A boomer shooter feels fast when movement, spaces, enemies, and weapons let you make clear decisions without breaking combat’s rhythm. High run speed helps, but it is only one part of the sensation. If routes are unreadable, enemies look alike, or shots produce weak feedback, a faster character can make the game feel confused rather than exhilarating.
The most useful way to understand speed is as a relationship between agency and information: you need meaningful ways to reposition, enough spatial knowledge to choose a route, and immediate feedback that confirms what your weapon did. Developer commentary on DOOM, DICE’s gunplay work, and LawBreakers all point to that same systems-level explanation.
Speed is a decision-making experience, not a movement stat
Players often describe a shooter as “fast” when several things happen in a short interval: they move through space, identify a threat, select a weapon, fire, read the result, and choose the next position. The sensation comes from completing that loop without long pauses or uncertainty.

DOOM game director Marty Stratton and co-director Hugo Martin described this structure as “combat chess.” Stratton summarized the focus as: “And that came back to the most fundamental design things: bad-ass demons with tons of personality, great guns, and fast movement – push-forward combat – that created [what we call] ‘combat chess.’” Distinctive enemies and weapons give each decision a recognizable meaning, while movement keeps the player actively solving the encounter.

That is why raw velocity is a poor standalone explanation. A player moving quickly through a featureless arena has few useful choices. A player moving at a moderate pace through a legible space can feel constantly active because every strafe, jump, retreat, and weapon swap changes the tactical situation.
Movement: preserve agency and momentum
Useful movement creates options
Fast movement matters when it lets you do something specific: close distance, break a line of fire, attack from another angle, reach a pickup, pass through an encounter, or take a higher route. The question is not “How many meters per second does the character travel?” but “How many meaningful actions can the player perform while the fight is still unfolding?”
The DOOM (2016) discussion of pace highlights movement speed, verticality, double jumping, bounce pads, and map flow. These mechanics matter because they connect locomotion to decisions. A double jump can expose a new firing angle or reach a platform; a bounce pad can turn a defensive escape into a deliberate route through the arena. The mechanic feels fast when the player understands what the movement will accomplish.
Momentum should not remove control
Momentum gives movement a sense of continuity, but excessive drift can make aiming and route selection feel accidental. Responsive acceleration, predictable air control, and clear landing behavior help players treat speed as agency rather than as a camera ride. The evidence does not establish one ideal acceleration curve; it shows that movement has to remain readable in the context of weapons and spaces.
Verticality is valuable only when it is legible
Multiple elevations create more than visual spectacle. They allow a player to leave a dangerous floor, attack over cover, or choose between a direct route and a safer flank. However, vertical combat adds information the player must parse quickly: where the threat is, which surfaces are reachable, and whether a jump creates a real advantage.

Both DOOM and LawBreakers use vertical design as part of high-speed play. In LawBreakers, low gravity, character abilities, weapons, and vertical maps were designed together. The developers also had to encourage players to use the vertical dimension instead of treating it as decoration. A high ceiling is not automatically good high-speed design; it needs routes and combat reasons that players can recognize.
Level design: turn speed into readable routes and ranges
Design encounters around useful angles
DICE gameplay commentary links gunplay to the spatiality and rhythm of a game. Levels are tuned around combat angles, engagement ranges, and flow because those variables determine whether a weapon’s role can be expressed. A close-range weapon needs opportunities to close distance; a precision weapon needs sight lines that are long enough to reward aim but not so open that every encounter becomes a single dominant lane.
In a fast arena, ask four questions for every major space:
- What reason does the player have to move instead of standing still?
- Can the next useful route be identified while under fire?
- Does the space support more than one combat angle?
- Do its distances allow the weapon roster to matter?
These are evaluation questions, not universal measurements. The available design commentary does not establish a required room size, corridor width, loop count, or elevation ratio.
Use rhythm between encounters
Speed is also shaped by contrast. A brief traversal, pickup decision, or visual reset can make the next fight feel more intense without making the entire game exhausting. Conversely, long stretches with no decision can make a theoretically fast character feel slow. The important unit is the rhythm of movement, contact, repositioning, and resolution.

Make routes readable at combat speed
Players need to recognize cover, jump surfaces, exits, hazards, and enemy locations without stopping to study the scene. Distinct silhouettes, strong landmarks, and consistent traversal rules help. If every platform looks interchangeable, verticality becomes visual noise. If every doorway is equally plausible, speed turns route selection into guesswork.
Weapon feedback: make every action immediate and distinct
Input response is the first layer
A fast weapon begins with a short, predictable path from button press to visible action. DICE’s gunplay commentary states the goal directly: “It should be responsive and deliver immediate feedback when you press fire.” Any delay between input and muzzle response makes movement feel disconnected from combat, even when the player character is quick.
Responsiveness is not merely a low latency number. It includes whether recoil, animation, reticle behavior, and projectile or hitscan timing agree with the player’s expectation. A shot that fires immediately but produces an ambiguous result still feels weak.
Feedback has several coordinated channels
A convincing shot can communicate through weapon motion, animation, sound, muzzle effects, projectile trails, enemy reactions, hit effects, and damage feedback. DICE describes weapon motion as a way to communicate weight and punch, with audio that is nuanced while remaining punchy and aggressive. The DOOM commentary likewise credits animation, graphics, character rigging, and gameplay feedback with selling each weapon’s power.
These channels should reinforce one another rather than compete. The player should be able to tell that a shot occurred, whether it connected, and what kind of result it produced while still moving and tracking another threat.

Distinct roles reduce cognitive load
Distinctive weapons let players make faster choices. A weapon’s silhouette, firing rhythm, sound, range, and effect should communicate its role. If two guns behave identically, switching between them adds input without adding a decision. If each gun solves a different problem, the arsenal becomes part of the combat puzzle.
Distinct enemies are equally important. Stratton said that, because of DOOM’s speed, “all of the information needed to solve these “combat puzzles” had to be quickly digestible and understood by players.” A readable enemy roster means the player can recognize a threat, select an appropriate tool, and act before the encounter loses momentum.
Readability is what keeps high speed from becoming confusion
Fast combat compresses the time available for interpretation. Every visual and audio signal therefore has a job. Enemy silhouettes should remain distinguishable during motion; attacks should have recognizable tells; pickups should be easy to identify; and the environment should separate traversable surfaces from decoration.
Stratton’s description of introducing combat tools over time is an important pacing lesson. The player does not need the entire system at once. New weapons, enemies, and movement options can be introduced so that each addition is learned before the next layer raises the information load.
Readability also applies to failure. When a player misses, takes damage, or chooses the wrong route, the game should provide enough feedback to support a better next attempt. A fast shooter feels fair when mistakes are attributable to a decision rather than to an unreadable visual event.

Why speed changes ripple through the whole game
Increasing speed is not an isolated tuning change. LawBreakers lead designer Dan Nanni described player requests for greater speed and faster projectiles as the beginning of a much larger adjustment. “As a developer, you know the waterfall of repercussions that can come from such a blanket statement – role rebalance from scratch, animations redone, sounds redone, map size changes, game mode changes.”
This is a multiplayer case study, not a rule that every single-player shooter must follow. It does show the dependencies clearly:
- Roles: faster targets can weaken weapons or abilities built around predictable movement.
- Animation: locomotion, recoil, and enemy attacks may need new timing and anticipation.
- Audio: sounds must remain separable when events happen closer together.
- Maps: traversal time and sight-line dominance change as players cross spaces faster.
- Modes: objectives, respawns, and round pacing may no longer fit the original scale.
In a single-player game, the same principle applies to encounter scripting, enemy placement, checkpoint spacing, and pickup timing. A speed increase that feels exciting in an empty test room may undermine the campaign once all systems interact.

When comparing two games or evaluating a prototype, score the experience by questions rather than by a single speed setting. The following framework synthesizes the developer commentary; it is not a published scoring standard.
| Axis | What to examine | Signs of a strong result |
|---|---|---|
| Movement agency | Ways to reposition, evade, traverse, and change elevation | Movement regularly creates a useful tactical option |
| Spatial readability | Routes, threats, sight lines, cover, and engagement distances | The player can choose a next position without stopping to decode the room |
| Weapon distinction | Roles, range bands, firing rhythms, and enemy matchups | Weapon choice changes how an encounter is solved |
| Feedback latency and clarity | Input response, animation, audio, hit confirmation, and target reaction | The player immediately knows what happened and can act on it |
| System coherence | Whether movement, maps, enemies, and weapons support one another | No single feature overwhelms the rest of the combat language |
How to apply the framework during playtesting
- Record the decision loop. Note how often the player moves for a reason, identifies a threat, chooses a weapon, and receives confirmation. Long pauses or repeated uncertainty indicate a readability problem, not necessarily a speed problem.
- Test the same encounter at different movement speeds. If a small increase makes the space unreadable, revise routes, enemy silhouettes, or engagement ranges before raising speed again.
- Mute one feedback channel at a time. Temporarily reduce weapon audio, hit effects, or animation emphasis. This reveals which signals are carrying confirmation and which are redundant.
- Track route choice, not just completion time. A faster clear is not automatically better. Look for whether players discover multiple useful angles and understand why a route worked.
- Check the whole roster. Test every weapon against every major enemy behavior at the distances the level actually creates. A weapon that feels excellent in isolation may become irrelevant in the real flow.
Common mistakes that make a fast shooter feel slow
- Raising run speed without changing spaces: Players reach boundaries too quickly, overshoot targets, or lose sight of threats.
- Adding verticality without landmarks: The arena becomes a stack of confusing surfaces instead of a set of tactical routes.
- Making every weapon equally loud: Spectacle increases, but role and hit confirmation become harder to read.
- Using identical enemy silhouettes: Players spend their limited reaction time identifying models instead of making combat decisions.
- Delaying hit confirmation: The player cannot tell whether to continue firing, switch weapons, or reposition.
- Introducing too many tools at once: The combat puzzle exceeds the player’s ability to digest it at speed.
What DOOM demonstrates—and what it does not prove
DOOM (2016) is a useful playable example because developer interviews explicitly connect its pace to movement speed, verticality, double jumping, bounce pads, map flow, weapons, pickups, and combat feedback. Marty Stratton also described the franchise’s pace in simple terms: “It’s a pace and a feel of the weapons.”
That example demonstrates a coherent design approach, not a universal formula. The available evidence is qualitative: it does not provide a measured percentage for how much movement, level design, or weapon feedback contributes to perceived speed. There is no defensible statistic that says one factor accounts for a fixed share of the feeling.
The bottom line on boomer-shooter speed
A boomer shooter feels fast when the player can move decisively, read the space, choose a distinct tool, and receive immediate confirmation—then do it again without losing the thread of the fight. Movement supplies agency, level design supplies understandable options, and weapon feedback supplies the information that makes each action satisfying. Remove any one of those links and higher speed is likely to produce noise instead of flow.
