A PC game can be difficult on a handheld for reasons that have little to do with raw graphics power. The device may not sustain the required performance within its portable CPU, GPU, cooling and battery limits; the game may assume a mouse, keyboard or large monitor; menus and text may be too small to use comfortably; or a launcher, middleware, anti-cheat system or operating-system dependency may not work on that handheld.
That means “runs” and “plays well” are different outcomes. A title can start but require control remapping, touch input, lower settings or awkward launcher navigation. Conversely, a demanding-looking game may be comfortable if its software, controls and interface were designed or adapted for the target device.
What “difficult to run” means on a handheld
Handheld compatibility has several levels. Separating them prevents you from treating every problem as a frame-rate problem.
Does not launch or function
A game can be currently nonfunctional because of a platform, Proton, driver or middleware dependency. Valve’s Steam Deck classification calls this Unsupported. Its documentation notes that Proton or specific hardware incompatibility can be responsible. A graphics upgrade or storage card cannot fix a title blocked at this level.

(Engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speed. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. Reader sold separately.)
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance. (A1 performance is 1500 read IOPS, 500 write IOPS. Based on internal testing. Results may vary based on host device, app type, and other factors.)
Runs, but needs setup
A game may work after you choose a community control layout, open the on-screen keyboard manually, use the touchscreen for a launcher or adjust a setting. Valve uses these kinds of compromises as examples of its Playable category. The game is usable, but not necessarily ready for a first-time player.
Runs with compromises
A title may launch and remain playable only with reduced graphics settings, a lower resolution or a frame-rate target that is acceptable on one device but not another. Compatibility ratings do not establish how every scene performs, so demanding areas, large battles and later updates still matter.
Runs but is uncomfortable
Tiny subtitles, dense menus, incorrect button prompts, pointer-heavy interfaces or frequent keyboard entry can make a technically functional game frustrating. This is a usability failure rather than a hardware failure, but it is just as important when choosing what to play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance inside a portable power and cooling envelope
A handheld combines the processor, graphics hardware, cooling system, battery and display in a compact enclosure. It therefore cannot be assumed to reproduce a desktop’s performance at the same settings and resolution. Sustained performance depends on the exact model, its power profile, firmware, game build and the scene being rendered.
For Steam Deck, Valve’s compatibility review uses a default performance criterion of 30 frames per second at 800p. This is a Steam Deck approval requirement, not a universal definition of smoothness, a benchmark for every game scene or a standard for every handheld. Valve also evaluates controls, display behavior and software compatibility separately. See the official Steam Deck Verified criteria for the current scope.

When comparing reports, record the conditions rather than copying a single FPS number. A useful comparison identifies:
- the exact handheld model and operating system;
- the game version and graphics API, if relevant;
- resolution, upscaling mode and individual quality settings;
- the device’s power or performance profile; and
- whether the result was sustained during demanding gameplay rather than observed in a menu or opening area.
The available official criteria do not provide a cross-handheld benchmark, a universal minimum frame rate for player satisfaction or a reliable average battery figure. Avoid treating an isolated result as a ranking of all handhelds.

Steam Deck uses SteamOS. Games without native Linux builds generally run through Proton, Valve’s Windows-compatibility layer. The game is only as usable as every component it loads: Valve explicitly says that the game and all of its middleware must be supported by Proton, including anti-cheat, in its Verified guidance.
This creates failure points that raw GPU capability cannot overcome. An anti-cheat module may not support the target environment; an embedded browser or video component may fail; a launcher may depend on Windows-only behavior; or a game update may change compatibility. A title can therefore be light enough for the hardware yet unavailable because one required service does not function.
Do not generalize this into “all anti-cheat fails on Linux.” Support varies by game, anti-cheat configuration and platform. A Windows-based handheld has a different software stack and may avoid a particular Proton issue, while introducing its own driver, launcher or background-service requirements. Check the exact device and current game status.

Controls designed for a desk, not a handheld
PC games often assume a full keyboard, a high-precision mouse and many simultaneous inputs. A handheld has physical controls, a touchscreen and, on some models, trackpads or rear buttons. Mapping those inputs can work well, but it is not automatic for every game.
Valve’s Deck checks ask whether the built-in controls can reach all game content, whether prompts match the active input method and whether the player can enter text with a controller or an on-screen keyboard. A title that requires an occasional name, chat message or console command may be playable only after you invoke the keyboard manually.
Mouse-heavy interfaces are a frequent source of friction. Strategy games, simulation tools, inventory grids and launchers may depend on hovering, right-clicking, drag selection or tiny pointer targets. A trackpad or touchscreen can make these tasks possible, but precision and speed may still be worse than on a desk. Valve treats such situations as something to evaluate, not automatic proof that a game cannot work.
Input symptoms to look for
- Button prompts remain on keyboard keys after a controller is connected.
- A menu requires a cursor and offers no focusable controller navigation.
- Important actions need more simultaneous keys than the handheld exposes comfortably.
- Text fields do not open the on-screen keyboard or accept controller input.
- A launcher, login screen or agreement page can be dismissed only with a mouse.
If these symptoms occur, try the game’s native controller preset first, then a community layout or a custom mapping. Keep a touchscreen or pointer assignment for the specific screen that needs it rather than replacing every control.
Resolution, interface scale and legibility
A small display magnifies interface mistakes. Valve lists 1280×800 and 1280×720 as supported Steam Deck resolutions and requires good default settings and readable text for approval. Its detailed checklist specifies a smallest font character height of at least 9 pixels at 1280×800 and recommends aiming for 12 pixels. Those are Valve’s Steam Deck review specifications, not a rule for every handheld display.

Games can remain difficult even when their 3D rendering is fast. Fixed desktop layouts may put status panels at the edges, subtitles may be too small at the native resolution, and menus may use dense lists intended for a monitor. A game with scalable UI, subtitle-size controls and a legible default layout is usually easier to use than one with higher graphical fidelity but no interface scaling.
Check the interface before committing to a long session
- Open the title or its settings at the handheld’s native resolution.
- Read a representative subtitle, tooltip and inventory description from normal viewing distance.
- Navigate the deepest menu using only the built-in controls.
- Look for text-size, HUD-scale and subtitle options; confirm that changes apply outside the settings screen.
- Check that cutscenes, tutorials and prompts use the same readable scale.
Launchers, sign-ins and interruptions
A separate launcher can turn a compatible game into an awkward one. It may expect a mouse, require a keyboard for a password, show a compatibility warning or lose controller focus after returning to the game. Valve’s Verified criteria say launchers should be navigable with a controller and that the title should not display compatibility warnings. Its Playable examples allow cases where touch navigation is needed.
When diagnosing a launcher problem, distinguish a one-time setup task from a recurring blocker. If touch input lets you sign in once and the launcher stays out of the way thereafter, the game may be tolerable. If every start requires pointer clicks, a virtual keyboard and a warning dismissal, the practical experience is substantially worse even though the executable works.
Storage is a separate constraint
Insufficient free space can prevent installation or an update, but it does not make a game graphically demanding. Valve documents microSD expansion for Steam Deck as additional game storage. A card can solve an installation-space problem; it cannot increase frame rate, enlarge text, remap controls, repair Proton support or make anti-cheat compatible.

How compatibility labels should be read
Labels are device- and program-specific snapshots, not permanent guarantees. Valve’s Steam Deck program uses four categories:
| Steam Deck category | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Verified | Works well out of the box under Valve’s criteria, including performance, controls, display and software checks. |
| Playable | Works, but may require manual tweaking such as a control layout, touch navigation or an on-screen keyboard. |
| Unsupported | Currently nonfunctional on Steam Deck. |
| Unknown | Not yet reviewed by the program. |
Xbox’s handheld compatibility program uses different categories: Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported and Not tested. These labels should not be equated with Valve’s categories because the programs cover different devices and criteria.
Status can change after game patches, middleware updates, operating-system changes, drivers or device firmware improvements. Valve describes Deck reviews as ongoing, and a previously unsupported game can become usable. Check the current game page and the details for your exact handheld before relying on an old label.

A practical comparison framework
Use the same questions for every game and device. This prevents a high desktop system requirement from overshadowing a control or software blocker.
| Axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Device and OS | Exact handheld model, operating system and compatibility layer. Steam Deck’s Proton considerations do not automatically apply to another handheld. |
| Performance | Resolution, graphics settings and credible sustained behavior during demanding portions; do not compare numbers recorded under different conditions. |
| Display and interface | Supported resolution, subtitle and menu readability, scalable text and legibility at normal handheld viewing distance. |
| Input | Whether every feature is reachable with built-in controls, prompts match and pointer or keyboard tasks have a workable method. |
| Software compatibility | Current status of the game, launcher, middleware and anti-cheat on the target operating system. |
| Rating scope and date | Which program assessed it, which device is covered and when the status was last updated. |
Diagnose a game that runs badly or refuses to work
- Identify the failure precisely. Record whether the game does not launch, crashes after a launcher, has low or unstable performance, lacks input prompts or is simply unreadable.
- Confirm the platform. Write down the handheld model, operating system, game distribution version and current game update. Do not apply a Steam Deck solution automatically to a Windows handheld, or vice versa.
- Check the current compatibility status. Look for the device-specific label and its date. An old status may predate a game, Proton, driver or firmware update.
- Separate setup from capability. Test the built-in controls, on-screen keyboard and touchscreen launcher navigation. If one-time setup resolves the issue, document that workaround; if a required component still fails, treat it as a software incompatibility.
- Set a repeatable performance target. Use a stated resolution and settings profile, then observe demanding gameplay rather than menus. Lowering settings can address performance, but it will not fix missing controller navigation or failed anti-cheat.
- Inspect readability. Increase UI or subtitle size where the game allows it. If important text remains too small at normal distance, classify the experience as a usability problem even when frame rate is acceptable.
- Check storage last as its own branch. If installation or updating fails, verify free space and consider microSD expansion. Resume performance and compatibility testing only after the game is installed correctly.
Questions to ask before buying or installing
- Is the rating for my exact handheld, not merely for the PC version?
- Does the rating cover the current game build and its launcher or anti-cheat component?
- Can I reach every menu and gameplay action with the controls I intend to use?
- Are subtitles, tutorials and inventory text readable without sitting unusually close to the screen?
- Am I comparing performance at the same resolution, settings and power profile?
- Is the problem actually storage capacity rather than performance or compatibility?
The most reliable expectation is therefore specific rather than absolute: name the handheld, operating system, game version, resolution, controls and current compatibility status. A PC game is difficult on a handheld when any one of those layers becomes a blocker or demands compromises that outweigh the convenience of portable play.
