Romu is a prototype RP2354A microcontroller board measuring 15.5 × 12 mm that plugs directly into a USB Type-A port. It packs 2 MB of embedded flash, an RGB LED, a capacitive touch button, 3.3 V regulation and USB DFU programming into a tiny board. Its main trade-off is practical: the board has no dedicated SWD or UART connector, so those debugging connections require a separate pogo-pin fixture.
What Romu is—and what is confirmed
The project creator describes Romu as a keychain-sized board for quick firmware work, USB experiments and small projects, rather than a general-purpose replacement for a Raspberry Pi Pico. Its defining feature is its size and direct USB-A connection, not a wide selection of exposed peripherals. The stated board features and dimensions come from the project announcement.
The creator reports machine-assembled production prototypes and successful initial validation. Those statements do not establish completed production qualification, final specifications, retail availability or price. The linked project posts are not proof that a campaign is live or that boards are in stock.

What is on the board
- Microcontroller: Raspberry Pi RP2354A with 2 MB embedded flash, according to the project creator.
- USB: native USB and USB DFU programming; Romu plugs directly into a USB-A port.
- Onboard interaction: an RGB LED and capacitive touch button.
- Power: an onboard 3.3 V regulator.
- Debugging: a separate pogo-pin fixture provides access to USB, SWD and UART. The main board omits dedicated SWD and UART connectors to preserve its small footprint.
The creator says the compact layout required close attention to component placement, routing, USB signal integrity, power distribution and manufacturability. These are design statements, not independent performance results. See the design discussion.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the RP2354A specification does—and does not—tell you
Raspberry Pi lists the RP2354A as a 7 × 7 mm QFN60 chip with 30 GPIO and stacked 2 MB flash. The RP2350 family has dual Arm Cortex-M33 or dual Hazard3 RISC-V processors running at up to 150 MHz, plus 520 KB of on-chip SRAM. These are chip or family specifications, not a description of Romu’s accessible board connections. The project information does not establish that all 30 GPIO are exposed on Romu.
The RP2350 family supports Raspberry Pi’s C/C++ SDK and MicroPython. For a specific Romu prototype, check its launch documentation for confirmed firmware and toolchain compatibility. Raspberry Pi says the RP2350 will remain in production until at least January 2045. See the RP2350 product page.

Is Romu suited to your project?
Where the tiny form factor helps
Romu’s direct USB-A plug and onboard LED and touch input are aimed at quick experiments that can be developed or interacted with over USB. Its small size may also appeal to someone who wants to keep a microcontroller close at hand. The board’s stated design intent is firmware prototyping and USB experiments, not extensive peripheral wiring.
Where the trade-off shows up
There is no dedicated board-level SWD or UART connector, so debugging with those interfaces means bringing the separate pogo-pin fixture. The project information also does not establish a conventional exposed pin header for connecting sensors and peripherals. That makes Romu less convenient for the usual breadboard workflow, though it does not prove that every form of external I/O is impossible.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Community discussion raises the practical question of what can be done without GPIO pins and whether carrying a separate jig undermines portability. Those are reasonable workflow questions, not evidence of a confirmed hardware defect. Before choosing Romu, consider how often your work needs direct peripheral wiring, serial access or SWD debugging.
How Romu compares with other compact RP2350 boards
The alternatives below document different priorities: Romu emphasizes a tiny direct USB-A plug, while the Waveshare boards provide more explicitly described external connections or adapter arrangements. Their published features should not be read as a hands-on comparison.

Availability and what to verify
The available project posts describe prototypes, not a confirmed retail product. The creator says the design is intended to become fully open source upon launch, but that intent does not confirm that the files are currently published. Check the project’s current status before assuming a live campaign, shipping date, final production configuration or price. No independent hands-on testing is established by the cited project information.
