True damage has two different meanings in League of Legends. In a match, true damage is a damage type that ordinarily bypasses armor, magic resistance, and most incoming damage reduction. True Damage is also Riot’s virtual hip-hop group and its associated skin theme. The group is a distinct music collaboration built around Akali, Ekko, Senna, Qiyana, and Yasuo. K/DA is a separate Riot music group; Akali is the link because she is associated with both.
The shared wording is a naming overlap, not evidence that the combat mechanic and the group are the same thing. The surrounding context tells you which meaning is intended: ability or combat discussion means the damage type, while songs, performers, Worlds 2019, or skins means the music project.
There are two meanings of “true damage”
True damage as a combat mechanic
League of Legends has three damage types, and true damage is one of them. Ordinary true damage is designed to reach a target without being reduced by that target’s armor or magic resistance. It also ordinarily ignores most incoming damage-reduction effects. That is why an ability description or combat explanation may call an amount “true damage” when the same amount would be reduced if it were physical or magic damage.

The technical reference used for this mechanic identifies exceptions involving defensive effects such as shields and invulnerability. Special internal damage used by the Nexus Obelisk is another exceptional case and should not be generalized to champion abilities. In other words, “bypasses armor and magic resistance” is a useful shorthand; “bypasses everything” is not.

True Damage as a proper name
True Damage, with both words treated as a name, is Riot’s virtual hip-hop group and the related champion skin theme. It is a music-and-cosmetics concept, not a new damage category and not an item that changes how combat damage is calculated. The group’s five champion identities are Akali, Ekko, Senna, Qiyana, and Yasuo.
When a page discusses the group, references to a song, an artist, a performance, a champion lineup, or a skin are clues that the proper name is intended. When it discusses resistances, abilities, damage numbers, or mitigation, it is using the lower-case gameplay term.
How true damage behaves in a match
What armor and magic resistance do not do
Armor is the defensive stat normally associated with physical damage, while magic resistance is the corresponding defense for magic damage. Ordinary true damage is not reduced by either stat. Raising a target’s armor or magic resistance therefore does not, by itself, reduce an incoming amount that the ability identifies as true damage.
This is the practical reason the type matters. Two attacks can show the same nominal damage in an ability description but produce different results when one is physical or magic and the other is true. The physical or magical amount is subject to its relevant resistance; the true-damage amount ordinarily is not.

What true damage does not automatically defeat
Several defensive situations still require care:
- Shields: a shield can affect how damage is absorbed, so do not assume that labeling damage as true damage makes a shield irrelevant.
- Invulnerability: a target that is invulnerable can still be protected from damage even when the incoming type is true damage.
- Other special rules: the game contains effects and structures with exceptional internal behavior. The Nexus Obelisk’s special internal-raw damage is specifically not a general rule for champion abilities.
Interaction details can change with patches. For a live match, check the current ability text and an up-to-date game reference rather than relying on an old clip, tooltip, or forum explanation.
A useful way to read an ability description
- Identify the damage type. Confirm that the text actually says true damage; do not infer the type from a champion’s theme or from a visual effect.
- Check the target’s current defenses. Armor and magic resistance matter for their respective damage types, but they are not the main variables for ordinary true damage.
- Look for protection effects. Shields, invulnerability, and ability-specific rules can change the result even when resistance does not.
- Check the current patch wording. If the interaction affects a build, combo, or objective attempt, use the latest description because patch changes can alter details.
This process prevents the most common mistake: treating the word “true” as a promise that every other combat rule has been disabled.
What True Damage, the music group, represents
The group and its members
Riot’s official GIANTS page describes True Damage as a virtual hip-hop group formed by K/DA’s rapper Akali. The champion identities are:

GIANTS was the debut single
GIANTS was presented as True Damage’s debut single. Riot’s page says the video appeared at Worlds 2019 and provides listening-service links. The Worlds connection explains why the project can appear in League coverage even when the article is discussing music rather than a game mechanic: it was introduced as a major esports-event performance and as a virtual act built from League champions.
The song’s artists and the champion lineup describe the same collaboration from two angles. The performers supply the voices and music, while Akali, Ekko, Senna, Qiyana, and Yasuo provide the League identities used in the group’s presentation.
The skins are cosmetics, not a combat rule
Riot’s Patch 9.22 notes announced True Damage skins for Ekko, Yasuo, Akali, Qiyana, and Senna, with release beginning on November 10, 2019. These skins are the in-game cosmetic expression of the music concept. They do not redefine true damage, add a separate damage type, or make a champion’s attacks ignore resistance merely because the skin carries the True Damage name.

That distinction matters when reading a patch note. A line about “True Damage skins” concerns appearance and theme. A line about an ability dealing “true damage” concerns combat calculation. The same five champion names can appear in both contexts without the two meanings becoming interchangeable.

How True Damage differs from K/DA

The relationship is best understood as a crossover of League’s fictional performers, not as a sequel in which one group replaces the other. Riot frames True Damage as a new hip-hop collaboration formed by K/DA’s rapper Akali. Akali can therefore belong to both fictional music projects at once.
What Akali’s connection does and does not mean
Akali’s presence in both names explains many search results that combine True Damage and K/DA. It does not mean every K/DA champion is a True Damage member, that the groups share the same discography, or that the True Damage skins are K/DA skins under a different label. The groups have separate identities, releases, and visual themes, with Akali serving as the explicit bridge between them.

Does true damage ignore armor?
Ordinary true damage is not reduced by armor. The same applies to magic resistance. However, that statement should not be expanded into “nothing can affect it.” Shields, invulnerability, and other special rules can still matter.

Which champions are in True Damage?
The group’s five champion members are Akali, Ekko, Senna, Qiyana, and Yasuo. The original skin release covered those same five champions.
Is Akali in both K/DA and True Damage?
Yes. Riot describes True Damage as a collaboration formed by K/DA’s rapper Akali, so Akali is the named connection between the two virtual groups. Her membership in both does not merge their names or their music catalogs.
Did a True Damage skin change an ability’s damage type?
No. The 2019 True Damage skins were cosmetic content. A skin’s title and visual theme do not turn physical or magical damage into true damage, and they do not alter the general rules for resistance or mitigation.
Why does “true damage” sometimes seem not to work?
First verify that the effect actually deals true damage. If it does, check whether the target has a shield, invulnerability, or another special protection rule. Also check the current patch’s ability description: interaction details are patch-sensitive, and exceptional systems such as the Nexus Obelisk should not be used as a model for champion abilities.

- Before the True Damage reveal: K/DA established Akali as one of Riot’s virtual music identities.
- Worlds 2019: Riot presented GIANTS as True Damage’s debut single and introduced the virtual hip-hop collaboration.
- November 10, 2019: Riot’s Patch 9.22 notes listed the original True Damage skins for Ekko, Yasuo, Akali, Qiyana, and Senna as releasing.
- Today: “true damage” still requires context. It can describe a combat calculation or the music-and-cosmetics property, while K/DA remains a distinct group linked through Akali.
How to interpret the phrase when you encounter it
Use the surrounding nouns as a quick disambiguation test. “True damage ability,” “true-damage build,” and “true damage versus armor” refer to combat. “True Damage song,” “True Damage skins,” “GIANTS,” and “True Damage members” refer to Riot’s virtual group. “K/DA” identifies the separate music project unless the sentence is specifically explaining Akali’s crossover role.
For mechanics, prioritize the current ability wording and a maintained game reference because balance patches can change interactions. For the music project, Riot’s official GIANTS page and Patch 9.22 notes establish the lineup, performers, song, event context, and original skin release. Keeping those two evidence trails separate avoids both major errors: claiming that true damage ignores every defensive effect, and treating a cosmetic music theme as a gameplay mechanic.
