UPI is India’s instant payment system for sending money between bank accounts and paying merchants. You use it through a compatible app: choose a recipient or scan a QR code, check the payment details, and authorize the bank transaction with your UPI PIN. UPI is the payment system; apps such as BHIM, PhonePe and Google Pay are ways to access it.
This guide explains what happens at each stage, what you need to get started, how UPI differs from the apps that use it, and what to check when a payment is declined, pending or intended for an overseas merchant.
What is UPI?
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI-regulated entity. It is built over IMPS infrastructure and connects supported bank accounts to compatible payment apps. That lets users initiate payments from an app without needing the recipient’s bank account number for every transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn practical terms, UPI is the shared payment layer. Your bank holds the account and processes the debit or credit; the app provides the interface; and NPCI’s UPI network carries the instruction between participating systems. The recipient can use a different participating bank or app, provided the chosen payment route is supported.

UPI supports person-to-person (P2P) transfers and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. Depending on the app, bank and feature, a user may also encounter collection requests, scheduled mandates, account transfers and QR-based payments. Availability and the screens used to complete a payment can differ by app and bank.
What you need before using UPI
You need a supported bank account and a UPI-enabled app. During setup, the app links the account and creates or displays the payment details that the service supports for you. NPCI’s product material says multiple bank accounts can be linked within one mobile application, although the banks and account types supported by each app can differ.
You also need access to the mobile number and device used by the bank and app for their verification and security steps. The exact registration screens are provider-specific, so follow the prompts in the legitimate app rather than relying on instructions from a caller, message or social-media post. If your bank or account is not listed, another app will not necessarily solve the problem; participation and feature support are determined by the relevant bank and provider.
How does a UPI payment work?
A typical payment has four essentials: an app linked to a bank account, the recipient’s payment details, the amount, and the payer’s authorization. UPI carries the payment instruction between the participating systems; the app presents the steps, while the payer’s bank account is debited when the transaction is authorized and processed.
- Link an account. Register in a UPI-enabled app and link a supported bank account. NPCI says a user can link multiple bank accounts in one mobile application, though an individual app’s support may vary. If several accounts are linked, pay attention to which one is selected for the payment.
- Choose a recipient or merchant. Depending on the payment flow, you may enter a UPI ID, UPI Number, account number and IFSC, or scan a merchant’s UPI QR code. A contact or saved payee may also appear in the app, but you should still verify the displayed name and details.
- Enter the amount. Some merchant QRs populate an amount and others leave it for you to enter. For a person-to-person transfer, type the intended amount and review any note or description shown by the app.
- Check the payee and account. Confirm that the name or merchant displayed by the app matches the person or business you intended to pay. Also check the selected bank account, amount and currency where the screen displays one. NPCI’s FAQ says a payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated, so this review is the main opportunity to catch a mistake.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN in the app to authorize the bank transaction. The PIN is a secret credential, not a confirmation code to be read aloud to another person. Never disclose it to someone claiming to be support or to someone who says it is needed to receive money.
- Wait for the status. The app displays a success, decline or pending result. Avoid immediately repeating the payment if the screen is unclear; first check the transaction history and the account activity so you do not create a duplicate.
- Keep the reference details. For a disputed payment, the transaction entry and its reference information help the app or bank locate the case. Use the provider’s in-app support or official contact channel rather than an unverified number.
The exact labels, aliases, screens, limits, charges and status messages are not uniform across every app or bank. Follow the instructions shown by your provider, and do not assume that one app’s flow applies to another.
What is a UPI PIN?
A UPI PIN is the 4–6 digit code set during first registration that authorizes a bank transaction. NPCI distinguishes it from a bank-issued MPIN. The two codes may be requested in different services, so do not treat an MPIN prompt as proof that a UPI payment is being authorized.
Treat the UPI PIN as confidential: enter it only into the legitimate payment flow in your app, and never tell it to another person. A bank or app representative should not need you to reveal it. If you believe someone has learned it, use the bank or app’s official process to secure the account and review recent transactions.

UPI, BHIM and other payment apps: what is the difference?
UPI is the underlying payment system. BHIM is an NPCI UPI app; PhonePe and Google Pay are other apps that connect users to UPI. These names are therefore not interchangeable: choosing an app is choosing an interface to use the payment system, not choosing a different name for UPI itself.
| Term | What it refers to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | The payment system developed by NPCI. | It connects participating bank accounts and payment apps for supported transfers and merchant payments. |
| BHIM | An NPCI UPI app. | Its app features and supported banks are app-specific. |
| Other UPI apps | Apps that provide access to UPI, including PhonePe and Google Pay. | Compare the features, supported banks, accessibility and customer support that matter to you. No single app can be named the overall winner for every user from the figures alone. |
NPCI’s August 2025 app statistics reported 9,152.54 million PhonePe transactions and 7,063.76 million Google Pay transactions. NPCI attributes app volume using payer-side PSP logic and excludes certain transaction types from third-party-app market-share reporting. Those figures describe reported volume for that month; they do not establish app quality, reliability, security or suitability for an individual user.
What can you use UPI for?
Sending money to another person
UPI supports P2P transfers. Depending on the app and payment route, you can select a recipient using supported payment details such as a UPI ID or UPI Number, or use account number and IFSC. Check the recipient shown before authorizing; the ability to use one identifier does not mean every app presents the same options.
If a recipient sends you a collection request, read the action on the confirmation screen carefully. A request to approve a debit is different from a notification that someone has sent you money. Do not enter your PIN merely because another person says doing so will release, accept or receive funds.
Paying a merchant
For a QR payment, open the app’s scan function, scan the merchant’s UPI QR code, enter the amount if it is not already populated, and verify the payee and amount before entering the PIN. Merchant QR payments are a common P2M use of UPI. The transaction result should appear in the app.
At a busy checkout, take a moment to compare the merchant name shown in the app with the business you are visiting. A QR code is a payment route, not independent proof that the displayed recipient is correct. If the amount or name does not match, cancel the flow and ask the merchant to confirm the intended details through an official channel.
Other supported flows
NPCI also describes collection requests, scheduled mandates and account transfers. A mandate can authorize a scheduled or recurring payment when the feature and bank support it; it should not be confused with a one-time scan-and-pay transaction. Whether a particular feature is available depends on the app, bank and transaction type. Read the action shown on the confirmation screen rather than assuming every UPI interaction is an outgoing payment or that all features work identically.

How large is UPI?
NPCI’s statistics page reported 24,508.96 million UPI transactions, worth ₹29,82,355.95 crore, in August 2026. NPCI notes that same-account debit/credit transactions have been excluded from these statistics since August 2018.

A separate NPCI ecosystem table reports 20,008.31 million transactions for August 2025: 7,303.15 million P2P and 12,705.16 million P2M. These figures are from a different month than the August 2026 total, so they should not be combined as though they describe the same period. They do show that merchant payments made up a larger share than P2P transfers in that August 2025 breakdown.
Monthly totals are snapshots of reported network activity, not a promise about the speed or availability of an individual transaction. A payment can still be delayed or declined because of a bank, app, account or transaction-specific issue even while the wider network is processing a very large number of payments.
Can you use UPI outside India?
UPI can be used at select overseas merchant locations that accept QR-based UPI payments, but international acceptance is not universal. NPCI says a user needs an eligible UPI-powered app and must activate the international service for the relevant bank account. Activation is an account and provider setting, not an automatic consequence of having a domestic UPI ID.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before confirming an overseas payment, inspect the amount in both foreign and Indian currency and review the conversion rate or fees presented by the provider. The amount you see can include a conversion calculation that differs from a rate you find elsewhere. If the app does not show the information you need, check the bank or app’s current terms before authorizing.
Some users with an international mobile number may be able to onboard if their bank account and chosen UPI app support it; bank terms apply. That is separate from paying at overseas merchants: support for an international mobile number does not mean a UPI QR code will be accepted everywhere abroad. Eligibility, activation, merchant acceptance and charges should be treated as separate questions.
Does UPI require NFC?
No. NFC is not a general requirement for UPI payments. It is used for the optional Tap & Pay flow, in which an NFC-capable phone or device reads a payee UPI ID or VPA from a tag or smart QR. Standard UPI transfers and ordinary QR scans do not become unavailable merely because a phone lacks NFC.
NPCI describes special handling for payments up to ₹500 through UPI Lite when enabled, with a PIN-based flow for other transactions. That is a feature-specific description rather than a universal UPI rule. Feature rules can change, so check the current app and bank guidance before relying on a particular threshold or assuming Tap & Pay is available on your device.

- Verify before the PIN. Check the recipient name, selected account, amount and the action being requested. Once initiated, NPCI says a payment cannot be stopped.
- Keep the PIN private. Do not share it by phone, message, screen share or in response to a supposed support request. Enter it only in the genuine app’s authorization screen.
- Distinguish incoming and outgoing actions. A collect or approval request may debit your account. Read the button and confirmation text instead of assuming that a request is money being sent to you.
- Use official help. For a problem, open the app’s transaction-status or support path, or contact the bank using details from its official site or app. Avoid numbers supplied by an unknown caller.
- Do not repeat an uncertain payment. Check history and account activity first. A second attempt can create a duplicate if the first transaction eventually completes.
- Review overseas details. For international QR payments, confirm both currencies and any displayed conversion information or fees.
What to do if a UPI payment goes wrong
If you have not entered the PIN
Pause and recheck the recipient, amount and action shown by the app. Do not proceed if the details are unfamiliar or the screen does not match what you intended to do. NPCI’s FAQ states that an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so checking before authorization matters.

If the payment is declined
NPCI says declined transactions receive a real-time reversal, with the amount transferred back to the payer account immediately. Check the transaction status in the app and the account activity rather than initiating a duplicate payment before you know what happened. Save the transaction reference if the status or balance does not look right.
If the payment is pending or the amount is not back
Use the app’s transaction-status and support process, then contact your bank if needed. Explain whether the app says pending, failed, reversed or successful, and provide the transaction details requested by the provider. The precise resolution timeline depends on the bank and case; an instant reversal for a declined transaction is not a guarantee that every pending or disputed payment will be resolved immediately.
If you paid the wrong recipient
Because an initiated payment cannot be stopped, contact the app and bank promptly through their official support routes and retain the transaction details. Do not assume that a recipient can be changed after authorization or that an informal promise to return the money resolves the issue.
Limits, fees and availability vary
UPI does not have one universal limit, charge schedule, feature set or dispute timeline established for every user and transaction. These details can depend on the bank, app, payment type and current rules. A person-to-person transfer, a merchant payment, an international QR transaction and a Tap & Pay flow may therefore present different conditions.
Check the current information in your bank’s and app’s official guidance before relying on a limit, expecting a feature to be available or estimating the cost of a payment. Do not infer a fee from another app’s screen, and do not assume that a transaction is free merely because the usual domestic flow does not display a charge. The provider’s current confirmation screen and terms are the appropriate place to verify the amount and any applicable cost.
A simple checklist before every payment
- Is this the correct app and the correct bank account?
- Does the displayed recipient or merchant match who you intend to pay?
- Is the amount correct, and for an overseas payment, are both currencies clear?
- Does the screen say you are paying, approving a collection request or setting a mandate?
- Are you entering the PIN only in the legitimate app?
- If the result is unclear, have you checked the transaction history before trying again?

What happens if I enter wrong UPI-PIN during a transaction?
The authorization will not be completed. Follow the app or bank’s official instructions for the next attempt or PIN-related help, and do not disclose the PIN to anyone claiming to provide support.
Can I stop a UPI payment after initiating it?
NPCI’s FAQ says no: once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped. Check the recipient, amount and action carefully before entering the PIN.
Is BHIM the same as UPI?
No. UPI is the payment system developed by NPCI. BHIM is an NPCI app that provides access to UPI, while PhonePe and Google Pay are other apps that use the system.
Does UPI work internationally?
It works at select overseas merchants that accept QR-based UPI payments when you have an eligible app and have activated international service for the relevant bank account. Acceptance and eligibility are not universal.
Do I need an NFC phone for UPI?
No. NFC is optional for the Tap & Pay flow. Ordinary UPI transfers and QR payments do not generally require NFC; feature-specific rules, including UPI Lite handling, should be checked with the provider.
What happens when a UPI payment is declined?
NPCI describes a real-time reversal, with the amount transferred back to the payer account immediately. For pending or disputed payments, use the app’s status and support process because resolution timing can depend on the bank and case.
Are UPI limits and fees the same everywhere?
No. Limits, charges, supported features and dispute timelines can vary by bank, app, payment type and current rules. Check the provider’s current official guidance and confirmation screen.

UPI is the common payment system behind many Indian banking apps, not the name of one app. Link a supported account, choose the recipient or merchant, verify every detail, and use your private UPI PIN only to authorize the transaction you intend. International QR payments, Tap & Pay, limits, fees and dispute handling are provider- and feature-specific, so confirm those details with your bank or app.
