There is no single lifetime limiter for an InAs quantum-dot electron spin. In the self-assembled dots studied by Gillard and colleagues, the dominant process changes with magnetic field: reservoir-assisted cotunneling is important below roughly 2 T, while phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation dominates at higher fields. Hyperfine-mediated processes become especially relevant near zero field.

The key qualification is that this work directly measures the longitudinal spin-relaxation time, T1, not a universal phase-coherence time T2 or T2*. An isolated dot can therefore retain its spin for more than one second—and is estimated to reach about 20 seconds under one set of conditions—while suffering a lower optical initialization fidelity.

What the experiment actually measured

The most relevant primary study, published by Gillard et al. in npj Quantum Information in 2021, examined single electrons in self-assembled InAs quantum dots embedded in an n–i–Schottky diode. The researchers changed the tunnel-barrier thickness to control how strongly the dot coupled to a nearby Fermi reservoir, then measured how long the electron remained in its prepared spin state.

That decay time is the longitudinal relaxation time, T1,e. It describes energy relaxation between the two spin states. It is not automatically the same as:

  • T2: the phase-coherence time, including both irreversible dephasing and the relaxation contribution.
  • T2*: the inhomogeneous dephasing time seen when slowly varying noise is not removed by an echo or other refocusing sequence.

A long T1 is necessary for a useful memory, but it does not prove that arbitrary spin superpositions retain phase for the same interval. Any comparison headed “coherence time” should therefore identify the measured quantity and the pulse or readout protocol first.

The device environment that sets the limit

The confined electron is not isolated from its surroundings. In the structures studied, its hyperfine interaction couples it to approximately 103–105 surrounding nuclear spins. Other relevant couplings include electron–phonon interactions, strain-induced nuclear quadrupolar effects, nuclear-spin diffusion, tunneling to the electron reservoir, and charge fluctuations from nearby impurity traps.

These channels do not contribute equally at every field or temperature. Barrier thickness changes the reservoir coupling, while magnetic field changes the energy available for spin transitions. Temperature controls phonon occupation and the thermal environment. The result is a regime-dependent lifetime rather than a single material constant for “InAs qubits.”

Which mechanism dominates at each magnetic field?

Approximate regime in the 2021 study Dominant or important process Why it matters Qualification
Bz below about 2 T Reservoir-mediated cotunneling Virtual tunneling events couple the dot spin to the Fermi reservoir and can drive relaxation. The rate depends on tunnel-barrier thickness and the dot’s proximity to the reservoir.
Bz above about 2 T, at temperatures above 4.2 K Phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation Spin–orbit coupling gives lattice vibrations a route to carry away the electron’s spin energy. The crossover is specific to the studied architecture and conditions, not a universal 2-T boundary.
Very low field, around or below 0.2 T Electron–nuclear flip-flops Electron and nuclear Zeeman energies can approach nuclear quadrupolar energy scales, making energy-conserving flip-flops possible. The exact onset depends on strain, nuclear environment and device design.

Low-field cotunneling to the Fermi reservoir

At low magnetic field, the electron can relax through cotunneling: a higher-order process in which the dot and reservoir exchange virtual charge and spin without leaving a permanently charged dot. A thinner barrier increases the tunneling probability, so the reservoir becomes an efficient relaxation pathway. In this regime, improving the semiconductor crystal alone cannot remove the dominant loss if the electrical isolation remains weak.

Because cotunneling is controlled by the barrier and reservoir geometry, two nominally similar InAs dots can have very different T1 values. Barrier thickness, barrier composition, the distance to the doped contact and the reservoir’s Fermi conditions all need to be reported when comparing measurements.

High-field phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation

Once the field is increased beyond roughly 2 T in the reported measurements, phonon-assisted relaxation enabled by spin–orbit coupling becomes the limiting channel. Spin–orbit interaction mixes the nominal spin states with orbital states; electron–phonon coupling can then connect the mixed states while a phonon carries away the Zeeman energy.

This channel explains why simply making the tunnel barrier thicker cannot increase the lifetime without bound. When reservoir coupling is suppressed, the lattice-mediated process eventually sets the ceiling. The study identifies this high-field mechanism at temperatures above 4.2 K, so its rate should not be transplanted unchanged to a different temperature range.

Hyperfine interaction and the nuclear bath

InAs contains nuclei with spins, and the electron’s wavefunction overlaps many of them. Hyperfine interaction therefore creates an effective, fluctuating magnetic environment. At ordinary finite fields, energy mismatch can suppress direct electron–nuclear exchange. Near zero field, however, the electron Zeeman splitting can approach nuclear quadrupolar energy scales. Around or below 0.2 T, energy-conserving electron–nuclear flip-flops may then add a strong relaxation channel.

Strain-related quadrupolar coupling also changes the nuclear energy levels and can affect how the nuclear bath evolves. Nuclear-spin diffusion moves polarization through the surrounding material, while charge traps can alter the local electric field and indirectly modify the electron’s orbital and spin environment. These effects are reasons to treat “hyperfine-limited” as a family of processes rather than a single rate.

Why a thicker tunnel barrier creates a design trade-off

Reducing tunnel coupling is the most direct way to remove cotunneling. In the thick-barrier devices, the measured electron-spin lifetime exceeded one second at approximately Bz = 0.4 T. The authors estimated that an effectively isolated dot could reach a maximum T1,e of about 20 seconds at roughly 4.2–4.5 K and 0.4 T, with phonon relaxation expected to bound the high-field side and direct hyperfine processes the low-field side.

That isolation also interferes with optical preparation. During optical spin initialization, the reservoir helps replace an electron lost through Auger recombination. If the barrier is made too thick, the replacement process is too slow or unavailable. In the near-isolated configuration discussed by Gillard et al., the inferred initialization fidelity was about 77%, below 80%, because Auger recombination could eject the resident electron.

“These experiments reveal fundamental limits and trade-offs of quantum dot spin dynamics: while reduced tunnelling can be used to achieve electron spin qubit lifetimes exceeding 1 s, the optical spin initialisation fidelity is reduced below 80%, limited by Auger recombination.”

How to interpret the frequently quoted 20-second figure

The approximately 20-second value is an estimate for an isolated dot, not a universal InAs-qubit specification. It applies to the authors’ extrapolation around 0.4 T and 4.2–4.5 K, using the measured field dependence and identified mechanisms. It is also a T1 estimate, not a demonstrated universal T2 or T2*.

At lower fields, direct hyperfine-related relaxation is expected to prevent indefinite improvement. At higher fields, phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation supplies the opposing bound. A different dot geometry, tunnel contact, strain profile, isotope composition, temperature or measurement protocol can move both bounds and the crossover between them.

T1 is not the same as phase coherence

Spin relaxation destroys population memory. Phase coherence can be lost even while the populations remain unchanged, through fluctuations in the electron’s energy splitting. Static disorder, slowly varying nuclear fields, charge noise and magnetic-field drift can all shorten T2*. Refocusing sequences can remove some of that quasi-static dephasing and reveal a longer T2, whereas they cannot restore a spin population already lost through T1 relaxation.

For a quantitative comparison, a report should state whether it used free-induction decay, a Hahn echo, dynamical decoupling, optical spin pumping, spin-selective tunneling or another protocol. It should also specify whether the quoted number is a single-dot result, an ensemble average, a fitted relaxation constant or an extrapolation. Without those details, “coherence time” can combine unlike measurements.

Quantity Question it answers What the cited study establishes
T1 How long does the spin population remain before energy relaxation? Directly measured; greater than 1 s with reduced tunneling near 0.4 T, with an isolated-dot estimate near 20 s under stated conditions.
T2* How long does an unrefocused superposition retain phase in the presence of static and slowly varying noise? Not established as a universal value by the cited lifetime measurements.
T2 How long does phase remain after refocusing removable low-frequency noise? Not established as a universal value by the cited lifetime measurements.

What to check when comparing InAs spin-qubit results

  1. Identify the time constant. Reject a direct comparison if one paper reports T1 and another reports an echo T2 without explaining the difference.
  2. Record field orientation and magnitude. The reported regime change is expressed in the axial field Bz; low-field and high-field data probe different mechanisms.
  3. Record temperature. The high-field phonon statement in the primary study applies at temperatures above 4.2 K, while the lifetime estimate is quoted around 4.2–4.5 K.
  4. Describe the electrical environment. Include barrier thickness, reservoir distance and whether the dot is intentionally near-isolated.
  5. Include initialization fidelity. A longer storage lifetime is not an unqualified improvement if the starting spin state is prepared incorrectly more often.
  6. Separate measurement from extrapolation. The greater-than-one-second result is a measured lifetime under reduced tunneling; the approximately 20-second number is an isolated-dot estimate.
  7. State the device class. These conclusions concern self-assembled InAs dots in the reported diode structure and should not be generalized automatically to gate-defined dots, nanowires or other host materials.

Practical implications for qubit design

Use isolation selectively

A tunable barrier can provide a preparation mode with stronger reservoir access and a storage mode with weaker cotunneling. Such a strategy addresses the initialization–lifetime conflict, but switching must not introduce additional charge noise or uncontrolled spin rotations. The appropriate barrier is the one that meets the complete protocol’s error budget, not the one that produces the largest isolated T1.

Choose the field away from avoidable crossings

Operating very close to zero field can expose the electron to energy-conserving nuclear flip-flops. Moving to a moderate field can suppress that particular process, although increasing the field eventually strengthens the relevance of phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation. The best field is consequently a device-specific compromise rather than a universal optimum.

Measure the noise that limits the intended operation

If the qubit is used as a memory, T1 is central. If it performs phase-sensitive gates, Ramsey and echo measurements are needed to determine T2* and T2. Charge sensing, nuclear-state monitoring and temperature sweeps can help distinguish reservoir, hyperfine, phonon and trap-related contributions instead of assigning every decay to “decoherence.”

Scope and limitations of the evidence

The 2021 study provides the numerical lifetimes, field regimes and initialization trade-off for its self-assembled InAs devices. A 2013 review gives broader context on nuclear-spin and spin–orbit mechanisms, but it predates that lifetime experiment. Neither source establishes one coherence-time number valid for every InAs architecture. Geometry, isotopic composition, strain, electrical contacts, optical protocol, magnetic-field orientation and temperature can all change the balance of mechanisms.

The defensible answer is therefore conditional: in the studied dots, reservoir cotunneling limits low-field T1, phonon-assisted spin–orbit relaxation limits high-field T1, and hyperfine-related channels matter near very low field. Extending the lifetime requires reducing the dominant channel without making initialization and readout unreliable.
