Tell the model explicitly which language to use for its answer, and include the original user question in the generation prompt. The instruction itself does not have to be in the target language: choose a language the model follows reliably, then test that choice with your model, language pair, and retrieved material.

Separate the languages in your RAG pipeline

A retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system brings together a user request, retrieved passages, and instructions supplied to a language model. Those elements can use different languages, so decide separately what language to use for retrieval, what language to use for the instruction, and what language the final answer must use.

For answer generation, explicitly state the desired output language and keep the original user question in the context. A practical starting instruction is:

Use the supplied sources to answer the original question. Write the final answer in [TARGET LANGUAGE]. Preserve names and technical terms when translation would reduce accuracy. If the sources do not support an answer, say so.

This is a starting point, not a universally validated prompt. Select the instruction language based on what your chosen model follows reliably; available evidence does not establish that prompts must always be written in the answer language.

Translate for retrieval without replacing the original question

If the user’s question and your corpus use different languages, query translation can be a retrieval preprocessing step. Microsoft Azure Architecture Center guidance allows translation before the query is included in the prompt, while advising that the original query still be sent to the language model for answer generation (Microsoft’s RAG prompt-engineering guidance).

This keeps two jobs distinct: a translated query may help search the corpus, while the original wording preserves what the user actually asked. Whether translation improves results depends on your retriever and language pair; test relevance rather than assuming it will.

Why explicit language instructions are not enough

A multilingual retriever or generator does not guarantee that the system will retrieve the right evidence, reason correctly across languages, or answer in the requested language. The XRAG benchmark reports response-language correctness challenges with monolingual retrieval and cross-language reasoning challenges with multilingual retrieval (XRAG: Cross-lingual Retrieval-Augmented Generation). A 2024 multilingual RAG study likewise concludes that task-specific prompt engineering is needed to generate in user languages, even when multilingual retrievers and generators are available (Retrieval-augmented generation in multilingual settings).

Language drift is another failure mode: a system may answer in a language other than the one requested. A 2026 AAAI paper reports English as a frequent fallback in its cross-lingual experiments and proposes a decoding-time method to address drift; that finding is specific to the paper’s experiments, not a prediction for every system (Language Drift in Multilingual RAG).

Evaluate retrieval, reasoning, and answer language separately

Do not treat a fluent answer in the requested language as proof that the full pipeline worked. Evaluate distinct outcomes using the actual language combinations, domain, and retrieved passages your deployment will use:

  • Retrieval relevance: Does the query retrieve passages that answer the question across the query and document languages?
  • Evidence use across languages: Does the model correctly use relevant passages written in a different language from the question or answer?
  • Answer-language correctness: Does the final response consistently use the requested language, including when examples or retrieved passages use another language?
  • Distractor handling: Does the model stay focused on relevant evidence when irrelevant passages appear in multiple languages?
  • Operational trade-offs: Does translation add latency or complexity, and does testing cover the language pairs and subject areas that matter to you?

These are meaningful separate checks: a 2025 ACL evaluation assesses consistent use of relevant passages regardless of language, output in the expected language, and focus on relevant passages among multilingual distractors (On the Consistency of Multilingual Context Utilization in RAG). Cross-lingual research also proposes separating language-controllable retrieval from language-agnostic reasoning to address query-language sensitivity and preference for surface language forms (Breaking Language Preference in Multilingual RAG).

Choose a setup for the languages and model you actually support

There is no single configuration established as best across retrieval relevance, cross-language reasoning, output consistency, latency, and language coverage. The appropriate setup depends on the model’s instruction-following behavior, the language pair, corpus distribution, retriever, and deployment constraints.

Test prompts under the real combinations of user-query language, retrieved-passage language, examples, and target answer language. Re-run those checks after changing the model version, retriever, translation component, or supported languages. A prompt that works for one combination may still drift or retrieve poorly under another.
