Choose the Kobalt platform that matches the job, your yard and the batteries you already own—not the higher voltage by itself. Kobalt’s 24V and 40V ranges overlap in handheld equipment such as string trimmers, blowers and chainsaws. The 40V outdoor-equipment line also includes mowers. A particular Gen4 40V mower is advertised by Kobalt for flat areas of up to 0.5 acres on one charge, but that is a manufacturer claim for that configuration, not an independent test or a guarantee for every lawn.

Before buying, identify the exact model, battery capacity, kit contents, weight and manual-confirmed compatibility. The 24V and 40V batteries should not be assumed interchangeable.

At a glance: which platform fits which work?

Both voltage families can cover routine residential maintenance, but they are not simply two power levels of one interchangeable system. The right choice depends on the tool and workload you are actually buying for.

What Kobalt 24V tools are best for

Targeted handheld maintenance

A 24V tool makes the most sense when the exact model’s documented capability matches a clearly defined job: trimming lawn edges, clearing leaves from a patio, cutting small branches or shaping a hedge. If your household already has 24V batteries and chargers, staying on that platform can avoid buying another charging system. That convenience matters only if the existing batteries are approved for the new tool and still have enough capacity for the workload.

String trimming and edging

Use a 24V trimmer when you need to maintain grass around beds, fences, posts and walkways rather than cut an entire lawn. Compare the model’s stated cutting width, shaft design, head adjustment, weight and runtime guidance. A narrow or lighter trimmer may be easier around obstacles; a wider head can cover open edges faster but may consume more energy. The voltage label alone does not tell you which design is present.

Light blowing

A 24V blower is suited to jobs such as clearing clippings from a driveway, porch or small patio when the model’s airflow specification and battery capacity are adequate. Look for the manufacturer’s airflow or air-speed figures for the exact model, and consider whether you will move damp leaves or only dry debris. The available material does not establish a universal 24V airflow rating, so do not infer one from the platform name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pruning and small cutting jobs

For a 24V chainsaw or hedge trimmer, judge the individual tool by its bar length or cutting capacity, trigger and guard design, weight and the branch or hedge size allowed in the manual. A compact saw may be practical for occasional pruning; it is not automatically appropriate for larger logs or continuous clearing. The same caution applies to hedge trimmers: blade length and tooth spacing determine what the tool can handle, not voltage alone.

When a 24V mower might make sense

A 24V mower appears in one Kobalt-branded search-result listing, but current model availability, deck width, battery arrangement and coverage were not established. Treat it as a model-specific purchase. Verify whether the kit includes one battery or multiple batteries, the approved battery capacity, the stated lawn area and the conditions behind that estimate. Do not assume the 24V platform is intended for every lawn size simply because a mower is listed.

What Kobalt 40V tools are best for

Routine mowing with a cordless platform

The clearest 40V use case is a Kobalt cordless mower. Kobalt’s Gen4 40V mower overview says it handles “up to 0.5 acres on a single charge” on flat areas. That wording describes a manufacturer’s claim for a particular configuration; slope, grass height, moisture, cutting height, blade condition, temperature and battery capacity can change actual coverage. Use the figure as an upper-bound shopping reference, not a promised result.

For a mower, confirm the deck or cutting width, whether the kit uses one or more batteries, the battery amp-hour rating, charge time guidance, mower weight, height-adjustment range, collection or mulching equipment and the manual’s recommended lawn conditions. A wider deck may reduce passes, while a heavier machine can be harder to maneuver on slopes or through gates. None of those specifications can be inferred from “40V.”

Trimming, edging and blowing alongside the mower

The 40V line is presented as an outdoor-equipment platform covering mowers, string trimmers, blowers and chainsaws. It can therefore suit a household that wants one outdoor-tool family centered on mowing and supplemented by handheld equipment. Confirm that each tool is sold for the same battery platform and that the battery you plan to share is listed in each manual. A charger supplied with a mower kit may not be included with a bare tool, so compare complete kit contents rather than tool-only prices.

Chainsaw and pole-saw work

A 40V chainsaw or pole saw may be a sensible choice when you need more than occasional twig trimming, but the exact bar length, chain type, oiling system, reach and permitted material remain model-specific. The historical Lowe’s announcement named a pole saw and chainsaw; it does not establish that those exact products or specifications are still sold. Use the current manual to determine branch limits and required protective equipment.

Hedge maintenance

The 40V lineup announced by Lowe’s included a hedge trimmer. For current buying decisions, compare blade length, tooth spacing, handle adjustment, weight and the manual’s maximum material diameter. A longer blade can cover a hedge face quickly but may feel less nimble in tight spaces. If you already own a 24V hedge trimmer, moving to 40V is not automatically an upgrade; compare the actual models and your cutting workload.

Why voltage is not a complete performance rating

Voltage identifies the battery platform’s nominal electrical class. It does not by itself specify motor output, blade speed, airflow, cutting width, bar length, battery capacity or runtime. Two tools with the same voltage can have very different motors, controls, weights and intended workloads.

  • Battery capacity: Amp-hours and the number of batteries supplied affect how long a tool can operate, but the available material does not provide a single runtime figure that applies across the platforms.
  • Tool design: Deck width, trimmer head, blower tube, chainsaw bar and blade geometry can matter more to the job than the nominal voltage.
  • Conditions: Thick or wet grass, steep ground, heavy leaves and large branches increase demand compared with light, dry maintenance.
  • Ergonomics: Battery and tool weight influence control and fatigue, especially for hedge trimming, blowing and work above shoulder height.
  • Kit configuration: A bare tool, a kit with one battery and a kit with multiple batteries are materially different purchases.

The available sources do not establish a complete current catalog or an independently tested winner between 24V and 40V. A model-by-model comparison is the only sound way to make a performance claim.

Battery compatibility: the check that prevents an expensive mistake

Do not slide a 24V battery into a 40V tool, or a 40V battery into a 24V tool, on the assumption that the connector will fit. Kobalt guidance says to match the battery voltage platform to the tool and to confirm compatibility in the manual. Physical fit, if present, is not proof of electrical approval.

  1. Read the exact tool model number from the listing, carton or nameplate.
  2. Open that model’s current manual and find the approved battery and charger references.
  3. Check the battery label for its platform voltage and model number, not just its capacity or color.
  4. Verify whether the tool requires one battery, two batteries or a particular capacity range.
  5. Confirm that the charger is approved for that battery and that the kit actually includes it.
  6. Keep a record of which batteries are assigned to each platform so a shared charging area does not lead to a mix-up.

If the manual and retailer listing disagree, treat the manual’s compatibility information as the controlling reference and seek clarification before using the tool.

A practical buying process

1. Define the job in measurable terms

Write down the lawn area, whether it is flat or sloped, the grass height and density, the amount of edging, the volume and type of leaves, and the largest branches or hedge material you expect to cut. “Yard work” is too broad to select a tool responsibly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Decide whether you are adding to an existing battery family

List every battery and charger you already own, including its platform voltage, model number and capacity. Staying with an existing platform can reduce duplicate chargers and spare-battery costs, but only if the new tool’s manual approves those batteries.

3. Compare complete kits, not headline tool prices

Record the tool-only price, battery count, battery capacity, charger, warranty terms and availability for each exact model. A less expensive bare tool may cost more after adding the battery and charger needed for your workload. Current prices and availability were not established in the available material, so check the retailer listing on the day you buy.

4. Match physical specifications to the space

For mowers, compare cutting width and weight. For trimmers and hedge trimmers, compare head or blade length, adjustment range and balance. For blowers, compare the stated airflow information. For chainsaws and pole saws, compare bar length, reach and the manual’s permitted material. Record values from the same model year and configuration; platform-level averages are not meaningful.

5. Plan for the worst normal session

Estimate the longest mowing, trimming or cleanup session you routinely perform, including travel between areas and pauses. Then check the model’s stated runtime guidance and whether a spare approved battery is available. Do not convert the 0.5-acre mower claim into a guaranteed runtime for another mower, another battery or a different lawn condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Read the safety and maintenance sections before purchase

Confirm required protective equipment, charging instructions, storage limits, chain or blade maintenance and any restrictions on wet conditions or slopes. A tool that technically covers the task may still be a poor choice if its weight or handling is unsuitable for you.

Choosing by common yard scenarios

You already own several 24V batteries

Start with compatible 24V handheld tools whose manuals match your batteries and whose specifications fit the work. Consider 40V only when you need a specific 40V product, such as a mower configuration, or when the exact 40V tool offers a better fit after accounting for the new batteries and charger.

You are starting from zero and need a mower plus handheld tools

Compare a complete 40V mower kit with the handheld tools you expect to add. The 40V platform’s documented inclusion of mowers makes it a logical starting point for that combination, but verify current availability and whether batteries can be shared across the exact models. A 24V mower listing alone is not evidence that the 24V ecosystem will cover your lawn or provide the same kit choices.

You maintain a small, obstacle-filled yard

Prioritize tool weight, balance, head adjustment and battery convenience. A compact 24V handheld tool may be easier to carry around beds, fences and steps if its documented cutting or blowing capability is sufficient. Do not choose it solely because the yard is small; dense growth and long sessions can still demand a different model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You have a large or demanding lawn

Look first at mower coverage claims, battery capacity, the number of batteries supplied and the terrain. The 0.5-acre statement applies to a particular Gen4 40V mower and flat-area conditions; it should not be extended to larger, sloped or rough lawns without model-specific evidence. You may need to plan charging breaks or additional approved batteries.

Recall and safety check for USB-C battery tools

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall involving specified Greenworks-made Kobalt 24V and 48V yard tools used with USB-C batteries because of a fire hazard. The notice identifies affected product and battery numbers and describes a remedy involving replacement batteries and related materials.

This does not mean that every Kobalt 24V or 40V product is recalled. Before using or buying a used tool, compare the exact tool and battery identifiers with the official CPSC notice. If they match, stop using the affected combination and follow the notice’s remedy and disposal or replacement directions. Do not substitute an unapproved battery to bypass the issue.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by voltage alone

Problem: Assuming 40V is always better or that 24V is always underpowered.

Fix: Compare the exact task, battery capacity, tool design, weight and manual specifications.

Assuming the platforms share batteries

Problem: Treating a matching connector or brand name as proof of compatibility.

Fix: Verify the voltage platform and model numbers in the manual for both tool and battery.

A decision checklist

  • What exact task will the tool perform, and how often?
  • What are the area, terrain and material conditions?
  • Which batteries and chargers do you already own?
  • Does the manual explicitly approve those batteries?
  • What battery capacity and number of batteries are included?
  • What are the exact weight, cutting width, airflow, bar length or reach figures?
  • What runtime or coverage guidance applies to this model and configuration?
  • Is the listing current, and are replacement batteries available?
  • Have the tool and battery identifiers been checked against the CPSC recall?

Bottom line

Choose a Kobalt 24V tool when a specific handheld model fits your maintenance work or when you already have compatible 24V batteries. Choose the 40V platform when you need a Kobalt mower or want an outdoor-equipment family that includes mowers and handheld tools. In either case, the exact model, battery capacity, kit contents, ergonomics, yard conditions and manual-confirmed compatibility matter more than the voltage number. The available evidence supports use-case guidance, not a universal 24V-versus-40V performance winner.
