A stealth game can also be an immersive sim: the terms describe different things. Stealth names a way of playing; “immersive sim” usually describes a design approach built around interacting systems, consistent rules and multiple player-directed solutions. Sneaking is not enough by itself. The key question is whether the game lets players understand its world, combine its tools and improvise through obstacles in more than one plausible way.

Stealth and immersive sim describe different dimensions

Stealth describes a play style: the player tries to avoid detection, manage exposure or get past a threat without confronting it directly. An immersive sim is better understood as a design tradition. It emphasizes a cohesive place with rules and systems that interact, giving the player room to decide how to approach an obstacle. Those descriptions can overlap without being interchangeable.

A game may make stealth its central loop without offering much systemic freedom. If every guarded area has one intended route and the mechanics mainly support repeating that route, stealth is present, but that fact alone does not establish immersive-sim design. Conversely, an immersive sim need not make stealth the main activity. It may allow stealth alongside combat, role-playing elements or other approaches, with the balance varying from game to game.

There is no universally binding checklist that settles the label. Harvey Smith, co-creative director on Dishonored at Arkane Studios, described the kind of game the studio aimed to create as “a blend of genres” that is immersive and first-person, has resource economies and a “cohesive, plausible sense of place,” and offers “variable approaches and outcomes” presented consistently, often through simulation, so players can plan encounters. That is a useful design description, not an official standard for every game.

What to look for beyond sneaking

The most useful distinction is not the number of stealth mechanics a game contains. Look at how its systems and spaces work together, and whether they let the player make meaningful choices. These are comparison axes, not a formal scorecard: no single feature automatically qualifies a game.

Design question Evidence to look for What it helps distinguish
Can an obstacle be approached in different plausible ways? The player can evade, distract, manipulate, fight or otherwise respond, and the layout supports alternatives. A wider play space from one organized solely around a prescribed stealth route.
Do systems interact? Mechanics combine to create tactics beyond a single scripted sequence. Systemic problem-solving from a collection of isolated stealth features.
Are the rules consistent enough to plan around? The world behaves coherently enough for observation to inform a decision. A plausible, learnable environment from one that relies mainly on arbitrary exceptions.
Can the player improvise? Spaces and mechanics support experimentation and solutions the player devises. Player-directed action from simply executing the one route the design presents.
What role does stealth play? Consider whether stealth is the entire organizing loop or one option among interacting approaches. A stealth-centered game from an immersive sim in which stealth is one possible way to proceed.

Why systemic interaction matters

Stealth depends on reading a situation: where a threat is, what might expose the player and which actions seem safe. Immersive-sim design extends that kind of observation into a broader relationship between the player and the world. The point is not simply that several mechanics exist. It is that the rules are sufficiently coherent for the player to form a plan and then act on it.

When systems interact, a challenge can become a problem to solve rather than a sequence to memorize. A player might consider evasion, distraction, manipulation or direct confrontation, depending on what the game makes possible. The design does not have to support every imaginable tactic; it does need to make its available rules and options meaningful. A tactic that emerges from combining systems can feel like the player’s own solution rather than a button press the game specifically demanded.

Consistency is important for the same reason. If a world presents itself as a cohesive, plausible place, players can use what they observe to make predictions. If a mechanic changes behavior unpredictably without communicating why, planning becomes harder. This does not require a literal simulation of everything in the world. It means the important rules should hold together well enough that experimentation teaches the player something useful.

How to tell whether a game supports improvisation

Arkane’s GDC description of its Dishonored design principles says the studio sought “spaces that enable the player to improvise and experiment, devising their own solutions to gameplay obstacles.” That statement points to both halves of the design: systems give the player possible actions, while spaces give those actions somewhere to matter. A broad toolset in a tightly prescribed space may not create much freedom; an open-looking space with no meaningful interaction may not either.

As a player, you can assess this by paying attention to what happens when you test the apparent rules. Does observation help you make a choice? Can you change plans when circumstances shift? Do multiple approaches seem supported by the layout and mechanics, or does the game repeatedly push you back toward one intended sequence? These questions do not require the player to avoid combat or to discover an exotic trick. They ask whether the game accommodates decisions rather than merely allowing a single stealth routine.

Improvisation does not mean every solution must be equally safe, effective or narratively equivalent. A game may make some choices costly or produce different outcomes. What matters is that the player has room to choose and that the game presents those choices in a way consistent with its rules. Smith’s description explicitly connects variable approaches and outcomes with consistent presentation and the player’s ability to formulate and execute plans.

How the examples illustrate the overlap

Thief: a stealth-centered comparison

Thief is useful as a stealth-centered comparison and as part of the historical lineage discussed in accounts of immersive sims. Its role in this distinction is not to prove that every game with strong stealth belongs to the same design category. Instead, it helps clarify the question: stealth mechanics matter, but the wider environment and its systems must also support systemic improvisation for the immersive-sim description to fit.

Deus Ex: stealth alongside other approaches

Deus Ex is a useful example of player-directed solutions and of stealth coexisting with other approaches. Reducing it to stealth alone would miss the relevant point: the immersive-sim comparison concerns how the player can pursue obstacles, not just whether one of those options is quiet movement.

Dishonored and Dishonored 2: an explicit overlap

Dishonored makes the overlap especially clear. Arkane’s GDC material places Dishonored 2 in the immersive-sim family and discusses stealth and combat as approaches. The example shows why “stealth game” and “immersive sim” need not be competing labels: stealth can be a major way to play within a design that also supports other approaches and experimentation.

Prey: systemic design need not center on stealth

Prey is another useful comparison for Arkane’s interest in improvisation and simulation. In this example, stealth is not necessarily the sole organizing play style. That helps separate the design tradition from any one genre loop: an immersive sim can invite systemic problem-solving without making sneaking the primary identity of the game.

These examples clarify different parts of the distinction; they should not be treated as mechanically identical or as proof that every player, critic or developer draws the genre boundary in precisely the same place.

A practical way to describe a borderline game

If you are deciding how to describe a game, explain the evidence rather than treating the label as a pass-or-fail verdict. Start with what the player is mainly doing, then say how much freedom the design gives them to act on the world. That makes the distinction useful even when people disagree over terminology.

  1. Name the central play style. Is the game organized mainly around stealth, or is sneaking one option among several?
  2. Identify the available approaches. Look for more than one plausible way to deal with obstacles, rather than counting isolated mechanics.
  3. Check whether the systems interact. Ask whether actions and tools can combine into tactics, not just whether the game has a long list of features.
  4. Test the consistency of the rules. Can the player observe the world, learn how it responds and use that knowledge to plan?
  5. Look for room to experiment. Do the spaces and mechanics allow the player to devise a solution, or mostly execute a prescribed route?
  6. Describe the result with a qualification if needed. A game can be stealth-focused and still show immersive-sim traits; it need not fit a rigid, universal category.

This method avoids two common mistakes: assuming that every stealth game is an immersive sim, and assuming that a game cannot be both. The label is most informative when it points to observable design qualities—system interaction, consistent rules, alternative approaches and player improvisation—rather than serving as a synonym for a particular setting or genre blend.

Why the boundary stays open to interpretation

“Immersive sim” is a design tradition described in different ways, not a standards-body category with a definitive threshold. Smith’s account and Arkane’s GDC material are valuable because they explain design goals: coherent places, variable approaches, consistent outcomes and spaces for experimentation. They do not establish a universal test that every game must pass.

That is why a careful description is often better than a categorical claim. Say what role stealth plays, which alternative approaches the game supports, and whether the systems let players plan and improvise. With those details, readers can understand the design even if they would draw the genre line differently.
