Use no light when darkness is safe. For lighting that people genuinely need, choose the lowest practical output, mount it as low as possible, aim it downward, and use a fully shielded long-wavelength LED source. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) criteria specify a source above 560 nanometres with no wavelengths below 560 nanometres. The lamp and its glow must not be visible from the nesting beach. Interior light through windows, pool reflections and decorative lighting can also disorient hatchlings, so control those sources as well. Check the current FWC certified-lighting information and your own county or municipal code before purchasing or installing anything.

Why beachfront lighting is dangerous to hatchlings

Newly emerged sea turtles normally orient toward the brighter, open horizon over the ocean. Artificial light can draw them inland, delay their trip, expose them to predators and traffic, or leave them dehydrated. FWC sea-turtle biologist Dr. Robbin Trindell describes the consequence plainly: “Interfering with a sea turtle hatchling’s trek to the ocean can have fatal consequences.” Keeping the beach, buildings and hatchlings’ route dark is therefore the first protective measure.

The goal is not to make every property permanently dark. It is to remove light that serves no safety purpose and redesign necessary light so it is low, long-wavelength and invisible from the beach.

Use this hierarchy: darkness, then controlled lighting

1. Turn off what is not needed

Switch off decorative uplights, string lights, landscape accents, façade lighting and vacant-room lights during periods when hatchlings may be present. FWC calls turning off unnecessary lighting the simplest and most effective action. Do not disable a light that is required for safe access, security or an essential operation; replace or shield it instead.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Make necessary exterior light low and directional

Use the lowest output that satisfies the task, mount the fixture at the minimum practical height, aim it toward the ground and prevent the lamp, lens and illuminated surfaces from being seen from the beach. A fixture that looks dim from the house can still project a visible glow seaward if it is mounted high or emits sideways.

3. Specify the spectrum, not a color impression

For its wildlife-lighting source criterion, FWC specifies wavelengths greater than 560 nm and no wavelengths below 560 nm. Qualifying sources are generally described as long-wavelength amber, orange or red LEDs. A bulb that merely appears yellow, orange or warm to your eye does not prove compliance. A Kelvin or correlated color-temperature label also does not establish the required spectrum.

What “turtle-friendly” means in a bulb and fixture

Requirement What to verify Why it matters
Emitted spectrum Manufacturer documentation states greater than 560 nm and no wavelengths below 560 nm, consistent with the FWC source criterion. Visible color alone cannot reveal whether short wavelengths are present.
Light direction Downward-directed output with full shielding; no view of the glowing source from the beach. Hatchlings respond to visible glow, including light escaping through sides or the top.
Cutoff FWC’s full-cutoff definition is “no light emitting above a 90-degree plane.” Light above the horizontal plane can travel directly toward the beach and sky.
Output and mounting Lowest useful brightness and the lowest practical mounting position. Less intensity and a lower source reduce the area affected.
Certification and use Check the current FWC Wildlife Lighting Certified list and the approved conditions for the exact product and use. Certification applies to a product and its permitted application; installation can determine compliance.
Compatibility Confirm the lamp, driver, dimmer, sensor and enclosure work with the existing electrical fixture. An otherwise suitable lamp can fail if it cannot be installed with complete shielding or safe controls.

PC amber, RGB, dual-lighting-board and color-changing options do not satisfy the FWC source criterion described above. Do not treat a “bug light” label as proof either; ask for the actual spectral specification and certification status.

How to choose and install exterior fixtures

  1. Identify the task. Decide whether the light is for a doorway, stair, path, driveway or another safety need. Remove fixtures that have no necessary function.
  2. Measure the viewing problem. Stand at likely beach viewpoints, including neighboring access points, and note whether the lamp, glowing lens or illuminated wall is visible. Design for the lowest sightline, not just the view from your own yard.
  3. Select the source. Require documentation for the greater-than-560-nm spectrum with no wavelengths below 560 nm. Prefer an exact model appearing on the current FWC certified list, with its approved conditions read in full.
  4. Select the enclosure. Use a recessed, hooded or otherwise fully shielded fixture that directs light down. If an existing globe or carriage fixture sends light in every direction, replace it. Modify it only when the added shielding blocks every beach-facing angle and does not create unsafe heat or electrical conditions.
  5. Set height and output. Mount as low as practical and use the minimum brightness that provides safe visibility. Avoid high wall packs, roofline fixtures and exposed lamps.
  6. Add controls. A short-duration motion detector can limit operating time where appropriate. Set timers or photocells so the light is not left on all night without a need.
  7. Inspect after installation. At night, check from the beach and from side angles. Look for direct views of the source, spill on sand or water, and glow on walls, windows or vegetation. Re-aim, lower, shield or replace the fixture if any is visible.

Reduce light from inside the home

Exterior fixtures are only part of the problem. Bright rooms visible through beachfront windows can produce a broad, persistent glow. During periods when turtles may be nesting or hatching:

  • Close curtains, blinds or room-darkening coverings before turning on interior lights.
  • Switch off unneeded rooms and move lamps away from windows.
  • Use local glazing, tinting or covering requirements where applicable.
  • Check the building from the beach after dark; a covered window can still leak light around its edges or through adjacent doors.

These measures are especially important for upper floors, where light can be visible over vegetation and other obstructions.

Pools, landscaping and reflected glow

Pool surfaces can reflect light toward the beach, creating a cumulative glow even when no lamp points directly seaward. FWC describes locking pool lights to amber or red during nesting season and improving vegetation buffers as ways to reduce that effect. Follow the pool equipment’s instructions, confirm that the selected setting meets local rules, and inspect the reflection from the beach rather than judging it only from the pool deck.

Dense, properly maintained vegetation can interrupt sightlines. It is a supplementary measure, not permission to leave exposed or bright fixtures operating. Keep foliage from blocking a required path or creating a safety hazard, and do not rely on a seasonal buffer to make an otherwise noncompliant light acceptable.

Florida rules, seasons and local enforcement

Florida’s statutory framework directs the state Department of Environmental Protection to designate coastal areas used or likely to be used for nesting and establish guidelines for local regulation. FWC provides ordinance resources and a model ordinance, but a model is guidance rather than the code that automatically applies to every property.

FWC public information describes Florida’s nesting season as March 1 through October 31. Fort Myers Beach publishes a May 1 through October 31 local season and states that its sea-turtle ordinance applies to every property in town, not only beachfront parcels. Those different official dates show why a statewide assumption is unsafe. Before work begins, check the current county or municipal code, permit conditions and any local lighting map or enforcement guidance. Keep lights from shining onto the beach whenever turtles may be present; the biological concern is visibility and disorientation, not a universal exemption outside a calendar window.

How to evaluate products and where to buy them

You may encounter category searches such as sea turtle friendly amber LED bulb. Treat that phrase as a starting point, not a certification. Before ordering, obtain the exact model number and verify:

  • the emitted-spectrum specification, including the absence of wavelengths below 560 nm;
  • current FWC certification and the conditions attached to that certification;
  • the fixture’s cutoff and whether the glowing lens can be seen from the beach;
  • brightness, mounting height and compatibility with your wiring, controls and enclosure;
  • your local ordinance and any permit requirement.

A certified lamp installed in an open globe or aimed across the beach can still create a violation. Conversely, a shielded fixture using an attractive “amber” bulb is not automatically suitable if its spectrum has not been documented.

“I installed a red or amber bulb in an exposed fixture.”

Problem: sideways and upward emission remains visible. Fix: use a full-cutoff, downward fixture or add verified shielding that removes every beach-facing view.

“The light is motion-activated, so shielding is unnecessary.”

Problem: each activation can still disorient hatchlings, and a sensor may run longer or trigger more often than expected. Fix: combine short duration and low output with compliant spectrum and shielding.

“My neighbor’s vegetation blocks the fixture.”

Problem: leaves move, grow and may not block upper-floor or side views. Fix: test from the beach and treat vegetation as an additional buffer, not the primary control.

“The statewide dates do not include this week.”

Problem: local seasons and rules can differ, and turtles can be present outside a presumed schedule. Fix: follow the current local ordinance and keep beach-facing light controlled whenever turtles may be present.

Pre-installation checklist

  • Is the light genuinely necessary after dark?
  • Can it be turned off, dimmed or placed on a short-duration sensor?
  • Is the source documented as greater than 560 nm with no wavelengths below 560 nm?
  • Does the exact product appear on the current FWC certified list, with its use conditions?
  • Is the fixture fully shielded and downward-directed, with no emission above the 90-degree plane?
  • Is it mounted as low as practical and using the lowest useful output?
  • Can the lamp or reflected glow be seen from the beach at any angle?
  • Have windows, doors, pool lights and other interior or reflected sources been controlled?
  • Does the installation comply with the current local code and permit conditions?

The Bottom Line

The safest beachfront lighting is no lighting that is not needed. For essential illumination, use a documented long-wavelength source above 560 nm with no shorter wavelengths, a low-output fixture mounted low and aimed down, and full shielding that keeps the source and its glow invisible from the beach. Verify current FWC certification and the local ordinance before installation.
