An interactive installation earns its place when it helps visitors interpret a subject, make something, experiment, explore a collection, or look more closely—and when people with different access needs can take part. Six documented examples show how that can work, from a multisensory ocean projection to motion-responsive interpretation behind artworks. They also show why “interactive” need not mean a touchscreen, and why visitor feedback matters more than spectacle alone.
How to judge whether an installation earns its space
There is no meaningful cross-museum ranking in the available evidence: these projects serve different purposes, and published comparisons of installation budgets, operating costs, maintenance, staffing, or floor area are not available. A useful assessment instead asks what visitors can do, how the activity connects to the collection or subject, what access choices it offers, and what the museum has learned from visitors.
- Purpose: Does the interaction interpret, invite making, support experimentation, aid collection discovery, or encourage close looking?
- Connection: Does it lead visitors toward the artwork or subject, or compete with it for attention?
- Participation: Can visitors engage through touch, movement, projection, screens, sound, or facilitated activity?
- Access: Were people with different needs consulted or included in testing? Are controls, text, seating, sensory options, and quieter routes considered?
- Evidence: Is there documented visitor feedback or evaluation, and what does it actually measure?
- Spatial role: Does the installation create a place to gather, explore, rest, or focus?
Six installations with a clear visitor purpose
Musée National de la Marine: a multisensory ocean “wave”
At the Paris museum, a projected ocean is designed to tell a maritime story through more than sight. The Museums Association reports that the wave combines an 8-metre-tall, 20-metre-long projection with sound, rumbling vibration, an oil-spillage smell, and touch objects. Its sensory approach gives visitors several ways into the subject rather than treating a large image as the whole experience. The museum reopened in November 2023 after a €72.2 million revamp; that figure is for the overall renovation, not the wave installation. (Museums Association, 2025)

Access measures are part of the visitor route, not an afterthought. People with varying sight, hearing, and intellectual needs tested design ideas in workshops. Elsewhere, mediation tables offer touch objects, audio descriptions, French Sign Language translation, easy-to-read text, and braille. The wave can be slowed during toned-down sessions, and visitors can use a calm room. These options recognize that a multisensory experience can be engaging for some visitors and intense for others.

Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery: engineering through play
The National Railway Museum in York opened Wonderlab in 2023 for children aged 7–14. The Museums Association describes 18 interactive exhibits, with reported testing by more than 1,200 people. At Magnetic Liquid, visitors feel shapes formed by magnetic particles; Feel the Force and the Big Machine use physical challenges, including ramps, pulleys, steps, and conveyor belts moving fluorescent balls. The activities make engineering principles available through doing, observing, and trying again rather than requiring a prescribed route. The exhibit count and testing figure are reported in the Museums Association’s 2025 feature, not independent measures of learning impact. (Museums Association, 2025)
The gallery pairs open exploration with different levels of challenge and practical access provisions: acoustic timber treatment, quieter puzzle areas, subtitled video, accessible work heights and knee recesses, and seating with transfer space. The source reports 1,200 millimetres of clear width beside certain seats. That detail describes those seating locations, not necessarily every route or exhibit in the gallery.

MoMA Material Lab: a tactile place to make
Material Lab, a family art-making space that opened at MoMA on February 16, 2011, offers a different relationship to art than a gallery where visitors are asked not to touch collection objects. Its premise is that hands-on making can be a legitimate form of engagement in an art museum. The museum’s Community and Access Programs coordinator Kirsten Schroeder wrote that tactile learning can be especially important for visitors with disabilities. (MoMA, 2012)
The design included wheelchair-accessible art tables, touchscreens responsive to limited dexterity, and magnification for participants with low vision. Visitor feedback also prompted changes, including an adjustable screen arm. That response is a useful reminder that access features benefit from observation and revision after opening, not just planning at the design stage.

Cooper Hewitt: moving from collection browsing to design
Cooper Hewitt’s Immersion Room let visitors browse digitized wallpaper designs, project a pattern at full scale, sketch their own designs, and adjust colors and repeats. The interaction linked looking at collection material with trying a design idea. The museum states that the room was on view from December 12, 2014, through February 19, 2024; it is a documented former installation, not evidence of a current visitor offer. Its Process Lab likewise used hands-on and digital activities to explore design as problem solving. (Cooper Hewitt, page accessed 2026)
The same retrospective describes collection-browser tables that supported simultaneous exploration by as many as six visitors at the largest tables. This is a different spatial role from a focused projection room: browsing tables can support shared discovery, while the Immersion Room made one collection attribute—pattern—available for full-scale experimentation.

Cleveland Museum of Art ArtLens Gallery: technology that redirects attention to art
ArtLens Gallery’s Exhibition component used motion-detecting projections behind artworks. Visitors first approached and looked at the artwork; their movement then activated a projection designed to prompt closer attention to composition, gesture, expression, purpose, and symbols. The intended sequence matters: the technology was positioned to send visitors back to the object with more specific things to notice, rather than substitute a screen for looking.
In an April 2017 account, Cleveland Museum of Art chief information officer Jane Alexander said four years of visitor interviews, usage tracking, and evaluation of gallery components informed ArtLens. That is evidence of a design process shaped by visitor behavior, but the account describes the museum’s own project and intended benefits, not an independent impact evaluation. (Cleveland Museum of Art, 2017)

Dallas Museum of Art’s speechless: sensory choice and flexible gathering
The Dallas Museum of Art exhibition speechless used multisensory, multimodal engagement and included non-text-based interpretation. Its spatial design made room not only for activities but also for different levels of stimulation: a quieter de-escalation space had comfortable rocking chairs and optional weighted lap blankets or noise-cancelling headphones, alongside a flexible gathering area. These provisions show how a visitor experience can include rest and choice as well as interaction.
The American Alliance of Museums reports an evaluation built around a 17-question survey completed by 235 adult visitors, followed by telephone interviews with eight respondents. In that study, 82 percent of surveyed visitors gave the exhibition a positive rating. The account also reports positive responses from 80 percent of respondents who said they had a child with a disability and 73 percent of respondents who reported having a disability themselves. The subgroup sizes are not stated in the account, so those percentages should be read as responses within this particular study, not as a benchmark for museum visitors generally. The exhibition closed early during the pandemic and did not travel to the High Museum. The account also identifies staff training and ongoing communication as operational needs. (American Alliance of Museums, 2023)

These cases make the term “interactive” broader than a screen-based encounter. Visitors may feel magnetic particles, operate a physical machine, create a pattern, browse a collection with others, trigger a projection by approaching an artwork, or choose between sensory engagement and a quieter space. The medium works best when it fits the visitor purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAccess also appears in different forms: consultation and testing, tactile and sensory routes, accessible work heights, captions, adaptable controls, seating, and quiet options. No single feature makes an installation accessible to everyone; the examples show a range of design choices, not a universal checklist or proof that every visitor can use every element.
Finally, evidence varies. Some projects report design consultation, tracking, visitor feedback, or survey responses; those are useful signals, but they are not interchangeable measures of learning, inclusion, or long-term value. The published figures here cannot establish that one installation is more effective, cheaper, easier to maintain, or more space-efficient than another.
