Entering a special character means inserting a character that you can’t readily type with the currently selected key or keyboard layout. You might use a character picker, a keyboard shortcut, a code, or a different language input method. The right method depends on your device, app, and how often you need the character.
What counts as a special character?
“Special character” is a practical, context-dependent term rather than one fixed category. It can mean punctuation or symbols such as an em dash (—) or copyright sign (©), an accented letter such as é, or a character from another writing system. A character that is difficult to reach on one keyboard may be a normal key on another layout.
A keyboard keypress and the character that appears are related but distinct: software interprets keyboard input and encodes the resulting text character. Unicode’s technical introduction explains this distinction.

Which method should you use?
- You know what the character looks like, but not its code: use a character picker or character map, then select and insert or copy the character.
- You need a few characters occasionally: a picker or an app-specific shortcut is usually simpler than changing your keyboard setup.
- You type accented letters often: consider a keyboard layout or input source suited to the language, rather than looking up each letter separately.
- You know the Unicode value: code entry may be convenient, but the steps vary by operating system and application.
- You use assistive technology or a nonstandard input device: choose a method compatible with your setup; Windows’ accessibility guidance describes using Character Map with a screen reader.
How to enter special characters on each platform
Windows
For an occasional symbol, open Character Map, choose a font, select a character shown in that font, and copy it into your document. Character Map only displays characters available in the selected font. Microsoft’s Windows accessibility instructions describe Character Map and a Unicode-value workflow involving the numeric keypad with Num Lock enabled; follow that page’s steps rather than assuming one universal Windows Unicode shortcut.

Windows also provides keyboard and input-layout options and an emoji and symbol panel. Microsoft’s keyboard tips point to those options for symbols such as em dashes and copyright signs. The exact steps can depend on Windows version and keyboard settings.
Microsoft Word
Word supports a specific hexadecimal Unicode workflow: type the character’s hexadecimal code, optionally preceded by “U+” as described in Microsoft’s instructions, then press Alt+X. Word also documents ASCII entry using the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. Mac
For many accented letters, press and hold the relevant letter key—such as “a”—to show an accent menu, then choose the character. You can also open Character Viewer to browse characters. For frequent Latin-script entry, Apple notes that the ABC – Extended input source can support languages such as English and Italian. For hexadecimal Unicode entry, the Unicode Consortium documents adding the Unicode Hex Input source under Input Sources, switching to it, holding Option, and typing the hexadecimal value. This method has a limit: it does not handle characters above U+FFFF, whose codes require more than four hexadecimal digits. Linux desktops
On GNOME and some other GTK desktop environments, the Unicode FAQ documents this sequence: press Ctrl+Shift+U, release the keys, type the hexadecimal value, then press Space or Enter. The FAQ says KDE and other Qt environments did not have an equivalent function when it was written, so check the documentation for your current desktop and version instead of relying on that older platform note.
iPhone, iPad, and Android
The Unicode FAQ says iOS and Android do not provide an official built-in hexadecimal-code entry method; third-party keyboards may offer one. For everyday use, try the on-screen keyboard’s language or symbol options, or the app’s character picker. Available choices depend on the operating system, keyboard, and app.

Unicode codes, ASCII codes, and keyboard layouts are different
Unicode hexadecimal entry uses a character’s Unicode value. ASCII numeric entry is a separate method documented by Microsoft for Word, and keyboard-layout or language-input methods let you produce characters through a configured set of keys. These workflows are not interchangeable. Before using a shortcut, check that it applies to your operating system, app, and input configuration.

What to check when a character will not appear
- Confirm the app supports the method. A code-entry shortcut documented for Word may not work in another program.
- Check the selected font. A character map shows what is available in its selected font; a font may not include every glyph.
- Verify the input source and layout. A key combination can produce different results under different keyboard layouts.
- Check the code-entry limit. On Mac, Unicode Hex Input is limited to characters represented with four hexadecimal digits; the Unicode FAQ also describes desktop-specific differences on Linux.
- Use a picker if you only know the appearance. A character map or viewer avoids the need to identify and enter a code.
