Electrically controlled magnetism is not one universal effect. Some devices use an electric field or voltage to change magnetic anisotropy, domains, ordering, or exchange coupling with little continuous current through the magnetic layer. Others use a current to transfer angular momentum through spin-transfer or spin-orbit torque. Practical devices are limited by how strongly the control signal couples to the magnet, the size of the reliable operating window, switching speed, write-error rate, endurance, readout, and compatibility with surrounding circuits. A low switching-energy result alone does not make a useful memory or logic technology.
What “electrically controlled magnetism” includes
The phrase covers several mechanisms with different physics and engineering constraints. Treating them as interchangeable leads to misleading claims about speed, energy, or readiness.
Electric-field and voltage modulation
In voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), an applied voltage changes the energy preference for a magnetization direction at an interface, often in a magnetic tunnel-junction structure. A voltage pulse can therefore make one magnetic orientation easier to reach than another. The goal is to alter the magnetic state without continuously driving a large charge current through the magnetic element.
Electric fields can also act through electrostatic charge, changes in electronic structure, or an adjacent ferroelectric, piezoelectric, or multiferroic layer. These hybrid structures can modify anisotropy, spin order, ordering temperature, or domain structure. The 2014 Annual Review treatment of electric-field control describes both single-phase multiferroics and these adjacent-insulator structures, including prototype spin valves and magnetic tunnel junctions.

Strain-mediated and magnetoelectric control
A piezoelectric or ferroelectric layer can convert voltage into strain. Magnetostriction in the neighboring magnetic film then changes its preferred direction or domain configuration. In a magnetoelectric structure, electric and magnetic order are coupled so that an electrical stimulus can influence magnetization. The electrical input may be low-current, but the stack still has to produce enough repeatable mechanical or interfacial change to overcome magnetic barriers.
Magneto-ionic and electrochemical control
Electrolyte gates or solid ion conductors can move ions into, out of, or along a magnetic layer. This can change oxidation, composition, magnetic anisotropy, or exchange interactions. Because the state may be set by a chemical or structural change, the result can be nonvolatile. The same ion motion that enables a large effect can make the response slower and can raise questions about reversibility and endurance.
Current-induced spin torque
Spin-transfer torque (STT) uses a spin-polarized current from one ferromagnet to switch another. Spin-orbit torque (SOT) uses current in a material with strong spin-orbit interaction to generate a torque on an adjacent magnet. These are electrical switching methods, but they are current-driven rather than purely voltage-controlled: charge current, resistance, heating, and current-density limits are part of the write-energy budget.

A 2024 review places these torques alongside multiferroics, MRAM, magnetoelectric spin-orbit transistors, microwave emitters, spin diodes, skyrmion devices, and neuromorphic components. Those categories span laboratory demonstrations, prototypes, and proposed architectures; their inclusion does not mean that every concept is a commercial product.
How a practical electrically controlled magnetic device operates
A useful way to analyze a device is to separate the write stimulus, magnetic transition, and readout rather than calling the whole stack “voltage switching.”

- Apply a defined stimulus. The circuit supplies a voltage, an electric-field pulse, a strain pulse, an ion-driving bias, or a current. Pulse amplitude, duration, polarity, and the state of neighboring lines matter.
- Generate a coupling change. The stimulus modifies anisotropy, interfacial charge, strain, ion concentration, exchange coupling, or spin angular momentum.
- Cross the switching barrier. The magnetic configuration must move from one stable state to another. Thermal fluctuations and fabrication variation make this probabilistic unless the margin is large.
- Remove or reverse the stimulus. A memory cell must retain the intended state when the write signal ends, while a volatile logic element may be designed to relax back.
- Read the state. The resistance, Hall signal, magneto-optical response, microwave output, or another observable must be large enough for the sense circuit to distinguish states at the required error rate.
Each step can be the bottleneck. A strong coupling may improve switching but damage endurance; a stable magnetic state may improve retention but require a larger write pulse; a high read contrast may require an additional layer or bias condition.
The main limits in practical devices
1. Coupling strength versus a usable operating window
The control signal must change the magnetic energy landscape enough to switch a cell, but not so much that small voltage, temperature, or process variations cause an unintended transition. This balance is the operating window: the range of pulse conditions that writes the desired state reliably.
Recommended Free Tools
VCMA illustrates the problem. Its energy-efficiency advantage does not eliminate write failures. A 2022 review states that VCMA-driven switching faces “the write-error rate, narrow operating window, and necessity for external bias magnetic field.” The bias field adds magnets, current lines, or calibration requirements to a supposedly simple voltage-write scheme. It can also complicate array layout and disturb nearby cells.
Improving anisotropy-modulation efficiency is not automatically equivalent to improving switching. A large change in anisotropy can make a pulse effective in one condition while increasing sensitivity to thickness, interface quality, temperature, or pulse timing. Designers therefore optimize the full switching probability distribution, not a single coupling coefficient.
2. Speed depends on the mechanism and the circuit
There is no single switching time for electrically controlled magnetism. Electronic and spin-torque responses can be extremely fast, while ionic motion and mechanical relaxation can be slower. The gate stack, wiring resistance, capacitance, driver strength, and measurement bandwidth add circuit time constants to the intrinsic magnetic response.

The 2019 review of electric-field control notes that electrolyte-gated devices can be constrained by sluggish ion motion and by circuit time constants. A 2021 magneto-ionic review reports optimized switching in the (sub)millisecond range for studied cobalt films, while some small magneto-ionic effects have shown sub-nanosecond responses. Those results describe different mechanisms and operating regimes; a sub-nanosecond observation for a small effect cannot be used as a general write-time specification for an ion-migration memory.
For an array, the relevant number is the complete write cycle: driver rise time, stimulus duration, magnetic settling, verification, and any recovery or reset step. A fast physical transition can still produce a slow system if the sense amplifier or power-management circuit dominates.
3. Energy is more than the voltage on the gate
Voltage modulation can reduce Joule heating in the magnetic element because it need not send a large continuous current through that layer. However, the driver still charges capacitances, leakage paths consume energy, and an external bias field or assist circuit may need power. Current-driven STT and SOT also include resistive heating in the write path and may require high current density.
For magneto-ionic control, the energy used to move ions, hold a bias, and restore a composition can differ greatly from the energy of a brief electronic pulse. A low nominal gate voltage therefore does not prove low energy per successful write. The correct comparison includes the entire write circuit, the probability of success, reset operations, and thermal management.
4. Write-error rate and endurance
Memory requires a specified probability of writing the requested state on every cycle. Near the edge of the operating window, thermal noise and device-to-device variation increase errors. A design may need larger pulses, write-verify loops, redundancy, or an external field to reach its target error rate.

Endurance is a separate requirement. Repeated current pulses can heat interfaces; repeated ion insertion can alter a material or electrode; repeated strain can stress a multilayer; and repeated magnetic cycling can expose defects. The 2019 review identifies robust magnetoelectric response, low voltage, endurance, and switching time as prerequisites for technological applications. A demonstration of reversible switching over a limited test sequence is not the same as a qualified memory lifetime.
5. Retention, volatility, and state stability
A practical designer must decide whether the magnetic state should remain after power is removed. Nonvolatile retention requires a sufficiently stable energy barrier, yet a barrier that is too high makes writing harder. Volatile logic can use a lower barrier and regain speed, but it then needs refresh or continuous power. Electric-field, magneto-ionic, and torque approaches can each be configured for different behavior; the material stack and bias conditions determine the result.
6. External fields and additional circuitry
Some switching schemes need a reference layer, a bias magnet, a current line, a charge pump, a high-voltage gate driver, or a reset path. These support elements consume area and energy and can create cross-talk. The external-field requirement identified for reviewed VCMA configurations is especially important because it changes the cell from a two-terminal voltage element into a larger system with magnetic or electrical assistance.
7. Readout and signal gain
Writing a state is not useful if the state cannot be sensed with adequate margin. The read signal must exceed noise, variation, and interference while meeting latency and power limits. Spintronic logic also needs gain: a signal should drive a following stage without progressively shrinking through a chain. A high-contrast laboratory measurement may not translate into a robust sense amplifier at array scale.
8. Integration with CMOS and manufacturing variation
Magnetic stacks add materials, interfaces, anneals, patterning steps, and thermal-budget constraints to a conventional semiconductor process. The electrical driver and sense circuit must tolerate the magnetic element’s resistance, capacitance, and switching distribution. Variation in interfaces and film thickness can change anisotropy and torque efficiency from cell to cell.

A 2024 Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering review summarizes the system-level challenge: “Spintronic logic, which encodes information using spin and magnetism, can theoretically provide an energy-efficient switch; however, it is less mature than CMOS logic and has yet to be realized at the level of a full processor system.” The gap is not a single materials problem; it includes low-voltage operation, transparent application-level benchmarks, gain, readout, and circuit architecture.

| Family | Primary control | Potential advantage | Typical practical limitation | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VCMA and electrostatic control | Voltage changes interfacial charge or anisotropy | Low-current write path and compact interfaces | Write errors, narrow operating window, and possible external bias field | Switching margin depends strongly on interface and pulse conditions |
| Strain-mediated magnetoelectric control | Voltage creates strain in an adjacent piezoelectric or ferroelectric | Can influence magnetization without sustained magnetic-layer current | Mechanical coupling, relaxation, variability, and endurance must be controlled | Stack design determines speed and reversibility |
| Magneto-ionic or electrochemical control | Voltage-driven ion motion changes composition or magnetic properties | Large, potentially nonvolatile property changes | Ion-motion speed, recovery, material stability, and cycle life | Reported times range from sub-millisecond optimized switching to much smaller, faster effects; they are not one benchmark |
| Spin-transfer torque | Spin-polarized current transfers angular momentum | Established switching physics and nonvolatile memory relevance | Current density, resistive heating, and write-energy demand | It is electrically controlled but not purely voltage-driven |
| Spin-orbit torque | Current-generated spin accumulation torques an adjacent magnet | Fast torque generation and flexible material choices | Current path, assist fields or symmetry breaking, and read/write integration | System performance depends on the complete stack and driver |
The sources establish these as useful comparison axes, but they do not provide a single, consistent numerical benchmark for speed, energy, endurance, and error rate across all families. Comparing one optimized laboratory result with another family’s full array specification would be misleading.
Why voltage-controlled magnetism is not in every memory device
A memory technology must satisfy all of the following at once:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Reliable switching across voltage, temperature, and manufacturing variation.
- A write window wide enough for an economical driver and sense scheme.
- Low error probability without excessive write-verify overhead.
- Retention appropriate to the application, with acceptable endurance.
- Read contrast and gain sufficient for dense arrays and logic chains.
- Manufacturing compatibility with the semiconductor process and thermal budget.
- A complete energy and latency advantage after drivers, bias fields, assist circuitry, and cooling are included.
Voltage control can look superior when only the magnetic-layer current is counted. Once the full cell and peripheral circuits are included, the advantage may narrow. A current-torque technology can remain preferable when its write path, readout, and qualification flow are better understood, even if its local heating is higher. Conversely, a voltage-controlled scheme may be attractive for a specialized sensor, tunable microwave element, actuator, or low-duty-cycle memory where its coupling and endurance are sufficient.
A practical evaluation checklist
When assessing a proposed device, ask these questions in order:
- What is the actual mechanism? Identify whether the stimulus changes charge, anisotropy, strain, ions, or spin angular momentum. Do not label a current-torque result as purely voltage-driven.
- What state is being switched? Specify magnetization direction, domain pattern, resistance state, skyrmion configuration, or another observable, and whether it is volatile or nonvolatile.
- What is the complete write condition? Record voltage or current, pulse width, bias field, temperature, stack dimensions, and whether a reset or assist pulse is required.
- What is the distribution, not just the best result? Look for write-error rate, operating-window width, device-to-device variation, and temperature dependence.
- What is the full-cycle energy? Include driver charging, resistive loss, bias generation, verification, and thermal management.
- How is the state read? Check signal amplitude, noise margin, latency, gain, and whether readout disturbs the state.
- What survives repeated operation? Separate reversible demonstrations from endurance data under realistic pulses and environmental conditions.
- Can it be integrated? Evaluate materials, processing temperature, array architecture, interconnect density, and compatibility with CMOS control logic.
Where the technology is most plausible
Research targets include nonvolatile memory, reconfigurable processing, magnetic and biological sensing, actuators, radio-frequency and microwave tuning, spin-diode and emitter functions, skyrmion devices, and neuromorphic components. These applications value different properties. A microwave tuner may prioritize analog range and frequency response; a memory needs error rate, retention, endurance, and density; a logic element needs gain, fan-out, and a complete circuit architecture.
That diversity explains why no single switching-time or energy figure answers whether electrically controlled magnetism is practical. The right question is whether a particular mechanism and stack meet the application’s complete system specification.
