Valkey is an open-source, BSD-licensed, in-memory key-value datastore maintained under the Linux Foundation. Applications connect to Valkey server processes over a network, using client libraries and the Redis Serialization Protocol (RESP). The same server can support a cache, message-oriented workload, session store, or primary database, provided its persistence, replication, and failure-recovery settings match the workload.

Valkey is closely compatible with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier, including documented protocol, configuration, client, module, and RDB/AOF compatibility. That compatibility has a hard boundary: Redis Community Edition 7.4 and later produce data files that the Valkey migration guide says are not compatible. Therefore, a Redis-to-Valkey plan must identify the exact Redis edition and version before anyone copies a persistence file or changes a production endpoint.

What Valkey is

Valkey is server software for storing and operating on key-value data in memory. A Valkey deployment consists of one or more server processes; applications reach those processes through a network connection rather than by installing a physical appliance. Client libraries send commands and receive responses over RESP, while administrators choose how the server persists data, replicates it, and fails over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project is open source under the BSD license and is backed by the Linux Foundation. Its project history says contributors from Alibaba, Amazon, Ericsson, Google, Huawei, and Tencent launched Valkey as a Linux Foundation project after Redis changed its licensing. The origin matters operationally because Valkey is developed as an independent project, even though it deliberately preserves substantial compatibility with earlier open-source Redis releases.

Three jobs in one server technology

  • Cache: Keep frequently requested values in memory so an application can avoid repeatedly reading a slower system of record. Persistence can be disabled when losing the cached copy is acceptable.
  • Message or event workload: Use queue-like data structures, Pub/Sub, transactions, and scripting to coordinate work between producers and consumers. Queue durability and delivery requirements still need workload-specific design.
  • Primary database: Keep application data in Valkey while using snapshots or an append-only log for recovery and asynchronous replicas for availability. This choice requires a deliberate durability and backup plan; the feature list alone does not prove that a workload meets a particular recovery-point or performance target.

These roles are architectural patterns, not guarantees. Whether Valkey is suitable depends on data-loss tolerance, latency, data volume, failover behavior, access controls, and the commands and modules used by the application.

How Valkey’s architecture works

In-memory data and network commands

Valkey keeps its active dataset in memory, which is the basis for fast command processing. Applications use a Valkey-compatible client library or speak RESP directly. The protocol documentation covers RESP2 and RESP3 for client-server communication. Valkey Cluster uses a different binary protocol for communication between cluster nodes, so client protocol compatibility should not be confused with the internal protocol used by a cluster.

A client sends a command, Valkey evaluates it against the in-memory dataset, and the server returns a protocol response. Existing Redis client libraries can connect to Valkey through RESP when their commands, configuration assumptions, and optional modules are supported. A successful TCP connection is only the first compatibility check; application behavior must still be tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional persistence

Valkey can be run as a non-persistent, networked cache, or it can write data to disk for restart and recovery. The project documents two principal persistence approaches:

  • Periodic snapshots: Valkey writes a representation of the dataset to an on-disk snapshot. A snapshot gives a recoverable point in time, but changes made after that point are not present in the file.
  • Append-only logging: Valkey appends write commands to a disk-based log. This records operations rather than only periodic whole-dataset images, with durability determined by the configured write and flush behavior.

The two approaches can be selected according to recovery objectives, and persistence can be disabled for a cache whose source data can be rebuilt. A persistence setting should be treated as part of the application’s data model: decide how much recent data may be lost, how long a restart may take, and how backups will be tested before choosing a mode.

Asynchronous replication and recovery from a split

Valkey supports asynchronous replication. A replica receives updates without forcing the primary to wait for a synchronous acknowledgment on every write, which can keep normal operations responsive but means a failure can leave the newest writes absent from a replica. The project also documents non-blocking synchronization and partial resynchronization after a network split, allowing a replica to catch up without always transferring the complete dataset again.

Automatic failover is among the capabilities listed by the official introduction. In a real deployment, failover behavior depends on the topology, monitoring, quorum or coordinator design, client retry behavior, and the amount of data a replica has received. Test the exact deployment rather than treating “automatic failover” as a universal recovery-time promise.

Other built-in capabilities

The project introduction lists transactions, Pub/Sub, Lua scripting, keys with time-to-live, LRU key eviction, and automatic failover. These features explain why Valkey appears in cache, session, messaging, and database architectures:

Capability What it enables Question to answer before production use
Transactions Group commands into an application-defined unit of work. What consistency behavior does the application require when another client changes related keys?
Pub/Sub Publish messages to currently subscribed consumers. Can a consumer miss a message while disconnected, or is durable queueing required?
Lua scripting Run server-side logic using the Redis-compatible redis namespace. Do scripts use only supported commands and execution patterns?
Time-to-live keys Expire sessions, cache entries, locks, or temporary state automatically. What should happen when an item expires before a replacement is written?
LRU eviction Remove less-recently-used keys when memory pressure reaches the configured policy. Can the application tolerate eviction, or must every value be durable?
Failover Promote or route to another server when a failure is detected. How will clients discover the new endpoint, and what writes might be missing?

Where Valkey fits: cache, queue, or primary database

Using Valkey as a cache

A cache deployment normally treats another system as authoritative. Valkey stores derived or frequently read values, with expiration and eviction limiting memory use. Disabling persistence can be reasonable when a restart merely causes cache misses and the application can regenerate values. If recomputation is expensive or origin traffic is sensitive, snapshots or append-only logging may still be useful, but they add disk, recovery, and operational work.

Define cache keys, expiration times, eviction behavior, and the response to a miss. Also decide whether a replica is needed for read scaling or availability. Replication does not turn an evictable cache into a durable database: a replica can be behind, and failover can expose the same recent-write gap that applies to asynchronous replication generally.

Using Valkey for messages

Valkey’s Pub/Sub and other command features can support messaging patterns, while transactions and Lua scripts can coordinate updates to related keys. Pub/Sub is not automatically a durable queue: a subscriber that is offline may not receive a publication. If every message must survive a consumer outage, select a data structure and persistence design that records pending work, then define acknowledgement, retry, and duplicate-processing behavior in the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure producer rate, consumer rate, message size, backlog growth, and restart recovery under realistic load. The official feature list does not establish a throughput or latency number for your workload.

Using Valkey as a primary database

Valkey can be the primary store when the application’s data model and recovery requirements fit an in-memory key-value system. Select a persistence policy, schedule and test backups, provision enough memory for the dataset and overhead, and operate replicas or another recovery path. Decide how a write is acknowledged, what happens when a primary fails before replication catches up, and how you will restore a complete dataset.

A primary-database design should document recovery-point and recovery-time objectives, acceptable data loss, failover testing, and capacity growth. Do not infer those guarantees from the fact that Valkey supports snapshots, an append-only log, and asynchronous replication.

Is Valkey compatible with Redis?

The precise answer is: Valkey documents broad compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier, but compatibility is not universal across every Redis edition, release, module, client, or persistence file. Separate the question into protocol and API behavior, configuration, modules and scripts, and on-disk data formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented compatibility boundary

Redis source Protocol, configuration, and application behavior RDB/AOF data files Migration implication
Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier open-source versions The Valkey migration guide describes compatible protocol and configuration behavior. Existing Redis client libraries can connect through RESP; Redis-style configuration files are accepted; Redis OSS modules using the RedisModule_ API work; and Lua scripts using the redis namespace continue to work. The guide describes compatible RDB and AOF formats for these versions. Direct file-based migration may be possible, subject to testing, topology, module, and workload checks.
Redis Community Edition 7.4 and later A similar command or client surface does not establish full compatibility. The Valkey guide says these versions produce data files that are not compatible with Valkey. Do not copy those persistence files into Valkey. Use a migration path that exchanges supported commands or data rather than assuming file compatibility.

The source label matters as much as the version number. “Redis 7.2” and “Redis Community Edition 7.4” are not interchangeable migration descriptions. Record the exact edition, patch version, persistence mode, modules, configuration, and deployment topology before selecting a method.

Protocol compatibility is not file compatibility

A client may connect successfully because both systems speak RESP, while an RDB or AOF file still cannot be loaded by the target. Likewise, a Redis-compatible configuration file or Lua script does not prove that a module’s binary, command behavior, or persistence format is supported. Treat these as separate gates:

  1. Can the client establish a connection and authenticate using the target’s supported settings?
  2. Do the commands, responses, transactions, expirations, scripts, and error behaviors used by the application match?
  3. Do every required module and its persisted data work on the target?
  4. Is the source persistence format explicitly supported for the exact Redis edition and version?
  5. Can the chosen migration method meet the required downtime and data-loss limits?

What the Valkey 8.0 statement does and does not mean

The Valkey 8.0 release announcement, authored by Kyle Davis and dated September 16, 2024, states: “Valkey 8.0.0 makes no backwards incompatible changes to the existing command syntax or their responses.” This is a release-specific statement about Valkey 8.0.0. It is useful evidence when evaluating command-level compatibility, but it is not a blanket promise for every future Valkey release, every module, or every integration.

How to plan a Redis-to-Valkey migration

Migration is a change to a stateful production system, not merely a package replacement. Use the following sequence and stop if any compatibility gate fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory the source. Record the exact Redis edition and version, topology, persistence mode, dataset size, write rate, modules, Lua scripts, client libraries, configuration files, TLS or authentication settings, replicas, and failover tooling.
  2. Classify compatibility. If the source is Redis OSS 7.2 or earlier, compare protocol, configuration, modules, scripts, and RDB/AOF requirements. If it is Redis Community Edition 7.4 or later, assume its data files cannot be loaded by Valkey and plan a command-level or key-level transfer instead.
  3. Build a test target. Install the intended Valkey version using a source build, container, or operating-system package. Load a representative copy or a non-production subset and run the application’s real commands, scripts, transactions, expiration rules, and module operations.
  4. Measure recovery and behavior. Restart the target, restore its chosen persistence format, exercise replica synchronization, and trigger the failover procedure in a test environment. Record load time, missing writes, client reconnect behavior, and any command or module differences.
  5. Choose a migration method. Select a recent snapshot, replication bridging, or migration of specific keys according to downtime, write-loss tolerance, dataset size, and source compatibility.
  6. Prepare cutover controls. Define the maintenance window, DNS or endpoint change, client retry behavior, rollback endpoint, backups, monitoring, and an explicit check for stale or missing writes.
  7. Cut over and verify. Move clients only after the target has the intended data, then verify reads, writes, expirations, scripts, subscriptions, persistence, replication health, and application-level transactions.

Method 1: copy a recent on-disk snapshot

Snapshot migration is conceptually simple when the source edition and file format are supported. Copy a recent snapshot to the Valkey host, start Valkey with that file, wait for it to load, and then point clients at the new endpoint. The migration guide warns that Valkey must load the data before serving it, so this method entails downtime while the dataset is loaded.

Write ordering is the critical risk. Under heavy writes, changes made after the copied snapshot can be absent. The guide warns of potential data loss if connections are not disconnected before migration. Freeze or drain writers according to the application’s cutover design, take the final supported snapshot, record the cutover point, and verify the target before reopening traffic.

Method 2: establish replication between Redis and Valkey

The migration guide documents establishing replication between Redis and Valkey. This can reduce the period in which the target is catching up, but it does not remove the need to verify source and target compatibility, monitor lag, and define what happens to writes during the final promotion.

Before promotion, confirm that the target has received the required data, stop or redirect writes in a controlled way, allow replication to settle, and switch clients. Retain the source long enough to support rollback, while preventing split-brain writes to both systems.

Method 3: migrate selected keys

Key-by-key migration is useful when only part of the dataset needs to move or when direct file loading is unavailable. Select keys, transfer their values and expiration information through supported commands, and validate types, scripts, modules, and relationships between keys. This method can take longer and requires an application-aware inventory, but it avoids assuming that an unsupported persistence file can be opened by Valkey.

Installing and deploying Valkey

Supported installation paths

The official installation documentation covers source releases, containers, and operating-system packages. Choose the path that fits your patching, image-signing, build, and rollback process:

Path Best fit Operational consideration
Source build Teams that need control over compilation, packaging, or a custom build pipeline. You own compiler, dependency, patch, artifact, and upgrade management.
Container Standardized environments and orchestration platforms. Persist data outside the disposable container layer and define volume, backup, networking, and upgrade procedures.
Operating-system package Hosts managed through an existing package and service lifecycle. Confirm repository freshness, supported versions, service defaults, and upgrade behavior.

Linux and macOS are the operating systems on which Valkey is developed and tested most, and the project recommends Linux for deployment. Windows is not officially supported. Windows users may use the Windows Subsystem for Linux for development, but that is not the same as official Windows production support.

Self-hosted or managed?

Self-hosting gives the team direct control over topology, persistence, upgrades, observability, and network placement, but the team also owns capacity planning, patching, backups, failover tests, and incident response. A managed service can reduce that operational burden, but its supported Valkey versions, geography, failover model, backup controls, security features, scaling limits, observability, and total cost must be checked in the provider’s current documentation.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every Redis product is interchangeable

Redis-derived names do not establish a common persistence format. Confirm the exact edition and version. In particular, do not treat Redis Community Edition 7.4-and-later RDB or AOF files as loadable by Valkey when the migration guide says they are incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing only whether a client connects

A successful RESP connection checks only one layer. Execute the application’s command paths, scripts, transactions, expiration rules, Pub/Sub behavior, module calls, and error handling. Compare responses and side effects, not just connection status.

Ignoring modules and scripts

Redis OSS modules using the RedisModule_ API and Lua scripts using the redis namespace are documented as compatible in the Redis OSS 7.2-and-earlier scope. Verify every module version and every script used by the application; an unsupported binary or command can block an otherwise successful migration.

Copying a snapshot while writes continue

A copied snapshot represents an earlier point in time. Heavy writes can create a gap between the snapshot and the cutover. Follow a controlled freeze, replication, or key-transfer procedure and explicitly verify the final write set.

Confusing asynchronous replication with zero data loss

Asynchronous replicas can lag. Define acceptable write loss, monitor replication health, and test the failure path before relying on automatic failover.

Treating a cache configuration as a database backup

If persistence is disabled and values exist nowhere else, a restart or failure can remove the dataset. Decide whether Valkey is a disposable cache or an authoritative store, then configure persistence and backups accordingly.

A practical decision framework

Valkey is a strong candidate when you need an open-source, in-memory key-value server and your application benefits from Redis-compatible clients, commands, expiration, scripting, Pub/Sub, transactions, replication, or failover. The decision becomes more involved when the source system is a newer Redis Community Edition, when modules are central to the application, or when persistence files are the planned migration mechanism.

  1. Start with the role: cache, messaging, session state, or primary data.
  2. Set the recovery target: acceptable data loss, restore time, failover time, and backup retention.
  3. Identify the exact source: edition, version, files, modules, scripts, clients, and topology.
  4. Select the deployment model: self-hosted or managed, based on operational ownership and required controls.
  5. Prove the path: test commands, responses, files, failover, restore, and cutover behavior on representative data.
  6. Document rollback: preserve the source, define endpoint reversal, and decide how writes are reconciled if the cutover is abandoned.

The central distinction is simple but essential: Valkey offers broad Redis OSS compatibility within a documented version boundary, not universal compatibility with every Redis product or persistence file. Check the source edition and version first, then validate the client/API surface and the data-transfer method separately.
