A Soulslike is usually defined by a connected set of design ideas: deliberate combat that rewards timing and observation, death that carries a cost or lesson, and demanding bosses that often stand between the player and further progress. Exploration and character builds add depth. High difficulty alone does not make a game a Soulslike, and no formal industry rulebook decides every borderline case.
What defines a Soulslike?
The term describes a family of games influenced by the conventions of FromSoftware’s Souls series. It is better understood as a cluster of recurring mechanics than as a checklist every game must satisfy. Bandai Namco’s explainer describes Souls combat as focused on precise timing and evasion, while its series discussion connects that combat to bosses, exploration, and progression systems (Bandai Namco Europe’s overview; its discussion of the Souls series and Elden Ring).
Difficulty is part of the reputation, but it is not a sufficient definition. A game may be hard because enemies hit hard or resources are scarce; the Soulslike feel comes more specifically from how combat, death, checkpoints, exploration, bosses, and character choices work together.

How does combat work?
Soulslike combat commonly asks you to watch an opponent, recognize an attack, and choose a response: evade, block, parry, reposition, or attack during an opening. Committing to an attack can leave you exposed, so timing and positioning matter as much as pressing the attack button quickly. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring explainer describes reading enemies and using a well-timed dodge or parry; its series discussion likewise emphasizes precise timing and evasion.

This makes a failed exchange informative. If an enemy catches you during a slow attack, or a dodge comes too early, you can adjust your timing or approach on the next attempt. Different weapons and equipment can also change how you handle an encounter. In a 2011 interview, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki said the team wanted to give players options, including choosing the sword that “fits best in the hand” (PlayStation.Blog interview).
What happens when you die?
Death in many Soulslikes is more than a reset: it is a chance to learn, and it may put a resource at risk. In the Dark Souls design discussed by Bandai Namco, players can lose the enemy-earned currency used for stat upgrades if they fail to survive between checkpoints. The exact rules vary by game, so it is not safe to assume that every Soulslike uses the same currency, recovery window, or penalty.

Miyazaki summarized the intended retry loop in that 2011 interview: “You try something, die, learn from your mistakes, and eventually overcome those mistakes.” That describes a design intention for Dark Souls, not a guarantee that every game using the Soulslike label handles failure identically.

Why are Soulslike bosses so demanding?
Bosses often test whether you have learned the game’s combat language: recognizing attack patterns, managing distance, and taking advantage of openings without becoming reckless. They can also act as progression gates, meaning a player may need to improve their combat fluency or adapt their equipment and approach before continuing. Bandai Namco describes bosses in these terms in its series discussion.

The challenge is not simply that a boss has a large health bar. The encounter asks you to observe what it does and respond consistently. A failed attempt can reveal a pattern or show that a particular approach is not working; progress depends on applying what you learn.
How do exploration and progression fit the formula?
Exploration rewards attention
Souls games commonly make exploration part of the challenge. Hidden paths and useful items reward players who look beyond the obvious route. The series is not uniformly open, however: earlier Souls games are described as more linear yet interconnected, while Elden Ring expands the structure into a broad open world.

Builds let players adapt
Character stats, weapons, gear, skills, and other tools can shape how you approach a fight. These choices do not remove the need to learn an enemy, but they give players different ways to meet a challenge. Miyazaki’s comments about weapon choice reflect this emphasis on finding an approach that suits the player; the range of options differs from game to game.

In a more linear game, routes and bosses may strongly shape the order in which you advance. In Elden Ring, the open world gives players more freedom to choose the order of many challenges. FromSoftware’s interview about the game discusses that freedom and its progression design (PlayStation.Blog interview). A Soulslike can preserve familiar combat and death conventions while changing how much freedom the player has to explore or postpone a difficult encounter.

How to tell whether a game feels Soulslike
There is no official scoring system, but these questions help distinguish the genre’s familiar conventions from difficulty alone:
- Combat: Does success depend on reading opponents, timing evasion or attacks, and managing commitment?
- Death: Does failure teach you something, risk a resource, or both? What can be recovered, if anything?
- Checkpoints: Where are they placed, and how demanding is the retry after a defeat?
- Bosses: Do major encounters test learned skills or block progress?
- World structure: Are paths interconnected and mostly linear, or can you choose among challenges in a larger world?
- Build options: Can weapons, stats, equipment, or abilities change your strategy?
A game need not match every point to invite the comparison. The most useful question is whether several of these systems reinforce one another: exploration leads into danger, combat rewards careful decisions, death encourages learning, and progression asks you to use that learning.
