Monitoring a Node.js health endpoint can cost nothing for some qualifying AWS checks—or incur per-check, telemetry, alerting, and billing-query charges. The endpoint’s meaning matters just as much: a process liveness response, a readiness signal, and an external check of the public route prove different things. Define what “healthy” means first, then count the whole monitoring path and assign shared costs using a documented rule.

What does a health endpoint actually prove?

A health response is only meaningful when its contract is clear. Separate three questions that are often collapsed into one:

  • Liveness: Is the Node.js process functioning, or should its runtime restart it?
  • Readiness: Can this instance accept work now?
  • External availability: Can a checker reach the public route and receive the expected response?

These are related but not interchangeable. An external HTTP check can show that a route is reachable and returns a chosen response; it does not, by itself, establish that every dependency is healthy or that the platform will route traffic correctly. AWS EKS illustrates separate /healthz and /readyz endpoints for process health and readiness, respectively. That is an EKS example, not a universal Node.js naming standard. AWS EKS application best practices.

For a public synthetic check, make the endpoint answer a user-facing question, such as whether the production route is reachable and returning the expected response. Keep internal orchestration probes and dependency diagnostics distinct so an external check does not imply more than it tests.

Choose checks that match the question

Amazon Route 53 health checks support HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP. A TCP check establishes a connection; HTTP or HTTPS checks can test a response, and can optionally search the response body for a specified string. AWS documents a 5,120-byte search window. HTTPS checks can enable SNI. Each option changes what the result demonstrates, so select the least complex check that verifies the intended contract. Route 53 health-check documentation.

A deep dependency check can create misleading outcomes. AWS EKS best-practices guidance warns that tying readiness to a shared external dependency such as a database can cause replicas to become unready together when that dependency fails. That warning is specifically Kubernetes guidance; the broader lesson is to decide whether dependency failure should remove an instance from service or be reported through a separate diagnostic signal. AWS EKS application best practices.

How often should an uptime monitor ping the endpoint?

Route 53 offers 30-second and 10-second intervals. AWS documentation says a 30-second setting averages about one request every two seconds, while the 10-second setting results in more than one request per second. Independent checkers do not coordinate, so requests can arrive in bursts with quiet gaps rather than at a perfectly even cadence. Route 53 health-check documentation.

Faster polling can reduce the time before a failure is noticed, but increases endpoint request volume; AWS also says fast checks incur an additional charge. Choose an interval and consecutive-failure threshold according to the detection speed you need and the load and cost you can accept. Do not infer a precise detection delay from the interval alone: checker behavior and the configured failure threshold matter.

Estimate the request volume

For one endpoint and one checking configuration, use this planning formula:

estimated monthly checks = observed average checks per second × 60 × 60 × 24 × days in billing period

For multiple endpoints, multiply by endpoint count and account for each checker population if the provider charges by checker or region. Prefer observed request logs where available. The Route 53 average is not a promise of smooth cadence or a measurement of your bill.

What charges belong in the monitoring cost?

Count more than the base health-check price. Amazon Route 53 pricing, checked in 2026, lists up to 50 health checks for qualifying AWS endpoints at no additional cost. Its listed basic monthly rate is $0.50 per AWS endpoint check and $0.75 per non-AWS endpoint check; optional feature charges are listed at $1.00 and $2.00 per check per month, respectively. Partial months are prorated. Eligibility depends on AWS’s endpoint and account criteria, and prices and offer terms can change, so verify the current Route 53 pricing page before budgeting.

  • Fast Refresh & Free Data Storage - The industrial built-in temperature and humidity sensor takes readings every 10 seconds to make sure the temp/humidity are within the safe range. Every 10 minutes the most recent reading is updated on the online portal. Readings are stored on our servers for 1 year and can be downloaded anytime on a CSV file.

Those check prices do not necessarily cover every adjacent service or data query. Route 53 publishes health-check metrics to CloudWatch once per minute, including check status, the percentage of checkers reporting healthy, TCP connection time, SSL handshake time, and time to first byte. CloudWatch alarms can use these metrics; AWS notes that notifications may take several minutes after a health check fails. Include any applicable metric, alarm, and notification costs in the setup’s total. Route 53 health-check monitoring.

If an automated attribution job queries billing data through the Cost Explorer API, include that too. The AWS Cost Explorer pricing page lists $0.01 per API request using the primary billing view and $0.01 per source for custom billing views; verify the current rates and your query pattern at Cost Explorer pricing.

Use a per-endpoint worksheet

  • Endpoint category and eligibility for any included allowance.
  • Basic check rate and optional features selected.
  • Interval, checker scope, and endpoint count.
  • CloudWatch metrics and alarms, plus any configured notifications.
  • Cost Explorer API requests or other billing queries used for attribution.
  • Shared monitoring infrastructure and its allocation rule.

How do you attribute monitoring costs to one service?

Start with direct resource costs, then handle shared charges separately. AWS cost-allocation tags can organize supported resource costs in billing reports and Cost Explorer, but applying a tag alone is not enough: activate the tag in Billing and Cost Management, and confirm that the service supports the tag and the cost detail you need. Route 53 health checks support tags, which AWS identifies as the tags Billing and Cost Management uses to organize the bill. Use stable values such as application, environment, owner, or cost center where useful. Tagging Route 53 health checks.

Allocate shared charges with an explicit driver

Tags cannot create per-service or per-tenant billing detail that the underlying usage data does not contain. For a shared monitor, load balancer, or platform charge, choose a measurable proxy tied to workload use—for example, monitored endpoint count, request volume, or measured compute. State the rule, apply it consistently, and reconcile the allocated totals against the bill. AWS Well-Architected guidance recommends using workload metrics or business outcomes for cost-efficiency analysis and reconciling cost-allocation processes with cost and usage information. AWS Well-Architected cost monitoring guidance.

Keep provider-billed amounts distinct from internal allocations. A proxy is a transparent accounting decision, not evidence that the provider charged that amount directly to the service.
