A fast-spinning asteroid stays intact when the forces binding its material together can withstand the outward stresses produced by rotation. In a large body, self-gravity usually supplies most of that binding. Smaller asteroids may also depend on friction between rocks, weak cohesion between fine grains, or the tensile strength of solid and fractured rock. If rotational stress becomes greater than those forces, the asteroid can first suffer landslides and shed dust, then lose larger pieces or disrupt completely.
Rotation is a contest between outward stress and binding forces
Every rotating body experiences an effective outward, or centrifugal, tendency. The faster the spin and the farther a piece of material is from the rotation axis, the harder it is for that piece to remain on the body. An asteroid does not need to be perfectly spherical for this to matter: tips, ridges and equatorial regions can experience different stresses because their distances and directions relative to the spin axis differ.
Binding forces push the other way. Gravity pulls every fragment toward the combined center of mass. Friction resists sliding where rocks press against one another. Fine dust can develop weak electrostatic and van der Waals attractions, and a monolithic or fractured rock can carry tensile and shear stresses through its mineral structure. Stability is therefore not set by spin rate alone; it depends on size, shape, density, porosity, internal architecture and material properties.

Why many asteroids are called rubble piles
A rubble-pile asteroid is an aggregate of rocks and fragments with voids between them rather than one continuous block. The 2018 review “Rubble Pile Asteroids” in the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics says the label is typically applied to objects roughly 200 metres to less than about 10 kilometres across. It summarizes evidence that nearly every object in that approximate range is bound primarily by self-gravity and has substantial internal porosity.
Those interiors are usually inferred from measurements such as density, spin, shape and spacecraft observations rather than seen directly throughout the body. A rubble pile can therefore be mechanically coherent without being a solid stone. Its particles press together under the body’s own gravity, and friction at those contacts can prevent wholesale sliding. The empty space also means that the average density can be much lower than the density of the constituent rock.
Gravity in a rubble pile
Gravity is weak on an asteroid compared with Earth, but it acts across the entire mass. For a sufficiently large aggregate, that collective attraction keeps fragments in orbit around the body’s center rather than allowing them to drift away. Increasing size increases the total gravitational pull and generally makes gravity more important than grain-scale forces.
Friction between fragments
Fragments in contact do not slide freely. Their rough surfaces interlock, and the normal pressure between them creates friction. This friction can support slopes and transmit loads through a loose interior. It is not unlimited: repeated shaking, landslides or rapid spin can rearrange the contacts and reduce the angle a surface can sustain.

Four kinds of strength can contribute
Self-gravity
For large rubble piles, self-gravity is normally the dominant binding mechanism. The NASA history A History of Near-Earth Object Research describes Keith Holsapple’s 2007 conclusion that, above about 10 kilometres, permissible spin is governed mainly by gravity rather than tensile or cohesive strength. That is a size-dependent statement, not a universal cutoff with a sharp physical edge.
Contact friction and interlocking
Friction lets a gravity-bound aggregate tolerate more rotation than a collection of perfectly smooth, frictionless beads. It can delay surface movement and internal shear, but it cannot substitute indefinitely for gravity. As spin rises, the effective load on surface contacts falls, making grains easier to mobilize.
Grain-scale cohesion
Very fine particles can adhere through van der Waals forces. The attraction is tiny for one contact, yet a large number of contacts can matter in a small, porous body. The same NASA history discusses this proposed mechanism for rapidly rotating small fragments.

A 2014 model by Sánchez and Scheeres estimates reasonable cohesive strengths below 25 pascals for its modeled regolith arrangement and emphasizes that grain-size distributions remain an unresolved factor. The estimate is model-dependent, not a measured universal value for all asteroids. The paper is “The strength of regolith and rubble pile asteroids”.

Rock strength
A continuous or heavily fractured rock body can carry tensile and shear stresses through its material. This is why a small monolithic asteroid can spin faster than a comparable cohesionless rubble pile. Strength becomes progressively less decisive as an asteroid grows and its gravity-generated stresses dominate.
The “two-hour” spin barrier is a rule of thumb, not a law
A frequently cited rubble-pile limit is a rotation period of roughly 2.2 hours. In the NASA research history’s discussion of Holsapple, small asteroids with modest tensile strength can exceed that approximate limit, while larger gravity-dominated bodies cannot do so without losing material. The period is therefore a population-level shorthand for many rubble piles, not a hard boundary that applies to every composition, shape or size.
Shape changes the local stress. NASA/JPL’s summary of an observational study reports that very elongated asteroids in that sample were not seen rotating faster than once every four hours, whereas more spherical objects could rotate as fast as once every 2.3 hours. These are findings from that study, not universal thresholds. An elongated body has weaker effective gravity at its ends and can begin shedding there before a rounder body at the same period.
Astronomer Peter Hammergren explained the structural distinction on the NASA/JPL page: “Solid asteroids can rotate as fast as they want and still hold together, but if rubble piles rotate too fast, they’ll fly to pieces,” he said. “It makes sense that more elongated asteroids, which have weaker gravity on their ends, would be even more prone to break up.” The statement captures the contrast, but it does not replace a calculation for a particular asteroid.

How size and structure change the outcome
| Asteroid case | Main resistance to spin-driven failure | What the evidence indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Above about 10 km | Self-gravity | NASA’s discussion of Holsapple (2007) says gravity governs permissible spin more than tensile or cohesive strength. |
| About 200 m to less than 10 km, typical rubble-pile range | Self-gravity, with friction and possible grain cohesion | The 2018 Annual Review says nearly every object in this range is primarily gravity-bound and notably porous. |
| Below a few kilometres with modest tensile strength | Gravity plus material strength | Such bodies can exceed the approximately 2.2-hour rubble-pile limit described in NASA’s research history. |
| Small, cohesion-supported aggregate | Gravity, friction and grain-scale attraction | Fine-regolith cohesion is a proposed contribution; a 2014 model gives reasonable strengths below 25 Pa for its modeled case. |
| Solid or strongly cemented rock | Intrinsic tensile and shear strength | Material strength can permit substantially faster rotation than a cohesionless aggregate of similar size. |
1950 DA shows why gravity and friction may not be enough
Asteroid (29075) 1950 DA is a kilometre-scale rubble pile whose observed rotation is faster than the breakup limit calculated from gravity and friction alone. In the 2014 Nature study “Cohesive forces prevent the rotational breakup of rubble-pile asteroid (29075) 1950 DA”, Rozitis, MacLennan and Emery conclude that cohesive forces between particles are needed to prevent mass shedding and structural failure.
The authors compare the inferred cohesion with forces between grains in lunar regolith, while noting that the asteroid’s required values are somewhat lower. This case is an explicit warning against saying that gravity always holds a rubble pile together. It also does not show that van der Waals attraction explains every fast rotator: the effect depends on grain size, contact area, packing and the body’s overall structure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Spin can increase gradually through the YORP effect
An asteroid does not have to receive a sudden impact to become unstable. Sunlight absorbed by its surface is later emitted as infrared radiation. If the asteroid’s shape and surface properties make that emission uneven, the escaping radiation produces a small net torque. NASA calls this the YORP effect, and repeated torques can change the spin over time.

Gault: activity near a critical period
NASA’s 2019 report “Hubble Watches Spun-up Asteroid Coming Apart” describes asteroid Gault. Follow-up observations measured a two-hour rotation period, close to the critical speed discussed for a loose rubble pile. Centrifugal effects destabilized the surface, and landslides may have sent dust and rubble away.
Gault demonstrates the difference between surface activity and total destruction. A two-hour period did not instantly vaporize the asteroid; it was associated with observable mass loss near a critical condition. Other asteroids at a similar period could behave differently because their shape, size, cohesion and internal arrangement differ.
What failure looks like as spin rises
- Contact unloading: Effective gravity decreases at vulnerable surface locations, so rocks press less firmly against their neighbors.
- Surface motion: A slope can undergo a landslide, and loose grains can migrate toward the equator or escape into orbit.
- Mass shedding: Dust, pebbles or boulders leave the body. Losing material can alter the shape and spin, sometimes changing the subsequent stability.
- Internal deformation: If stresses penetrate the interior, fractures can widen, blocks can rearrange and the aggregate can become more elongated or porous.
- Disruption: Once the remaining gravity, friction, cohesion and rock strength cannot carry the rotational load, the body can separate into multiple components.
These stages are not guaranteed to occur in this exact order. A strong monolith may fracture before shedding loose grains, while a weak rubble pile may lose surface dust for a long time without catastrophic breakup.
How scientists assess whether a fast rotator is stable
A meaningful stability assessment combines several measurements rather than comparing one period with a fixed limit.
- Spin period: Determine how quickly the asteroid rotates and whether the rate is changing.
- Shape: Identify elongation, equatorial bulges, sharp ends and other locations where effective gravity may be weakest.
- Size and density: Estimate mass and bulk density; these control the strength of self-gravity.
- Internal structure: Distinguish a solid or fractured body from a porous rubble pile when observations allow.
- Surface and grain properties: Consider roughness, regolith depth and whether fine grains could provide cohesion.
- Strength assumptions: Use tensile, shear or cohesive values appropriate to the proposed material model, and report whether they are measured or inferred.
- Observed activity: Look for dust tails, changing light curves, landslide signatures or companions that indicate mass shedding.
The result is a range of plausible behaviors, not a single universal “safe” period. A nearly spherical, cohesive small asteroid and an elongated, porous rubble pile can have very different failure thresholds even when their measured spin periods match.
Bottom line: fast spin is survivable when the binding budget is large enough
Self-gravity is the foundation for most midsized rubble piles, friction adds resistance at rock contacts, fine-grain cohesion can help selected small bodies, and intrinsic rock strength can dominate in solid asteroids. Rotation wins only when its stresses exceed that combined budget. The approximate two-hour barrier highlights where many loose aggregates begin to shed material, but shape, size and composition decide whether an individual asteroid merely slides at the surface, loses mass gradually or breaks apart.
