In brief: the Sony WF-1000XM6 can use LDAC for music in Classic Audio A2DP mode, but only when the playback device also supports LDAC and the earbuds are set to Priority on Sound Quality in Sony Sound Connect. The factory High Reliability setting does not provide LDAC playback. Hi-Res capability describes what the codec and earbuds can carry; it does not guarantee that every phone, Bluetooth link, streaming service, or track will deliver a verified Hi-Res signal.

If the earbuds are using Bluetooth LE Audio instead, the codec is LC3, not LDAC. LE Audio is a separate mode that requires a compatible source and the appropriate Sound Connect connection-quality setting.

What LDAC means on the WF-1000XM6

A Bluetooth codec is the coding algorithm used to package audio for wireless transmission. In Classic Audio A2DP playback, Sony lists three codecs for the WF-1000XM6: SBC, AAC and LDAC. LDAC is Sony’s codec for transmitting high-resolution audio content over a Bluetooth connection.

Sony’s official definition is: “LDAC is an audio coding technology developed by Sony that enables the transmission of High-Resolution (Hi-Res) Audio content, even over a Bluetooth connection.” You can read the wording and the supported-codec details in the WF-1000XM6 Help Guide.

That statement describes LDAC’s transport capability. It does not mean that a normal-quality recording becomes Hi-Res, that Bluetooth is automatically lossless, or that every connection will select LDAC. The music file or stream, the source device, its codec implementation and settings, and the current radio link all remain part of the end-to-end chain.

What “approximately three times more data” actually says

Sony compares LDAC’s data capacity with SBC under specific settings. At 990 kbps and 96/48 kHz, or at 909 kbps and 88.2/44.1 kHz, Sony says LDAC can transmit approximately three times more data than SBC. Those are bitrate- and sample-rate-qualified figures from Sony Corporation’s 2026 Help Guide, not a listening-test result.

More transmitted data can preserve more information from a high-resolution source than a lower-bitrate path, but the comparison is not proof of mathematically lossless playback. It also does not predict an audible improvement for every listener, recording or environment. DSD-format content is expressly excluded from Sony’s statement that LDAC operates without down-conversion of Hi-Res Audio content.

What Hi-Res Audio means here

“Hi-Res Audio” refers to the resolution of the source and the signal path, commonly involving sample rates or bit depths above the basic CD standard. In this product context, Sony is saying that LDAC can transport qualifying Hi-Res content over Bluetooth without the down-conversion associated with SBC, subject to the conditions in its guide.

The label is therefore a capability, not a promise about your library. A track mastered at ordinary resolution, a service tier that supplies a lossy stream, or a source device that falls back to another codec cannot be made Hi-Res merely by owning WF-1000XM6 earbuds. To establish what you are actually hearing, verify the source file or service’s format and the codec selected by the source device.

Sony’s regional WF-1000XM6 specifications provide the model’s published supported-format information. Because specifications and software behavior can vary by market and device firmware, use the documentation for your own playback device before treating a particular phone or computer as LDAC-compatible.

Everything required for LDAC playback

  • WF-1000XM6 earbuds: LDAC is supported for music in Classic Audio A2DP mode.
  • An LDAC-capable source: the phone, tablet, computer or player must implement LDAC. Headphone support alone is insufficient.
  • The correct Sound Connect mode: Bluetooth Connection Quality must be set to Priority on Sound Quality. Sony says the out-of-box High Reliability choice does not support LDAC playback.
  • A qualifying source: the recording or stream must itself contain the quality you want to preserve. LDAC transports audio; it does not upgrade an ordinary or lossy source.

The source device may also expose its own codec selector. Sony advises consulting that device’s instructions and choosing LDAC when the operating system or manufacturer provides such a control. The official broader manual is available as the WF-1000XM6 Help Guide PDF.

How to turn on LDAC

  1. Pair the earbuds normally. Complete Bluetooth pairing between the WF-1000XM6 and the source device you will use for music.
  2. Open Sony Sound Connect. Select the WF-1000XM6 so its device controls are displayed.
  3. Change Bluetooth Connection Quality. Set the control to Priority on Sound Quality. Do not leave it on High Reliability if you need LDAC; Sony identifies that factory setting as incompatible with LDAC playback.
  4. Set the source codec if necessary. Some playback devices select a codec automatically, while others provide a developer, Bluetooth or audio setting. Follow the source manufacturer’s current instructions and select LDAC where it is offered.
  5. Start playback and verify the source. Use a file or service tier that actually supplies the resolution you intend to hear. A “Hi-Res” label on the earbuds alone cannot verify the stream.
  6. Recheck after changes. Switching devices, enabling LE Audio, changing connection-quality modes or updating firmware can alter the active Bluetooth path. Confirm the settings again before diagnosing a sound-quality difference.

Classic Audio LDAC versus LE Audio LC3

The two modes use different Bluetooth audio systems. Selecting one does not silently turn the other into LDAC: the source connection and the mode chosen by the devices determine the codec.

Characteristic Classic Audio with LDAC LE Audio with LC3
Bluetooth audio framework Classic Audio A2DP Bluetooth LE Audio
WF-1000XM6 codec listed by Sony LDAC (also SBC and AAC are listed for Classic Audio) LC3
Source requirement A source device that supports LDAC; the source may need its codec setting changed A source device compatible with LE Audio
Sound Connect connection-quality choice Priority on Sound Quality Low latency
Primary use in this question Transmitting compatible Hi-Res content over a Bluetooth connection LE Audio playback using the LC3 codec

These settings are not interchangeable. If the source establishes an LE Audio connection, the active codec is LC3 even though the earbuds also support LDAC in Classic Audio. Conversely, setting Priority on Sound Quality does not make an LE Audio-only source support LDAC.

Why an LDAC-capable phone may still not use LDAC

Codec negotiation happens between both ends of the Bluetooth link. A source can support LDAC in its specifications yet choose another codec because of its current Bluetooth profile, operating-system policy, connection mode or user setting. The WF-1000XM6 cannot force LDAC when the source does not offer it.

There is no complete, current model-by-model compatibility list in Sony’s reviewed WF-1000XM6 material. Avoid assuming that a named phone, computer or adapter works simply because it is modern or advertises “Hi-Res.” Check the exact model’s current manufacturer documentation, including whether LDAC is available for the platform and Bluetooth profile you plan to use.

Sony’s guide notes that AAC is mainly used in Apple products such as iPhone, but the guide does not constitute a comprehensive current iPhone or computer codec table. Treat any platform-specific claim as something to verify against that platform’s own documentation rather than as a property of the earbuds alone.

Troubleshooting: “Cannot play audio with the LDAC codec”

LDAC is unavailable in Sound Connect

  • Confirm that the connected device is the WF-1000XM6 and that music is using Classic Audio rather than LE Audio.
  • Open Bluetooth Connection Quality and choose Priority on Sound Quality. The High Reliability setting blocks LDAC playback according to Sony.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the earbuds after changing the setting, then check the source device’s Bluetooth details again.

The source keeps selecting SBC or AAC

  • Verify that the source device actually supports LDAC; the earbuds cannot add codec support to a source.
  • Look for a codec selector in the source’s Bluetooth or audio settings and follow its manufacturer instructions.
  • Check whether the source has connected in LE Audio. If so, LC3 is the expected codec for that connection, not LDAC.

LDAC drops out or becomes unreliable

LDAC can use a higher data rate than SBC, so a difficult radio environment may make a reliability-oriented setting preferable. If uninterrupted playback matters more than the highest available codec data rate, use the connection-quality choice that keeps the link stable. Switching away from Priority on Sound Quality also means giving up LDAC playback until you select it again.

The music does not sound different

First check the source material and confirm the active codec; an ordinary-resolution or already-lossy stream may not reveal a difference. Sony’s “approximately three times more data” figure is a transmission comparison, not an audible-improvement guarantee. Fit, noise, the recording’s mastering and your listening environment can matter more than a codec label.

How to think about LDAC in everyday use

Choose LDAC when source quality is the priority

LDAC is most relevant when you have a verified high-resolution file or service stream, an LDAC-capable source and a radio environment where the higher-data-rate connection remains stable. In that situation, Priority on Sound Quality gives the WF-1000XM6 the mode Sony associates with LDAC.

Choose reliability when continuity matters more

If you are moving through a congested wireless environment, experiencing dropouts or using a source whose content is not high resolution, a stable connection may be the better practical choice. The earbuds’ High Reliability setting is designed for that trade-off, but it does not support LDAC playback.

Do not confuse marketing labels with the active signal

“Hi-Res Audio,” “LDAC,” and a high sample-rate file describe different parts of the system. The file describes the source; LDAC describes one possible Bluetooth transport; the active codec and connection mode describe what is actually negotiated. You need all of those pieces aligned before the Hi-Res-over-Bluetooth claim applies to a particular listening session.

Bottom line on WF-1000XM6 LDAC support

The WF-1000XM6 supports LDAC for Classic Audio A2DP music, and Sony describes LDAC as capable of transmitting Hi-Res Audio content over Bluetooth. To use it, both the source and earbuds must support the codec, Sound Connect must be set to Priority on Sound Quality, and the source must contain genuinely qualifying audio. High Reliability disables LDAC; LE Audio uses LC3 instead. Sony’s bitrate comparison shows greater data capacity than SBC under specified conditions, not guaranteed lossless playback or a guaranteed audible improvement.
