A good Commander precon is one a new player can understand, wants to play repeatedly, and can bring to a group whose games suit it. There is no officially ranked “best beginner deck”: the right choice depends on whether you already know Magic, which themes appeal to you, and how much complexity your table expects. If you specifically want to learn multiplayer Commander, a ready-to-play deck can remove the deck-building barrier; if you have never played Magic, basic instruction first may make those Commander games easier to follow.

What makes a precon a good first Commander deck?

A precon is a preconstructed deck: instead of choosing and acquiring 100 cards yourself, you start with a complete list built around a commander. That convenience matters, but it does not automatically make every precon easy to learn. Commander still asks you to learn a large set of cards and interactions, plus rules that differ from other ways to play Magic.

For a first deck, look for three things together: a plan you can explain, a theme you enjoy, and a level of rules and decision-making that feels manageable at your table. A deck that you find interesting is more likely to hold your attention through the repeated games that teach you its cards. A deck whose plan is legible helps you understand why a card is in it and what you might do next.

“Good” is therefore a fit judgment, not a universal ranking. Wizards of the Coast’s official materials describe the Starter Commander Decks as ready to play, but do not score their complexity or say which is easiest for beginners. Treat product labels and colors as starting clues, then compare actual decklists and talk with the people you expect to play with.

Know what Commander asks of a new player

Under the Official Commander Website’s rules page, a Commander deck has exactly 100 cards including its commander, is singleton apart from basic lands, and must follow the commander’s color identity. Players begin at 40 life. Commander is commonly played with multiple people, so a new player is not only learning cards and turn structure but also how decisions affect a multiplayer game.

A precon takes the construction task off your plate, but the rules and card-reading work remain. The commander is a useful anchor: it is visible, identifies the deck’s colors, and often signals the strategy the deck is designed to pursue. Still, one card cannot explain every interaction among the other cards. Expect to consult the card text and rules summary, and to ask questions during early games.

Format rules and banned cards may change. For a time-sensitive legality question, check the current official rules rather than assuming an older deck or guide reflects every current rule.

Compare candidate decks with a practical checklist

If you have several decks to choose from, compare them on the factors below. No single factor proves that a deck is beginner-friendly; the value is in spotting where a particular choice will make learning easier or harder for you.

What to compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Plan clarity Can you describe what the deck is trying to do after reading its strategy insert or a short guide? A recognizable plan gives you a way to interpret card choices and make decisions.
Theme and mechanics Do you like the theme, and do the repeated mechanics make sense to you? Interest encourages repeated play; familiar patterns can make a deck easier to follow.
Rules load Does the list ask you to track many abilities, tokens, counters, or interactions at once? Several new things to monitor can compete for attention while you are learning the turn structure.
Mana comfort How many colors must you manage, and does the mana base support the spells in the list? More colors can broaden card options while adding another part of the game to keep track of.
Group fit What pace and expectations does your group have, and are players willing to teach? A deck is more enjoyable when the table is a comfortable place to learn and its games feel compatible.
Included aids and availability What learning materials come in the box, and can you find the product locally? Aids can help you start without assembling separate materials; stock varies by product and retailer.

For rules load and plan clarity, inspect a current decklist rather than guessing from a name, illustration, or color pairing. The product listing for the Starter Commander Decks does not compare their difficulty. It would be misleading to label one the simplest without evidence about its actual cards and how a particular player handles them.

Use color count as a clue, not a verdict

Wizards’ The Basics of Mana, published July 6, 2015, explains a real tradeoff: adding colors can widen the cards available to a deck, but makes it more likely that a player will lack the right color of mana for a spell. This makes color count useful to consider when learning, especially if you are still getting comfortable with lands and paying costs.

That guidance is general Magic advice, not an evaluation of current Commander precons. The same article says there are no hard-and-fast rules for mana bases; the right curve depends on the available cards, strategy, and likely opponents. So do not assume every two-color deck is easy or every three-color deck is too difficult. A player who loves a theme may be happier learning a more involved mana base than piloting a simpler deck they do not enjoy.

Starter Commander Decks are a concrete ready-to-play option

Wizards Play Network lists five Starter Commander Decks released December 2, 2022. Each is presented as a ready-to-play 100-card deck: one foil-etched legendary commander and 99 nonfoil cards, including lands. The box contents also include 10 double-sided tokens, a deck box, punchout counters, a strategy insert, a summary of Commander rules, and a reference card for the turn structure.

Deck Colors listed by Wizards Play Network
First Flight White-blue
Grave Danger Blue-black
Chaos Incarnate Black-red
Draconic Destruction Red-green
Token Triumph Green-white

These names and color pairs make it possible to choose a theme that catches your interest, and the included references offer practical help when starting out. They do not establish which deck is easiest, strongest, or best for a particular playgroup. The 2022 listing also does not establish current prices or present-day retailer inventory, so check availability where you plan to buy rather than assuming every release is still on shelves.

Decide whether you are new to Magic, Commander, or both

“New to Commander” and “new to Magic” are different starting points. Someone who already knows how turns, spells, and combat work may be ready to learn Commander-specific rules by playing with a group. A player who has never played may benefit from learning basic Magic first, so the 100-card multiplayer format does not introduce every idea at once.

Wizards’ product guide separates those jobs: it describes the Starter Kit as best for “Learning how to play” and Commander Decks as best for “Epic multiplayer games.” The guide also says availability is while supplies last. This is not a rule that beginners must buy a particular product first; it is a useful way to think about the choice. If your aim is to learn the basic game, begin with basic instruction. If you already know the basics, want multiplayer Commander, and have people to play with, a ready-to-play Commander deck is a practical on-ramp.

Match the deck to the people and games around you

Commander is not only a deck-selection problem. Wizards’ 2016 introduction to the format says, “Commander is designed to promote social games of Magic,” and discusses communicating expectations before play. Ask your prospective group what kind of games it enjoys, how quickly people tend to play, and whether someone can help explain unfamiliar rules. That short conversation can reveal whether the deck and the learning environment are a good fit.

A new player may need time to read cards, ask what an ability means, or reconsider a play. A group that welcomes those questions makes it easier to learn than a table that expects every player to know the format already. The deck that works well in one group may feel mismatched in another; choose with the actual people you will play with in mind, not an abstract idea of the strongest beginner option.

A simple way to choose and start playing

  1. Identify your starting point. Decide whether you know basic Magic already or need an introduction before trying multiplayer Commander.
  2. Find a group before choosing a deck. Ask what kind of games it plays and whether a more experienced player can help with first-game questions.
  3. Shortlist themes you genuinely like. For Starter Commander Decks, use the listed names and colors to find candidates that appeal to you; do not treat color count as a difficulty score.
  4. Read the strategy help and decklist. See whether you can state the deck’s plan and recognize what its cards are intended to support. Look for mechanics or game objects you would find hard to track all at once.
  5. Check what comes in the box and what is available. Confirm the product listing and local stock before making a purchase; availability and price are not established by the 2022 product description.
  6. Use the included reference material during your first games. Keep the rules summary and turn reference handy, and ask your group to clarify unfamiliar situations as they arise.

After playing, note which cards or decisions were confusing and which parts of the deck you enjoyed. That gives you a better basis for future choices than trying to predict a perfect first deck from its name alone. You do not need to modify or upgrade a precon before you have played it; first learn what the deck does and whether you enjoy its plan.

What the available evidence does—and does not—tell you

The official materials establish the Commander rules, the contents and names of the five Starter Commander Decks, general mana considerations, and the distinction between a learning product and a multiplayer product. They do not publish comparative complexity ratings, beginner-outcome statistics, or a measured ranking of the five decks. Nor do the cited product materials establish current stock, current prices, relative power, or which deck a particular local group will enjoy most.

That means the most reliable choice is based on fit: a theme you want to play, a plan you can follow, a group that is willing to teach, and a rules load you are comfortable taking on. Simplicity is not the same as weakness, and no player has to choose the fewest colors if a different deck is the one they are excited to learn.
