A Lucky Locator is a single-use Extraction Gizmo that points you to a buried Sprite Chest guaranteed to contain a Sprite missing from your collection. It does not let you select a particular character or rarity. Use it after you have enough weapons, shields, mobility and a safe way to extract the Sprite, because the Gizmo and the opportunity are consumable and Chapter 7 Season 3 Gizmos expire when the season ends.
What a Lucky Locator does
Activating the Lucky Locator creates a map marker for a buried Sprite Chest. The chest’s important distinction is its collection guarantee: it contains a Sprite you have not collected yet. Epic Games described the mechanic in its July 30, 2026 announcement as: “The Lucky Locator Gizmo guarantees a Chest containing a Sprite you haven’t collected yet.” The v41.30 notes use the same wording and identify Lucky Locator as a new Gizmo unlocked through Sprite Mastery.
The guarantee is about collection status, not desirability or rarity. If several Sprites remain uncollected, the game does not promise that the chest will contain the one you consider rarest, the one you need for a quest, or a named Sprite you manually choose. It selects an eligible uncollected Sprite according to the game’s rules. Once you open the chest, equip the Sprite and complete its extraction; merely seeing the item on the ground is not the same as adding it safely to your collection.
It is an Extraction Gizmo, not a permanent locator
Extraction Gizmos are consumable items accessed from the Pickaxe slot. A Lucky Locator is spent when you activate it, so treat one as a single attempt to improve your collection rather than equipment you can reuse in multiple matches. Epic Support says Gizmos can come from Bonus Goals quests, Sprite Dust trades and Sprite Mastery progression. They cannot be traded or dropped when you are eliminated.

Gizmos persist for the current season and expire when that season ends. The Chapter 7 Season 3 notes specifically state that this season’s Gizmos expire at the end of the season. Check the in-game expiration timer before saving one for a future match; an unused item that remains in your inventory past the deadline will not be useful in a later season.
How to get a Lucky Locator
The confirmed acquisition route is the Sprite Mastery progression track. A dated guide reports the currently visible reward as one Lucky Locator at mastery level 50, reached by mastering 50 different Sprites. That level and the quantity should be treated as patch-sensitive rather than a permanent rule: Epic confirms the progression-track source and says more Lucky Locators are on the way, but it has not published a reward schedule that applies to every future update.
To check your own progress, open the Sprite Mastery screen from the Fortnite lobby and review the reward track and mastered-Sprite count. If your version displays a different threshold or reward quantity, follow the live in-game track; the visible track is more current than an older guide. Do not assume that another player’s level, account or season has the same reward cadence.

What to do before activating one
The marker is useful only if you can reach the chest and extract what it contains. Spend a few moments preparing instead of activating immediately after landing.
- Check the collection first. Open the Sprite collection and identify which entries are still missing. This tells you whether the one-use guarantee is worth spending now or whether ordinary hunting is still productive.
- Choose a safe-zone position. Activate in a relatively quiet area inside the current safe zone, with enough storm time to travel to the marker and finish extraction.
- Bring combat and escape tools. Carry weapons, shields and at least one mobility option. Another player can see or reach the marked chest before you do, and you may have to defend it.
- Plan the extraction method. Know the location of a safe Extraction Site, or carry a Portable Extractor if you have one. A Portable Extractor can avoid a contested public site and reduces the distance you must travel while carrying the newly found Sprite.
- Watch the match state. Do not trigger the Gizmo while the Storm is moving toward you, while a nearby fight is unresolved, or when your squad cannot cover the route.
How to use a Lucky Locator, step by step
- Enter Battle Royale or Zero Build. The Lucky Locator is used during a match rather than from the lobby collection screen.
- Move to a defensible area in the safe zone. Loot until you have weapons, shields and mobility, then stop where you can react to an opponent approaching the marker.
- Equip the Pickaxe. Extraction Gizmos are accessed through the Pickaxe slot, not the normal weapon inventory.
- Open the Gizmo wheel. Select Lucky Locator and activate it with the control shown for your platform. The exact button prompt can differ between keyboard, controller and other supported inputs.
- Follow the map marker. The marker leads to a buried Sprite Chest. If the chest is underground or covered, use the Pickaxe to uncover it as indicated by the terrain and on-screen prompt.
- Open, equip and extract. Open the chest, equip the uncollected Sprite, and take it immediately to an Extraction Site or use a Portable Extractor. Leave the area only after the extraction has completed; being eliminated before then can waste the opportunity.
The chest location is not a private instance. A nearby opponent can contest it, take the contents or eliminate you before extraction. If the route becomes unsafe, disengage, reposition inside the safe zone and return only when you can finish the sequence. Spending the Gizmo does not make the chest immune to normal match threats.
When a Lucky Locator is worth using
Use it for late-stage collection gaps
A Lucky Locator has the greatest value after normal Sprite hunting starts producing duplicates or when one or more missing entries have become difficult to find naturally. At that point, a guaranteed uncollected Sprite is more useful than another random chest. It is also a sensible choice when the season is approaching its end and you have not completed the collection, provided you still have enough time for a full run.

Delay it when your match position is weak
Do not activate one immediately after landing with no shields, no reliable weapon or a storm path that forces a long rotation. The guarantee does not protect you from elimination. Waiting for a better inventory and a quiet safe-zone location gives you a realistic chance to convert the chest into a completed collection entry.
Use extraction planning to reduce the risk
If the nearest public Extraction Site is in a crowded point of interest, a Portable Extractor can be the safer choice. If you do not have one, activate only when you can reach a public site without crossing an active fight or outrunning the Storm. In team modes, tell squadmates before activation so they can scout the marker and cover the extraction route.
Do not save it beyond the season
Saving a Gizmo makes sense only while there is sufficient time left in Chapter 7 Season 3. Because these items expire with the season, the final matches are a deadline, not an opportunity to carry the item forward. Use the expiration timer shown in your game as the deciding date rather than relying on a guide written for an earlier patch.

Lucky Locator versus Sprite Locator
Both items help you find Sprite content, but their outcomes are different. A standard Sprite Locator finds a Sprite Chest without promising that its contents are new. Lucky Locator trades that broader, repeatable-purpose search for a collection-focused guarantee.
| Comparison | Lucky Locator | Sprite Locator |
|---|---|---|
| New-to-collection guarantee | Yes. The chest is guaranteed to contain a Sprite you have not collected. | No. The chest can contain a duplicate. |
| Can you name the exact Sprite? | No. The game chooses an eligible missing Sprite; no specific rarity or character is promised. | No such selection is established. |
| Best use | Closing difficult or final collection gaps after ordinary searches produce duplicates. | General Sprite farming when duplicates are acceptable. |
| Acquisition information | Earned through Sprite Mastery; the currently documented visible reward is one at mastery level 50, subject to patch changes. | Acquisition details are not established by the cited Chapter 7 Season 3 material. |
| Risk after activation | Single-use marker and chest can be contested; you can lose the opportunity before extraction. | The chest is likewise exposed to normal match threats, but a duplicate outcome is possible even after a successful extraction. |
This makes the two items complementary rather than interchangeable. Use ordinary Sprite Locators while building a collection and reserve Lucky Locators for a point where a guaranteed new entry justifies consuming a scarce item.
Common questions and failure cases
Does it guarantee a rare or named Sprite?
No. It guarantees only that the chest contains a Sprite absent from your collection at the time the game determines the reward. “Missing” does not mean “rare,” and there is no documented control for selecting a particular name.

Is a Lucky Locator one-time use?
Yes. It is a consumable Extraction Gizmo. Activating it starts that match’s locator attempt; you cannot reuse the same item for a second chest.
What if I am eliminated before opening the chest?
The marker and chest remain part of the live match, so another player may reach them first. Because Gizmos cannot be dropped or traded on elimination, you cannot hand the unused item to a teammate after being eliminated. Treat activation as a commitment to reach the chest yourself.
What if I open it but fail to extract the Sprite?
Extraction is the securing step. If you are eliminated before completing it, the collection benefit may be lost even though you reached the chest. Re-entering another match will not recreate that spent activation; use a new Gizmo if you still have one.

Can I carry it into the next season?
No. Chapter 7 Season 3 Gizmos expire when that season ends. The season timer in Fortnite is the authoritative warning for your account and patch.
Quick decision checklist
- You have checked the collection and still need at least one Sprite.
- Normal Sprite hunting is producing duplicates or the remaining entry is hard to find.
- You have weapons, shields and mobility before activating.
- The marker can be reached inside the current safe-zone timing.
- A public Extraction Site is defensible, or you have a Portable Extractor.
- Your squad knows the plan and can cover the chest and extraction route.
- The Chapter 7 Season 3 expiration timer leaves enough time for the run.
Bottom line
Use Lucky Locator when collection certainty matters more than another random search: activate it from the Pickaxe/Gizmo wheel in a prepared, relatively quiet safe-zone position, reach the buried chest, and complete extraction immediately. It guarantees a Sprite that is new to your collection, not a specific rarity or named reward, and its single-use inventory expires with Chapter 7 Season 3.
