Wi-Fi is a family of wireless local-area networking technologies that lets compatible devices exchange data over radio, based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. It connects devices such as phones and computers to a local network without a cable to each one. That local network can also provide internet access, but Wi-Fi and internet service are not the same thing.

What does Wi-Fi mean?

Wi-Fi is the familiar name for wireless networking based on IEEE 802.11, a family of standards for how devices communicate across a wireless local area network (WLAN). IEEE describes 802.11 as covering the network’s medium access control (MAC) and physical (PHY) layers—the rules that help compatible devices exchange data over radio.

It is more accurate to treat Wi-Fi as the name of a wireless networking technology family than to expand it as “Wireless Fidelity.” The IEEE material establishes the relationship between Wi-Fi and 802.11; it does not substantiate that phrase as Wi-Fi’s formal name. How does Wi-Fi work at home?

  1. A router or access point provides the wireless network. It advertises the network and coordinates wireless connections in the local area.
  2. Devices join that network. A phone, laptop, television, printer, or other compatible device sends and receives data by radio instead of using an individual network cable.
  3. The local network can connect onward. In a common home setup, the router also connects to a modem or broadband gateway, which links the home network to an internet service provider.

Home equipment can combine or separate these functions, so there is no single required arrangement. The key distinction is that the wireless link connects a device to the local network; a separate internet connection may let that network reach online services. If the broadband connection is unavailable, devices may still be able to communicate locally, depending on the network and the service being used.

Wi-Fi versus the internet

Term What it refers to Example
Wi-Fi A local wireless connection between compatible devices and a network access point. Your phone connects wirelessly to the home router.
Internet service A connection from the local network to online networks and services, typically provided through a broadband provider. Your phone loads a website through the home broadband connection.

A device can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi even when the router has lost its internet connection. Conversely, internet service can reach a device over a wired connection rather than Wi-Fi.

What can you use Wi-Fi for?

Wi-Fi lets compatible devices share a local network in homes, workplaces, campuses, and public hotspots. Common uses include:

What are Wi-Fi bands and generations?

Bands

Wi-Fi products may operate on different radio bands, including 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. A router and a client device must support a band for the device to use it, and the availability of spectrum can depend on local regulations. A product’s certification record may list tested capabilities in particular bands; that is evidence about that product, not a promise that every router or device supports them.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Generations and the current standard

Wi-Fi generations refer to successive capabilities in the 802.11 family, not to one universal speed or a guarantee of coverage. IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as its active consolidated standard, published April 28, 2025, incorporating amendments published from 2021 through 2024. IEEE working-group materials identify IEEE Std 802.11be-2024 as Wi-Fi 7. IEEE SA: IEEE 802.11-2024 IEEE 802.11 Working Group

Wi-Fi Alliance certification records show that some certified products carry a Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 designation and list product-specific capabilities. Certification records do not establish how fast a device will perform in a particular home. Wi-Fi Alliance Product Finder

What to check when choosing Wi-Fi equipment

If you are comparing a wireless router or access point, match its capabilities to the devices and connection you actually have. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Generation compatibility: Identify the Wi-Fi generations supported by both the router and the devices you plan to connect.
  • Supported bands: Confirm which bands the router and client devices can use, and whether those bands are available in your market.
  • Coverage needs: Consider the home’s layout and where you need a reliable connection. Walls, placement, interference, and device capabilities can affect the experience; the standard or a generation label alone cannot predict coverage in every room.
  • Connected devices: Account for the number and types of devices that will share the network.
  • Broadband plan: A router cannot increase the speed of the internet service you subscribe to, and a Wi-Fi generation label does not guarantee a particular real-world speed.

These are comparison criteria, not a substitute for performance measurements in your own environment. A certified capability list describes tested features of a product; it is not an independent test of your home’s results.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Does Wi-Fi have one fixed speed or range?

No single speed or coverage distance applies to all Wi-Fi. The 802.11 family evolves, devices support different capabilities, and real-world results depend on the router, client device, placement, building materials, radio interference, and the broadband connection when internet access is involved. The standards and certification records described above establish technology and product capabilities, not measured outcomes for an individual home.
