The Thanos Copter is a real Marvel Comics gag: a normal-looking helicopter labeled “Thanos” that the Mad Titan uses in the reported story from Spidey Super Stories #39 (1979). The joke is the mismatch between a cosmic villain chasing the Infinity Stones and an unmistakably ordinary, name-branded aircraft.
The vehicle later became a deliberate pop-culture reference. It appears in Loki season one, episode five, and Brick Fanatics reported that LEGO’s announced LEGO Marvel The Marvel Skyline set 67006 includes the copter as a small street-scene Easter egg.
Thanos Copter appearances at a glance
| Appearance | What the copter does | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Spidey Super Stories #39 (reported 1979) | Thanos uses an ordinary helicopter while pursuing the Tesseract, then loses the cube and is arrested. | The plot and issue details come from a Brick Fanatics account of the comic. |
| LEGO Marvel The Marvel Skyline, set 67006 | It is a tiny detail within a broader Marvel city scene, not a separately sold aircraft. | Brick Fanatics reported the inclusion, a January 1, 2027 release date and regional launch prices on October 9, 2026; those product details were not independently confirmed by an official LEGO listing in the cited material. |
| Loki, season one, episode five | The copter sits in the Void as a visual joke and comics reference. | Director Kate Herron said the idea came from executive producer Kevin Wright and was approved by Marvel. |
What the Thanos Copter is
“Thanos Copter” is the informal name fans use for Thanos’s helicopter from Spidey Super Stories #39. It is not a futuristic spacecraft, an Infinity Stone-powered weapon or a major vehicle in Thanos’s mythology. It is an Earth-style helicopter with the word “Thanos” printed prominently on its side.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat ordinary design is the entire point. Thanos is normally presented as a near-unstoppable cosmic conqueror who manipulates the Infinity Stones. Seeing that character arrive in a conventional helicopter, complete with a giant label identifying its owner, turns his grandiose image into a deliberately silly children’s-comics gag.

The name also describes a reference rather than a distinct Marvel character or product line. When people ask about the Thanos Copter today, they may be talking about the original comic panel, the LEGO model hidden in a skyline display or the later Loki cameo. Those are connected appearances, not three competing versions of a vehicle with a detailed canon history.
The reported comic origin in Spidey Super Stories #39
A 1979 story aimed at younger readers
The commonly cited debut is Spidey Super Stories #39, reported as a 1979 issue aimed at younger readers. Brick Fanatics’s account describes Thanos using the helicopter while pursuing the Tesseract. Because the available plot description comes from that secondary report rather than a direct examination of the issue, it is best treated as a reported account of the story rather than as independently verified panel-by-panel evidence.
The chase and arrest
In the reported sequence, Thanos arrives in the copter during his pursuit of the Tesseract, encounters street-level heroes and drops the cube. The situation ends with Thanos being arrested. The resolution is intentionally deflating: a villain associated with universe-scale threats is defeated in a straightforward encounter after losing the object he wanted.
Why the helicopter is funny
Three details create the gag:
- Scale mismatch: Thanos’s usual stories involve cosmic stakes, while a helicopter is a familiar, practical vehicle.
- Visual labeling: The aircraft carries “Thanos” on its side, as if a notorious supervillain needed to mark his property.
- Humiliating outcome: The chase ends with the Tesseract dropped and Thanos arrested rather than triumphant.
The humor does not depend on the copter having special powers. Its conspicuous normality is what makes the image memorable.

How the copter fits Thanos’s broader Marvel history
The helicopter is a comedic side note, not the starting point of Thanos’s character. Marvel’s official Thanos comics guide identifies Iron Man (1968) #55 as his first appearance and highlights major later reading such as The Thanos Quest (1990) #1 and Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1. Those stories establish the cosmic scale usually associated with him; they do not independently document the helicopter’s debut.
LEGO’s official character description similarly presents Thanos as a Titan pursuing the Infinity Stones. That characterization explains why the helicopter joke works: readers recognize a figure associated with interstellar power, then see him using the least imposing transport imaginable.
It is therefore misleading to describe the Thanos Copter as a central element of Thanos’s origin or powers. It is a one-off comic scenario that became notable because later creators and fans found the contrast worth revisiting.
Why LEGO used the Thanos Copter as an Easter egg
The reported inclusion in set 67006

Those are reported launch details, not confirmed official-store information in the cited material. Release dates, regional pricing and included details can change before launch, so the figures should be understood as the October 9, 2026 report’s snapshot rather than a permanent price guarantee.
It is part of the skyline, not a standalone set
The copter is described as one small reference inside a larger Marvel skyline scene containing recognizable locations and vehicles. The report does not establish a separately packaged Thanos Copter product. A buyer interested in the Easter egg would be buying the complete skyline set, with the helicopter functioning as one hidden or semi-hidden detail in the display.
Why this reference suits a city display
A skyline model is built around recognizable visual landmarks. The Thanos Copter adds a different kind of recognition: readers who know the joke can spot an obscure comic image without the model needing to devote space to a full Thanos storyline. Its mundane shape also contrasts with more elaborate superhero vehicles, making it an effective background detail.
The inclusion does not mean LEGO is treating the copter as a newly important vehicle in Marvel continuity. It is better understood as a fan-service nod to an image that has already achieved meme-like status among comic readers.

The Loki season-one cameo
Where it appears
The Thanos Copter appears in the Void in season one, episode five of Loki. The Void is filled with discarded objects and realities, giving the production a natural setting for a strange comic-book artifact to appear without requiring an explanation of how it operates in the main timeline.
How the reference was approved
In a 2021 interview report, director Kate Herron said she did not initially know about the reference. She credited executive producer Kevin Wright with suggesting it: “For example, the Thanos Copter, Kevin Wright, my executive producer, that was him.” Herron said she responded, “That’s so funny. We have to, can we put that in there?” and that Marvel approved the idea.
That production account establishes the cameo as an intentional comics nod rather than an accidental background prop. The scene does not retell the Spidey Super Stories plot; it relies on viewers recognizing the incongruity of a bright, ordinary helicopter associated with Thanos.
Comic, LEGO and television: what changes between versions
Each appearance uses the same visual joke for a different purpose:

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- In the comic, the copter is an active part of a short chase story for younger readers. Thanos uses it, loses the Tesseract and is arrested.
- In LEGO’s skyline, it is a miniature environmental detail. Its value is the discovery moment when a builder recognizes the reference among the larger city elements.
- In Loki, it is a production-approved background gag in the Void, aimed at viewers familiar with Marvel’s stranger archival material.
The versions should not be compared as different vehicle specifications. None of the cited accounts establishes dimensions, engine type, special capabilities or a technical model designation. The continuity is the visual idea and the punch line, not a documented mechanical canon.
Is the Thanos Copter an official Marvel vehicle?
It is an official published Marvel reference in the sense that it appeared in a Marvel comic and was later used in an officially released television series. That does not make it a major recurring vehicle like a flagship spacecraft or headquarters. Its status is closer to a novelty image that creators can revisit when a scene benefits from an unexpected joke.
The comic’s reported publication history should also be kept separate from Thanos’s established first appearance. Marvel places his debut in Iron Man #55, while the helicopter story is associated with the later Spidey Super Stories #39. Saying “Thanos was in a helicopter” is accurate as a description of that reported story; saying “the helicopter defines Thanos” would overstate its role.

How to identify the reference in a LEGO display or screen scene
- Look for the label: The defining visual cue is “Thanos” printed on the side of an otherwise ordinary helicopter.
- Check the setting: In the LEGO report, it is embedded in the Marvel skyline rather than presented as a large hero vehicle. In Loki, it is among the Void’s discarded objects.
- Separate the joke from the plot: Recognition comes from the comic image. Neither later appearance requires the viewer to assume that the full 1979 chase happened again.
- Verify product claims by date: For set 67006, use a current official LEGO product listing to confirm the final release date, contents and regional price, because the cited announcement details were reported before launch.
What readers should remember
The Thanos Copter is memorable because it makes Thanos look gloriously ordinary. The reported 1979 comic story places him in a labeled helicopter during a Tesseract chase; the later Loki appearance turns that image into a deliberate television callback; and the announced LEGO Marvel skyline set 67006 reportedly hides the same idea in a city display.
Its importance is cultural rather than technological. There is no established propulsion system or separate product mythology to learn. The essential fact is the contrast: one of Marvel’s most cosmic villains, temporarily reduced to flying a plainly labeled helicopter.
