Yes—local AI can generate responses without Wi‑Fi once the application, runtime, and model files are already on your device. In supported tools, you can continue chatting with a downloaded model, process local documents, and expose an inference service on your computer or local network. The connection is needed beforehand for tasks such as finding models, downloading files, installing runtimes, receiving updates, and retrieving current online information.
That boundary matters because “local AI” describes a way of running inference, not one universal product. Offline guarantees apply to the documented features of a particular application and model. The sections below use published behavior from LM Studio and Microsoft’s Foundry Local documentation as concrete examples, while separating those product claims from general limits that apply to offline inference.
What “local AI” means
Local AI runs a model on your own computer instead of sending each prompt to a remote service. The model’s files, the software runtime, and the computation needed to produce an answer are stored or executed on the device. Your prompt can therefore be processed while the network is disconnected—provided every component required by that workflow is already available locally.
A local model does not become a live search engine merely because it runs on your machine. It generates from the parameters it learned during training and from files or other inputs you provide locally. Its knowledge can be outdated, and it cannot discover a new web page, call a cloud-only API, or download a newer model while offline.

LM Studio summarizes its documented behavior this way: “LM Studio can operate entirely offline, just make sure to get some model files first.” That sentence describes LM Studio’s supported offline workflow; it is not a blanket promise about every application marketed as local AI.
What can keep working with no internet
Chat with a downloaded model
After a compatible model has been downloaded and loaded, ordinary text generation can continue without an internet connection. You can ask questions, request a rewrite, draft text, classify content, or have a conversation for as long as the computer has power and enough resources for the model and context you are using.
Responses are limited to the model’s learned knowledge and the information in your prompt. A disconnected model cannot verify a breaking-news claim, check a current price, read a newly published page, or confirm a live status unless you have supplied that information in a local file or message.

Chat with local documents
Some applications add retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): they index files on your device and provide relevant passages to the model when you ask a question. LM Studio states that document processing for its RAG feature happens locally and that the document stays on the machine. With the files and the required model already present, asking questions about those documents can work offline.
This is a product-specific statement, not a guarantee for every document-chat tool. Check whether your application performs embedding, indexing, and inference locally. A program may advertise a local interface while sending document extraction, OCR, embeddings, or answer generation to a remote service.

Serve a local inference endpoint
LM Studio documents serving inference on localhost or on a local network as an offline operation. That lets a locally installed application or script send requests to the model without reaching the public internet. Other devices on the same home or office network may be able to use the service if you deliberately expose it and your firewall permits the connection.
“Local network” is not the same as “internet.” A request from another device still stays within that network, but it may expose prompts and outputs to anyone who can access the endpoint. Use authentication and firewall rules when the software provides them, and do not bind a service to every network interface unless you understand the security consequences.

Microsoft’s Foundry Local documentation describes a similar setup. After a model is downloaded and cached, inference runs on the device, and the product says inference inputs and outputs do not leave the machine. Catalog refresh is optional; when offline, Foundry Local can fall back to a cached catalog. That allows you to select from information already stored locally, but it does not reveal models released after the last refresh.
What needs a connection, and what disappears offline
Initial installation and model acquisition
Preparation is the part most likely to be overlooked. LM Studio lists model-catalog search, model downloads, runtime downloads, and application-update checks as network-dependent actions. If the required model or runtime is missing, disconnecting the computer will not make the app obtain it.
Microsoft likewise says the initial Foundry Local model download requires internet access. Once the files are cached, inference can continue offline; before that point, it cannot. A model copied from another computer can be useful, but confirm that the destination application supports the model format, quantization, tokenizer, and runtime.

Live information and web retrieval
Offline inference cannot provide current web content. Web search, browsing, online retrieval plugins, cloud databases, live translation services, and APIs that require authentication all stop working when their network dependency is unavailable. A model may still produce a plausible answer about a current event, but plausibility is not freshness or verification.
If a task depends on changing information, download the source material while connected and give it to a local workflow, or keep a cloud-backed step available. Label the date of locally cached information so you know what period it represents.
Cloud-only capabilities and scale
An application can combine local and remote features. A local chat window might still offer a button for a hosted model, online search, account synchronization, telemetry, or a managed document service. Those features disappear or show an error without connectivity even though the on-device model continues to answer prompts.
Cloud services can also provide larger models, specialized tools, or elastic capacity that a personal computer cannot match. Microsoft’s “Build with local AI on Windows” guidance describes local inference as complementary to cloud AI: local execution suits device data, immediate interaction, and unreliable connections, while cloud services can suit workloads that need cloud scale or capabilities.
Prepare a computer for offline use
Use this sequence before taking a machine somewhere without reliable connectivity:

- Choose the exact workflow. Decide whether you need text chat, document questions, a local API, or another feature. Verify that the application documents that feature as local rather than merely presenting a local-looking interface.
- Install the application while connected. Complete sign-in or license activation if the product requires it. Some software may need an online activation again after a major change, so check its policy before relying on it in a disconnected location.
- Install the required runtime. LM Studio identifies runtime downloads as a network-dependent step. Let the application obtain the runtime that matches your operating system and hardware.
- Download and load a model. Select a model that fits your memory and performance target. If you obtain it elsewhere, use the application’s supported sideload or import process and verify that the model appears as available.
- Prepare local inputs. Copy documents, data sets, prompts, and any embedding or index files that the workflow needs. For document chat, finish indexing while connected if the application requires a separate preparation phase.
- Configure optional local services. If a script or another device will call a localhost or local-network endpoint, set the port, access controls, and firewall rules before disconnecting.
- Test with the network disabled. Turn off Wi‑Fi and unplug Ethernet, then restart the application and run the exact prompts or document queries you expect to use. This catches hidden update checks, missing runtimes, sign-in requirements, and paths that point to cloud storage.
- Keep recovery copies. Store installers, model files, runtime packages, and configuration notes on a drive you can access offline. Large models can take significant storage space, and replacing one after disconnection may be impossible.

These rows describe the products’ published behavior, not a certification for every model or integration. Updates to either product can change supported platforms and offline details, so check the current vendor documentation before deployment.
Hardware determines how practical offline AI feels
Offline capability does not remove hardware limits. Generation speed, maximum context, model size, and the number of simultaneous requests depend on memory, processor, graphics hardware, and the model’s quantization. A model that technically loads may still be too slow for an interactive workflow.
LM Studio’s current system guidance gives a useful, product-specific example:

Use those figures to screen a computer, not to promise a particular experience. A smaller quantized model may run acceptably on less capable hardware, while a larger model, long context, image input, or multiple users can require substantially more memory. Confirm the selected application’s support matrix before buying hardware.
Privacy: local processing is a boundary, not a blanket guarantee
Keeping inference on a device can reduce the need to upload prompts and files, but privacy depends on the complete workflow. Inspect whether optional web search, cloud models, synchronization, crash reporting, remote embeddings, or account services are enabled. A local front end can still route a particular button or model to a remote provider.

For the products cited here, LM Studio says chat inputs and documents remain on the device in its documented offline functions, and Microsoft says Foundry Local inference inputs and outputs do not leave the machine. Treat those as scoped vendor statements. They do not automatically cover third-party plug-ins, operating-system backups, shared folders, network endpoints, or applications that consume the local model’s output.
Troubleshoot common offline failures
The app opens but says a model is unavailable
Reconnect briefly if possible and download the model and runtime, or copy compatible files through an approved sideload process. Check the model path and available disk space, then load the model once before disconnecting again.
Chat works, but document questions fail
Confirm that the documents are stored locally and that indexing or embedding completed. A document feature may require a separate runtime or an online extraction service even when basic chat is local. Test a small local file with the network disabled to isolate the missing component.

That is an information-freshness limit, not necessarily a software error. Supply a dated local source, defer the question until connected, or use a workflow that explicitly retrieves current information online.
A local API works on the computer but not another device
Check whether the server is bound only to localhost, whether the devices share the same network, and whether the firewall allows the chosen port. Keep the endpoint private; a local-network service is still an accessible service to other devices on that network.
When local, cloud, or a combination is the right choice

The practical rule is simple: choose local inference when the value comes from device-resident data, immediate response, or resilience to a lost connection. Keep a connected or hybrid path for tasks that require live information, cloud-only tools, or more compute than the device can provide. Download everything, verify the exact workflow with the network disabled, and treat the model’s knowledge as only as current as its files and training.
