“WoW Classic Plus” is a description of the approach Blizzard is taking with World of Warcraft: Forever, not a formal game title established by the reporting. The idea is to build on the original vanilla WoW world while keeping its design, pacing and tone recognizable. The team names four principles for judging changes: protect social experiences, stay approachable and familiar, keep the world central, and put the journey before the destination. Its reported decision to exclude Summoning Stones shows how those principles can weigh against convenience.
What does “WoW Classic Plus” mean?
In current coverage, “Classic Plus” is shorthand for an expansion of vanilla World of Warcraft that adds to the original game without abandoning what makes its world and play style feel like vanilla. The project is called World of Warcraft: Forever in the reporting. The available descriptions do not establish “Classic Plus” as its official product name, nor do they amount to a full feature roadmap.
The distinction matters because “plus” can suggest anything from a small set of quality-of-life adjustments to a substantial reworking of the game. Blizzard’s explanation is more specific about its intent than its eventual contents: ideas are to be considered against four design pillars, with the original game’s pacing and tone as a reference point. That gives players a way to understand the rationale for an individual decision, but it does not reveal every feature the team may add or reject.

The team also said its pillars grew out of playing different versions of Classic over the years and have a firm basis in vanilla WoW. Those are statements of design intent, not a promise that every player will agree with how a particular feature fits.

What are WoW: Forever’s four design pillars?
The pillars describe what the team says it wants to preserve as it considers additions. They are principles rather than published pass-or-fail tests: the reporting names them but does not provide a scoring system, a detailed checklist or criteria for resolving conflicts between them.
1. Nurture and Protect Social Experiences
This pillar puts player interaction among the things a change should preserve. The team’s Summoning Stones example illustrates its concern: if a tool makes it possible to reach a group quickly without the travel and coordination players otherwise need, it could reduce occasions for interaction. That is Blizzard’s design rationale for the decision, not a measured finding that every convenience feature reduces social play.
The word “protect” suggests that the team sees social play as something that can be affected by game systems, not just by whether players choose to chat. A feature could be convenient for an individual and still change how often people travel together or rely on one another. The pillar does not, by itself, indicate that all convenience features will be rejected; each proposal would need to be understood in context.

2. Approachable and Familiar
This pillar signals that additions should make sense within a game recognizable to people familiar with vanilla WoW. The available explanation does not spell out what counts as “approachable,” provide a specific usability standard, or set a limit on novelty. It would therefore be a mistake to treat the phrase as a promise that Forever will contain only familiar content, or to infer particular interface, class or progression rules from the name alone.

- 6 collectible tokens voted on by the fans
- Custom sculpted houses (Towns) and Hotels (Cities)
- Item package dimension : 10.0" L x 20.0" W x 1.25" H
Read alongside the other pillars, it points to a balance: a new idea can be new, but its fit with the established game matters. That interpretation helps explain the direction without turning a broad principle into an unannounced feature policy.
3. World as the Main Character
This principle treats Azeroth itself—not just the activities or rewards waiting at the end of a route—as central to the experience. In Blizzard’s explanation of Summoning Stones, quick teleport access could make the world feel smaller by reducing the importance of getting to a destination. The pillar is therefore about the role travel and place play in the game, not simply about preserving a large map.
It also offers a useful way to parse future announcements: ask whether a proposed system makes the world more meaningful to move through or turns it into an obstacle players routinely bypass. That is an interpretive question derived from the pillar, not a formal test Blizzard has published.

4. Journey before destination
The final pillar emphasizes the experience of progressing and getting somewhere, rather than treating the endpoint as the only thing that matters. It aligns naturally with the concern about fast access, but Blizzard’s reported explanation does not give a separate feature example or define exactly which mechanics embody this idea.

As a result, the name should not be used to claim that a particular leveling pace, travel time, quest structure or endgame system is confirmed. It expresses a priority: the path through the game is part of the experience the team wants to preserve.
Why is WoW: Forever reportedly leaving out Summoning Stones?
The clearest example of the pillars in practice is the reported decision not to include Summoning Stones, also called Meeting Stones in the coverage. In its October 9, 2026 report, TechRadar Gaming quoted the WoW: Forever team saying quick access to teleports could shrink the world and marginalize part of a class’s identity, such as that of the Warlock. The team said the feature fails to meet the pillars of protecting social experiences and keeping the world central.
The reasoning connects three possible effects. First, fewer players may need to make the trip to a destination. Second, reducing that journey could make the geography feel less significant. Third, if teleport access replaces a role associated with Warlocks, it could reduce the distinctiveness of that class. The team presents these as reasons for its decision; they are not proof that every teleport system necessarily produces the same effects in every version of WoW.
This example reveals a trade-off rather than a universal ban on convenience. A system can save time and still alter how players engage with the world or with one another. The pillars explain why Blizzard says those costs matter here; they do not establish that every quality-of-life feature will be excluded or how every future proposal will be judged.

How do the pillars shape the idea of Classic Plus?
The four principles can be read as related questions about the effect a change has on play. They are not an official scoring rubric, but considering them together clarifies the kind of tension the Summoning Stones decision represents.
- Social interaction versus convenience: Does a shortcut remove a reason for players to coordinate, travel or depend on one another?
- World traversal versus fast access: Does reaching a destination still involve the world, or does the world become something to skip?
- Familiarity versus novelty: Can a new idea fit a game recognizable as vanilla-rooted without simply repeating what already exists?
- Journey versus destination: Does the route or progression remain meaningful, rather than serving only as a delay before the reward?
These are useful lenses for reading design decisions, not confirmed questions Blizzard applies verbatim to every feature. A proposed change might support one pillar while putting pressure on another. The available account does not explain how the team would rank competing goals or what evidence it would require to settle a disagreement.
The framing also explains why “Classic Plus” should not be reduced to “vanilla with more content.” The reported goal includes preserving a particular pace, social texture and relationship to the world. An addition could be new in content but still be judged by whether it changes those qualities.

The same October 8 coverage reports a middle-ground visual goal. Blizzard said the aim is not to make assets look as if they were made in 2004, but also not to bring them to the fidelity level of modern WoW. The desired range, as described by the team, could have existed during vanilla, The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King.

That distinction rules out two easy assumptions: the reporting does not say Forever will simply reuse original 2004 assets, and it does not describe a move to modern WoW’s visual fidelity. It also does not specify an art pipeline, graphical settings, hardware requirements or particular examples of redesigned assets. The statement is a broad aesthetic target, not a technical specification.

No. Season of Discovery is relevant as an example of Blizzard experimenting within WoW Classic, but the cited sources do not establish that it is the same project as WoW: Forever or that its features will carry over. Treating the two as interchangeable would turn historical context into an unsupported roadmap.
At BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard presented Season of Discovery as a new twist on WoW Classic, with discoveries hidden throughout the world, level-banded phases, new endgame activities, Rune Engraving and class changes intended to remain true to Classic. The official panel recap is useful for understanding that earlier experiment’s stated design.

When the season launched, its hidden runes unlocked abilities unavailable in WoW Classic, and players could change rune builds freely. It used phased level caps: the initial cap was 25, and the launch endgame included a reworked 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid. Those launch details appear in Blizzard’s Season of Discovery announcement. Activision Blizzard’s November 3, 2023 press release gave November 30, 2023 as the season’s announced original launch date; it is a historical schedule, not a current WoW: Forever date.
Blizzard’s launch post said access to Season of Discovery was included for players with an active World of Warcraft subscription, with no additional purchase required. That statement is about Season of Discovery at launch. It does not establish current access terms for that season or subscription terms for WoW: Forever.
What is known—and what remains unconfirmed?
The reporting provides a clear account of the project’s stated design philosophy and one concrete decision. It does not provide enough information to infer a complete release plan. The distinction between what is reported and what remains open is important when interpreting discussion of an evolving Classic project.
- Reported: WoW: Forever is presented as building on vanilla WoW while aiming to retain its core design, pacing and tone.
- Reported: The team names four pillars: social experiences, approachability and familiarity, the world’s central role, and journey before destination.
- Reported: The team says Summoning Stones will not be included and explains the decision in terms of world scale, social interaction and Warlock identity.
- Not established by these reports: A complete feature list, release date, universal rule for future changes, or a promise that Season of Discovery systems will return.
- Not established: A quantified player-impact study proving that convenience changes weaken social play. The October 9 report mentions Blizzard referring to “22 years of data,” but does not identify a dataset, publish a measurement or provide quantified results.
The strongest conclusion is therefore about the decision-making lens, not the eventual contents of the game. Blizzard has explained the qualities it says it wants to protect; beyond the Summoning Stones example and visual target, the cited coverage does not establish how specific future features will fit those aims.
