Judges usually reward microscopy videos that make a real scientific observation understandable, present it with originality and visual discipline, meet a high technical standard, and explain exactly how the footage was made. The recurring dimensions are scientific or informational value, creativity, technical quality, visual impact, and caption quality—but competitions define and emphasize them differently.
There is no universal percentage scorecard. Before submitting, read the current rules for the specific contest, then shape the clip, caption, processing disclosure, file format, and permissions to that competition’s requirements.
The five qualities that recur across published judging criteria
Official guidance from the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), Nikon Small World in Motion, and the NUS Centre for Bioimaging Sciences identifies a consistent set of expectations. The wording varies, and the criteria are not presented as a universal ranking, but these are the dimensions an entrant should deliberately address.

These categories overlap. A technically sharp clip that says nothing meaningful is weak on information; a beautiful sequence that leaves the subject unexplained is weak on communication. Originality is most persuasive when it makes a genuine observation easier to see, not when it obscures the observation.

Why the contest rules matter more than a generic checklist
Published criteria are competition-specific. Nikon Small World in Motion lists four criteria—originality, informational content, technical proficiency, and visual impact—and describes judging by an independent expert panel, but the page reviewed does not publish numerical weights. NUS states that its criteria are “not in order of importance,” so an entrant should not assume that artistic creativity outranks scientific interest or that technical quality is worth a fixed percentage.
Nikon Small World in Motion
Nikon’s four labels are a useful high-level test: Is the idea original? Does the clip inform? Is the execution technically proficient? Does the result have visual impact? The criteria do not prescribe a particular narrative, microscope, color palette, or editing style. Your submission still has to comply with the current edition’s entry rules.
Microscopy Society of America Micrograph Awards
MSA describes its goal as showcasing scientific micrographs and movie clips. Its winning entries must combine scientific content with exceptional composition and other aesthetic qualities. The video category accepts movie or streaming-data clips up to 15 seconds, including acquired microscopy clips and reconstructed microscopy data. MSA also asks for supporting statements covering scientific significance, acquisition, and post-acquisition processing, plus a short title and descriptive caption. A permission form is required.
NUS Centre for Bioimaging Sciences 2026
NUS lists scientific interest, artistic creativity, technical quality, and caption content and quality, explicitly saying the criteria are not in order of importance. Its 2026 entry rules accepted still images, 3D reconstructions, and videos and requested the highest-quality media in standard formats. The submission information included who prepared the sample, who performed imaging, the instrument and laboratory, the principal investigator, and the institution or department.

An adjacent image-contest example
Proteintech’s 2026 microscopy image competition selected finalists using overall aesthetics, technical difficulty, research relevance, originality, and suitability, followed by a public vote for the overall winner. It was an image competition rather than a video-specific rubric, so it should not be treated as a video rule. Its entry deadline was October 5, 2026; as of October 16, 2026, that deadline had passed. The example illustrates how a contest can combine expert selection with public voting and how eligibility details can differ sharply between competitions.
Make the scientific point legible before you optimize the style
State the one observation the viewer should retain
Write a plain-language sentence before editing: “This sequence shows [the structure or process] doing [the observable action], which matters because [the scientific significance].” Do not put template variables such as [the structure or process] in the final caption; use the actual specimen and event. If you cannot name the observation, the clip may be visually attractive but difficult to judge for scientific or informational value.
Choose motion that adds information
For a video entry, movement, elapsed time, focus change, or a three-dimensional reconstruction should reveal something that a still frame would communicate less effectively. This is a practical recommendation derived from the video category and the published information and visual-impact criteria, not a universal requirement stated by every contest. Avoid motion that merely pans across empty space, repeats an identical frame, or makes the important structure too brief to recognize.

Guide attention without concealing evidence
Use framing, scale, contrast, and a restrained color scheme to direct the eye. Keep labels, arrows, or overlays away from the feature being judged unless the contest permits them and they genuinely clarify the observation. A creative treatment should remain interpretable by someone who did not acquire the data.

Technical quality: what to inspect before submission
NUS explicitly names resolution, dynamic range, and artifacts as examples of technical quality. The following checks apply those examples to a video workflow; they are practical preparation steps, not a claim that every competition publishes the same technical checklist.
Resolution and viewing size
Review the exported clip at the size judges are likely to see, not only zoomed in on your workstation. Fine structures that disappear after scaling cannot support a technical-quality or informational claim. Keep the highest-quality source and export specified by the contest; do not rely on a low-resolution messaging or social-media copy.
Dynamic range and exposure
Check that bright channels are not clipped and that dark structures are not crushed into a featureless field. If the subject spans a wide intensity range, adjust display settings carefully and document the adjustment when the rules request processing details. A dramatic black background is useful only when it preserves the relevant signal.

Inspect the entire sequence for focus drift, sudden exposure changes, dropped frames, compression shimmer, and motion that is too fast to interpret. Where movement is the scientific point, choose a frame rate and playback speed that let the viewer follow the event without turning it into a blur. Where movement is not the point, stabilize or trim distracting camera motion if the rules allow it.

Artifacts and reconstruction limits
Look for stitching seams, ringing, dead pixels, uneven illumination, channel misregistration, and reconstruction artifacts. Do not erase a feature simply because it is inconvenient; instead, disclose relevant corrections and distinguish measured structure from an illustrative rendering. MSA’s category includes reconstructed microscopy data, so a reconstruction can be eligible, but its provenance and processing still need to be described accurately.
Captions are part of the judged submission
NUS treats caption content and quality as a criterion, while MSA requests a short title, a descriptive caption, and separate information about significance, acquisition, and processing. Write the caption before uploading so that it exposes gaps in the video itself.
Identify what the viewer sees
- Specimen, cell type, tissue, material, or process.
- Relevant labels, channels, or color meanings.
- The event or structure the viewer should notice.
- Any scale, time interval, or three-dimensional view needed for interpretation.
Document how it was made
- Imaging technique and instrument.
- Who prepared the sample and who performed imaging, where the contest requests those roles.
- Laboratory, principal investigator, and institution or department when required by the form.
- Acquisition details and post-acquisition processing requested by the competition.
Keep the explanation informative and readable
An imaginative caption can convey why the sequence matters, but it should not replace factual identification. Avoid unexplained metaphor, unsupported biological claims, or language that implies a process the footage does not show. Follow the contest’s word or character limit if one is published.

Processing, provenance, and disclosure
Processing rules can be stricter than the general judging language. MSA asks for a processing description when applicable. NUS’s 2026 rules permitted only specified adjustments: lookup tables (LUTs), 3D lighting, and minor brightness- or contrast-type adjustments. That limitation applied to that competition and year; it is not a universal rule for microscopy contests.

Keep an unaltered source, a dated export, and a record of every operation used to create the submitted file. Describe adjustments in the terms the entry form requests. If a reconstruction, color mapping, temporal interpolation, stabilization, or noise correction materially affects interpretation, disclose it rather than presenting the display result as untouched acquisition data. Never assume that a technique permitted by one contest is permitted by another.
File limits, formats, and permissions can decide eligibility
Even a strong clip can be rejected for a procedural mistake. MSA’s video micrograph entry permits clips up to 15 seconds, accepts MOV, MPG, AVI, MP4, or WMV, and requires a permission form. Those limits and formats belong to MSA’s rules, not to every competition.
NUS’s 2026 rules requested the highest-quality media in standard formats and accepted videos alongside still images and 3D reconstructions. “Highest quality” should be interpreted through the current form’s technical instructions rather than by guessing a codec or frame size.

- Record the maximum duration, accepted container formats, resolution requirements, naming rules, and deadline.
- Confirm whether reconstructed data, streaming data, or edited sequences are eligible.
- Complete permission, consent, credit, and rights forms before the upload window closes.
- Play the final uploaded file, not only the master, and verify that captions and metadata match the entry.
A practical way to compare two competitions
When deciding where a clip fits, compare the rule pages on the dimensions below instead of assuming that a familiar contest uses the same standards.

Common weak points and how to correct them
- Beautiful but unidentified: Add a precise title and caption, and make the key structure visible early enough to understand.
- Scientific claim exceeds the evidence: Rewrite the caption to describe the observed event rather than inferring an unsupported mechanism.
- Motion hides the subject: Slow, trim, or reframe the sequence when allowed, and remove transitions that do not convey information.
- Clipped highlights or blocked shadows: Recheck dynamic range and export settings; document permitted display adjustments.
- Processing is unclear: Preserve the source, list post-acquisition operations, and verify that each operation is allowed by that contest.
- Caption omits contributors: Use the form’s requested fields for sample preparer, imager, instrument, laboratory, principal investigator, and institution.
- File meets your editor’s settings but not the contest’s: Re-read the current duration, format, quality, and permission requirements immediately before upload.
Pre-submission checklist
- Write the single scientific or informational point in one sentence.
- Confirm that the specimen or process is identifiable without private laboratory knowledge.
- Watch the clip at normal display size for focus, exposure, dynamic range, artifacts, and readable motion.
- Check that composition and color direct attention without obscuring evidence.
- Prepare a factual title and caption, then add acquisition, significance, personnel, instrument, laboratory, and processing details required by the form.
- Verify every processing operation against the current edition’s rules.
- Export within the contest’s duration, format, and quality limits.
- Complete permission and rights documentation.
- Play the submitted file after upload and confirm that the metadata and caption describe that exact version.
What the published criteria do not tell you
The official guidance reviewed for MSA, Nikon Small World in Motion, and NUS does not establish numerical judging weights or a universal order of importance. Proteintech’s adjacent 2026 image competition also lists finalist qualities without publishing weights. Therefore, no responsible guide can promise that a particular color treatment, microscope, editing technique, or category will improve your odds. The strongest defensible strategy is to satisfy the named criteria simultaneously: make the science clear, make the viewing experience purposeful, maintain technical integrity, and disclose the method honestly.
