Selçuk Karayel says he rebuilt Yudum.NET, the Turkish IRC network he opened in 1998, as a Go application with a WebAssembly-powered browser client. The rewrite brings the IRC daemon, services, website and webchat into one system. His central lesson is that keeping a community online mattered more than adding another feature: “Features don’t bring people back; reliability keeps them.”
Why rebuild a network that had been running for decades?
Karayel describes Yudum.NET as a community service that had outlasted several generations of its software. He says its earlier setup evolved from HybridIRC to UnrealIRCd and eventually consisted of a C daemon, Tcl and mIRC-script bots, and a separately attached web chat. That arrangement had worked, but maintaining the pieces as a whole had become the problem he wanted to solve.
His reason for rewriting it was not that IRC had stopped working or that users needed an entirely new protocol. It was to make the service easier for one person to operate and to bring its web and social features closer to the chat system. The history and architectural details here are Karayel’s account as the project owner, not an independently audited history or code review.
What the replacement includes
Karayel describes the new platform as a single Go binary that combines the IRC daemon, NickServ and ChanServ services, social features, the website and webchat. It uses one SQLite database, one identity and one administration panel. He says the design is suited to a solo developer running the service on one VPS.
#1 Best Overall
That consolidation is an operational choice, not proof that a single binary is always better than separate services. It can reduce the number of independently managed components, but it also concentrates functionality in one application. The account does not provide a controlled comparison with a multi-service architecture or measurements showing how the design performs under load.
Traditional IRC remains part of the design
Users can still connect with conventional clients such as mIRC, HexChat and IRCCloud, according to Karayel. His stated compatibility goal is that ordinary IRC users continue to see normal channel messages, while newer capabilities are available to clients that know how to use them. Features such as video calls are not presented as standard IRC functionality.
The post also reports that a compatibility bug had allowed signaling messages to reach unsupported clients and that Karayel fixed it shortly before publication. That is a report about the service at the time of the post, not a guarantee that every client or future release behaves identically.

Why use Go in both the server and browser?
Karayel says the webchat, site interactions and administration panel are written in Go and compiled to WebAssembly with TinyGo. One motivation was to use Go types across browser and server code and share game-validation logic. He describes the shipped interactive browser experience as using a small WebAssembly loader without hand-written JavaScript for those interactive components.
That approach does not eliminate JavaScript from the browser platform. TinyGo’s official browser guide explains that a compiled .wasm module is loaded through the WebAssembly JavaScript API and requires the helper file wasm_exec.js, which should match the TinyGo compiler version. The guide also recommends serving the WASM file with the application/wasm content type for broad browser support. Those are general implementation requirements, not details independently verified for Yudum.NET.
The security rationale has limits
Karayel connects the WebAssembly approach to a strict Content Security Policy and reduced exposure to certain inline-script patterns. That is a design rationale, not evidence that the site is secure or immune to cross-site scripting. WebAssembly does not replace security review: the application still needs careful handling of user input, authorization, browser messaging and server-side behavior.
What users can do beyond chatting
The project post lists a social feed, user profiles and follows, discovery pages, Backgammon and Okey variants, voice rooms, one-to-one calls, camera and screen sharing, game streaming, radio and moderation controls. The conventional IRC interface and the richer web client expose different parts of that experience; the post does not claim every feature is available through every IRC client.
Recommended Free Tools
This distinction matters for a community service that wants to add web capabilities without discarding the protocol and clients existing members already use. IRC remains the common layer for ordinary channel conversation, while specialized interactions depend on a client that supports them.
Why reliability became the priority
Karayel says frequent restarts harmed community retention more than missing features. An IRC restart disconnects everyone at once, so a release can disrupt the central activity even when the change is intended to improve the service.

- The outside is made with holographic glitter material, which changes color depending on the viewing angle. The clear coating makes it smooth so the color doesn’t rub off. It can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
- The interior is made with complimentary colored vegan leather PU, which makes the wallet more flexible and beautiful.
- Small in size (4.7” X 7.5”), it will hold a regular guest check book (which is not included), and can be put into an apron pocket.
- The wallet has 7 pockets and compartments, which can accommodate cash, business cards, credit cards, receipts, etc. to help the server be organized. It also has a pen/pencil holder and can be used as a personal organizer for travel, school, or daily work.
- Perfect for Waitstaff: Ideal for using at restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. Great for waitstaff, servers, and bartenders
He describes using a bridge process to keep HTTP available while a new binary starts. That helps preserve web availability, but he says IRC connections still drop during a release. He also describes batching changes to templates, styles, translations, WebAssembly and settings, and moving most settings into the database so they can be updated quickly.
The distinction is practical: keeping a website reachable during deployment is not the same as keeping live IRC sessions connected. A built-in bouncer is described as a future project, not a feature already delivered.
What the rewrite cost in development effort
Karayel reports several project-specific trade-offs from using TinyGo and browser WebAssembly. He encountered sharp edges in syscall/js, numeric values that could arrive as strings, the need to account for 32-bit integers, and the need to manage memory carefully. He says the WebAssembly download is several megabytes and builds take minutes.
These are his experiences with this project, not general TinyGo benchmarks. The post supplies no independently published load tests, performance measurements, user-retention data or security audit. It therefore supports a useful account of implementation choices and operating concerns, but not a quantitative claim that the rewrite is faster, safer or more scalable than the old system.
What other small-community operators can take from it
- Count the cost of interruption. For a live chat service, a release that disconnects everyone can be more consequential than a missing feature.
- Preserve useful compatibility. New browser features need not require every established user to abandon a conventional IRC client.
- Consolidation has trade-offs. One binary, database and identity may simplify operations for a solo maintainer, while also concentrating responsibilities in one system.
- Budget for browser-specific work. Sharing a language and types does not remove WebAssembly runtime, interop, download-size or build-time considerations.
- Separate design intent from assurance. A strict Content Security Policy and less inline scripting can be part of a security strategy, but they do not constitute a security audit.
Karayel’s account is a case study in maintaining one long-running community, not a universal blueprint. The right architecture depends on the operator’s capacity, the existing clients members rely on, and how much downtime the community can tolerate.
