VAPOR is scientific visualization software for exploring Earth-system model data in 3D. Developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), it helps ocean, atmosphere, and solar researchers inspect complex, time-varying fields and create animations and still images. It is designed for scientific data—not general-purpose 3D design.
What VAPOR is used for
VAPOR stands for Visualization and Analysis Platform for Ocean, Atmosphere, and Solar Researchers. NCAR describes it as an interactive 3D visualization environment that can produce animations and still-frame images. Researchers can use it to examine model fields, explore how data changes over time, and communicate results visually. NCAR’s VAPOR documentation outlines the project and its capabilities.
Its tools include direct volume rendering, isosurfaces, slices and cross-sections, flow visualization, and wind barbs. These approaches make it possible to inspect different properties of a scientific field rather than viewing only a flat plot. The specific methods available and useful depend on the data and the question being investigated; an ECMWF tutorial demonstrates examples.
Which data VAPOR can visualize
The official documentation lists direct import for WRF, MOM, POP, and ROMS data, plus some GRIB and NetCDF files. That qualification matters: support for “some” GRIB or NetCDF does not mean every file using those formats will load unchanged. Data structure and preparation requirements can vary by format and workflow.

For GRIB data handled through ECMWF’s Metview integration, the documented process includes a VAPOR Prepare step that converts the data into VAPOR’s format before opening it for interactive visualization. The tutorial also demonstrates selecting variables and vertical coordinates, adjusting scene scale, increasing refinement, and saving a VAPOR session. This is an example for that integration, not a mandatory preparation step for all supported inputs.
How VAPOR handles derived variables and large datasets
VAPOR includes an interactive Python interpreter for creating, modifying, and visualizing variables derived from input model data. This lets researchers work with derived quantities as part of their visualization workflow rather than limiting exploration to variables already present in the original data.

Its VAPOR Data Collection (VDC) model is designed to provide progressive access to data fidelity, with the stated goal of making terascale datasets visualizable on commodity hardware. That is a documented design capability, not a guarantee of performance on a particular computer or dataset. Results still depend on the data, workflow, and available system resources. The project is described as a domain-specific visualization and analysis package, and its code repository uses the BSD-3-Clause license. The project repository provides code and related project information.
Operating systems, installation, and version
The official download page lists builds for Windows, macOS with Apple Silicon, macOS with Intel x86, and Linux. NCAR says VAPOR runs on systems with modern 3D graphics cards, but the reviewed installation information does not specify minimum GPU, memory, or driver requirements. Check the current official VAPOR documentation and download information for requirements that apply to your platform rather than assuming a particular component is necessary.

The documentation page displays VAPOR version 3.10.1, dated May 19, 2025. It points users to GitHub for weekly builds, source, and previous versions; this date identifies the version displayed there and does not establish that it remains the newest release.
Mind the version of an integration
VAPOR itself and software that connects to it can have different compatibility limits. An older page in the Metview documentation says that interface supports VAPOR 2.2.2 and later but does not support VAPOR 3. That statement applies to the interface described on that older page; it should not be treated as a general limitation of VAPOR or assumed to describe newer Metview documentation. Check the documentation for the specific integration version you plan to use. ECMWF’s VAPOR tutorial covers its documented workflow.

Is VAPOR a fit for your work?
- Likely useful: You work with ocean, atmosphere, or solar model data and need interactive 3D exploration, time-varying visualization, derived variables, or visual outputs such as animations and still frames.
- Check before starting: Confirm that your particular dataset is supported, determine whether it needs conversion, and verify that your operating system and any integration are compatible with the VAPOR version you intend to use.
- Not established by the documentation: A specific minimum hardware configuration or guaranteed performance for a given dataset. The project’s terascale-data design goal should not be read as a benchmark result for your machine.
Researchers who benefit from VAPOR are asked by the project to cite Li, Jaroszynski, Pearse, Orf, and Clyne, “VAPOR: A Visualization Package Tailored to Analyze Simulation Data in Earth System Science,” Atmosphere, volume 10, issue 9, article 488 (2019). The paper is available through its DOI.
