Longevity studies can estimate how long groups tend to live and identify factors associated with higher or lower mortality. They cannot reliably tell you the age at which you, as an individual, will die. Even models using extensive health and demographic data leave much of the variation in individual lifespans unexplained, and their performance differs between groups.
Why population life expectancy is not your personal forecast
Life expectancy is calculated from mortality patterns for a defined population or birth cohort. It answers a population question: given the death rates used in the calculation, what lifespan would a hypothetical person experience on average? It is not a promise that a particular person will live to that age, nor does it describe the range of outcomes for everyone in the population. The World Health Organization’s explanation of life-expectancy methods is grounded in population life tables, not a personalized countdown.
The distinction matters because an average can be meaningful for planning while saying little about any one person’s remaining years. People included in a population differ in health, circumstances and mortality risk; a single average compresses those different outcomes into one number. A life-expectancy estimate also depends on its reference population and method. An estimate for a country, a birth cohort or people at a particular age should not be treated as interchangeable with another estimate.

“How long will I live?” is therefore not the same question as “What is life expectancy for people like me?” The second can be addressed using population data. The first asks for an individual prediction that current studies cannot establish with comparable certainty.

What different longevity estimates actually answer
Numbers presented as longevity estimates may refer to fundamentally different outcomes. Before interpreting one, identify whether it describes a population average, a future cohort, relative risk or a forecast for an individual. The labels are not cosmetic: each represents a different question and a different level of uncertainty.
| Estimate or tool | Question it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Life expectancy | What average lifespan follows from mortality rates for a specified population or cohort? | The age at which a particular person will die. |
| Cohort mortality forecast | How might life expectancy change for people born in specified years if modeled mortality trends continue? | The remaining lifespan of a named person alive today. |
| Relative mortality-risk model | Which people or groups have higher or lower modeled risk of death over a defined outcome and period? | A precise age-at-death prediction, unless that outcome has been specifically validated. |
| Individual lifespan model | How well can measured characteristics predict observed lifespan for individuals in a study population? | A certain or universally accurate personal forecast; performance may vary across populations. |
| Biological-age or biomarker measure | How do measured biological characteristics relate to mortality or risk grouping in a studied population? | That a consumer reading reveals an individual’s death date or remaining years. |
The table’s key distinction is between ranking and forecasting. A model may distinguish people with relatively higher and lower risk—its discrimination—without estimating each person’s outcome precisely. Similarly, a marker associated with mortality can be useful in a population analysis without being a validated personal lifespan calculator.
Why sophisticated individual models still fall short
The most direct test of individual lifespan prediction in the evidence considered here used data from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study. Badolato and colleagues compared 12 statistical and machine-learning models with more than 150 predictors. The models showed comparable accuracy and relatively high discrimination, yet failed to account for most individual lifespan heterogeneity. The authors’ conclusion is that strong ranking performance and substantial uncertainty about individual outcomes can coexist. The study abstract describes the limits directly.
This is not a contradiction. Discrimination concerns how well a model separates people who experience different outcomes; it does not by itself show whether the model’s predicted ages are close to the ages at which individuals actually die. To use a result as a personal forecast, a reader would also want to know how well it is calibrated, what outcome and time horizon it predicts, whether it has been tested outside the data used to build it, and how uncertainty is communicated. A single performance label cannot answer all of those questions.

Performance was also lower for men, non-Hispanic Black participants and people with lower educational attainment in that analysis. This makes it especially important not to present one headline accuracy statement as if it applies equally to everyone. The result belongs to the study’s U.S. population, measures and modeling choices; it is not a universal score for every lifespan tool or demographic group.
Group differences are real, but they do not make individual lifespans predictable
Population differences and individual prediction are related but separate issues. A group can have a different average life expectancy from another group, while the lifespan of any one person within either group remains uncertain. A group statistic does not identify which individuals will live longer or shorter lives.
Breen and Seltzer studied linked census and death-record data for 121,000 U.S. men born in 1910. In this historical, male-only cohort, early-adulthood social, economic and demographic characteristics explained less than two percent of overall individual lifespan variation. That finding is specific to the cohort and the characteristics measured; it is not a timeless estimate for other populations. Their analysis also should not be read to mean that social conditions or structural inequality do not matter. The study documents the gap between group disparities and how much measured early-adulthood information could explain variation among individuals in that cohort.
When reading a claim about a group, ask what group was actually studied, how it was defined, and what outcome was compared. “People with characteristic X had higher average risk” does not mean that everyone with X will have the outcome, or that everyone without X will avoid it. Turning group-level findings into certainty about a person is an ecological leap the data do not justify.

What biological age and biomarkers can—and can’t—show
Biological-age measures combine biomarkers to characterize biological aging relative to chronological age. They may be studied as risk indicators, but an association with mortality is not the same thing as a personalized forecast. The meaning of a test result depends on the population in which the measure was studied, the specific markers used, the adjustment factors in the analysis and the outcome being predicted.
In the Lifelines cohort, Akeju and colleagues studied 52,418 participants. After specified adjustments, each one-year increase in biological age was associated with an 11% higher overall death risk (hazard ratio 1.11; 95% confidence interval 1.09–1.13). The association remained after adjustment for genetic factors. This is a population-level association at a given chronological age and sex; it does not mean that a person’s lifespan is reduced by 11%, or that a one-year difference in a consumer test moves a death date by a calculable amount. The study examined genetic correlates of biological aging and mortality, not a universal consumer lifespan test.
A separate EPIC-Heidelberg analysis followed 5,789 middle-aged and older adults for a median of 18 years. Five serum markers added predictive information to models that used lifestyle factors. Among participants aged 60 or older, the modeled life-expectancy difference between the highest- and lowest-risk quintiles was 16.8 years for men and 9.87 years for women; when aging markers were included, the corresponding differences were 22.7 and 14.00 years. These figures compare modeled risk groups, not the expected error range or forecast for an individual. The results are tied to that German study population and analysis, and do not establish that the same marker panel gives a precise or transportable estimate for a person elsewhere. The EPIC-Heidelberg study reports the analysis and its population.

For someone asking “Can a biological-age test predict my lifespan?”, the evidence here supports a narrower answer: biological measures can carry information associated with mortality in particular cohorts. It does not establish that a test sold to consumers can reliably say how old an individual will be when they die. A risk association can be scientifically informative without functioning as a personal oracle.

How much do genes affect longevity?
Heritability is often misinterpreted as a measure of personal genetic destiny. It describes how variation in a trait is apportioned in a studied population under particular conditions and assumptions. It does not mean that the same percentage of each individual’s lifespan is fixed by genes, nor that a genetic result reveals a person’s age at death.
A 2026 paper by Shenhar and colleagues estimated intrinsic lifespan heritability above 50% after modeling the effect of extrinsic mortality, such as deaths from accidents or infections. This is their model-based estimate for population variation after addressing that source of confounding; it is not a claim that genes determine more than half of any individual person’s lifespan. The paper concerns how intrinsic lifespan variation is estimated, not a method for calculating an individual death date.
The biological-age study discussed above found a mortality association that persisted after genetic adjustment, but that does not turn either genetic information or biological age into a personal forecast. The two kinds of evidence answer different questions: one estimates population-level variation under a model, and the other examines associations between measured biological age and mortality in a cohort.
Why forecasts for future generations are not personal predictions
Forecasts about life expectancy for birth cohorts describe population trends under specified modeling assumptions. They are not estimates of how many years remain for a particular person. A 2025 analysis of 23 high-income countries found signs of deceleration in life-expectancy gains for cohorts born from 1939 through 2000. The finding is a forecast contingent on methods and mortality trends, not an individual prediction. The cohort forecast study addresses changing population gains.

This distinction is useful when a headline says that people born in a certain period may live longer—or that gains are slowing. Such claims concern averages across a defined birth cohort and rely on modeled trends. They do not tell a person who is already alive how long they will live, and they cannot be substituted for an estimate of that person’s remaining lifespan.
Personal estimates are uncertain even when people make them themselves
Uncertainty is not limited to statistical models. Researchers in a French survey elicited several survival probabilities from 3,331 respondents and calculated subjective uncertainty about longevity. By the study’s measure, uncertainty exceeded 10 years for both men and women. This describes reported uncertainty in that particular survey, not a scientifically established interval that applies to every person. The 2018 study measured how uncertain respondents felt about their longevity.
Subjective estimates and model outputs should not be conflated. A person’s stated uncertainty reflects the way the survey elicited and quantified beliefs; it is not proof that a given number of years is the correct confidence interval for a clinical or statistical prediction. The useful lesson is more limited: people’s own longevity estimates are uncertain too, and apparent precision in a number should not be mistaken for certainty.
A practical checklist for judging a longevity claim
When a study, calculator or test gives you a lifespan-related number, use these questions to determine what it can support:
- What is the target? Is the result a population life expectancy, a cohort forecast, a relative mortality risk, survival probability to a particular age, or an individual age-at-death estimate?
- Who was studied? Check the country, birth cohort, age range, sex, demographic groups and whether participants came from a community or clinical sample. A finding from one group does not automatically transfer to another.
- What information went in? Inputs might include health history, lifestyle, social and economic measures, genetic information or biomarkers. A large number of predictors does not ensure a precise individual answer.
- What outcome and time horizon were measured? Overall mortality risk, observed lifespan, survival to an age and modeled life expectancy are different outcomes. Look for the follow-up period or forecast period and do not infer one from another.
- How was the model evaluated? Discrimination, calibration and external validation address different aspects of performance. Ask whether the model was tested in a separate population and whether predicted outcomes match observed outcomes for the groups that matter to you.
- How is uncertainty expressed? A point estimate without an uncertainty interval or explanation can look more exact than the evidence warrants. Find out what uncertainty the stated range represents and for which population it was calculated.
- Is the finding an association or a causal effect? A factor associated with mortality in an observational cohort is not automatically shown to cause a change in lifespan.
- Does the conclusion match the analysis? Check that a group comparison is not described as an individual prediction and that a future cohort forecast is not presented as the remaining lifespan of someone alive now.
If those details are missing, treat the number as a limited indicator rather than a personal answer. The more a claim presents one exact age without clarifying its outcome, population, validation and uncertainty, the more carefully it should be interpreted.
What a responsible conclusion looks like
Longevity research is valuable for understanding mortality patterns, comparing populations, identifying associations and improving forecasts for groups. It can also help researchers test whether measured characteristics carry information about relative risk. But evidence that helps describe a population does not automatically become a dependable forecast for one person.
The strongest individual-model evidence reviewed here still leaves most lifespan variation unexplained, while findings about biomarkers, genes, historical inequalities and future cohorts each answer narrower questions. The sound conclusion is not that prediction is impossible in every sense; it is that a population estimate, a risk association and a personal death-age forecast are different products. A reader should not treat one as another without evidence that directly validates that use.
