SMILE (the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) is a joint European Space Agency (ESA) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) spacecraft that watches how the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetic environment. Its distinctive method combines distant, global images of the magnetosphere and aurora with direct measurements of magnetic fields and ions along the spacecraft’s flight path. That combination lets scientists connect large-scale boundary changes with the local plasma conditions that cause them.
Why SMILE studies the solar wind and magnetosphere
The solar wind is a continuous stream of charged particles flowing outward from the Sun. Earth’s magnetosphere is the region dominated by our planet’s magnetic field. It deflects and channels much of the solar wind, but the interaction is dynamic rather than perfectly protective. Changes in the solar wind can compress the magnetosphere, drive currents, and trigger geomagnetic activity linked to auroras and space-weather effects.
On the Sun-facing side, the incoming flow meets the magnetosphere at a boundary called the magnetopause. Outside that boundary is the magnetosheath, where the solar wind has been slowed and disturbed after passing through a shock wave. Near Earth’s magnetic poles, funnel-shaped cusp regions provide pathways through which some solar-wind particles can enter the upper atmosphere. Energy deposited there contributes to auroral emissions.
Researchers have measured these regions with individual satellites and ground observatories for decades. SMILE is designed to observe the connected system at once: the motion of the magnetopause, conditions in the surrounding plasma, and the response of the northern aurora. That system-level view is the mission’s central scientific purpose.

How SMILE’s measurement strategy works
SMILE uses two complementary observation modes. Its imagers look across a broad area from a distant vantage point, while its in-situ instruments sample the environment immediately around the spacecraft.
| Observation mode | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Remote imaging | Soft X-rays from the solar-wind interaction around the magnetosphere and ultraviolet auroral emissions | Shows the location and changing shape of large-scale boundaries and auroral regions |
| In-situ sampling | Magnetic fields and ions encountered along the spacecraft’s path | Provides local plasma conditions that help explain the structures seen in images |
An image can reveal that a boundary has moved, but it does not by itself provide every local particle and field measurement needed to interpret that movement. Conversely, a point measurement can identify a magnetic or ion change without showing how widely that change extends. Combining both types of data allows scientists to relate solar-wind input to magnetopause motion and auroral response instead of studying each signal in isolation.
The four instruments on the spacecraft
Soft X-ray Imager (SXI)
SXI images soft X-rays produced when solar-wind particles interact with material around Earth’s magnetosphere. From SMILE’s distant position, those emissions can outline the Sun-facing magnetopause and help reveal the polar cusp. The instrument is therefore a remote sensor of boundary geometry rather than a detector that samples particles at one point.

Because the X-ray signal is faint and the spacecraft observes a bright, complex environment, instrument calibration and stray-light control are important. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ National Space Science Center (CAS/NSSC) reported that initial SXI data included stray-light effects; the joint team was addressing them through instrument tuning and software updates as of 30 September 2026.

Ultraviolet Imager (UVI)
UVI images ultraviolet emissions from the northern aurora. Auroras form when energetic particles travel into the upper atmosphere and excite atmospheric gases, which then emit light. By monitoring the aurora over extended intervals, UVI supplies an atmospheric view that can be compared with changes in the magnetosphere and solar-wind conditions.
UVI does not replace ground-based auroral cameras or other satellites. Its value is the coordinated timing and geometry: it observes the northern auroral oval from the same mission that is imaging the distant magnetopause and measuring local fields and ions.
Magnetometer (MAG)
MAG measures magnetic fields in situ as SMILE travels through the solar wind, magnetosheath, and near-Earth plasma regions. A field measurement can indicate when the spacecraft crosses a boundary or encounters a changing plasma structure. When synchronized with SXI and UVI observations, MAG helps connect a local field signature to a global feature.

LIA measures ions in the solar wind and magnetosheath in situ. Ion speed, direction, and distribution describe the particle flow that is pushing against and passing around the magnetosphere. These measurements provide the local solar-wind context needed to interpret X-ray boundary images and auroral changes.

Why the instruments are more useful together
The payload is intentionally complementary rather than four independent experiments. SXI supplies a global view of the magnetopause and cusp; UVI shows the northern auroral response; MAG records the local magnetic field; and LIA characterizes the local ion population. Researchers can align those observations in time to ask questions such as:
- Did a change in the solar-wind ion flow coincide with motion of the magnetopause?
- Did a magnetic-field change measured by MAG occur as the spacecraft crossed a structure visible in SXI data?
- How quickly did the northern aurora brighten or shift after the magnetosphere was disturbed?
This approach is especially useful for studying cause and effect. Remote images establish the scale and position of a feature, while in-situ data test what the plasma and magnetic field were doing at the spacecraft. Neither mode alone provides that complete context.
Orbit, launch, and viewing geometry
SMILE launched on 19 May 2026 at 05:52 CEST from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana aboard a Vega-C rocket. CAS/NSSC reported that it reached its science orbit on 20 June 2026.
| Orbit characteristic | Reported value | How it supports the mission |
|---|---|---|
| Perigee | 5,120 km | Brings the spacecraft close enough to sample near-Earth plasma regions |
| Apogee | 120,900 km | Provides a distant line of sight for imaging the Sun-facing magnetopause and cusp |
| ESA description of distant point | About 121,000 km above the North Pole | Places the spacecraft in a favorable northern-polar viewing geometry |
| Planned mission lifetime | 3 years | A mission plan, not a guarantee that operations will last exactly that long |
This highly elliptical, northern-polar orbit is the key to SMILE’s observing geometry. Near apogee, the spacecraft is far enough away to see a large portion of the Sun-facing magnetic boundary rather than only a local patch. ESA’s launch information said the orbit can support as much as 45 hours of continuous northern-aurora viewing at a time. During lower-altitude portions of the orbit, MAG and LIA can sample different near-Earth and solar-wind environments directly.

Who built and operates SMILE
SMILE is a formal ESA–CAS partnership with responsibilities divided between the two agencies. ESA provides the payload module, the launch vehicle, one of the science instruments, and a share of science operations. CAS provides the spacecraft platform and three instruments and is responsible for operating the spacecraft in orbit.
ESA’s mission overview describes a science team of more than 250 scientists. The collaboration combines European and Chinese spacecraft, instrument, flight-operations, and data-analysis expertise rather than treating the mission as a single-agency satellite.

What SMILE can—and cannot—tell us about space weather
What it can add
- Global measurements of where the Sun-facing magnetopause is located and how it moves.
- Observations of the polar cusp and its relationship to solar-wind conditions.
- Extended monitoring of northern-auroral emissions.
- Local magnetic-field and ion measurements to identify the plasma conditions associated with imaged structures.
- A common time sequence linking solar-wind input, magnetospheric boundaries, and auroral response.
What it does not do by itself
- It is not a consumer satellite or an instrument for personal storm warnings.
- Its observations do not guarantee a forecast of a particular geomagnetic storm before it occurs.
- One spacecraft cannot measure every location in the magnetosphere simultaneously.
- Early SXI images affected by stray light should not be treated as final, fully calibrated performance results.
SMILE’s contribution is improved physical understanding of the coupled Sun–Earth system. Forecasting agencies may use knowledge from missions such as SMILE alongside many other spacecraft and models, but the mission is fundamentally a research observatory.
Key terms in plain language
- Solar wind
- A continuous outflow of charged particles from the Sun.
- Magnetosphere
- Earth’s magnetic environment, shaped by the planet’s field and its interaction with the solar wind.
- Magnetopause
- The boundary on the Sun-facing side where the solar wind meets and is deflected by the magnetosphere.
- Magnetosheath
- The disturbed solar-wind region outside the magnetopause, between the bow shock and the magnetic boundary.
- Magnetic cusp
- A polar funnel region where solar-wind particles can gain access to the upper atmosphere.
- In situ
- Measured directly at the spacecraft’s location, as with MAG and LIA.
What makes SMILE distinctive
Many space missions specialize in either remote sensing or direct sampling. SMILE is designed around the scientific value of doing both in a coordinated orbit. Its distant apogee gives SXI and UVI a broad perspective, while the same spacecraft carries instruments that record local field and ion conditions. That arrangement can reduce ambiguity when researchers interpret a moving boundary or changing aurora.

The mission also links regions that are often studied separately: the solar wind outside Earth, the magnetopause and magnetosheath around the planet, and the aurora in the upper atmosphere. By observing those links over long intervals, SMILE can test how disturbances propagate through the system and improve physical models of space weather.
Bottom line
SMILE is a four-instrument ESA–CAS mission that studies the solar-wind–magnetosphere–ionosphere connection. Launched on 19 May 2026, it operates in a highly elliptical northern-polar orbit reaching about 121,000 km above Earth. Its defining capability is the combination of global soft-X-ray and ultraviolet imaging with in-situ magnetic-field and ion measurements. By 30 September 2026 it had begun science operations, while early SXI data were still being refined to address stray-light effects.
