A Linux terminal emulator provides the text-based interface; a shell interprets the commands you enter through it. They often appear together because a terminal application commonly starts a shell, but they are separate programs with different jobs. Bash is a shell, not a terminal emulator.

Terminal emulator vs. shell: the difference

A terminal emulator presents and manages a terminal-like interface. It displays text, sends your keystrokes to a program, and handles terminal behavior that programs use, such as control sequences for cursor movement and color. GNOME describes terminal emulators as software that emulates a video terminal and gives interactive access to command-line applications (GNOME Terminal documentation).

A shell is a program that reads and interprets commands. GNU describes Bash as both a command interpreter and a programming language. Its responsibilities include parsing shell syntax, expanding variables, handling pipelines and redirection, running built-in commands, and supporting scripts, functions, and control flow (GNU Bash Reference Manual). In short, when you type command-a | command-b, it is the shell that understands the pipeline syntax and coordinates the commands—not the terminal emulator.

Think of the terminal emulator as the interaction surface and the shell as the command-language interpreter. The analogy is not perfect: the emulator does more than draw a window, because running programs may rely on its terminal behavior and capabilities. It is responsible for presenting a terminal-like environment through which command-line programs can interact, not for deciding what shell syntax means.

What happens when you open a terminal?

A desktop terminal application usually launches a shell, which is why people often treat the two as one thing. GNOME Terminal describes itself as an application for accessing a UNIX shell environment, and its documentation covers settings for custom commands and shells (GNOME Terminal documentation). The xterm manual likewise documents an optional shell program and how xterm chooses one when none is specified (xterm manual).

  1. The emulator starts a program. In a typical interactive session, that program is your configured shell. The terminal application and shell are separate, even though opening the first often starts the second automatically.
  2. You type a command. The emulator sends your keystrokes to the program running in the terminal, usually the shell. The prompt you see is a readiness cue from the shell.
  3. The shell interprets the command. It applies its syntax rules, handles any built-ins, and launches other programs when needed. Shell features such as variable expansion, quoting, pipelines, and redirection belong to the shell’s language.
  4. Output comes back through the terminal interface. The emulator displays text and responds to terminal control sequences used by the shell or other programs. A program may send sequences to move the cursor or change text color, rather than simply printing ordinary words.

This is a useful way to locate the responsibility for what you see. The shell decides what to do with a command; the terminal emulator provides the channel and display through which you interact with it. Other programs launched by the shell can also use that same channel, so not every line shown in the window is necessarily produced by the shell itself.

Historically, a terminal was a device for sending keystrokes and displaying received text, while a shell coordinated command execution. Canonical’s Ubuntu documentation explains this relationship and its development (Ubuntu command-line overview). Modern terminal emulators reproduce the relevant interaction in software. The term “emulator” reflects that role: the application imitates terminal behavior that command-line programs expect.

Is Bash a terminal?

No. Bash is a shell: it interprets commands and provides shell-language features. GNOME Terminal, xterm, and similar applications are terminal emulators. If you type a Bash command in GNOME Terminal, the emulator is providing the interface and Bash is interpreting the command.

That distinction also explains why a command can behave differently after changing shells even when you keep the same terminal window. A shell defines its own command-language behavior and interactive features. A terminal emulator does not turn Bash syntax into Zsh or fish syntax; it hosts whichever program is configured to run in it.

Bash is common, but it is not the only Linux shell. Users may instead choose shells such as Zsh or fish, and distribution or user settings can determine which shell starts by default. Canonical notes that Bash is likely to be present on a modern Linux system, not that it is universal (Ubuntu command-line overview). It is therefore better to identify the shell actually in use than to assume every terminal opens Bash.

Can a shell run without a terminal emulator?

Yes. A shell can run non-interactively, for example by reading commands from a script file or a supplied string. In that case, there may be no visible terminal window or interactive prompt. The Bash manual documents both interactive and non-interactive use (GNU Bash Reference Manual). This is why scripts can use shell behavior without a person opening a desktop terminal and typing each command.

The reverse distinction matters too: a terminal emulator does not have to run a shell. It can host another command-line program, and a terminal interface can provide access to programs on a remote machine—for example, through SSH—rather than only local programs (GNOME Terminal documentation). So “terminal” does not automatically mean “local Bash session.” The terminal is the interface; the program it connects you to, and the machine where that program runs, are separate questions.

Related terms: command line, prompt, and terminal capabilities

  • Command line or CLI: A text-based way to interact with programs. A shell prompt is a familiar command-line interface, but CLI is not the name of a particular shell or terminal application (GNOME Terminal documentation; Ubuntu command-line overview).
  • Prompt: The visible cue that a shell is ready for input. It is provided by the shell, not by the terminal emulator (GNOME Terminal documentation). The terminal displays the prompt, but it does not decide that the shell is ready or interpret the next command.
  • Terminal capabilities: The behaviors and control sequences available to programs running through a terminal, including cursor positioning and color. GNOME documents escape sequences for these functions, while xterm documents its VT emulations and TERM settings (GNOME Terminal documentation; xterm manual). Those behaviors matter because programs may rely on terminal control features to present output correctly.

It helps not to use “terminal,” “shell,” and “command line” as interchangeable names. The terminal emulator is the software providing terminal-like interaction; the shell is one program that can use that interaction to interpret commands; and command line or CLI describes a text-based way of interacting with programs. In everyday speech, people may call the whole window a terminal, but that shorthand can obscure which component is responsible for a behavior.

What changes when you switch terminal emulators or shells?

Switching terminal emulators

Changing from one terminal emulator to another changes the interface and may change supported terminal behavior; it does not, by itself, change the shell’s command syntax. When choosing an emulator, relevant differences include workflow features such as tabs, profiles, appearance, and text handling, as well as terminal emulation and compatibility with control sequences. GNOME documents interface and text-handling features, while xterm documents its emulation and capability behavior (GNOME Terminal documentation; xterm manual).

These are useful comparison axes, not a universal ranking. Someone who wants multiple sessions or a particular appearance may care about tabs and profiles. Someone running a command-line program that uses terminal controls may care more about emulation and capability compatibility. In either case, selecting a different interface application is not the same as selecting a different command interpreter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Terminal behavior can become noticeable when an application draws a screen, positions a cursor, or uses colors. GNOME documents escape sequences for cursor position and color, and xterm documents multiple VT emulations and TERM settings. That does not mean every display issue is necessarily caused by the emulator, but it is one area to consider when a program’s terminal behavior is unexpected. Avoid assuming that a terminal emulator is merely a blank window: its terminal behavior is part of the environment programs use.

Switching shells

Changing shells changes the command interpreter and can affect syntax, interactive behavior, and whether existing scripts or configuration files work as expected. Bash, Zsh, and fish are not different terminal windows; they are different shell programs. Consider compatibility with your scripts and configuration alongside the interactive features you want, rather than expecting a terminal-app change to replace the shell.

The distinction is particularly useful when you are deciding what to change. If you want tabs, profiles, different appearance, or different text handling, you are looking at terminal-emulator features. If you want different command-language compatibility or interactive shell behavior, you are looking at a shell. Existing scripts and shell configuration are relevant to a shell change because those files are tied to shell behavior; changing the terminal application alone does not rewrite them.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why the distinction matters

Knowing which component is responsible makes troubleshooting more precise. If quoting, variable expansion, pipelines, aliases, or a script behaves differently than expected, look first at the shell and its configuration. If text display, cursor behavior, colors, or a program’s terminal compatibility is the problem, the emulator’s terminal behavior may be relevant. For remote work, also identify which machine is running the shell: a terminal window can carry interaction to a remote command-line environment, so the displayed window does not prove that commands are running locally.

A good practical question is: “Is this about interpreting a command, or about presenting terminal output?” Command meaning and shell-language features point toward the shell. The visible terminal interface and how programs use terminal control behavior point toward the emulator. When a session feels like one unified application, remember that it is usually several programs cooperating, rather than one program doing all of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a terminal run the shell?

A desktop terminal emulator commonly starts a shell, which is why they appear together. They remain separate programs: the emulator provides the terminal-like interface, while the shell interprets commands. A terminal can also host another command-line program.

Is the command prompt part of the terminal emulator?

The shell provides the prompt as a cue that it is ready to accept input. The terminal emulator displays that text and provides the interface through which you respond.

Can I change my terminal without changing my shell?

Yes. Switching terminal emulators changes the interface and may change terminal behavior or workflow features, but it does not by itself change the shell or its command syntax. You can configure a terminal application to start a chosen shell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a terminal emulator connect to a remote computer?

Yes. A terminal interface can provide access to programs on a remote machine, for example through SSH. The fact that output appears in a local terminal window does not mean the shell or command is running locally.

Can a shell work without a terminal window?

Yes. A shell can run non-interactively by reading commands from a script file or a supplied string, so it need not have a visible terminal window or interactive prompt.

Why might colors or cursor movement differ between terminal emulators?

Terminal emulators can differ in terminal emulation and supported capabilities. Programs may use terminal control sequences for behavior such as changing colors or positioning the cursor, so compatibility can matter.

The Bottom Line

A terminal emulator presents and emulates the terminal interface; a shell such as Bash interprets commands within it. They commonly work together, but you can change one without automatically changing the other—and a shell or terminal session may also be used without the familiar desktop-window setup.
