Xetra is Deutsche Börse’s central electronic trading platform for stocks, ETFs and other exchange-traded products. It is a trading venue, not a brokerage account or a securities-depository account. Your bank or broker connects to Xetra, accepts your order and, if it offers venue selection, sends that order to Xetra for execution. The platform’s central order book matches buy and sell orders by price and then time, with continuous trading interrupted by scheduled auctions.

What Xetra is—and what it is not

Xetra is the electronic marketplace used to match orders in many German and European securities. Deutsche Börse describes it as its central electronic trading platform for stocks, ETFs and exchange-traded products (ETPs). The product range also includes exchange-traded commodities (ETCs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs).

Xetra does not hold your cash or securities and does not give you a standalone login for placing retail orders. A bank or broker provides the account, performs the required client checks, accepts your instruction and connects to the venue. The broker’s custody arrangement and investor-protection regime therefore matter separately from Xetra’s matching technology.

When a broker displays several execution venues, selecting “Xetra” means asking that broker to route the order there. If the broker does not expose venue choice, it may select a venue under its own execution policy. In that case, seeing a security that is also listed on Xetra does not by itself prove that your order will be executed on Xetra.

How orders are matched on Xetra

The central order book

Xetra maintains a central order book containing buy and sell interest. The best available buy orders and the best available sell orders are ranked so that executable prices can meet. The platform’s stated rule is that price takes precedence over time: an order offering a more competitive price ranks ahead of one offering a less competitive price. If two orders have the same price, the order entered first has priority.

This price-time priority is why changing a limit order can move it behind other orders at the same price. It also explains why an order may fill only partially: the available quantity at the chosen price can be smaller than the quantity you requested. Any unfilled remainder is handled according to the order type and validity setting selected in your broker’s ticket.

Continuous trading

During continuous trading, executable buy and sell orders are matched automatically as soon as compatible prices and quantities are available. Your broker sends the instruction, Xetra determines whether it can match, and the broker returns an execution report. That report should show the executed price, quantity and time; retain it for your records and for checking that the result matches your instruction.

Opening, intraday and closing auctions

Xetra also runs opening, intraday and closing auctions. Orders are collected during an auction phase rather than matched one by one immediately. At the end of the phase, compatible orders are executed at a single uniform auction price. An order entered near an auction can therefore receive a different result from an order entered during continuous trading, even when the displayed prices looked similar beforehand.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

Auction participation and the exact timing depend on the security and the official trading schedule. Your broker’s order ticket should indicate whether an order is eligible for an auction and how its validity is treated if it is not fully executed.

What can be traded on Xetra

  • Shares: equities admitted to trading on the platform, including many German large- and mid-cap listings.
  • ETFs: exchange-traded funds, with listings in different currencies and share classes.
  • ETCs: exchange-traded commodities.
  • ETNs: exchange-traded notes.
  • Other ETPs: exchange-traded products that meet the venue’s admission and trading requirements.

A company or fund can have more than one listing or trading venue. Before submitting an order, identify the exact instrument with its ticker, ISIN or other identifier, then confirm the venue, currency and listing shown by your broker. Similar names can represent different share classes, accumulating versus distributing funds, or products with different currencies and risk characteristics.

Why Xetra matters to investors

Deutsche Börse presents Xetra as a reference market for German equities. Operator-published figures give an indication of its scale, but they are not guarantees of liquidity for every security or every moment of the day.

Measure Published figure Qualification
Share of order-book turnover on all German exchanges Approximately 70% Deutsche Börse Group venue page, updated in 2025.
Share of European ETF order-book turnover Approximately 30% Deutsche Börse Group venue page, updated in 2025.
German equity trading conducted via Xetra Well over 90% Deutsche Börse AG page updated in 2026.
Retail share of orders About 25% Deutsche Börse AG page updated in 2026; measured as orders, not volume.
Retail share of trading volume Approximately 10% Deutsche Börse AG page updated in 2026.

These percentages describe aggregates reported by the venue operator. They do not mean that every stock or ETF has its tightest spread on Xetra, nor that every broker gives retail clients direct access. Liquidity still varies by instrument, time, order size and market conditions.

Xetra trading hours and auction windows

Regular session

Regular Xetra trading runs Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 17:30 CET on trading days. “Trading days” excludes exchange holidays and other non-trading dates in the official calendar. A public holiday in your country does not necessarily match a Xetra holiday, so check the calendar used by the venue and the broker.

Extended Xetra Retail Service

The Extended Xetra Retail Service adds an early window from 08:00 to 08:55 CET and a late window after the closing auction until 22:00 CET, subject to the official trading calendar. This is a retail service, not a promise that every security, broker or order type is available for the entire period.

Extended sessions can have less displayed depth and wider spreads than the busiest part of the regular session. Before using them, confirm the security’s eligibility, the broker’s hours, the applicable order types and whether the quote is live or delayed.

How to buy a share or ETF on Xetra through a broker

  1. Use a connected bank or broker. Open and fund an account with a provider that connects to Xetra for the security you want. Account approval, identity checks and funding are handled by that provider.
  2. Find the exact instrument. Search by the security’s identifier and verify the name, ISIN or ticker, listing, currency and product type. For an ETF, check the specific share class rather than relying on a similar fund name.
  3. Check venue availability. Open the order ticket and confirm that Xetra is selectable. If the ticket shows only “best execution” or a default venue, read the broker’s execution policy to understand where it may route the order.
  4. Choose the order settings. Select an order type and validity period supported by the broker. A limit price can control the worst acceptable execution price, while other settings may seek immediate execution; the ticket’s wording and warnings govern what will happen.
  5. Review the complete cost estimate. Check the displayed brokerage commission, exchange or venue fees, custody charges, currency-conversion cost and any applicable taxes. A low headline commission does not necessarily mean a low total cost.
  6. Check the market context. Review the current bid, ask, displayed quantities, spread and whether the market is in continuous trading or an auction phase. If quotes are delayed, do not treat them as a live execution indication.
  7. Submit during an eligible session. Send the order during regular Xetra hours or, where supported, an Extended Xetra Retail Service window. The broker may reject an order outside the security’s or venue’s permitted schedule.
  8. Verify the execution report. Confirm the executed price, quantity and time. If only part of the order filled, check whether the remainder is still working, expired or cancelled under the selected validity instruction.

Costs, currency and execution quality

Xetra itself is only one component of your trading cost. Your broker may combine its commission with exchange fees, clearing or settlement charges, custody fees and taxes. If the security trades in a currency different from the cash in your account, the broker’s foreign-exchange spread or conversion fee can be material even when the commission is small.

Cost or condition to compare Question to ask the broker Why it matters
Venue access Is Xetra available for this exact security? A broker may support Xetra for ETFs but not for every share or ETP.
Trading commission What is charged per order, and are minimums applied? Small orders can be disproportionately affected by a minimum fee.
Exchange and settlement fees Are venue, clearing or settlement charges passed through? These can be separate from the advertised commission.
Custody Is there an ongoing account or securities-custody charge? Long-term holdings may cost more through custody than through the initial trade.
Currency conversion Which exchange rate and markup are used? A euro-denominated listing can create conversion cost for a non-euro account.
Market-data access Are Xetra quotes real time, delayed or subscription-based? Displayed prices may not represent the current market if data is delayed.
Taxes Which transaction or investment taxes apply in my jurisdiction? Tax treatment depends on your residence, instrument and account type.

No single fee schedule applies to all brokers or countries. Obtain the current tariff and order-preview disclosure from the provider before trading.

Xetra versus the Frankfurt Stock Exchange

Xetra and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange are not interchangeable names for one order book. Xetra is Deutsche Börse’s central electronic platform with its own matching process and schedule. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is a separate venue in the German market ecosystem. A security can be tradable on both, but the available prices, liquidity, hours, fees and order-routing controls can differ.

Feature Xetra Frankfurt Stock Exchange
Venue identity Central electronic trading platform operated by Deutsche Börse Separate German exchange venue
Order book Central order book with price-time priority and scheduled auctions Uses its own venue rules and trading process
Access for individuals Indirect, through a connected bank or broker Indirect, through a broker that supports the venue
Trading hours 09:00–17:30 CET regular session; retail extensions may run 08:00–08:55 and after the close to 22:00 CET Hours and session rules must be checked separately
Best choice for a specific order Depends on the instrument, spread, depth, fees and broker access Depends on the same factors at that venue

Do not assume that a quote seen under a generic “Frankfurt” label is a Xetra quote. Read the venue field in the order ticket and execution report.

Market data and transparency

European Union rules require trading venues to publish current pre-trade information—available bid and ask prices and quantities—and post-trade information showing the executed price, volume and time. Brokers may package that data as real-time, delayed or historical feeds, and some charge separately for live access.

Best Value

Use the quote display to assess the visible spread and size, but remember that displayed depth can change before your order reaches the book. A large order may consume several price levels and receive multiple execution prices. The execution report, rather than a pre-trade snapshot, is the definitive record of what your order achieved.

Common problems and how to handle them

“Xetra” is missing from the venue list

The broker may not connect to Xetra for that instrument, may hide venue selection under an advanced ticket, or may route under a best-execution policy. Check the instrument’s listing details and the provider’s supported-market list. If direct selection is unavailable, you cannot force a Xetra execution merely by naming the exchange in an order note.

The order is rejected outside market hours

Confirm whether the date is a Xetra trading day, whether you are inside the regular or extended retail window, and whether the security participates in that window. Some brokers accept an instruction for later release; others reject it immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order remains unfilled

A limit order can remain open when no seller is willing to meet your price, or when the displayed quantity is insufficient. Check the order status, remaining quantity and validity period. Changing the price may alter your time priority; cancelling and replacing an order creates a new queue position.

The fill price differs from the quote

Quotes can be delayed, the market can move, or your order can execute across several price levels. An auction can also produce one uniform price that differs from the last continuous-trading quote. Compare the time stamp, session phase, displayed spread and execution report before concluding that the broker made an error.

The total charge is higher than the commission

Open the broker’s cost breakdown for venue fees, settlement, custody, currency conversion and taxes. Ask for the current tariff if an item is not clear; these charges are provider- and jurisdiction-specific.

What to verify before placing an order

  • The exact security identifier, share class and currency.
  • That Xetra is available for this listing and can actually be selected.
  • Whether the market is in continuous trading, an auction or an extended retail window.
  • Live versus delayed quotes and the visible bid, ask and quantities.
  • Commission, venue, settlement, custody, currency and tax costs shown in the preview.
  • The order type, limit price, validity and treatment of any unfilled remainder.
  • The broker’s investor-protection jurisdiction and complaint process.
  • The official Xetra trading calendar and any broker-specific holiday schedule.

Trading hours, holiday calendars, venue access, fees, broker policies and market-share statistics can change. Recheck the current Deutsche Börse calendar and your broker’s terms immediately before acting.
