V-NAND is Samsung’s name for vertically stacked 3D NAND flash. Instead of placing memory cells across a single flat surface, manufacturers build many cell layers on top of one another and etch vertical channel holes through the stack. A “400-layer NAND” description refers to the active wordline or cell layers in a NAND die or combined stack—not 400 chips inside an SSD.
More layers mainly increase storage density and reduce potential cost per bit. They do not automatically make a finished SSD faster. Controller design, NAND interface speed, parallelism, cache behavior, thermals, endurance and the host PCIe/NVMe connection usually matter more to the drive’s real-world performance.
What V-NAND means
V-NAND is a proprietary name used by Samsung for its 3D NAND flash architecture. “V” refers to the vertical arrangement of memory cells. Competing manufacturers use terms such as 3D NAND, stacked NAND or other product names for the same broad approach: cells are built in a vertical stack rather than being spread only side by side on a planar surface.
Planar NAND became increasingly difficult to scale because shrinking cells laterally increased electrical interference and reduced the room available for reliable charge storage. 3D NAND changes the scaling direction. Manufacturers can keep a larger cell footprint while adding more layers above it. Samsung says its channel-hole approach enabled more than 100 layers and helped address planar scaling limits and cell-to-cell interference.

The need for higher density is substantial. Samsung has cited a projection of 175 zettabytes of global data in 2025. That figure is a forecast, not a measurement of SSD shipments, but it explains why flash manufacturers continue to pursue taller stacks and higher bit density.
How a 3D NAND cell stores data
Charge Trap Flash instead of a floating gate
V-NAND uses Charge Trap Flash (CTF). In a CTF cell, electrical charge is held in a non-conductive silicon-nitride layer. The trapped charge changes the cell’s electrical behavior, allowing the controller to distinguish programmed states from erased or differently programmed states.
Samsung presents CTF as reducing charge leakage and cell-to-cell interference compared with approaches that become increasingly difficult to control as cells are packed more tightly. CTF does not remove every reliability problem: taller stacks still require careful voltage management, error correction and interference-avoidance techniques.
The vertical channel
Rather than making each layer a separate horizontal chip, the manufacturer deposits alternating conductive and insulating films. It then drills a very deep, narrow cylindrical hole through the films. The channel formed inside that hole passes along the memory cells, while the charge-trap structure is formed around the channel walls.
Each conductive layer acts as a wordline controlling cells at a particular height. The insulating films separate adjacent wordlines. A controller addresses cells by selecting the appropriate wordline and bitline, then applies carefully controlled voltages to read or program the cell.

How manufacturers build a very tall stack
- Deposit the mold. Alternating conductive and insulating films are built into a multilayer mold. The exact materials and sequence vary by manufacturer and generation.
- Etch channel holes. High-aspect-ratio cylindrical holes are drilled vertically through the mold. Keeping these holes straight and uniform becomes harder as the stack gets taller.
- Form the channel and CTF layers. The vertical channel and charge-trapping cell structure are created along the hole walls so that many cells share one continuous vertical path.
- Define wordlines and connections. The layers are patterned and connected to peripheral circuits that select, program and read the cells.
- Combine stacks when necessary. If one etch cannot economically or reliably reach the desired height, manufacturers can join multiple separately built stacks.
- Test and package the dies. Completed NAND dies are tested, sorted and packaged for use with a controller in an SSD, memory card or embedded storage device.
Samsung’s sixth-generation description reported a 136-layer mold that was vertically pierced. It also explained that mounting three current stacks could produce more than 300 layers. Later generations moved toward double-stack structures and simultaneous drilling of the highest cell-layer counts claimed at the time.
What “400-layer NAND” actually describes
A 400-layer label describes the number of active memory-cell or wordline layers in a NAND die or in a combined multi-stack structure. It does not mean a finished SSD contains 400 NAND packages, 400 chips or 400 independent storage devices.
Recommended Free Tools
The number can also require careful interpretation. A manufacturer may count active cell layers, while another specification may emphasize a die’s stack arrangement or use a different terminology for peripheral layers. When comparing products, check the manufacturer’s definition rather than assuming every “layer” number is measured identically.
The cited official announcements confirm Samsung’s ninth-generation, double-stack V-NAND production in 2024, but they do not confirm a specific retail SSD advertised as a 400-layer product. Until a dated product announcement or listing explicitly states that layer count, treat “400-layer SSD” as a scaling target or architecture class, not as proof that a particular drive is shipping.
How a tall NAND stack becomes an SSD
The NAND die is only the storage medium. A usable SSD combines it with several other systems:

- Controller: coordinates reads, writes, error correction, bad-block management, wear leveling and the host protocol.
- Firmware: translates logical block addresses into physical NAND locations and manages garbage collection, caching and background maintenance.
- DRAM or host memory buffer: stores mapping data or provides a smaller substitute when the design does not include dedicated DRAM.
- Power regulation: supplies the precise voltages needed by the controller and NAND during reads, programming and erasing.
- Thermal hardware: spreads or removes heat so the drive can sustain workloads without excessive throttling.
- Host interface: commonly PCIe with NVMe in modern PCs, although other interfaces and form factors exist.
During a write, the host sends data through the interface to the controller. The controller may place the data in a cache, apply error-correction coding and distribute it across multiple NAND channels and dies. NAND pages are programmed at selected wordlines, while larger erase operations occur at the block level. During a read, the controller retrieves charge states, checks and corrects errors, then returns the requested data to the host. The host sees a logical drive; it does not directly address individual vertical cells.
Why manufacturers keep adding layers
Higher bit density
More active layers let a die store more bits without increasing its footprint proportionally. Samsung reported about 50% higher bit density for ninth-generation V-NAND than for its eighth-generation V-NAND. Higher density can increase the number of bits produced per wafer and lower potential cost per bit, although the final retail price also depends on controller costs, packaging, supply, demand and the SSD brand’s positioning.
More capacity in common form factors
Denser dies allow larger-capacity drives in the same M.2 or 2.5-inch formats. They can also reduce the number of packages needed for a target capacity, leaving more room for parallel channels, thermal components or other board features.
Potential power improvements
Samsung’s 2024 ninth-generation announcement reported up to 10% lower power consumption than the previous generation. A separate Samsung Semiconductor discussion described a 33% I/O increase to 3.2 gigabits per second and a 10% power reduction from V8 to V9. These are generation-level claims, not guarantees for every SSD using that NAND; the controller, firmware, capacity and workload still affect the complete drive’s power draw.
Why 400 layers are difficult
Etching and manufacturing tolerances
As the channel becomes deeper, etching must maintain diameter, alignment and electrical uniformity from the top of the stack to the bottom. Small variations can change how cells program or read. Manufacturers therefore use more advanced etching, process control and, when useful, multiple stacked sections rather than relying on one impossibly tall mold.

Voltage distribution
Taller stacks create greater variation in the voltages required at different positions. Samsung identifies voltage variability through taller stacks as a design challenge. The controller and NAND must deliver the right voltage to a selected wordline without disturbing neighboring cells.
Interference and error rates
Cells influence one another through electrical coupling. Higher density and more closely controlled voltage states make interference management more important. Error-correction technology, read thresholds, cell-interference avoidance and improved programming algorithms are all needed to preserve usable data.
Latency and endurance
Longer vertical paths and more complicated voltage management can affect read latency and programming behavior. NAND also wears as blocks are programmed and erased. A taller stack does not automatically increase or decrease endurance; endurance depends on the cell mode, process generation, controller algorithms, overprovisioning and the manufacturer’s rated total bytes written (TBW).

No—not by itself. Layer count primarily addresses density and manufacturing economics. Speed depends on the whole storage system.

- Interface generation: The host’s PCIe link and NVMe implementation set an upper boundary for transfers.
- Controller parallelism: Multiple NAND channels, dies and planes can be accessed concurrently.
- Cell mode: TLC stores three bits per cell; QLC stores four. QLC can increase density but may require more careful write management and can show different sustained-write behavior.
- Cache design: A dynamic or static write cache can make short transfers appear fast, while long writes may slow after the cache is filled.
- Thermals: Heat can trigger throttling, especially in compact M.2 drives with limited airflow.
- Workload: Sequential transfers, random reads, random writes, queue depth and mixed workloads produce different results.
For that reason, two SSDs using similarly tall NAND can have noticeably different benchmark results and user experiences.
How to compare a 400-layer-class SSD
Use layer count as one architectural clue, not as a buying decision on its own. Compare the following specifications together:
| Comparison axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Layer architecture | Single, double or multi-stack design; the manufacturer’s layer-count definition | Shows how density is achieved, but does not predict complete-drive speed alone. |
| Cell mode | TLC or QLC | Affects bits per cell, write behavior and typical endurance. |
| NAND interface | For example, Toggle 5.1 and its stated transfer rate | Sets the internal NAND-to-controller data path. |
| Host interface | PCIe generation, lane width and NVMe support | Determines how quickly the host can communicate with the drive. |
| Workload performance | Sequential and random results, including post-cache sustained writes | Reveals behavior beyond short burst tests. |
| Thermal behavior | Heatsink requirements, throttling data and operating environment | Indicates whether speed can be maintained during long transfers. |
| Endurance | TBW rating and warranty terms | Provides a basis for judging write durability. |
| Power draw | Idle, typical and maximum figures where published | Matters for laptops, compact systems and thermally constrained builds. |
| Price per terabyte | Current street price and usable capacity | Shows whether the density advantage benefits your budget. |
What to verify before buying
- Confirm the exact model number and capacity; NAND can change between capacities or production revisions.
- Look for an explicit manufacturer statement if a listing claims a particular layer count. Do not infer 400 layers from a generation name alone.
- Check whether the quoted sequential speed applies only to a short burst or remains available after the cache is exhausted.
- Match the drive to the host’s PCIe generation and physical form factor.
- Review TBW, warranty length and any stated workload or temperature conditions.
- Plan airflow for high-performance M.2 drives, especially in laptops or small-form-factor systems.
The practical takeaway
V-NAND is vertically stacked 3D NAND that uses deep channel-hole etching and charge-trap cells to keep increasing flash density after planar scaling became difficult. A 400-layer design represents an exceptionally tall die or combined stack, with the number referring to active cell layers rather than chips in a finished SSD.
More layers can improve bits per wafer, capacity and potential cost per bit. They also make etching, voltage control, interference management, latency and endurance engineering harder. Samsung’s documented ninth-generation double-stack production in 2024 demonstrates the direction of the technology, but the cited evidence does not establish a named 400-layer retail SSD. Evaluate any drive by its complete specification—cell mode, controller, interface, sustained performance, thermals, endurance, power and price—not by the layer count printed in a headline.
