I Am Plague is an incremental roguelite with automatic, build-driven combat. You do not manually steer each rat attack; instead, you shape a growing horde by choosing mutations, developing stats, combining abilities, and selecting routes through an underground fortress. When a run ends, the flesh and skulls you collected can permanently improve future attempts. Steam formally lists it as an Indie game and uses the tags Incremental, Roguelite, Auto Battler, and Dungeon Crawler. That makes “incremental roguelite autobattler” the most useful short description.
What kind of game is I Am Plague?
The Steam listing describes I Am Plague as “an incremental game with automatic combat and roguelite elements.” Those terms describe three connected parts of its design:
- Incremental: your horde grows through repeated upgrades and persistent improvements rather than relying only on one successful run.
- Roguelite: each expedition involves temporary choices, risk, and defeat, while some progress carries back to the next attempt.
- Autobattler: the rats fight automatically, so your main job is to assemble a build that can survive the enemies and bosses ahead.
The game is not a conventional action title in which you aim every attack or issue moment-to-moment movement commands. It is also not passive: mutation selection, stat development, route planning, and spending between runs determine how the automatic battles play out.
How does automatic combat work?
When the horde enters a battle, its mutations and abilities determine what it can do. The encounter resolves through that build rather than through direct control of every strike. A strong combination can clear enemies efficiently, while a poorly developed or badly matched setup can fail even when the player is watching the entire fight.

Automatic combat therefore shifts attention from reflexes to preparation. Before and between encounters, you decide which effects to add, which statistics to improve, and whether a dangerous route is worth taking for its potential reward. The official description from publisher Digital Vortex Entertainment summarizes the intended balance: “combat happens automatically, but the choices that shape your horde are yours.”
This is best understood as build-driven combat, not as combat without agency. You influence the conditions under which the battle runs, then learn from the result when a run succeeds or ends.
How do mutations and synergies shape a run?
Choose one mutation from three
On each floor, the game presents a choice of three mutations. You select the option that best fits the current horde, the threats you expect, or a longer-term combination you are trying to assemble. Shops can offer additional mutations, giving certain routes or resource decisions extra value.

Selecting the same mutation again does not merely duplicate an effect. Repeated selections strengthen that mutation, creating a reason to commit to a focused build rather than collecting unrelated bonuses. The practical decision is whether to reinforce a reliable effect or take a different mutation that covers a weakness.
Look for combinations, not isolated bonuses
Mutations can combine into synergies. A choice that appears modest on its own may become valuable when it supports another effect in the build. Because the horde fights without manual attack commands, these interactions are a major way to create a distinct strategy: you are designing the rules and priorities that the rats will use automatically.

The available official material does not specify every mutation’s exact numerical effect. Treat the system as a framework for experimentation rather than assuming that a particular combination is guaranteed to be optimal.
Which stats can you develop?

What do route choices add to the roguelite structure?
The fortress is not presented as a single fixed line. At forks, you choose which route to follow, weighing possible danger against possible reward. A safer path may help preserve a run, while a more hazardous branch may offer better opportunities for mutations, resources, or other advantages.
The planned full game also includes branching routes and text-based events. That suggests route selection will involve more than choosing between two combat rooms: an event can present a decision whose result changes the run, although the official materials do not yet document every event or its outcomes.

Route planning matters because an automatic battle gives you no emergency attack button to rescue a bad matchup. You must account for the horde’s current health, its defensive coverage, the strength of its synergies, and the value of the reward before committing to a branch.
How does permanent progression work after defeat?
A run produces resources even when it ends unsuccessfully. As the horde climbs, it collects flesh and skulls in the fortress. Back in the lair, those resources can be spent through two permanent-progression systems:
- Tree of Flesh: permanent improvements to base stats.
- Tree of Bones: permanent improvements and unlocks for mutations that can appear in later runs.
This separation gives defeat a useful outcome. A failed expedition can still increase the horde’s baseline strength or expand the pool of future mutation choices. Later attempts therefore begin with more possibilities than the first, while the run itself still requires temporary decisions and adaptation.
Permanent progression does not mean every future run is automatically won. It changes the starting position and the available build options; route choices, mutation synergies, and battle results still determine what happens in the fortress.
What is the story and setting?
I Am Plague follows a colony of rats living beneath a grand capital. The horde is trying to reach the surface by climbing an underground fortress, where it encounters human defenders and supernatural enemies. The premise also hints at a prophecy and an approaching apocalypse.

- Define a direction. Use the first mutation choices to establish an offensive, defensive, speed-focused, or hybrid plan.
- Check for synergy. When a familiar mutation appears, compare the value of strengthening it with the value of filling a gap in the build.
- Spend for the current threat. Use stat development to address the weakness that is most likely to end the run, rather than automatically raising one favorite statistic.
- Evaluate each fork. Consider the horde’s present condition and the reward promised by a dangerous branch before choosing a route.
- Use defeat as information. After a failed run, identify whether damage, durability, route risk, or an incompatible mutation plan caused the loss, then invest permanent resources accordingly.
This loop is why the game fits the incremental roguelite label: the run is temporary, but its decisions inform the next attempt and its collected resources improve the long-term progression system.
Who is the game likely to suit?
I Am Plague should appeal to players who enjoy watching a build mature, comparing upgrade options, and making risk-and-reward decisions without manually controlling every attack. It is a less natural fit for someone seeking a conventional action game with direct movement, aiming, or real-time ability timing as the central challenge.
When comparing it with another title, the useful questions are how much combat is automatic, how many choices come from stacked upgrades and synergies, how strongly routes affect risk and reward, and how much progress survives between runs.
