A readable phone interface depends on more than its font family. Text needs a suitable rendered size, clear letterforms and stroke weight, enough contrast and spacing, and a layout that can accommodate larger text without clipping or forcing awkward scrolling. No single font size or typeface guarantees readability on every screen; the best check is how the complete interface looks and behaves at the sizes people actually use.
Readability comes from the whole text system
A typeface can look clear in a font menu and become difficult to read when it is small, low-contrast, tightly spaced, or squeezed into a rigid layout. Conversely, a well-chosen face cannot compensate for text that disappears into its background or gets cut off when someone enlarges it. Treat font selection as one part of interface design, alongside size, weight, contrast, spacing, and responsive behavior.
There is no universal mobile font-size number in the guidance cited here that makes every font readable for every reader. Screens differ, typefaces have different apparent sizes and stroke weights, and people read in different viewing conditions. Platform recommendations are useful starting points, not proof that a particular setting will work in every interface.

When choosing between candidate fonts, compare them in the same interface at the same rendered size. Look at whether important letters are easy to tell apart, whether the font appears too small or too light, whether it supports the languages and scripts your interface needs, and how it fits and wraps in the available space. These are practical evaluation criteria, not a published ranking of font families. The cited official guidance does not establish that serif or sans-serif fonts are inherently more readable on phones.

Choose a size by inspecting the rendered text
Apple’s general UI design tips say, “Text should be at least 11 points so it’s legible at a typical viewing distance without zooming.” This is an Apple design recommendation, not a universal readability guarantee or a WCAG minimum font size. A font’s apparent size varies, so inspect the actual text in its interface rather than relying on the number alone. Apple Developer’s UI Design Dos and Don’ts was reviewed on October 13, 2026; the page does not show a publication date.
Give priority to the text people need to understand or act on: body copy, navigation, instructions, labels, and error messages. Check those at the size and weight they will have in the finished interface. A number that seems adequate in a design file is not enough if the rendered letters look cramped, faint, or difficult to distinguish at a typical viewing distance.
Do not confuse the point-size thresholds in WCAG’s contrast guidance with a general minimum text size. WCAG uses them to decide which contrast threshold applies. Its definition of large text is at least 18 pt regular or 14 pt bold; that classification does not prescribe a mobile font size or say that text at those sizes will automatically be comfortable to read. Make foreground and background contrast strong enough
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text. For this criterion, large means at least 18 pt regular or 14 pt bold. These are text-to-background contrast requirements; they do not judge the font family or define the right size for a phone. W3C’s explanatory guidance was reviewed on October 13, 2026.
Contrast is about the difference between the text and the background, not just whether their hues look different. If two colors are similar in brightness, the lettering may be hard to make out even when one is blue and the other is red. Check the actual text-background pairing, including the colors used for smaller or lighter-weight text. The cited WCAG guidance sets the ratio thresholds; it does not identify a universally readable color palette.

These ratios have a narrower purpose than a complete legibility assessment. Passing a contrast threshold does not confirm that the letterforms, size, spacing, or layout will suit your readers.

Provide room between letters and lines
Spacing can make a text block easier to follow, but it should not be treated as a fixed decoration that the layout must preserve at all costs. Apple points to line height and letter spacing as ways to improve legibility. Apple’s UI design tips also advise fitting primary content to the screen without horizontal scrolling.

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 tests whether content and functionality remain available when a reader overrides text spacing. The test values are a line height of at least 1.5 times the font size, paragraph spacing of at least 2 times the font size, letter spacing of at least 0.12 times the font size, and word spacing of at least 0.16 times the font size. These are resilience-test values, not instructions to use those amounts as the default on every page. W3C states: “Content is not required to use these text spacing values.” W3C’s explanation of Success Criterion 1.4.12 was reviewed on October 13, 2026.
The practical question is whether the content still works when spacing grows. A label should not overlap an icon; paragraphs should not run into neighboring elements; and a button should not conceal its text. If a spacing change causes those failures, the layout needs to adapt rather than prevent the reader from changing the text.

Let text enlarge, wrap, and fit the screen
People should be able to use their device’s larger-text settings without losing content or functionality. Android recommends defining text sizes in scale-independent pixels (sp), rather than density-independent pixels (dp), pixels (px), or other units. Its guidance also calls for layouts that expand with enlarged copy instead of cropping it. Google Android Accessibility’s text-scaling guidance was reviewed on October 13, 2026.
A layout designed around a single fixed text size may look tidy at its default setting but fail when a reader enlarges the copy. Make room for lines to wrap and for text-containing controls or containers to grow. Check that navigation, buttons, labels, and other interface elements still show their complete text, and that enlargement does not make required actions unreachable.
Apple’s guidance is to fit primary content to the screen without horizontal scrolling. That does not mean every kind of content can never scroll horizontally; it means readers should not have to pan sideways just to read primary interface content. Apple Developer’s UI design tips provide that platform recommendation. When larger text changes line breaks or the amount of content on screen, inspect the result rather than assuming a compact default layout will still work.

Test on a phone-sized interface with larger text
A review at the default setting alone misses the behavior that matters most to readers who enlarge text. Android’s accessibility guidance recommends raising the device’s accessibility font setting to its largest value and checking content in both portrait and landscape. That is official test advice, not a report of testing any particular device or font. Google’s Android text-scaling page was reviewed on October 13, 2026.
- Inspect the ordinary view. Review actual text in its intended interface, at its rendered size and weight. Check that the letters are distinct and that important content does not look faint or cramped.
- Check text-background contrast. Compare the pairing against the applicable WCAG 2.2 contrast threshold: 4.5:1 for ordinary text or 3:1 for large text as defined by the criterion.
- Increase accessibility text size to its largest setting. Look for clipped copy, overlapping elements, missing labels, or controls that no longer expose their text.
- Check portrait and landscape. Confirm that text still wraps and fits as the available screen shape changes; note whether primary content requires horizontal scrolling.
- Test spacing overrides. Check that the page remains usable when line height, paragraph spacing, letter spacing, and word spacing are increased to the WCAG 1.4.12 test values.
- Compare font candidates fairly. If you are choosing a typeface, show each candidate in the same interface at the same size and weight. Evaluate the letterforms and fit separately from contrast and resizing behavior.
This sequence turns “looks readable” into a more useful review: it checks the text people encounter, as well as whether their device settings can change it without breaking the interface.
Consider line length and alignment in context
Long lines can make it harder to track where you are in a block of text. WCAG’s Level AAA visual-presentation criterion describes a mechanism for users to set blocks no wider than 80 characters or glyphs, or 40 for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) text; it also includes non-justified text and line spacing of at least 1.5 times the font size. The criterion addresses text that can be presented without loss of content or functionality at 200 percent resize. W3C’s explanation of Success Criterion 1.4.8 was reviewed on October 13, 2026.
