Lunar faults are fractures or fractured zones where blocks of the Moon’s crust have moved relative to one another. Most of the clearest young examples are lobate thrust-fault scarps: curved, stair-step cliffs created when the Moon’s still-cooling interior contracts and pushes one crustal block up and over another. The Moon has narrowed by about 150 feet (50 meters) over the last several hundred million years, and evidence from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images and Apollo seismometers indicates that some of these faults may still be active.
What are lunar faults?
A lunar fault is the fracture, or zone of fractured rock, along which one block of the Moon’s crust has shifted relative to another. The break itself may be buried or only partly visible. What an astronaut or spacecraft camera sees is often the landform produced by that movement, such as a cliff, ridge or trough.
That distinction matters: a fault is the geological structure and displacement surface; a scarp is the visible step in the ground created by displacement. A lobate scarp, for example, is the surface expression of a relatively young, low-angle thrust fault. Calling the cliff itself “the fault” is convenient in casual speech but less precise.
Most young lunar faults are contractional. As the Moon loses internal heat, its interior volume decreases slightly. The brittle outer crust cannot shorten smoothly everywhere, so it breaks and one block is driven over its neighbor. The resulting relief is commonly a curved, asymmetric, stair-step escarpment. Older tectonic structures include broad wrinkle ridges in basaltic maria and extensional graben, which are shallow troughs formed when the crust is pulled apart.

How do faults form on the Moon?
The formation process links the Moon’s thermal history to the landforms visible today.
- The young Moon began hot. Heat came from accretion, large impacts and radioactive decay during and after formation. The interior has been cooling ever since.
- Cooling reduces interior volume. As partially molten or hot rock cools and solidifies, it occupies slightly less space. The whole Moon therefore undergoes gradual contraction rather than remaining exactly the same size.
- Compression builds in the brittle crust. Near the surface, rock is cold and strong enough to fracture. It cannot accommodate all of the shortening by smoothly folding, so compressive stress accumulates in discrete zones.
- A low-angle thrust fault develops. When the stress exceeds the strength of the crust, a fracture forms and one crustal block moves up and over the adjacent block. This is thrust faulting, a type of reverse faulting in which the main motion is compression.
- The fault produces a scarp. The upthrown block leaves a curved, lobate step or cliff. Erosion is extremely limited on the Moon, so the shape can remain sharp for a very long time, although later impacts gradually soften it.
- Tides modify the stress. Earth’s gravity raises solid-body tides in the Moon. The changing tidal stress does not provide all of the energy for contraction, but it can favor some fault orientations and help trigger slip on a fault that is already close to failure.
This mechanism differs from terrestrial plate tectonics. The Moon has no global network of moving oceanic and continental plates driving its present faults. Instead, its dominant young tectonic signal is the planet-wide response of a single cooling, contracting body, with tidal forces superimposed.
Is the Moon still shrinking?
Yes. NASA reported in 2019 that the Moon narrowed by about 150 feet (50 meters) over the last several hundred million years. That is a global change accumulated over an immense interval, not a yearly measurement that can be noticed directly. The contraction is small compared with the Moon’s 3,474-kilometer diameter, but brittle rock records it through fault scarps.
The shrinking does not mean the Moon is collapsing or changing its orbit. It means the solid body is slowly losing heat and accommodating a modest reduction in interior volume. The process is expected to continue while the interior cools, although the rate is not a single published value that applies to every fault or every epoch.
Contraction also explains why young scarps occur in both lunar highlands and maria. Their distribution is consistent with a global stress field rather than a process restricted to one volcanic basin. Earth’s tides add directionality, so the scarps are not randomly oriented even though contraction affects the entire Moon.

What is a lobate scarp?
A lobate scarp is a curved, rounded-fronted cliff produced when a low-angle thrust fault pushes one slice of crust over another. “Lobate” refers to the lobe-like plan view of many scarps; “scarp” describes the topographic step visible in images and elevation data.
Typical diagnostic features include:
- Asymmetric relief: one side is markedly steeper than the other because one block has been lifted.
- Curved, segmented traces: the scarp commonly follows an arc or a series of overlapping lobes rather than a perfectly straight line.
- Small-to-moderate height: many are tens of meters high, although dimensions vary.
- Fresh-looking morphology: sharp crests and limited crater degradation suggest relative youth compared with heavily softened surrounding terrain.
- Low-angle thrust geometry: the slip surface dips gently beneath the upthrown block, even though the surface expression can look like a steep cliff.
Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) high-resolution imaging expanded the inventory far beyond the areas photographed during Apollo. NASA reported more than 3,200 lobate thrust-fault scarps mapped globally in 2015. The count describes identified landforms, not a claim that every fracture on the Moon has been found or that every scarp has the same age or slip history.

The Lee-Lincoln scarp
The Lee-Lincoln scarp crosses Taurus-Littrow Valley at the Apollo 17 landing site. NASA describes it as approximately 80 meters high and as a relatively young, low-angle thrust fault. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt drove the lunar rover in a zig-zag route over it, giving the feature unusual ground-level documentation in addition to orbital images.
Its height should not be treated as a universal size for lunar faults. It is a named example that shows how a thrust fault can create substantial relief in an otherwise ancient landscape.
What causes moonquakes?
A moonquake occurs when stored elastic stress is released as seismic energy. Apollo seismometers operating from 1969 to 1977 recorded thousands of moonquakes. Analyses of the records identify shallow events near some young scarps, and the timing of certain events is consistent with changing tidal stresses.

The connection is physically straightforward: contraction and other stresses load a fault; Earth’s tides periodically alter the forces acting on it; if friction is overcome, the fault slips and the surrounding ground shakes. On the Moon, shaking can also destabilize loose regolith on slopes, potentially sending dust or small rocks downslope.

Seismic evidence supports geologically recent and likely continuing tectonic activity, but it does not assign every detected event to one named scarp with certainty. Event locations from the Apollo network were limited by the small number of stations, and interpretations depend on seismic models. “Shallow” indicates that the source is in the upper crust; it does not by itself provide an exact fault age or a universal slip rate.
Lunar tectonic landforms compared
Not every lunar ridge is a fault scarp. Stress regime, shape and setting help distinguish the principal landforms.
| Landform | Typical stress | Surface geometry | Common setting | How relative age is assessed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lobate scarp | Compression | Curved, asymmetric stair-step cliff | Highlands and maria | Crater degradation and cross-cutting relationships |
| Wrinkle ridge | Usually associated with compression, but structure is debated | Broad, sinuous ridge with multiple slopes | Mare basalt | Relationship to surrounding lava flows and crater degradation |
| Graben | Extension | Shallow trough bounded by faults | Volcanic and mare regions, including Mare Frigoris | Cross-cutting relationships and degradation of the trough margins |
Why wrinkle ridges need caution
Wrinkle ridges are broad rises in mare basalt. A USGS analysis of the Apollo 17 region discusses anticlines and thrust faults as possible explanations, but it also notes alternative interpretations. Their appearance alone is therefore insufficient to label every wrinkle ridge a confirmed thrust fault. Structural evidence and the local geological setting must be considered.
How scientists tell whether a fault is young or active
Crater degradation
Impact craters accumulate on the Moon over time. A scarp that cuts across crisp craters, or that retains a sharp crest while nearby terrain is heavily cratered, is relatively younger than the surface it disrupts. This method provides a relative sequence, not an exact calendar age for each feature.

Cross-cutting relationships
If one fault offsets another landform, the offsetting feature is younger than the feature it cuts. Conversely, a lava flow that buries a scarp must be younger than that scarp. Combining such relationships across a region helps reconstruct the order of tectonic and volcanic events.
Orbital imaging
LRO’s high-resolution camera provides the global coverage and detail needed to identify small scarps, inspect their morphology and compare their degradation. Apollo-era photographs covered only selected areas, so the modern inventory is much larger than the original sample.
Seismology
Apollo’s four-station seismic network independently demonstrates that the Moon experiences seismic events, including shallow ones. When an event’s location, depth and timing align with a nearby scarp and expected tidal stressing, the case for current activity strengthens. The limited station geometry means individual associations remain model-dependent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are lunar faults not randomly oriented?
Global contraction supplies the broad compressive force, but the orientation of a particular fault depends on the local stress field. Earth’s solid-body tides continually change the direction and magnitude of small additional stresses in the lunar crust. A fault is more likely to slip when the combined contractional and tidal stresses favor motion along its plane. This helps explain why the mapped scarps show preferred orientations instead of an entirely random pattern.

Local topography, buried structures and variations in crustal strength can rotate or concentrate stresses. What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
Three observations reinforce one another: the Moon is measurably contracting; LRO has mapped more than 3,200 young-looking lobate scarps; and Apollo seismometers recorded shallow moonquakes, including events associated in analyses with nearby scarps. Together they support the conclusion that lunar tectonics did not end billions of years ago and may still be occurring.
NASA quoted Thomas Watters, senior scientist at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, saying: “Our analysis gives the first evidence that these faults are still active and likely producing moonquakes today as the Moon continues to gradually cool and shrink.”
The evidence does not establish one precise present-day slip rate for all faults, an exact age for every scarp or an unambiguous source assignment for every shallow moonquake. Those details depend on local geology, crater statistics, seismic-location models and the quality of available observations.
How to recognize a likely lunar fault in an image
- Look for a sharp, curved step rather than a smooth, broad volcanic dome.
- Check whether one side is consistently higher, indicating displacement of a crustal block.
- Examine nearby craters: a scarp that degrades their rims or cuts across them is younger than those craters.
- Compare the setting. A narrow cliff in highlands or mare terrain is more typical of a lobate scarp; a wide ridge embedded in mare basalt may be a wrinkle ridge with competing interpretations.
- Do not infer activity from freshness alone. A strong case requires independent evidence such as seismic associations or stress-model consistency.
In short, lunar faults are the Moon’s record of a cooling body under compression, modified by tides and revealed by scarps, ridges and troughs. The most distinctive young examples are lobate thrust-fault scarps, while Apollo seismology indicates that some faults may still move as the Moon slowly contracts.
