The Xbox app on PC is a Windows application for finding, installing and launching Xbox games, including eligible PC titles in the Game Pass catalog. It also combines gaming chat, friends, remote play, rewards and a cross-store library in one interface. Xbox describes the app here.
Game Pass is a separate subscription. The app provides the interface, while your subscription determines which games you can access. You can download an included PC game so it runs on your computer, or stream a supported game through Xbox Cloud Gaming when your plan, device, region and connection qualify.
The Xbox app and Game Pass are different things
Installing the Xbox app does not give you a Game Pass subscription. The app is software; Game Pass is the paid service that supplies catalog access. You can open and use the app without subscribing, but subscription-only games remain unavailable until an account with the appropriate entitlement is signed in.
Game Pass access is tied to the Microsoft account you use in the app. The available catalog depends on your plan and can change over time, so a title shown in one region or plan may not be available to every subscriber. The Game Pass getting-started guide explains the basic relationship: sign in, browse the catalog and choose a game included with your subscription.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Xbox app: The Windows interface for discovery, downloads, launching games, social activity and library management.
- Game Pass: The subscription that grants access to an eligible, changing catalog.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: A streaming option for supported games and eligible plans, devices and regions.
Buying, downloading or opening the app therefore does not replace subscribing. Conversely, having Game Pass does not mean every listed title can be downloaded to a PC: some are available only through cloud play, some may be console-only, and availability varies by plan and location.
What you can do in the Xbox PC app
The app is designed to be a central gaming dashboard rather than only a download manager. Its principal functions include:
Find and install PC games
The Game Pass area lets you browse included titles and select a compatible PC game for installation. After the download finishes, you launch the local version from the app or your installed-games list. The game itself still determines the required processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage and Windows version; meeting the app requirement alone does not guarantee that a particular game will run well.

Launch games from one library
Xbox’s aggregated library can show installed games from supported PC storefronts alongside Xbox and Game Pass titles. Seeing a storefront game in this view does not make it a Game Pass benefit or transfer ownership to Xbox. It is a convenience layer that helps you locate games already installed through different services.
Chat and manage friends
The app supports chat and friend activity across PC, mobile and console. Xbox also lists account connections, so you can manage linked gaming identities and view activity without switching between several Xbox surfaces.
Play remotely from an Xbox console
Remote play is another listed feature. It lets a compatible Xbox console provide the game session while you play through the PC app. This is separate from both downloading a PC version and cloud gaming from Xbox’s servers: remote play uses your own console as the host.

Use rewards and account features
The app includes access to Xbox rewards features and account activity. The exact offers and eligibility can change, so treat rewards as an account feature rather than a guaranteed discount or catalog entitlement.

Use this workflow when you want the game to run locally. Local play requires enough storage and hardware for that specific title.
- Check Windows first. The Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher, as the app requirement, plus 150 MB of storage and a 720p display. Windows S mode may need to be left before you can play games.
- Install and open the Xbox app. Use the official Xbox PC app page to obtain the Windows app, then start it.
- Sign in with the subscribed account. Use the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription. If another account is active, the catalog and install permissions may not match your subscription.
- Open the Game Pass catalog. Browse the Game Pass tab or search for a title. Check that the game is marked as available for PC under your plan and in your region.
- Review the game’s requirements and storage. The app requirement is only a baseline. A demanding game may need a newer Windows build, more memory, a discrete graphics processor or additional free space.
- Select Install. Choose the available drive or folder when prompted and allow the download to complete. Downloading creates a local installation; it is not streaming.
- Launch from the app. Open the installed-games section and select Play. Updates, save synchronization and any additional sign-in prompts are handled as part of the game’s normal startup process.
When a title leaves the catalog or your subscription expires, access to that Game Pass copy can end even though its files remain on the drive. Rejoining the relevant plan or purchasing the game separately may restore access, subject to the title’s current availability.
Download versus cloud gaming
These are different ways to use an included game. A download runs a PC build on your hardware. Cloud gaming runs the game on Xbox’s servers and sends the video and audio to your device while your inputs travel back over the internet.
| Consideration | PC download | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On your computer | On Xbox servers |
| Installation | Requires a local download and storage | No local game installation for the streamed session |
| Hardware requirement | Your PC must meet that game’s requirements | A supported device and input method are required; the game is rendered remotely |
| Internet dependence | Needed for downloading, updates and online features; the game itself runs locally | A stable internet connection is essential throughout play |
| Catalog condition | The title must be an eligible PC game on your plan and in your region | The title must support cloud play and be available to your plan and region |
| Storage use | Consumes drive space for the game and updates | Avoids installing the game locally, though the app and browser still use ordinary device storage |
| Input | Use the controls supported by the PC version | Xbox says cloud gaming works with a variety of controllers and other input methods; a controller is not established as mandatory for every game |
When a download is the better choice
Choose local installation when your PC meets the game’s requirements, you have sufficient drive space, or your internet connection is unreliable. Local execution generally avoids the image-compression and latency variables inherent in streaming, but performance still depends on your hardware and the game’s settings.
When cloud gaming is the better choice
Cloud play is useful when you want to try a supported game without waiting for a large download or when your PC is not powerful enough to render it locally. It does not remove every requirement: you still need a compatible device, a suitable connection, an eligible plan, a supported title and service availability in your region.

Xbox’s December 19, 2025 cloud guide lists Windows 10 version 20H2 and later for cloud play. That is a cloud-play requirement, not a replacement for the Xbox app’s separately listed Windows 10/11 version 22H2 requirement. Check the current localized Xbox page before relying on any plan, country or device detail because those conditions can change.
In that guide, Xbox reported a 45% year-over-year increase in cloud-gaming hours in 2025. This is Xbox’s own usage figure, not an independent test of streaming quality or user satisfaction. The same guide said cloud gaming was available at publication with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate; plan names, availability and the supported game list are date- and region-sensitive.
System requirements and compatibility
The official app page gives these baseline specifications:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Item | Xbox PC app listing |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher |
| Storage for the app | 150 MB |
| Display | 720p |
| Windows S mode | You may need to leave S mode to play games |
These figures describe the app, not every game. A title can require substantially more storage, a newer graphics API, additional memory or faster hardware. Read the requirements shown for the individual game before starting a long download.
Cloud play has a separate compatibility layer. Xbox’s December 2025 guide refers to Windows 10 version 20H2 and later for cloud gaming, but also requires a supported device, reliable internet access, an eligible subscription and a game available for streaming in your region. The app requirement and cloud requirement should therefore be checked independently.
Library aggregation, remote play and Xbox Mode
Aggregated library
The library view can bring together installed games from supported PC storefronts, Xbox installations and Game Pass titles. This reduces the need to remember which launcher installed a game. It does not merge licenses: a game purchased from another storefront remains governed by that storefront’s account and terms, and its appearance in the list does not make it part of Game Pass.

Remote play
Remote play connects the PC app to an Xbox console so the console supplies the game session. It differs from cloud gaming because the hardware running the game is your console, not Xbox’s cloud infrastructure. It also differs from a PC download, which uses a Windows version installed on the computer.

Xbox Mode is a related Windows 11 interface, not another name for Game Pass and not a replacement for the Xbox PC app. Xbox says it is a controller-optimized, full-screen experience that began rolling out in select markets on April 30, 2026. It brings together the Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts.
The rollout is market-based, so its presence should not be assumed on every Windows 11 PC. A computer can meet the Xbox app’s listed requirement and still lack Xbox Mode if the feature has not reached that market or device.
A practical choice guide
Use the following sequence before deciding how to play a title:
- Confirm entitlement. Is the game included with your current Game Pass plan, available in your country and offered for PC or cloud play?
- Choose execution method. If you want the game to run on the PC, select a download. If you want to avoid installing it and the title supports streaming, consider cloud play.
- Check capability. For a download, compare your PC with the game’s requirements. For cloud play, verify the supported device, Windows version, network quality and input method.
- Check practical limits. Consider free storage, download time, data usage and whether your connection can sustain an interactive stream.
- Use the appropriate feature. Select Install for local play, start cloud play for a supported streamed title, or use remote play when your own Xbox console is the host.
Common problems and what they usually mean
The app opens but a game is unavailable
Check that you are signed into the account with the subscription, then verify the title’s plan, PC or cloud designation and regional availability. A catalog entry can change when a game leaves Game Pass or when a plan does not include that version.
The app installs but the game will not run
The app’s 22H2 baseline does not guarantee game compatibility. Recheck the title’s processor, graphics, memory, storage and Windows requirements. Windows S mode can also prevent normal game installation or play until you leave that mode.

There is no Install button
The title may be cloud-only for your device, console-only, unavailable on your plan or no longer included. Look for a cloud-play option and confirm the game’s current listing rather than assuming every Game Pass title has a PC download.
Cloud play is blurry or delayed
Streaming depends on the connection between your device and Xbox’s service. Verify that cloud gaming is supported in your region, that your plan is eligible and that your device and input method meet the current requirements. A local download avoids the need to stream the game’s video, provided your PC can run it.
A controller does not work
Xbox says cloud gaming supports a variety of controllers and other input methods, but support is not identical for every game or device. Confirm that the input method is compatible with the specific cloud title and device. Do not assume a controller is universally required or universally supported.

Do I need Game Pass to use the Xbox app on PC?
No. You can use the app for its interface and account features without Game Pass, but a subscription is required for subscription-only catalog access.
Can I download every Game Pass game to my PC?
No. Download eligibility depends on the title’s PC version, your plan and your region. Some games support cloud play instead of a local PC installation.
Can I play a Game Pass game without installing it?
Yes, when the title supports Xbox Cloud Gaming and your plan, device, region and connection qualify. Cloud play streams the game rather than placing its PC files on your drive.
Does the Xbox app include games from other PC stores?
Its aggregated library can display installed games from supported storefronts, but those games remain governed by their original store licenses and are not automatically included with Game Pass.
