR1 observations only and is a subset of the DR2 sample.
The downloadable documented product is desi-sl-vac-v1.fits. Its fields include target identifiers, survey and program labels, sky-pixel identifiers, redshift, and redshift error. Do not interpret the approximately 1,800 figure as the row count of the downloadable DR1 file; it describes the broader program, while the file has release-limited scope.
Use the catalog to test whether the foreground and background components have physically different distances and to prioritize systems for modeling. Preserve the redshift error and target identity, and consult the catalog data model before joining records to imaging objects.
Morphology and training resources
Galaxy Zoo DESI
Galaxy Zoo DESI provides model-generated morphology measurements for 8.67 million galaxies from Legacy Imaging Surveys data. The portal reports that model predictions typically reproduce volunteer answer fractions within 5–10% for each answer and provides friendly and advanced catalog versions, cross-match services, code, and model weights.
The prepared model images are not bundled in that release. The portal directs users to the Legacy Survey cutout service for original images. This distinction matters when reproducing a classifier: a morphology probability is a compact data product, while the image used to produce it may need to be fetched separately and tied to the same survey release.
Galaxy Zoo Euclid and Cosmic Dawn
Galaxy Zoo Euclid Q1 publishes morphology measurements, volunteer-view images, physical properties from Euclid MER catalogs, and learned image representations. Galaxy Zoo: Cosmic Dawn classifications cover more than 41,000 galaxies across 6 square degrees of Euclid Deep Field North. That program uses HSC imaging reaching apparent magnitude 21.5 in HSC-i and photometric redshifts to about 2.5 where available.

Its release reports 51 new gravitational lenses in that defined field and supplies classifications, model predictions, images, and subject metadata. The sample is valuable for training, cross-checking, and selecting follow-up targets, but six square degrees is much smaller than a wide-area discovery survey. Treat its discoveries and labels as a focused resource, not as an estimate of the total lens population.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the Euclid candidate release actually tells you
In March 2025, the European Space Agency described a first catalog of 500 galaxy-galaxy strong-lens candidates in its Euclid Q1 announcement. The discovery workflow combined AI screening, citizen-science inspection, expert vetting, and modeling. The release covered a selected area and was explicitly a candidate catalog, not a complete Euclid survey catalog.
ESA reported that about 2,000 square degrees had been observed by 19 March 2025, out of a planned 14,000-square-degree survey area. It projected approximately 7,000 candidates in a major data release planned for the end of 2026 and around 100,000 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses by mission end. Those are dated forecasts, not guaranteed delivered counts; do not use them as present catalog totals.
The announcement illustrates why a useful dataset often combines automated screening with human and expert review. AI can rank a huge image volume, volunteers can identify visual structure, and experts can reject artifacts or model plausible lenses. Each stage still has its own selection effects, so retain the stage and status of every object.

Step 1: Define the target population
Specify whether you seek galaxy-galaxy lenses, quasar lenses, cluster-scale systems, or a statistical weak-lensing signal. Define acceptable source brightness, lens redshift range, angular separation, and whether a candidate list or confirmed sample is required.

Step 2: Select an imaging release
Choose the release whose footprint, bands, resolution, depth, and access model match the target. Record the release date and documentation URL. Do not combine catalogs from different releases until identifiers, calibrations, and selection rules have been reconciled.

Step 3: Apply quality controls before machine learning
Remove or flag masked pixels, severe artifacts, missing bands, poor seeing, and edge regions. Include depth and coverage features in the training data so the model does not mistake survey quality for lens morphology.
Step 4: Generate candidates from images and catalogs
Use catalog positions and photometry to organize the search, then analyze cutouts or full-resolution pixels for arcs, rings, and multiple images. Keep a record of non-detections and rejected artifacts; a training set made only of visually appealing objects cannot measure selection effects.
Step 5: Add labels with provenance
Join morphology measurements, volunteer classifications, simulated lenses, and previous candidate lists only after separating their label types. Store the original probability, vote fraction, grade, or model version rather than reducing every source to a binary “lens” flag.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 6: Cross-match redshifts and follow-up
Match candidates to spectroscopic observations where available. When only photometric estimates exist, carry their uncertainties into the ranking and modeling. For high-priority objects, seek additional imaging or spectroscopy appropriate to the scientific question.
Step 7: Validate performance honestly
Measure completeness and contamination on a test sample whose construction is documented. A published candidate count is not a benchmark of one algorithm against another: for example, the 2021 DESI announcement reported 1,210 new strong-lens candidates from a machine-learning analysis of Legacy Imaging Surveys DR8, approximately doubling the known set at that time. That is a historical result for that search and release, not a current total or a cross-survey comparison.
Choosing among the resources
| Your priority | Start with | Add | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find rare candidates over a large area | Legacy Surveys imaging and catalogs | Morphology models and cutout inspection | Area supplies opportunities; image review tests whether structure is real |
| Confirm lens/source distance ordering | Imaging plus DESI spectroscopy | Target-level data-model checks | Redshifts provide a stronger physical test than morphology alone |
| Train a morphology classifier | Galaxy Zoo labels and images | Simulated examples and held-out expert review | Labels need provenance and coverage of both positives and negatives |
| Study Euclid-era candidate selection | Galaxy Zoo Euclid or Cosmic Dawn resources | Euclid candidate-release metadata | Useful for understanding AI, volunteer, and expert-vetting stages |
| Estimate a population or selection function | A wide imaging sample with masks and depth maps | Redshifts and a defined confirmation sample | Area alone cannot establish completeness or purity |
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Using area as a proxy for quality: compare depth, seeing, bands, masks, and overlap as well as square degrees.
- Calling every flagged object confirmed: retain the word “candidate” until the cited source establishes confirmation.
- Counting a program description as a file size: distinguish the broader approximately 1,800-system DESI program from the release-limited DR1 catalog.
- Ignoring release drift: the Legacy Surveys homepage lists DR11 while detailed properties cited here come from DR10 documentation; use the release actually downloaded.
- Training only on obvious arcs: include artifacts, blends, non-lenses, and difficult low-signal examples, with the mask and quality metadata.
- Joining on sky position alone: verify object identifiers, coordinate epochs or conventions where relevant, and the component to which each redshift belongs.
- Mixing strong and weak lensing: choose image morphology and validation data for individual strong systems rather than relying on statistical shape-catalog requirements.
A practical pre-download checklist
- Is the release version and geographic footprint explicit?
- Are image depth, seeing or point-spread function, pixel scale, and band coverage documented?
- Are masks, weights, artifact flags, and coverage variation available?
- Can you retrieve reproducible cutouts or raw images?
- Do catalog rows have stable identifiers and links to pixels?
- Are redshifts labeled as spectroscopic or photometric, with errors and target identity?
- Does every training or validation label include its source, version, and confidence?
- Can the dataset be cited and queried at the scale your project requires?
A strong choice is therefore usually a combination rather than a single “best” survey: broad imaging for discovery, documented morphology resources for ranking and training, and spectroscopy or other follow-up for physical validation. The published counts—1,210 DESI DR8 candidates in 2021 and 500 Euclid Q1 candidates announced in March 2025—must always be reported with their release, sample definition, and date.
