For full local inference with Apple’s MLX runtime, use two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra and 512GB of unified memory each. Meta also documents a four-computer alternative using 256GB of unified memory per Mac. Both layouts require macOS 26.2 or later, direct Thunderbolt 5 links between every pair of Macs, and sufficient local storage for the complete NVFP4 checkpoint. A hosted API is the practical alternative if you do not want to purchase and operate a multi-Mac cluster.

The configurations Meta documents

Muse Spark Open is an 816-billion-parameter model with 42 billion active parameters and a 1-million-token context window, according to Meta AI Research’s October 15, 2026 announcement. Running the complete model locally is therefore a distributed-computing task rather than a normal single-workstation installation.

Option Hardware Best suited to Main trade-offs
Two-node layout 2 × Mac Studio, M5 Ultra, 512GB unified memory each The primary documented local setup Highest memory capacity per machine; requires a direct Thunderbolt 5 connection between the two Macs
Four-node layout 4 × Mac Studio, 256GB unified memory each Splitting the same workload across more machines More computers, six pairwise links, more power and administration
Hosted API No local Mac cluster; use a supported remote provider Access without buying or maintaining hardware Recurring provider charges and dependence on an external service

Both local designs provide 1,024GB of aggregate unified memory on paper. That does not mean a single Mac receives 1,024GB: MLX distributes the model across the individual nodes. The distinction matters when checking memory, storage and interconnect requirements.

Why Muse Spark Open needs multiple Macs

Total parameters versus active parameters

The model has 816B total parameters but 42B active parameters. “Active” describes the parameters used for a given token; it does not reduce the amount of model data that must be available when you load the complete checkpoint. The full-model deployment still has to place all required weights and runtime data across the cluster.

Unified memory is shared by the system

Apple silicon uses unified memory for both CPU and GPU work. The advertised 512GB or 256GB figure is the machine’s total pool, not memory reserved exclusively for model weights. The operating system, MLX runtime, communication buffers, tokenizer, cache and the growing key-value cache for long prompts also consume memory. Consequently, a configuration that meets Meta’s documented hardware recipe should still retain free space rather than treating every gigabyte as available for the checkpoint.

The one-million-token context window changes the sizing question

Muse Spark Open’s 1M-token context window is a model capability, not a promise that every prompt of that length will fit comfortably in every session. Longer conversations and documents increase runtime cache usage. If your workload routinely approaches the maximum context, monitor memory headroom and expect greater pressure than in a short-prompt test. The documented two- and four-node layouts are the starting point for full local inference; they are not a guarantee that arbitrary maximum-length workloads will have identical performance.

Choosing the two-Mac Studio layout

Hardware specification

Meta’s hardware documentation specifies two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra and 512GB of unified memory each. This is the simplest local topology and the configuration highlighted in Meta’s launch announcement as the first desktop-class deployment for this model using Apple’s MLX framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications list M5 Ultra configurations up to 512GB of unified memory, so the required per-node capacity is an available hardware configuration rather than a theoretical specification.

Interconnect

Connect the two Macs directly with a Thunderbolt 5 link. MLX uses distributed communication over RDMA on Thunderbolt 5, so this is not the same as placing both computers on an ordinary Ethernet or Wi-Fi network. Use a Thunderbolt 5 cable and connect the machines directly as required by Meta’s instructions.

When this layout is the better choice

  • You want the fewest nodes and the least complicated cluster administration.
  • You prefer 512GB of local unified memory on each machine for larger per-node allocations.
  • You can budget for two high-memory Mac Studios rather than four lower-memory units.
  • You want fewer direct links to inspect and fewer operating-system installations to keep aligned.

The cost advantage cannot be established from hardware capacity alone. Compare current purchase prices, storage, cables, power and your maintenance time against the recurring fee for a hosted service; no universal “cheaper” result follows without those figures and your expected usage.

Choosing the four-Mac Studio layout

Hardware specification

Meta documents an alternative of four Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra and 256GB of unified memory each. The aggregate advertised memory is the same 1,024GB as in the two-node plan, but it is divided among twice as many operating systems.

Pairwise Thunderbolt links

Meta requires a direct link between every pair of Macs. Four nodes therefore require six pairwise connections: Mac A–B, A–C, A–D, B–C, B–D and C–D. A single cable from one Mac to a switch or a daisy chain does not satisfy that stated topology unless Meta’s current documentation explicitly supports it.

When the four-node plan makes sense

  • You can obtain four 256GB machines more easily than two 512GB machines.
  • Your physical or purchasing constraints favor distributing the memory across more systems.
  • You accept additional cable management, software updates, diagnostics and power use.

More nodes increase the number of components that can be misconfigured. Every Mac must run a compatible software stack, have its checkpoint data available locally, and participate in the same distributed launch. The four-node plan is a documented option, not a plug-and-play upgrade over two nodes.

Can one M5 Ultra Mac Studio run Muse Spark Open?

One Mac Studio is not the documented full-model MLX configuration. Meta’s recipe uses either two 512GB nodes or four 256GB nodes. Do not interpret the 42B active-parameter figure as evidence that a single 512GB computer can load the entire 816B model: active parameters per token and total checkpoint requirements are different quantities.

A single Mac may be useful for preparing software, inspecting files or running a different, smaller model, but those possibilities do not establish single-node support for the complete Muse Spark Open checkpoint. If your requirement is the full model and local inference, plan for one of Meta’s multi-Mac layouts.

Requirements to verify before buying

  • Operating system: macOS 26.2 or later on every Mac.
  • Processor and memory: either two M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 512GB each or four M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 256GB each.
  • Interconnect: a direct Thunderbolt 5 link between every pair of Macs. Two nodes need one pairwise link; four need six.
  • Local storage: enough disk space on each machine for the full NVFP4 checkpoint and the files created during setup. The available material does not specify a checkpoint size, so check the current Meta cookbook and your downloaded file before committing to a drive capacity.
  • MLX software: install the current versions and distributed-inference procedure specified in Meta’s “Muse Spark Open on Mac” cookbook. Keep the MLX and operating-system versions aligned across nodes.
  • Physical setup: provide outlets, ventilation, desk or rack space and cable runs for every computer. Four nodes require twice as many Macs and six direct links.

How to prepare a local cluster

  1. Select the topology. Choose two 512GB nodes for the simpler deployment, or four 256GB nodes if spreading the memory and hardware fits your constraints.
  2. Standardize macOS. Update every Mac to macOS 26.2 or later. Record the exact version on each machine so an unnoticed mismatch does not complicate troubleshooting.
  3. Install the documented MLX workflow. Follow Meta’s current Mac cookbook for the supported package versions, checkpoint format and distributed launch procedure. Avoid substituting an unverified command or an older example because model and runtime interfaces can change.
  4. Build the direct Thunderbolt topology. For two Macs, connect the pair directly. For four, create all six pairwise connections specified by Meta. Label cables and ports so a later restart does not leave one link ambiguous.
  5. Prepare local storage. Download or copy the NVFP4 checkpoint to the locations expected by the cookbook on every participating machine. Confirm free space before starting the load; a successful download on one node does not prove that the other nodes are ready.
  6. Check node visibility. Use the verification steps in the current MLX documentation to confirm that every Mac can communicate over the intended Thunderbolt 5 RDMA path. Fix missing links before attempting inference.
  7. Launch a small validation prompt. Start with a short request to verify that the model loads, all nodes join and output is returned. This isolates topology and software problems before you add a very long document.
  8. Increase workload gradually. Test longer prompts while watching memory and storage. A one-million-token context is a maximum capability; it is not the right first test for a new cluster.

Memory and storage planning in practice

The arithmetic is straightforward: two nodes × 512GB equals 1,024GB of advertised unified memory, and four nodes × 256GB also equals 1,024GB. The usable amount is lower because macOS, MLX and inference state require memory. Distributed execution also needs communication buffers, so do not plan to fill each machine to its nominal limit.

Storage is a separate constraint. Unified memory is not disk space, and the checkpoint must be present on local storage in the arrangement expected by the MLX workflow. Because the supplied specifications do not state the NVFP4 file’s size, reserve capacity only after checking the current checkpoint download and allowing room for temporary files, future versions and logs.

The 1M-token context can add substantial cache data during a session. If a short test succeeds but a long prompt fails, that does not necessarily mean the model or interconnect is broken; it may indicate that the chosen context exceeds the remaining memory headroom.

Hosted API versus buying a cluster

A hosted API removes the need to purchase two or four Mac Studios, source six cables for the four-node topology, maintain several macOS installations and store the checkpoint locally. It is the practical choice when you need occasional access, do not require local data residency, or cannot dedicate space and power to a cluster.

Local inference is more attractive when you need control over data, predictable access without a provider’s queue or limits, or repeated high-volume use that justifies capital equipment. It also transfers responsibility to you for updates, hardware failures, storage and performance tuning.

There is no defensible universal answer to “which is cheaper?” without current hardware prices, API rates, expected hours of use, electricity and the value of administration time. Build a comparison using those inputs rather than assuming that the two-node layout or a hosted service is automatically the lower-cost option.

Troubleshooting the most common setup failures

The launcher sees only one Mac

Recheck that every required direct Thunderbolt 5 connection is present and that each node is running macOS 26.2 or later. On a four-node system, inspect all six pairwise paths rather than checking only the first Mac in the list.

One node reports insufficient storage

Verify free disk space on each machine, not just the coordinator. Confirm that the NVFP4 checkpoint is in the location and format expected by the current cookbook, and remove incomplete downloads before retrying.

The model loads but a long prompt fails

Begin with a shorter context and observe memory usage. The context cache grows with the prompt, and the nominal 1M-token capability does not guarantee that every node will have sufficient headroom for a maximum-length request alongside the runtime.

Results differ after an update

Record the macOS and MLX versions on all nodes. Reapply the same documented software versions across the cluster and consult the current Meta instructions before changing launch parameters.

You are considering a single-node workaround

Do not treat a custom workaround as equivalent to Meta’s supported full-model recipe. The documented MLX deployment is distributed across two or four Macs; use a hosted API or a different model if you cannot provide that topology.

Quick Recap

Decision checklist

  • Choose two M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 512GB each when you want Meta’s primary local layout and the fewest nodes.
  • Choose four M5 Ultra Mac Studios with 256GB each when distributing hardware is preferable and you can manage six direct links.
  • Choose a hosted API when avoiding capital hardware, local storage and cluster administration matters more than local control.
  • Do not plan on one Mac Studio for the complete model under the documented MLX instructions.
  • Before ordering, confirm macOS 26.2+, Thunderbolt 5 cabling, per-node checkpoint storage and sufficient memory headroom for your intended context lengths.
