Wii MotionPlus is a detachable accessory for the original Wii Remote. It provides finer motion sensing in games specifically designed to use it. Nintendo also produced the Wii Remote Plus, which builds the same functionality into a single controller instead of using a separate attachment.
Support is not automatic across the Wii library. Nintendo says a game benefits from MotionPlus only when its packaging carries the Wii MotionPlus icon. The clearest official examples are Wii Sports Resort, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Virtua Tennis 2009, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. Nintendo’s published material does not provide one complete worldwide list, so the packaging for the exact regional release remains the safest check.
What Wii MotionPlus actually is
The original Wii Remote detects movement, but MotionPlus adds more detailed representation of that movement for compatible software. The accessory connects to the bottom expansion connector of an original Wii Remote, turning that controller into the configuration required by a MotionPlus game.
MotionPlus is therefore an input accessory, not a standalone game controller. It has no independent purpose when it is not connected to a Wii Remote, and it does not upgrade every Wii title. A game must be designed to read the additional motion data.

Wii Remote Plus is the integrated alternative
Nintendo’s Wii Remote Plus combines an original Wii Remote and the MotionPlus function in one shell. It is a controller rather than an attachment. If a game accepts MotionPlus, a Wii Remote Plus can generally serve the same role as an original Wii Remote with the separate accessory.

Neither option makes a non-compatible game use MotionPlus. Compatibility belongs to the game as well as the controller.
How to tell whether a Wii game supports MotionPlus
Look for Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus icon on the packaging of the specific game. Nintendo support identifies that icon as the practical test: games without it do not gain an enhancement from the accessory.

Check the exact regional edition
Use the box, case insert or other official packaging for the copy you intend to play. A used disc may come from a different market, and the wording, rating panel and package design can vary by region. Do not infer support merely because a title is associated with motion controls or because a manual appears in Nintendo’s online Wii manuals catalog.
What the icon does and does not tell you
The icon establishes that the game takes advantage of MotionPlus, but it does not by itself explain whether every mode uses it, whether the accessory is required for the whole game, or whether only selected features use the additional sensing. Read the game’s instructions for the exact requirement.
Confirmed Wii MotionPlus games and requirements
The following titles are the strongest examples identified in Nintendo material. They should be treated as documented examples, not as a complete worldwide compatibility catalog.

Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports Resort is the clearest demonstration of the accessory’s purpose. Its manual instructs players to attach Wii MotionPlus whenever they play, and describes 12 sports and activities designed around the game’s motion input. If you are buying the game specifically to use an existing MotionPlus attachment, this is the most direct documented match.

Skyward Sword has a stricter equipment requirement than a game that merely supports an optional accessory. Nintendo’s support information specifies all three pieces: the Wii game, a Nunchuk and either a separate Wii MotionPlus attached to an original Wii Remote or a Wii Remote Plus. Leaving out the Nunchuk means the stated control setup is incomplete.
Other Nintendo-listed 2009 examples
Nintendo of Europe’s 2009 announcement named Virtua Tennis 2009, Grand Slam Tennis and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 as compatible examples. The announcement confirms compatibility at that level, but it does not document whether MotionPlus is used in every mode or only selected gameplay. Treat these as Nintendo-listed examples rather than as proof of identical implementation.

Why there is no single definitive game list here
Nintendo’s Wii manuals catalog includes documentation for MotionPlus-related products and games such as Wii Sports Resort, FlingSmash and Skyward Sword. That catalog is an index of manuals, not a compatibility database. A game appearing there does not, by itself, prove that it uses MotionPlus.
The official material identified for this topic also does not establish a complete list covering every country, release edition, partial feature or supported mode. Lists found elsewhere may combine regions or classify optional and required support differently. Use the detachable accessory when you already own an original Wii Remote

Choose Wii Remote Plus for an integrated controller
Wii Remote Plus removes the separate attachment from the setup. It is useful when you are building a controller collection from scratch, want fewer pieces to connect, or prefer the feel of a single controller. It is not the same product as the detachable accessory, even though it supplies the equivalent MotionPlus function for compatible software.
Account for other required hardware
Check every item listed for the game, not just the MotionPlus marking. Skyward Sword, for example, requires a Nunchuk in addition to MotionPlus or Wii Remote Plus. A controller purchase that covers only one requirement will not provide the complete setup.
Be careful with pre-owned hardware
For used listings, verify that the seller identifies the hardware model, that the attachment is actually included when advertised, and that the controller and accessory function together. Product condition, completeness and current retail availability are listing-specific matters; Nintendo’s general support pages do not validate an individual second-hand sale.

Setting up a compatible game
- Identify the controller you have. Determine whether it is an original Wii Remote that can accept the detachable accessory or a Wii Remote Plus with the function built in.
- Check the game’s packaging. Confirm the Wii MotionPlus icon on the exact regional copy. If the icon is absent, the accessory will not enhance that title.
- Read the game’s equipment requirement. Note whether MotionPlus is required, optional or limited to certain features, and check for additional hardware such as a Nunchuk.

MotionPlus can provide more finely represented movement in software designed around it. That is why compatible games can ask for the attachment or a Wii Remote Plus. In practical terms, compatibility is a three-part question: do you have a MotionPlus-capable controller, does the particular game edition carry Nintendo’s MotionPlus marking, and does the game’s equipment list require anything else?
